Some questions on converting my savage
With flm's kit now it seems easy to do a bl conversion so im trying to crunch the numbers if I can swing it. My question is whats the combo most recommended? Now I have a monster savage
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Savage%20Work/ LST tires and what not so I need a combo that can move those nicely, I dont want a wheelie monster just something controlable to bash with. Can you keep the 3speed and have reverse? Looks like the FLM kit is around the $200 mark so the next is how much the esc and motor are. Thanks! |
get this http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...d=MMMCOMBO2200
and go to maxamps but a 4s 6000 pack gears 20t/52t and you will be set I run a 5s5000 and it hit 49mph a little to much speed for this truck |
Sweet thanks! One thing which motor? 2200?
What about the tranny, I see some locking it in 2nd but id like to keep the 3 spped and have reverse as well, possible? |
hi
i would rather fix it in first gear. you still have plenty of options for gearing it with the pinion (9-25t) and spur (47-53t). imho multiple speed trannys do not really last long with brushless setups. if you take the mmm combo go with the 2200 version. bye rhylsadar |
I run mine with the stock 2 speed trans. No Reverse and geared at 20/52 with 5s and a MMM and Feigao 10xl I hit 48mph
|
I have a XL with a Kershaw Design's motor mount. I run a MMM V2 with a MaxAmps 4S 35C 8400 lipo. It fits under the motor inside the frame. Motor is Neu 1515 1Y, 16 tooth pinion, stock spur, radar confirmed 48 mph. I find its very controllable at that speed for bashing and makes for huge air when jumping. I'm still running the stock 3 speed with no issues. I'm currently doing the CEN GEN diff upgrade, I blew thru 3 stock savage diff pinions. THe truck is otherwise mostly stock, except the tires are Losi Bolt-On with Proline 23 hex rims. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. SO a 3 speed can stay put then, if you take out the one way can reverse be used from the esc? Now are you guys using the savage brakes or the esc brakes?
I have looked at that kershaw setup, buddy is thinking about trying their motors as well. Now here is a question for you doo, I have these tvps now http://www.innovative-rc.com/product...d097e8fedbb3b2 So might save me some $$ if I just go for the mount, whats your thoughts on that? THanks again |
I have the reverse lock out in my MMM I run a Manual Brake I do bust up my diff pinion too

of course i do not claim the multiple speed tranny will not hold up in any case. just my own experience plus several threads i read during the last several years in different forums made me becoming very skeptic about the durability of those in the long run. but if it holds up so much the better. bye rhylsadar |

The only way reverse can be used via the esc/motor, is if you lock it up in a single gear... the same thing applies for the brakes on the esc/motor - must be locked in one gear to utilise the esc/motor in that way. |
I currently have reverse locked-out on my MMM and use the Savage mech brakes. I run on everything from dirt, paved road, grass, gravel pits (the most fun) and baseball diamonds. I'm not sure how many battery packs have been thru it, but I did the conversion as soon as the truck was released, so a summer worth of driving. I hope the tranny lives, because I love to watch the truck shift thru the gears. I did destroy a servo saver steering arm and then a servo itself, I have the big Hitec sevro now with an additional sevro saver right on the servo. I really didnt like the truck until I installed the Losi tires and it made a huge night and day difference for me. I'm not sure why it eats the stock diff pinions, my b-revo has been thru one, but I would have thought the savage would be stronger. I also think I could gear up alittle if I wanted everything runs super cool with my current setup.
|
well in my experiance with MY savage conversion is as follows.
maxamps batteries = junk (puff under any load, look forward to a new batter every run) three speed or two speed not locked = tranny explosions plastic bulks under any bl = diff exploosions cheap motors = junk now for the good good battery = non puffed batteries which = less cost in the end locked tranny = no problems at all flm bulks = no diff problems (except bearings an out drive cups now and then) good motor = happy camper (just go with the castle neu 2200 and you will be fine) so figure in at least the flm bulks in your pricing too. The stock plastic flex too much under all the power. I run 18/47 gearing locked in second on a 3 speed. it is plenty stupid fast. |
Bit to think about now with this info....
Doo540 got any pics of your rig? ok so if i lock it in 2nd I can then use the esc's reverse correct? Also anyone got a write on how to lock a 3speed? maybe sell my 3speed and get a 2speed, nice since I just put the higher 3rd gear in to :sarcastic: |
yes, if you lock it you can use the motor and esc for reverse. As far as selling your 3 speed it depends on what gear you want to lock it in. You could sell the 3 speed and pick up a standard 2 speed to lock it all depends on you. Either way will work fine. I do not have a write up but i can tell to take the clutch in the gear you want to lock and take the screws out so the shoe that comes out is free. Hold the shoe in the out position and jb weld it like that. good to go.
|
Ok thanks. Just a new venture for me so not sure what works and what doesnt. Maybe just run the 3 speed till it blows then deal with it lol, the shifting does sound kool and being electric and quieter it will be nice to hear it.
What is the verdict on this motor fiegao 7XL |
i wouldn't go with the fiegao only because it will not last and will get very hot. It will have plenty of power just not a long life span, all though you could also buy 3 fiegao motors for the price of one neu. BUT the neu will last forever. IF you are on a budget i would look into the medusa motors. I myself have not had one but from what i hear these babies perform on par with neu and are less money than neu but still a hair more than fiegao. As far as the shifting it works fine for a while just the torque slams it into gear and eventually tears apart the tranny.
|
How about on the settings with the mamba set the punch control up? maybe going for a little less torquey of a motor? Just some ideas.
Got a suggestion on which madusa? I have looked at them but not sure as to which model. Yes the neu are awesome but wow big$$ I am on a budget sorta, I was gonna go for the flm setup but think i will just go with kershaw and save some money since I have stretched lcg tvps. right now im tearing down my savage and gathering all my nitro stuff to toss on ebay thats where my funds are gonna come from and my rc18mt im selling. Thanks guys sure I will have more as I go along. |
savage03
Send me your email and I will send you some pics of my savage. I had a 7xl in a e-revo ran for awhile and then it died, just pushed it to hard. Not sure why everyones MA are puffing, I run my trucks hard too, but have not had any issues. I also own some flightpowers and those boys are bad. Pick up a used Neu motor and dont worry about ever having any problems. I currently have five and they are great. I wonder now if maybe my bulks were flexing and causing my pinions to fail? They look strong but who knows. I dont really want to go to FLM bulks, but if thats what it takes to be bulletproof. Any one have some used FLM bulks for sale? ha ha |
With the FLM kit you get the parts to mount a mini servo for use in shifting into reverse like the nitro savage does. So you can run the 3 speed and then just hook up the servo shifting with the savage reverse module. Although... I do hear that the savage reverse module tends to expolde under heavy load so I would only use it for backing out of trouble if you go that route. I wouldnt be trying any standing front flips with the truck in reverse.
Good luck and post up some pictures when you get hit running. I love my FLM savage. Awesome machine. |
fiegao 7XL is to small
you need a 10-11xl this is a very heavy truck |

