Slowmotion videos of a MBX5T and a modified Protos - both brushless
To get a better idea of what the suspension of our cars really does while driving i experimented with a slowmotion plugin wich is able to render inbetween frames. Those are the results:
Mugen MBX5T Truggy Motor: Neu 1515/2Y (1100kv) ESC: Schulze 32.170 Batteries: 11s1p A123 (36,3V) http://bt2007.braintrust.at/ds/rc/mb...deo_teaser.jpg video: http://194.158.136.73/ds/rc/mbx5t_slomos.wmv Robitronic Protos Buggy (modified with truggy arms and tires) Motor: Neu 1515/2Y (1100kv) ESC: Jazz 55-10-32 Batteries: 9s1p A123 (29,7V) http://bt2007.braintrust.at/ds/rc/pr...deo_teaser.jpg video: http://194.158.136.73/ds/rc/protis_run165_slomos.wmv Typical video is shot with 25 or 29,97 frames per second. By reducing a video to 25% of its normal speed 1 second becomes 4 second meaning you have to generate 75 frames out of only 25 existing frames (captured originaly with your video cam). As you can see this plugin does a fairly good job and the results are very smooth looking slowmotion shots. But if you look closer you can see a few rendering errors: the rulux rims of the mbx5t sometimes do appear to be staying still. Enjoy |
nice mbx5 video...the BL motor sounds like a gently breeze in the background!...i will try this!
|
Very nice X5T video! What camera do you use?
|
Very nice videos! Whoever filmed those deserves an A+ for effort :yes:.
|
Othello, could you please show me what is under the hood of the 5T? :)
|
Nice vids! Watching scaled down suspension act exactly as it's full scale counterparts would gets me everytime. I'm gonna go ahead and say it... I love R/C!

I'm normally not a big fan of underlaying a video with music as i want to hear the motor and tires work, but slowing down audio by 75% makes it sound awkward and is rather disturbing for a longer time. @BL_RV0 I used a rather old Canon XL1 DV cam which we aren't using anymore at work. @MetalMan Thanx Metalman. Shooting and editing videos is a hobby of mine besides RC cars of course. @captain harlock Its the MBX5T of a friend of mine. We usualy meet on weekends and drive together on his "homemade" track. A few months ago he drove his MBX5T with a Neu 1515/1Y (2200kv), an MGM 16018 and 6s2p A123. During hot sommer days this setup did run rather hot. He then choose to switch to a HV setup and switched to a Neu 1515/2Y (1100kv), a Schulze 32170 and 11s1p A123. The rather big Schulze controller stays very cool, motor runs cooler too. I found a few pictures which were made after he rebuilt his car with the 11s setup. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/atta...1&d=1223576354 http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/atta...1&d=1223576354 http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/atta...1&d=1223576354 |
Sheesh!!! HUGE thingy, HUGE!!!!
|
And people were syaing my ESCs were big.
|
They are... :rules:

Awesome videos Othello thanks for posting them, I'm very impressed with the quality from a 30fps original, what is the plugin you used and what does it plug into? It is definitely something I want to look into if its not too expensive.
The video is good enough to see the wheels on the buggy flexing away like they were made of cheese, do you know what these wheels were? I would like to avoid them like the plague. |
great videos.. what slowmo plugin did you use?
|
Terrific vids...thank you for them....

@lutach
Schulzes are crazy big ;-) At their price level you would imagine they work flawlessly. But no ... brakes are not as proportional as you would expect them to be. One time you are overbreaking the car while only slightly breaking and the next time brakes are so weak while braking the same way you did before and you are missing the next turn (very inconsistent brakes) ... startup with the Neu motor is very poor (we assume the schulze doesn't cope well with the voltage drop of the A123 cells, but we never tested the setup with lipos). You almost have to push the car to avoid cogging. The schulze will start the Neu up but with severe cogging which can last for 1-2 seconds while making an awfull noise. The Jazz 55-10-32 has no problem starting a similar setup without any cogging and is only 1/5 the size of the schulze. Schulze recommended exchanging every component (besides the schulze of course) to avoid cogging. Oh well ... you know schulze ;-) BTW ... your 10s ESC is very tempting. @nativepaul and A4DTM I tested the twixtor plugin for Adobe After Effects. I used Proline lpr rims without offset and crimefighter LPR tires. I think what appears to be flexing is due to my very worn out arms (suspension). They have a very big play which makes the tire wander around big time. The MBX5T used the same tires but with rulux lpr rims (which are stiffer and not as flexible as proline rims). @to all Thanx for you kind words. |

