Project-X Cordless Drill!!!

 I put this in the Projext-X forum because it is somewhat extraordinary.

It started life as a Craftsman Professional 24V Hammerdrill. I treated it well for a few years and then I went and got it stuck in a chunk of Al with a 1/2" bit in the chuck... *poof*

So anyways I couldn't get a new FET module for it so I decided I would go the extra mile. I finished making the motor mount/adapter plates yesterday. It turned out well; normally when I drill this many holes by hand they don't line up like they're supposed to...

It's a KB45 10XL, Turnigy Plush 80A ESC, and I'll use my FP 6s 5000 LiPo. :surprised: I just need to get the 12T 32P 6mm bore pinion and figure out how/where to mount the servo tester throttle. The battery will attach to the bottom just like the original, albeit in a different case.

WOW! thats awesom man!, should be funy to use.. kickback will be a bitch though lol

trev3813 11.08.2008 04:00 PM

Uh, Ben just sent me this link in aim, HOLY CRAP, now attach to a rc car, and you can drill like poles and walls and such. lol

What's_nitro? 11.08.2008 04:00 PM

Yeah, tell me about it! It's gonna be funny when my drill beeps when I plug in a battery... TD57 should put a drill on his Battle Truck!

all you need is one of these on it.

shaun needs to put a speaker on his truck that plays "BOOM-HEADSHOT"

lincpimp 11.08.2008 05:54 PM

I like it, too cool!

Have you found the 32p pinion yet? I just got some novak 5mm bore 32p pinions and they look to made out of an easy to drill material... Not sure if sdp sells 32p with 6mm bore. How are you going to rig up a control button?

suicideneil 11.08.2008 06:25 PM

I would mount the servo tester throttle on the grip- make it thumb controlled like some safety catches on handguns (have the knob sticking through a hole in the side).

Very cool though- I re-cycled my old nimh cells and fitted them into a hacked up cordless drill, much more powerful and more runtime with the 10 4300mah cells compared to 10 1400mah nicads...

I haven't found the pinion yet. SDP-SI doesn't have them, neither does McMaster, and Kershaw would probably want $25 bucks for 1. I'm thinking since 5mm/32P pinions are abundant I might just have to find a motor that has a 5mm shaft and a 30mm bolt pattern and is no more than 45mm in diameter... Now, where would I find one of those???

That is where I was thinking of putting it. Right above the left grip (since I am right handed) with some sort of sprung lever for control. I want the throttle to return to neutral when I let off, so I wont use just the potentiometer knob as the control. I'll be putting a few extra caps on the ESC to make sure it starts smoothly while in a workpiece.

I did that also with an old drill of mine. The extra punch is amazing, and the runtime- no comparison. It did take longer to charge since the "1 hour" charger only put out 1.2 amps!

Like I said, it would be easy to drill out a novak pinion, they are about 10 bucks. Can you get the existing pinion off the old motor, drill it out and drill/tap a set screw hole in it?

What's_nitro? 11.09.2008 12:28 AM

No, the old motor has the pinion machined into the shaft. I was thinking about sending Neu an email to see if I could get a 1515/3.5Y with a 22xx bolt pattern. (30mm dia. X 4mm)

300 dollar drill motor... I like it! I had a kb45 motor shaft turned dowm to 5mm by my machinist. I still have the holder we made to do the job. If you wanted to send it to me I could have it done. Can't imagine it costing more than 20 bucks.

What's_nitro? 11.09.2008 12:49 AM

Hey I was gonna use the 1515/1Y that I have but- 1) It's 2200 kV which means wayyy too fast on 6s and not enough power* on 4s. 2) I would need to make another mount with a 25mm/3mm pattern for it. Not so bad, except I'm lazy. I did enjoy using my bandsaw with that brand-new, 1/2" wide, 18 TPI, bi-metal blade, though. :mdr:

I will see if I can find someone local who can turn down the shaft on the KB45. Who knows, I may try and do it myself.

*I saw that face you just made. It looked like this- :gasp:

It was not too difficult to turn the shaft down, but we made a pvc slide over sleeve to go over the magnet. That gave us something to chuck onto with the lathe, and also shielded the lathe from the magnetic force of the magnet. My machinist did not want to magnetize his chuck, and I do not blame him...

I can get a pic of the coupler/collar if it will help...

What's_nitro? 11.09.2008 01:02 AM

I'll try my luck with a drilled out pinion, like you said, before I go wrecking the motor or spending more "solid" assets on another motor. I just dont want to have it slightly off center and end up damaging the gearbox somehow. I don't know how, ask Murphy- he knows...

lincpimp 11.09.2008 01:10 AM

Do you have a drill press? I usally use mine with a 5mm diamter blank and line the pinion up in the vise with that blank, then swap it out for the 6mm drill bit. That way the pinion is correctly lined up with the drill centerline.

