Another CORR conversion

Well I just finished my Slayer to PE Revo brushless conversion so it was time to move on to something new. I owned both a Slash and Slayer, and I really liked the CORR truck concept. The Slash was fun but a little too slow for my taste, the Slayer was faster, but didn't handle as well as it should and it was nitro. The new Associated SC8 looks better but I already had a spare 1/8 scale roller sitting on the shelf so I decided that I would build a CORR style truck based on a 1/8 Kyosho Kanai nitro buggy. This buggy was previous converted to brushless, so the motor mount/battery tray was already in place. I bought a Proline Hardcore body and trimmed it to fit on the buggy chassis. I removed the 10mm offset hubs and replaced with standard no offset hubs. I added Ofna wheels/tires. Since the truck no longer had a rear wing and most of the impacts would be absorbed thru the body I wanted to retain the wide mounting of the Slash body mounts, plus they were made of some pretty tough plastic which would help the body absorb any crash damage. I wanted to mount them to the shock towers for a good strong mount, so I made some simple aluminum brackets, attached the Slash mounts to them and bolted them to the shock towers. The body mounts are both adjustable for height and pretty cheap to replace if they break. Next step, I will start work on the front bumper and nerf bars.

NICE!!!...i was going to convert my other 8ight roller (which i just converted into a MT or mini muggy type truck) into a CORR truck but decided to get the sc8 and convert it to brushless instead...Your CORR truck is going to look nice though..

Shark413 11.06.2008 06:30 PM

Hootie, thanks. The SC8 looks really nice but it is pretty pricey. I do hope to get some of those associated wheel/tires to use on my conversion. It's really hard right now to find CORR style wheels/tires that fit on a 1/8 buggy (17mm hub).

BrianG 11.06.2008 06:48 PM

That does look nice! Any plans to add bumpers?

Also, when I made my CORR, I was concerned about attaching the body mounts to the towers. I reluctantly used the tower in the rear, but it attaches fairly low to help reduce the strain. I am curious how the towers stand up to crashes. But, I suppose not too many are as bad a driver as I am. Yes, I've taken large jumps just to land smack dab on the lid!

lol, I guess I missed that.

hootie7159 11.06.2008 07:18 PM

on horizonhobby.com they have the wheels and body on back order and i think it says mid-november so at least you won't have to wait too long however, the pre-painted and decaled body costs $63.00 but the clear body costs $45 and for 4 wheels it costs $50 a pair....so its either going to be $163 dollars spent or $145....I think the wheels and body are waaaaaay overpriced..

Great looking conversion so far! I look forward to completion. I feel converting a Jammin x1-cr in my future, unless my 18t sells soon. :)

Shark413 11.07.2008 12:34 AM

BrianG, yes I do plan on adding bumpers. I have custom skids on the bottom of the chassis front and back which bolt on using the diff screws. Right now those skids end right at the front of the chassis, I plan making another set and extending them about an inch and angling them up slightly. The Slash bumper can then be mounted to this extenstion. I will provide pictures when I actually start working on it. As far as the body mounting to the shock towers, well they are after market towers and much stronger than stock. I feel that between the extra strength, the additional flex from the stock Slash plastic body mounts and the larger lexan Corr body should help absorb any crash damage. I also picked the shock tower as a mount because the stock buggy mount consist of a single small point on top of the steering plate. I could have used this as a mount point but I felt a single small point, which ok for a smaller/lighter buggy body would not be strong enough for the larger Corr body. We will see, still a work in progress..

Shark413 11.07.2008 06:15 AM

Actually after looking at the mounts I am not sure the Slash parts will hold up. The Slash is a much lighter vehicle. I will run it with the Slash mounts to see how they hold up, and if they break too easily I may have to make some custom mounts.

BL_RV0 11.07.2008 10:22 AM

Looks very nice.

Shark413 11.07.2008 03:15 PM

I was going to work on the front bumper but I found out I was out of the aluminum stock I needed so I worked on the chassis and battery tray instead. I cut a short piece of aluminum stock and drilled and countersunk the holes. This attaches to the center diff mount and serves as a brace and a place to hold the rx and ESC. I was going to run it without the mud guards, but decided to install them anyways. The battery tray is one that I have been using in all my conversions and has worked very well. It is pretty simple but effective, I have never lost a battery and it can hold the longer packs with no problem. I use either CF or aluminum as the base, cut to fit on the chassis. I then add a small stop on the side near the spur, this keeps the battery from contacting the gear in a hard crash. I will add heavy duty straps and most importantly HD velcro on the tray/battery. The straps hold the battery inplace and the velcro keeps the battery from sliding around. Since there are no walls many types of batteries will fit. I need to add padding to the stop and install the straps. The tray is then bolted to the chassis with two M4 screws, I try to use the exisiting holes in the chassis. Either rubber washers or a small rubber pad rest under the tray to raise it slightly to clear the chassis curve and also acts as padding.

