Losi 1/8 ESC - bad experience ...

Today I received the Losi 8ight-e here in germany ... sadly the ESC stopped working BEFORE the first run outside...
I connected the 5s lipo and drove some seconds in the house - suddenly the car went to full throttle , hit my leg and awful smoke came out of the ESC ...

I think this ESC behaves like a MMM. --- I called Horizon Hobby customer support - they told me to return the damaged part.

Luckily I have a Kontronik Jazz 80 and a MGM 22418 at home so I will try the rest of the car this weekend...

jhautz 09.25.2008 03:08 PM

Nooooooo!!!! Say it isnt so.

I had my fingers crossed that this would be good. Hopefully this is not the regular experience.

BL_RV0 09.25.2008 03:35 PM

Ahhh.... That sucks..... I WAS going to get one for the hyper st... Not any more. :bad:

I think there is another problem with this ESC - it is rated for 160 A max...
but as you can see they use 3,5mm plugs which handle 80 A max. For a real racer this ESC is crap - I hate to say that.

jhautz 09.25.2008 05:14 PM

I can see possibly soldering some 10 or 12 ga wires into the 3.5mm sockets and then putting real bullet plugs on the end of the wires. Thats what I did on my Lehner motors that have 3.5mm sockets on the back of them also. Works great on the Lehners.

DOnt tell me its another esc than needs to moded to run well.

Can you measure the battery tray. How big is it on the inside dimensions? Just curious as to what size pack can fit into the tray.

jnev 09.25.2008 06:27 PM

Too bad about the ESC... hopefully that isn't the result most people will have with it. How securely is the battery tray mounted? How many screws are used to hold it down. Do you find it very convenient having the single screw to adjust gear mesh?

MTBikerTim 09.25.2008 06:31 PM

Anyone measure the rotor up on one of those motors yet? The other dimensions would be nice too . I want to see how close ther are to the neus.

cornolio 09.25.2008 06:57 PM

isnt it rated up to 4s only?

big greg 09.25.2008 08:33 PM

nope 5s, my buddy had one do the same thing to him, poof smoke, after one or two passes

BL_RV0 09.26.2008 02:56 PM

What a dud.

jhautz 09.26.2008 03:01 PM

Thats 2 for 2 now. Havent had anyone chime in with one that actually works. I think I will be cancelling my preorder on amain....

macr0w 09.26.2008 03:50 PM

I also have one on pre-order from A-Main.

I don't guess I'll cancel my order, but I hope they can get it straightened out.

Boy, I'm getting deja-vu all over again. :mdr:

I feel like I've said that before about some other controller.

I wonder how it will hold up with a 2600+ kv Neu?

Topas 09.26.2008 04:10 PM

My really old Kontronik Jazz 80 works great on the same setup ...

tc3_racer_001 09.26.2008 06:42 PM

this is hilarious. in the last month ive heard from 5 different people who had WORKING ESCS that they were going to order this one because it was from LOSI and it would be reliable.... way too early to say, but the fact that 2 from 2 have duds isnt the best sign.... anyway time WILL TELL... until then i couldnt be more happy with my MMM!!!

SpEEdyBL 09.27.2008 07:46 PM

There are probably people with this esc that don't report because its working. Just like the MMM. Where did I start a thread saying how my MMM is working?

DRIFT_BUGGY 09.28.2008 03:13 AM

Losi have enough problems with the 1/10 scale ESC let alone a 1/8 scale.

Topas 09.28.2008 07:39 AM

Losi will have much more problems with the 8ight-buggy .

My 8ight was delivered with a 16 tooth pinion but the manual at : http://www.losi.com/ProdInfo/Files/1...otorManual.pdf recommends max. 13 tooth at 4s ! I tried it only for a very short time at 16/45 but my Kontronik Jazz 80 shut down because of overheating. At the moment I use a Novak 11 tooth pinion (this was the only fitting mod1 pinion here at the moment) at 4s (30mph) and 5s (38mph) which is enough speed for our small race track.