What's_nitro? 11.09.2008 01:20 AM

Hey- good idea about using the 5mm bit to line it up! I actually have one of them somewhere..... It'll be a miracle if I can find it! I'll probably just use a stub axle or something... Of course I need to buy a 6mm drill bit but they aren't expensive.

Stub axle is a good idea, a drill bit can be difficult to line up as it is not solid. I eventually found 6mm bits on ebay, but you have more luck than I did locally...

jhautz 11.09.2008 01:50 AM

What happens when it cogs... lol

Very funny. Looks like it will be an expensive drill though.

e-mike 11.09.2008 02:22 AM

i can imagine the torque:surprised:

TDC57 11.09.2008 05:01 AM

That’s too insane!.. a great addition to the “X” forum.

You built a $300+ drill.. HHHaaaa, HHHHaaa and I thought I was the twisted one…:rofl:

Great Job.. I cant imagine the fricken torque that things has.. :oh:

You need to setup a test..:intello: You know line up (10) 3” wood screws in a row and see how long / fast it takes to screw them in, a screw off (so to speak):lol:

Thant would be a great Video!! (hint, HINT!!)..

What's_nitro? 11.09.2008 06:28 AM

You guys are forgetting one thing: This was a $300 drill to begin with! :rules:

IT WONT!!!!!!!

I may put a slow-blow fuse in there some place. Or, better yet, a resettable breaker.

Arct1k 11.09.2008 08:33 AM

Sorry for a downer but drills spend a lot of time under little load - won't this thing get hot rather quick...

tt-01 mamba 11.09.2008 09:50 AM

A drill in only really used in shot bursts.
I can't imagine him doing a 10 minute drill bash :)

lydiasdad 11.09.2008 02:31 PM

Dan at kershaw designs got me some 32p 6mm pinions.

That would be interesting... But yeah I'm not going to be polishing my car with it or anything extensive like that. If it does turn out to get too hot, then a fan may be in order.

Really..... I was contemplating whether or not I should email them and ask, so you answered one question for me! How much did he charge for them?

traxxasbasher13 11.10.2008 12:58 AM

There $14.99 here is a link to there home page: http://www.kershawdesigns.com/ I can't get one directly to the pinions but hopefully you can find them. Just go to 32p pinions.

traxxasbasher13 11.10.2008 01:00 AM

That thing is going to be one awesome drill.

What's_nitro? 11.10.2008 01:04 AM

Thanks traxxasbasher. It looks like the smallest they have in "stock" is a 15T. I'll email them and see if they can make me a 12T pinion.

traxxasbasher13 11.10.2008 11:11 AM

I glad I could help!

BL_RV0 12.02.2008 01:02 AM

Any progress?

What's_nitro? 12.02.2008 02:00 AM

Hmmm.... Not really. Dan @ KD told me a 12T 32p gear with a 6mm bore would be almost impossible to make since the bore is sooo close to the inner radius of the gear teeth. In other words, it could self-destruct under a high enough load.

I'm far from letting this one go, however. I've gotten the drill case cleared out enough that everything fits inside. That's quite an accomplishment in itself.

lincpimp 12.02.2008 02:16 AM

Hmm, can you turn the motor shaft down and use a 5mm bore pinion? I made a nifty pvc clamp for my machinist when he turned Paralyzed's shaft down (sounds nasty:yipi:) and it turned out fine...

What's_nitro? 12.02.2008 02:30 AM

Since 5mm/32p gears are readily available, I'll probably be using one of the 600XLs I have here in place of the KB45. I'll be going "all the way" with 6s LiPo, too.

So now, in addition to being 3 times as powerful as stock, having 3 times the runtime vs. stock, and being BL to boot, it's going to SOUND LIKE A JET!!!!!

Sounds great. We need a vid of this thing, with good sound!!! I have a milwaukee v28 lithium drill hanging around... Maybe I should convert it to brushless... Just need a good 7s capable esc.

What's_nitro? 12.02.2008 02:57 AM

Geezus! You have one of those!? I should have known... I was going to get one if this project wasn't working out- I'm both thrilled and depressed at the same time.

TDC57 12.02.2008 09:54 PM

:whip: Video!!, Video!! The public wants to see a “screw off” :oh: so to speak!.. :intello:

Yes Linc I know, I know!..:lol:

Yup, have the drill and circular saw. I like cordless stuff, just picked up a new dewalt 18v nicd and a milwaukee swazall, as 18v nicd. Too cheap to pass up!
