FLM SPV2 Crawler Build - Designer StampedeProject
 
Born out of a a want and need for a more universal style chassis, I developed and designed the SPV1 and SPV2 chassis. Currently the designs are licensed to FLM (Fast Lane Machine) and now available from RC-Monster.com

It all started when I heard of Losi's mini-crawler several months back. I though a mini-scale crawler would be cool, but how about a true 1/12th scale... durable and easily built based via Wheelie King parts, a Traxxas Stampede tranny and whatever else I had laying around. The result was my below 1/12th scale FrankenCrawler with parts from just about everywhere. The FrankenCrawler was very capable considering it has a Stampede tranny, Wheelie King axles, mix and match driveshafts, EMaxx Shocks (later Axial Shocks) and of course the original prototype of the SPV1 chassis.

It suddenly occurred to me that if a plate style chassis was flexible enough it could be used on anything from a mini to super class builds and satisfy everyone from the Clod, Berg, Wheelie King, Axial, and other builds with about every hole you could need all in one chassis and still be USRCCA compliant. The result was the SPV1 & SPV2 - StampedeProject Version 21Chassis shown here with the original black Derlin prototype. The SPV1 was designed specially as a bolt up replacement chassis for the stock Axial chassis.

I worked up the first below test version on CAD and had Jamie at FLM cut the blank. I mentioned to Jamie that John Robert Holmes would provide un-hindered feedback and we ended up with the second version thanks to some excellent recommendations from Holmes. What we realized was that not everyone wanted all the prolific perforations in the chassis and extreme adjustment capabilities probably were not needed for most people, but we decided to offer two chassis side plate versions one Universal chassis with all the holes in the below chassis, and then a cleaner Standard version like the one Holmes ran at nationals and pictured a little further down. We also beefed up the lower windowsill and moved the front windshield forward for those people that are running a slipper clutch. The chassis plates will all bolt directly to a stock Axial chassis.

Another thing Holmes pointed out right away was how cool the chassis worked with on a Berg setup. We are going to offer the chassis in either Universal (above) or the less holy Standard version (shown below on Holmes chassis running Nationals in Moab with a Berg setup) with either Axial width chassis spacers or narrower spacers for Berg, Clod, Gmade or other Dual tranny builds.

Below represent the final two chassis plate designs with each offered in either 55mm or 81mm (Axial width) spacers. The SPV1 is the more holey (highly adjustable) plate design and the SPV2 is the version that still provides plenty of tuning flexibility, but cuts down on the holes in the chassis.

FLM's SPV1-81 & SPV2-81 Rock Crawler Chassis - For AX10 & Other Driveshaft Crawlers


This super light and durable 81mm spacer width chassis is specifically designed as a direct bodiless stock chassis replacement for the Axial Scorpion AX10 using the stock skid plate. The chassis also works great for anyone doing a custom HPI Wheelie King, or Tamiya TXT/TLT rock Crawler build. The milled 81mm chassis spacers are drilled, tapped and ready for your body panels or scale accessories to be mounted. Both the SPV1-81 and SPV2-81 chassis will accommodate Axial, Losi Crawler, EMaxx and other similar rock crawler shocks in both sprung and droop crawler suspension configurations. THE RTR BUILD
Just to assure everything was lined up I picked up a Axial RTR and simply swapped out the stock chassis with the SPV2-81 (the less holey standard chassis with Axial width chassis spacers). I forsee a rock racer build in my future.

Since I figured I should have a final production SPV2-81 version showing up after all the initial orders are filled, I pulled off the test chassis and dropped on a the last SPv2-81 prototype and snapped a couple more picks. Then gave it a good thrashing. Enjoy the poser pics.

I omitted side body panel for this build. For comps you don't need all the extra top body panels, just a hood, roof, and side panels, but I though it would look cool.

The paint by the way, I did just by laying door screen down, misting with black then following with red then backed in white - not a bad carbon fiber fake. The body panels shown is just a 80mm width piece of scrape Lexan bent to match up with the body posts. The paint that makes it look like Carbon Fiber/Graphite was don just by hand painting "SPV2" in red paint, backing that in black with the airbrush. The rest of the body was really simple. Lay down some door screen spray with black paint, remove, spray with red paint, then pack with white.

One of the things I am really liking is all the adjustment on the chassis especially with the shocks.

This is a great looking chassis for those wanting a bolt-on semi-tube frame style chassis. For the price, these will be hard to beat. Definitely nicer looking than the TCS Edge.

Wow, only $60... If I didn't already have a fully functional custom body-less chassis for my crawler I would totally buy one. It looks great!

On the price, yeah I was stunned too :surprised: when Jamie at FLM said he was going to set the price at $60, especially when most chassis are in the $80+ range easily.

I doubt in the still small crawler market that could happen by one can always hope.

This chassis works great as a slow go crawler and as a high speed basher. Here is a Rock Racer build I did with a Tekin R1 and a Tekin Brushless 3700Kv and a Axial RTR. Fast and a blast to bash.

5000Mh MaxAmps 7.2V Pack mounted on a Axial battery tray/servo mount at the rear - But I intend to drop in my 3S pack at some point.

I have most of the bit now or on order to complete my build - The only minor issue I had is that FLM missed the shock standoffs from my package so they are being sent.

Also I thought you mentioned templates for the lexan cutout was being included.

Might be nice in due course to include some instructions or sample link positions for Noobs like me... :)

This is something quick I did. See how this works. I am at work, so I can't test it until tonight. Then I will work on some better instructions and a setup sheet.

Looks good - be great if it could be marked out so nothing overlapping and holes for the screws to cross pieces marked.

Then one could just tape to lexan and cut...

Might be worth reaching out to TCS as they have some cheap lexan cutouts for the upper link fill in's $3 - They could probably make these pretty cheap...

PS how many AX10's did you buy or did you get sponsored?

I didn't have the CAD files for the cross spacers so I will need to measure those later.... and yes that would be the way to go to just tape and go. My thought was that you need to print two copies anyway for the left and right body panels, and since you only need one hood and roof panel you could just use the hood panel from copy one and roof panel from copy number two. :great:

I have five AX10's at this point and, I think, eleven crawlers at this point. Axial has been good to provide a couple units for articles. Generally by the time they send a new one, the other one looks so bad that it's time for a new one anyway. I generally end up replacing links and tranny cases to get extra photographic mileage out of the chassis before everything completely wears out and that of course in on my dime.

FYI If you do the extended link 4 link mod I found that I needed to drill additional holes to the three at the bottom kink...

Might pay to add a couple of extra holes if you can...

Picks?

On my 4-link build it worked out that the stock holes were were they needed to be, but a lot of people use either shorter or longer links. Most people will actually used much longer upper links that mount at the transmission area. This is actually the preferred positioning as a 4-link seems to work best when the upper and lower links are about the same length.

Of course if you want a few more holes the SPV1 version is available.

I'm mid mods at the moment to install new lockers and a dig - should have some pics up again at the weekend...

No more chassis I just picked up a super...