The stock 16 tooth pinion would be 55mph at 5s and 44mph at 4s I don´t think the motor can´t handle so much power ....

Steve Krug 09.28.2008 10:51 AM

This ESC seems like a revamped Novak HV speedo.

Crap for 1/8th racing.

Thats strange, have you called Horizon yet?

big greg 09.28.2008 08:44 PM

44 mph? thats it? should be able to handle it no prob, i think im at 41-2 and i run sweet, but that also with mm and 2.0

DRIFT_BUGGY 09.29.2008 05:38 AM

They say in the instructions that the motor should not exceed 190F. That is a pretty high temp. Hoping to hear some feedback on the motor.

chip cross 09.29.2008 09:28 PM

Crap, I was goion to buy the 8E, but I guess that's on hold now.

Ordinarily I'd say that was true, but around here guys tend to share their experiences, good or bad, of new items like escs and motors etc. So, a couple people have had bad results- lets see how many more report their findings or what they've heard from other users...

Topas 09.30.2008 02:10 PM

I sent the ESC back to Horizonhobby.

DRIFT_BUGGY 09.30.2008 05:25 PM

Are they sending you out a new one or are they wanting to check over the esc first?

They want to check over the defective esc first ... this is very bad customer support compared with traxxas !

emaxxnitro 10.01.2008 05:46 PM

these cars dont like shiny escs! lol!

E-fanatic 10.01.2008 09:55 PM

I was going to get the losi 2100kv motor and esc but after reading this I put the money down on the v3 mmm and there new 2200kv motor(I saved $100 going that route too)
I just want a system that works(and one that I can afford right now)

I would have gone back to a mgm esc but The first 160 I bought died in 10 seconds and then I bought another one(I have bought 4 mgm escs from mike and all but the first 160 worked great). The second one I lost due to dropping the truck in alot of water(lipos and esc went up in flames) Well I sent the first esc back to mgm for a warrenty repair and well I guess it got lost b/c they said they never got it($250+ gone trying to get warranty and anoher $250 due to my stupidity(not counting the $200 in lipos due to my stupidity) I want to get something in the the usa so I can make sure it get there if I need warrenty and I know castle has great customer service.

Semi Pro 10.01.2008 11:29 PM

thats sad, i have had nothing but problems with losi stuff ever since the mini lst

i was really hopeing the 1/8 scale esc would be great

E-fanatic 10.02.2008 10:04 AM

I have 3 mini lsts and I cant get a diff or servo to hold up in them but on the other hand the best truck I hae ever had was a lst2.

Even better than your E-REVO?

E-fanatic 10.02.2008 07:30 PM

Well the lst is built better (more quality parts) Its built to take one heck of a but kicking. The only issue I had with it is the steering (gets sloppy fast) and the weight. The lst will handle rough terrain better too.
I like the e-revo b/c its alot lighter, easier to drive, cheaper, easier to get parts for, looks bad ass, has a really low center of gravity, seems to handle tighter turns and doesnt tip so easly. Also has a wheely bar that works(none for the lst were worth a crap and it needed it bad)

My lst needed an overhall. The diffs were starting to wear, the cvd were starting to wear, all the rod ends where wore out, Needed a new body, needed a new 5s lipo(My plane crashed and killed the one for the truck) and so on and so forth. Plus I wanted something new and the e-revo looked so dang good.

I would have liked to keep the lst but it would have cost alot of money and I am very happy with the e-revo (something new to figure out)

stum 10.02.2008 07:31 PM

I have raced serveral lst2's w/ my erevo and smoke them easily.. as long as you run the knuckles with the steel ring it's every bit as durable too.. if not more so.

E-fanatic 10.02.2008 07:36 PM

Yeah my e-revo is alot quicker and easier to drive. I have the exended wheel base on my e-revo so it doesnt wheely as bad either. The only thing is try to race a E-lst2 where it has the same kind of power(its a little harder). Pulling away from a nitro is easy
