A small afternoon project...

No the title is not misleading, I actually did this in an hour, so it is a small project for me!

Recently bought a few new chargers, so I decided to make a portable charging station for my buddies and I when we go rock crawling. Most of us use 1800-2100 3s lipos, or 4000 2s lipos. I had the case, it is for a jigsaw. Just cut out most of the dividers, and trimmed some high desity foam for the chargers. The power supply fits perfectly height wise, and I added some foam above the chargers on the inside of the lid to keep them in place during transport. The little space on the right side is for balancers and adapter harnesses, and on the right I have the cord for the power supply, and a long harness to use with a 12v battery in a car (has alligator clips on the end). Both chargers are wired together, but i can unplg one if I want to. All connections are 4mm bullets.

I will have to rebuild my charge station (some of you will remember that), as I now have 2 MRC 989, 2 ICE, and 2 other Hyperion 5i chargers.

Looks good.

jayjay283 09.30.2008 08:00 PM

Sweet Sir, Ill paypay you $40 if you can get that through airport security

JThiessen 09.30.2008 08:06 PM

I got two of those sitting downstairs for that exact same purpose. I tried like the dickens to get the dewalt logo off - DNA, MPK, heat....nothing took that paint off.

BrianG 09.30.2008 08:26 PM

Where does one get that foam? I've been wanting to do the same thing, but the foam I find is either too soft (hard to cut and doesn't hold shape) or really hard and doesn't do much for padding.

lincpimp 09.30.2008 08:32 PM

I procured mine from a box that had a chevy 4 door truck headliner in it, so the foam was free (headliner was $537 though). Thick foam is quite difficult to find. Fabric stores would be my first choice, maybe they can special order the foam...

THAT sir, is effin cool.
I have to do someting like that.. I usually take all my crap when we go camping. Between charger, power supply, 4 sets of batts, controller, Tool Box(with spare parts), car, etc.. It's a lof of shit to haul.

magman 09.30.2008 08:43 PM

Nice job there Linc!

JThiessen 09.30.2008 08:50 PM

I get mine from work, but I know there is a store by me called "The Foam Source".

A slightly bigger box than this would be great. Put some slots in there for the batts and it would be great...

A good tool box is handy. I need to set up a

This the sort of stuff you are after
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PELICAN-PICK-...dZp1638Q2em122

We call that pull apart foam. You just don't let kids or fiddling partners near it or you end up with an expensive pile of little bits of foam.

VintageMA 09.30.2008 10:07 PM

Very nice - I've got the same Pre-Peak power supply and it's got plenty of ooomph to drive two chargers at once.

The wondrous place for everything.....almost

http://www.mcmaster.com/

Just search foam and the rest is pretty self explanatory.

BTW, nice job linc!

jnev 09.30.2008 10:38 PM

Thats a very nice storage spot you made there linc. Nice job! Can you tell me or do you know if that power supply you have will give a Hyperion EOS0610i the full power of 360watts? Here is the charger if you need the specs of it. Thanks in advance!

Well, 20 amps at 14v is 280watts. Not sure if that is how you figure it out...

Sorry, meant that you are the coil thingy in the bottom of a can of guiness beer...

Still, I could have called you worse, but not much if we were on the traxxas forum...

DRIFT_BUGGY 09.30.2008 11:48 PM

Well done

That Guinness contraption is a great invention. It makes my Guinness all frothy just like draft and I get the cool cascading effect. BTW Guinness is my favorite beer.

They also have that contraption in Boddington's Pub Ale which I really like as well. Lighter than Guinness but still has a full flavor. I don't drink weak tasteless beer, only the good stuff for this boy.

Yeah, but if you can't feel/hold it, it's hard to know for sure it's the right stuff.

About the PS: 14v @ 20A is indeed 280w, but you have to figure in charger efficiency of around 80%, so you only have about 224w available to get to the batteries...

TDC57 10.01.2008 04:10 AM

Great Job James.. As always.. :intello:

They have descriptions of the firmness of the foam on there and comparisons to everyday items to assist. Of course you could also order some small sample pieces of a few to aid your choice. Should only cost a few bucks.

Hmm, comparisons to everyday items, huh. I wonder what those items are???

"This foam feels squishy, kinda like a big ole pair of......"

suicideneil 10.01.2008 02:30 PM

Cushions?

Arct1k 10.01.2008 02:54 PM

Have you used it yet - those 5i get warm when charging bigger packs - that foam will act as a pretty good insulator - Do you use the LBA10 data link?

I have not used it much, but I have enough wire length that I can lift them out to get better airflow... Mostly we will be charging 1800 and 2100 3s packs...

TDC57 10.06.2008 02:22 AM

Ok Linc,
Now that you've completed this bad boy :intello:, what's next on your list Sir..

When are we going to see some vid of one of your 38 builds

Well, I am trying to get both of my Bomb Proof maxx trucks finished. And I have another erevo to build, as soon as the chassis shows up. And I am working on a crawler, axail axle based, most likely with a modded pede tranny (cause I have everything) and a custom made chassis, based on a Gatekeeper GC-1. And about 10 other trucks to finish...

I will get around to doing some vids eventually...

TDC57 10.06.2008 02:45 AM

Looking forward to seeing the crawler..

Actually I can throw mine in my bag and bring in up with me if you want to get your ass kicked by a "So-cal surfer boy"

Yes I go there.. :lol::lol:

Have a great week Sir..

I'm up in LA wed-fri (lets get together and doo some drinking):drunk:

If you feel like hanging out in Slidell one evening, my buddy has a pretty cool rock course in his back yard, complete with a crawler bridge/ramp. Fun place to play. All I have right now is my tamiya crawler, but I can break it out, not a full comp crawler, but fun to watch.

Give me a call during the week and we can figure times out...

TDC57 10.06.2008 03:04 AM

Will do Sir..

thanks James..