Very cool video, nice work! Obviously this plugin is a professional product especially when combined with Adobe After Effects which isn’t cheap either.
So which buggy were you driving? The difference between the two drivers is pretty dramatic; as the MBX5T is super smooth while the driver of the Robitronic buggy obviously has a heavy finger. :lol: |
The owner of the mbx5t drove both cars and is obviously more used to the driving behaviour of his mbx5t. The Robitronic Buggy/truggy hybrid is lighter, has a shorter wheelbase and the startup of the Jazz ESC is very sudden making it look more agressive on startup (more easely to wheelie).
The mbx5t is a very predictable and smooth handling car with stock setup. It's way easyer to drive then the Protos buggy/truggy which tends to oversteer. |
I really want this plugin but unfortunatly it doesn´t work with Sony Vegas. Anyone knows about a similar plug for vegas?

bump for a nice cam job. tommorow, iLife 09 comes out for the Mac with some extremely nice features. i am holding off making my first video for RC until i get this. i have had this footage for a few weeks now of DickyT running around our local track. i managed to get some nice audio clips of differant people saying things.. so i am excited to say the least.
|
Thanx. Always fun to combine one hobby (rc-cars) with another one (video editing/shooting). I hope you will enjoy editing on your mac.
|
Wow, those are cool vids! The music is perfect! I like how you can actually faintly hear the impacts of some of the worst crashes. Nice job!
I tried watching these at work, but we only have a T1 and that is shared among ~30 other people. Much better at home. |

What software/hardware do you use for shooting and editing your videos? |
@BrianG
Glad you like them. Yeah had to use a relative high bitrate (1mbit), still quite some detail is "compressed" away when compared to the DV output. @B4maz Editing: Adobe Premiere Slowmotion Rendering: Adobe After Effects with a plugin called Twixtor Video shooting: Canon XL1 DV cam (fairly old "lady " by now, but more than enough for web vids) We use all this stuff at work too. |

Man the quality of your vids are clear... Nice setups!
|
Hey. Thanks! We just got married and the video camera was a gift to ourselfs with the money we got. I haven't even set it up yet. It has an easy button and that's what I used. Hope the video making gets better.

@tha5150
hmm ... link did not work for me. Something about the video not available in my country. Even when i click on worldwide or US the video does not show up. But imovie is a great tool to start with. |
Samething here. Just use some web proxy (hidemyass.com) and it will show up fine. Just copy the link over there and its good to go..
|
you guys get it working? thats sounding like a web blocker at your work.
|
@Hardstyle
thanks. Worked perfectly that way. Some kind of regional block youtube obviously has installed. I wasn't aware of that. @tha5150 Nice track and nice air ;-) Seems as if imovie works out well for you. |
well, again many thanks. it was my first go round with a mac and iLife. both new to me. the video was much clearer before i did the "motion stabilization fix" that iLife offers in the new 09 edition. it kinda takes away a little clarity. over all if you cant see it, i am happy.
i do have to say though, i am pretty good with a camera when i am paying attention to what i am doing. not much movement and i try to keep a good focus on the car and where it is going. checkout DickyT's vids he has of his ol' E-Revo. thing was coming at me at like 50mph and i stayed in the game. later that day, uhm.. well.. the camera wasnt too happy. hense his slight purple eoverlay to all his vids now. poor bastard. although we made a nice trade for a newer vid camera to him and a TC4 to me. all worked out well.. thanks again. and if anyone has some raw footage, un edited, i would love a PM about it. you could upload it to my FTP server. cheers!! |

I always enjoy your vids, Othello. I even followed your tutorial for adding live Eagle Tree data to a live run. Very cool. |
Thanks. Hope the tutorial worked out for you.