I would just go with the castle combo it wwill be out in a week or two
|
yep get the castle neu combo with the 2200 kv and you will be a extremely happy camper.
Yes an 8xl or 7xl would be better than the 10. dont know what that other guy was trying to say. The lower the kv the higher the voltage can go and the more torque or raw power you will have. The higher the kv you lose some torque but gain top end. |
Love to go with the combo but I think its gonna be above my budget, I still gotta get all this nitro equipment to sell and a rc18mt. Thought about it and decided the flm kit would be best so thats a nice chunk of change as well.
How about this medusa? MR-036-050-2200V2-5 |
i would go with the 60mm cans only to help with heat. But yes the medusa will be just fine. You can always upgrade later. It will be more money in the end but less upfront.
|
Would this neu work?
1512/1.5d/s keep in mind I have large tires to, LSt. |
in short yes. In long it may get a little warm on hard and long runs
|
ok how about this, i was looking over the medussa motors and theirs like 3 different price ranges, wanna shoot me the one I need? Getting ready to start ordering and wanna make sure I get the right stuff :)
|
Whats your budget for the whole thing. We can make a better recomendation if we knwo what you have to spend. If you go with the medusa on this big truck I would go for the 70mm motor at least, even the 80mm motor with those big tires. the 60mm is more of a buggy motor. so is the 1512 motor you referenced.
|
Well for sure im going with the FLM kit and a mamba monster esc really the up in the air deal is the motor but it needs to be in the range of $125 or less, their was a guy selling that neu on another forum so why I asked.
Can you give me a link to the madussa motors you recommend please or anything else in that range, love to do a neu but at $200+ thats way out of range right now. |
if you subtract the price of the mamba monster from the castle combo, the castle neu comes out to be about $130 which isnt bad at all
|
Only thing is when are they gonna be available? Castle seems to take awhile to release new stuff.
|
true but it probably won't be too long now...and im sure it'll be worth the wait:party:
|
Ready to buy the FLM kit, anyone know of a source with the lowest price?
|
http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...Fsavage&cat=41
Best place I know of to buy it. And as an added bonus you get a great forum like this to help answer questions as you get into your build. |
Ok I see in the store the 70 medusa cans but no 80, where si I find those? This will fit the flm chassis ok as well?
|
The 80mm Medusa motors will fit. They will be in the store once they start shipping. The place jhautz linked to is the best place to buy the FLM conversion kit.
|
lol so whats gonna ship first the neu's or medusa
|
We'll have to see.
|
Got my flm kit today and my irc losi shock mounts so the build begins! I will start up a build thread in a bit. I must say no drawings or manual? This outa be fun lol