mmmmm carbon fiber :)

Shark413 11.08.2008 06:14 AM

Well I got a little more done tonight. Finished the battery tray, added the straps, padding, velcro and bolted the tray to the chassis. The straps are held down using steel washers that have a rubber pad bonded to it, this setup holds the strap but the rubber pad prevents the washer from cutting into the velcro. I have a picture showing how a 4S NeuEnergy lipo fits and another showing how a Zippy 4S also fits, with the Neu being fatter and the Zippy being much longer. They both fit with no problems.

Very Nice! Great looking build.

Ok, a few more updates. I recieved the 6061 aluminum I need to make the front bumper bracket. I already had a custom skid plate fitted, I removed it and used it as a template to make a copy, except I made it about an inch longer. I bent the new skid so that the bumper would be at the right angle to match the body. I bolted the stock Slash bumper to the extended skid and bolted the skid to the chassis.

Here are the basic parts, 3" aluminum bar stock, original skid, new extended skid and Slash bumper.

DickyT 11.11.2008 06:22 PM

This is coming along nicely! keep up the great work.

Shark413 11.11.2008 06:58 PM

Hey guys thanks for the positive feedback. I had a chance to take it out on the track this weekend to see how it handled. The handling was great, just like a 1/8 scale buggy. The tires were a bit slippery, but it added to the CORR style driving (i.e. power slides around the turns). As I suspected the rear body mount, which was bascially the stock Slash mount didn't hold up to the heavier and faster 1/8 scale conversion and it took a beating. Since there is no longer a rear wing, when the truck flips all the impact is absorbed by the body and body mounts. The rear mount was too weak and it got mangled. I decided to replace my original design with a mount off a 1/8 truggy (Kyosho ST-RR). I am thinking about reinstalling the buggy wing mount, and modifying it to support the body from underneath, so it can help absorb some of the impact in crash. Next up, the rear bumper, nerf bars and finish painting the body.

Shark413 11.11.2008 11:20 PM

Ok somebody was asking about the bumper mount, specfically how the top part is mounted, so here are a few more details. I already showed how the bottom is mounted to the extended skid. The top is held by a custom part I made that attaches to the sway bar mount and then is bolted to the top of the bumper. The mount is extremely strong yet flexible so it won't snap off when it gets hit. I also decided to reinstall the rear wing mount as additional brace for the body. I turned the top part of wing mount around so the angle of the wing was flat. I then cut off the winglets (tips of the wing) and added padding to the wing. When the body is on, the wing just touches the rear portion of the body, adding support and will help absorb some of the impact in a rollover.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...3/DSC04952.jpg
This part bolts to the swat bar mounts. I made this from a scrap pieces of CF and aluminum bar stock.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...3/DSC04955.jpg
Then it is bolted from the top.

Top of wing mount reversed to give the wing a flat angle.

Padding added to help cushion and absorb any impacts to the rear of the truck.

rootar 11.12.2008 12:25 AM

awesome idea using the wingmount looks liek you dont even need the other mounts but jsut the wing mounts....

very cool

have you tried it with regular buggy tires and noted weather or not the huge parasail of a body made a difference jumping or any in the handling?

Shark413 11.12.2008 03:11 AM

Rootar, I took it out last weekend for a test run. The project wasn't finished (no bumpers, nerf bars, shocks weren't setup, gearing, etc) but I wanted to get a general feel for how it handled so I could make adjustments later. So I only ran one pack thru it. The track has been updated recently and they took out all the big jumps, so it was hard to tell how it handled in the air. But it was very fast and the two or three Slayers on the track didn't stand a chance.

Shark413 11.12.2008 03:15 AM

Well I had some extra time today because of the Holiday so I worked on the rear bumper. I used a similar setup as the front, I made an extended skid plate and attached a Slayer rear bumper. I then bolted the skid to the chassis, made a few minor adjustments and that was basically it.

Ok another update, paint dry so I got the body finished and mounted. Just need to work on the nerf bars and fine tune the suspension.

TruckBasher 11.13.2008 08:56 AM

Nice bumper mounts...Truck looks great...Hope to see it in action...

Shark413 11.14.2008 05:24 PM

Well I think that's it for now. I was going to mount some nerf bars but I noticed the Associated SC8 doesn't run any special nerf bars, just the regular buggy mud guards. I changed out the oil to 50wt all around, added heavier springs and the piggyback shock reservoirs. I also tried on some black rims, what do you think?
