just got a rc18MT....which brushless system?

hey folks, i just got an rc18MT. I wanna go brushless, and i'm kind of stuck as to what to get.

i'm clueless on mini technology.

tekin or mamba?

i've noticed that the 1/10 mambas sometimes have glitching issues with non-digital (2.4G systems)radio systems. do the mini's have the same prob?

do they make digital radios for the mini's?

i know castle has awsome customer service, is tekin's good?

A Hobbywing 35A esc (Or wait for my micro 40A to come out) and a lutach 4 pole micro motor would be good. Here is the set up in action in my Recoil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXhGr2IuxUg.

Can't go wrong with a Mamba Micro Pro or a Sidewinder Micro. As far as 2.4 Ghz radios go you can put one in anything. The receivers are so small now they fit fine in any mini. Don't know anything about tekin's service personally but have always heard good things. I will say that CC's service is the best I have ever dealt with.

Either the castle or the tekin systems are good. I just got a castle mamba micro pro system in the mail today (not using the motor, got a little lehner).

YogyBrushless 10.30.2008 05:13 AM

I'm going to have a line of micro motors that a 4 pole design. There will be 3 models, a 6000Kv, a 7500Kv and a 9000Kv. They are 24mm in diameter and a bit shorter then most of the other micro motors. The link I posted, you can see it doesn't look so bad and the power is way above what my other micro motors provides. I'm going to see if the 40A micro ESC will be good for it and if it is, I'll be having other ESCs to offer everyone.

You are lucky to have a wife who understands our obsession!

if you are running a 18th scale rc on 4s be sure to keep your motor kv below 4k RPMs and probubly the biggest pack you will be able to fit is a 1500mh

drkros3 10.31.2008 02:03 AM

go with the novak 8.5 and a 3 cell. its amazing lol. just remember u have to use novak pinions cause its a 1/8 shaft but .05 mod teeth

azjc 10.31.2008 03:45 PM

I like the hyperion y-22 long and Mamba Micro Pro for some extra torque this will allow you to gear up

blueb8llz 11.02.2008 12:31 PM

mine had glitching with the stock am radio that came with the rc18mt. i have the mamba sidewinder micro (gets pretty hot 115 degrees in 10 mins)with with a KB20-30-15S 6200kv Brushless Motor.
i tried two am radios and still had glitching. i switched over to a fm radio, and glitching was gone.

ESC:
The MMP or Quark 33 pro car are my two favorites. The MMP is the easiest to set-up and tune, while the Quark has the best "feel".

Motor:
Hacker E30-13L (4900kv) or Hacker E30-11L (6000kv) are my motors of choice for rc18t's, m18t's, etc... They are 22.5mm in diameter (larger than mambas @ 20mm dia) and are very smooth to drive.

Also check out:
- Great Planes Ammo 24mm series
- Losi Xcelerion 22mm motors
- Medusa or Neu 28mm series (if you mod your motor plate to accept larger motors).

BlackedOutREVO 11.02.2008 01:50 PM

The combo I like in my 18R is the novak mongoose 10.5, 2s lipo, with a tekin rs esc

Works extremely well, and is the ultimate racing set up

I loved my E30-15L (3700KV) on 4s in my 18t.

DwightSchrute 11.02.2008 04:36 PM

I opted to start with the 3S on the tekin 8.1 system. i saw youtube videos with that combo that blew me away. :gasp:

having never driven a mini, and never anything as small since an rc12L back in the mid 90's, i had forgotten how much fun they were to drive. this truck is already a blast.

BL_RV0 11.02.2008 06:03 PM

3s. Wow. I'd only run 2s with that motor!
I swear you're nuts if you go with 4s.

DwightSchrute 11.02.2008 06:19 PM

i'm gonna buy (2) 2S early next week and try them. i think, the 2s like you said will be plenty, but this way, i'll have 2S, 3S, and 4S(2S wired in series).

i had no idea there were so many mods available for the 18T series. i was thinking about going all aluminum too.

azjc 11.02.2008 07:10 PM

I sank $500 in aluminum and CF upgrades and besides the CVDs for the plastic dog bones it was a waste of money IMO

anson 11.02.2008 07:14 PM

imo the most important upgrade for the 18T series is upgraded steering links. Something like the DP steering link. Also a stiffer servo saver ring. I used a few coils of a gold mini spring over the plastic collar. This removes a lot of the steering slop and makes it that much more controllable.

do you have a link? i googled it, and found a bunch of other posts about people talking about them, but nobody could find them.

anson 11.02.2008 09:36 PM

See if this link works.

blueb8llz 11.02.2008 09:57 PM

from what i have gathered. these motors had the best reviews. not in any order:
wraith 7000kv, hyperion y22 long, golden horizons 3500 and 4700, Aon 4900, and then of course you got your lehners, hackers, and neus.
theres some medusas that do quite well too.

im actually looking for a new motor for my rc18mt as well. if anybody gots one for sale, pm me.
i have a sidewinder micro esc and using zippy 3s lipo.

FYI,

There's a Hacker 3700kv motor available on flea-bay for two-dozen bucks..

E-Revonut 11.03.2008 12:46 AM

I had used the Mamba25/cc 5400kv motor on 2s in my 18t with stock gearing. The thing was a rocket ship for it's size, easy 30MPH. I used a MA 1550 2s lipo that gave me about 30 minutes run time.

blueb8llz 11.03.2008 09:21 PM

nice find on that hacker. although 3700kv is a bit slow for my liking...since im currently running 6200kv on 3s.
im looking for at least a 4700kv .

DwightSchrute 11.11.2008 12:14 PM

this thing is ridiclious fast...i'm thinking it's probably 65-70 mph range but it chews spurs like their bubblegum.

also, has anyone noticed that the dogbones click when you turn? i was thinking about cvds.

I tried a Wraith...I got very poor results but that was on 3s, my fav motors are the Hyperion 22 long and the Neu 1105
