Ofna Ultra LX Pro conversion

Hey guys, been browsing the site for a week or two now and this place is awesome! I recently traded my Sprint 2 for a buggy (see title) that I'm converting to electric (nitro bugs the crap out of me) and figured I'd ask a few opinions.

First off, I know a lot of people have been having problems with the MMM esc, but CC's customer service is second to none, should I go with that?

My plan thus far is to go with a MMM esc (unless I find something more reliable), a Medusa 2200 kv motor, and nimh cells for now (no money to go lipo just yet) but eventually lipos will be in the mix there as well!

What kind of runtimes can I expect from lipos and what kind of speeds with the above setup?

BL_RV0 11.02.2008 11:30 AM

What voltage with nimh are you going to run?

TheRandom1 11.02.2008 11:34 AM

Good question, I'm not sure what I did with my batteries now I can't find them... I think when I was talking to DickyT about it on IM the other day, he recommended running two 6 or 7 cell packs nimh, and when I go lipo I am thinking 5s should work?

BL_RV0 11.02.2008 11:40 AM

How much do you have to spend on the whole setup? We could find some used components and then have enough money to go lipo now.

FYI You will also need to fab a rear brace and maybe an additional front - That chassis can flex rather alot.

This is what I made for my gtp which is basically a LX chassis.

TheRandom1 11.02.2008 01:00 PM

That is not a bad idea for a chassis brace... what kind of chassis is that? (material) the buggy came with a brace/servo holder deal along the right side which has been taken out simply because I don't need the servos right now but will be going back in and should tie into everything else to help out. However, the chassis is pretty thick so... lol.

As far as budget, well... I know the ESC and motor new will cost me about 300 bucks give or take, perhaps another 100 for the RC-M motor mount (already ordered should be here soon) and battery box.

So that's 400 in the plan already, including anything else I find I may need... My budget can be as high as it needs to be, HOWEVER, right now I don't have any spare cash, I'm adding stuff as I get it, lol.

BL_RV0 11.02.2008 02:36 PM

If you have the budget, go lipo!

TheRandom1 11.02.2008 02:54 PM

I will be going lipo, it's just a matter of how long it takes between the buggy being done and having the money for lipo that will depend on how long I run the nimh cells.

Arct1k 11.02.2008 03:49 PM

My pic is a GTP2 which is basically an OFNA LX chassis - The base chassis is thick but will still flex horribly unless braced.

Buggies take a lot of punishment so I would seriously look at this.... It is only a few weeks for a CC 1Y MMM combo at about 270 or less - I would wait for this....

TheRandom1 11.02.2008 03:51 PM

It sure isn't a bad idea... I will probably end up figuring something out to do, thanks for the tip!

BL_RV0 11.02.2008 05:58 PM

And go lipo.

TheRandom1 11.09.2008 10:38 PM

RC-M mount came in a few days ago, and I have a deal pending on the motor and nitro stuff from the buggy so I'll have the battery box on order by Friday I hope!

TheRandom1 04.17.2009 11:08 AM

Well, I never did order that battery box, still haven't decided exactly what I'm gonna do.

However, I just ordered a custom wound outboard motor from a dude on another site, so that'll be here in a week or two, finally.

About damn time I decided to do some work on the poor buggy!

suicideneil 04.17.2009 11:44 AM

Outboard motor? So you're converting this into a boat then?

Speed is a tricky question- given a total weight of around 9-10lbs, then 40-45mph should be easily acheivable on 4-5s lipo, probably more but it depends what you are trying to acheive exactly (racer/basher/speed machine etc).

Im intregued by this outrunner you have coming- any details? (if its a true outrunner and not something like an Align 600XL then the setup will be critical).

TheRandom1 04.17.2009 11:47 AM

I'll get some details on it in a minute. I also plan on running 4S lipo once I get ahold of some.

So I need batteries/charger, and an ESC after this and I'll be ready to roll, I think.

TheRandom1 04.17.2009 11:49 AM

Yes, it is an Align 600XL, made by the guy who did the "silent burnout" project buggy on byt.

brushlessboy16 04.17.2009 12:16 PM

That would be MTX mugen IIRC. I know him personally- hes a pretty cool guy:yes:

TheRandom1 04.17.2009 12:32 PM

Yes, it is MTXMUGEN who is making my motor for me

Louis Grenier 04.18.2009 01:38 AM

what did you do for the rear brace finaly because i am doing one my self and i took a front brace and put it in the rear and i hope the battery tray will help with the chassi, me i decided to go with the MMM and 2200 combo i am still waiting on my batteries, i have ordered 1 6s and 2 5s lipos i just can't whait to get them and finaly try that thing

Louis Grenier 04.18.2009 01:42 AM

oh by the way if any one have an idea for the body i would apreciate because ofna doesn't have a lxone body without holes for the engine and the gas tank

TheRandom1 04.18.2009 09:44 AM

I have not yet decided what I'm going to do for bracing, although it will probably be very similar to the post on page 1.

TheRandom1 06.04.2009 01:17 PM

Just got the motor today and while it took a bit longer than I had really hoped... this sucker is very beefy! I can barely turn it over by hand, and it weighs more than some of the RC cars I've had so far! lol

So as soon as it's installed I'll get a couple more progress pics, then it's time to work on an ESC and batteries then this sucker will finally be able to run a few tests!

lincpimp 06.04.2009 01:34 PM

I think I may have a align motor that was done by MTX mugen. I got it from Ian (bl-rvo). Are these a big improvement over the stock align motors?
