My Hobao Hyper ST Pro conversion

So this is what I have done...
Let the pictures speak...

Heres where I started, bought it used from Spain.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2742.jpg

Heres how it should look like, going to be pretty tight.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/DSC00186.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/DSC00185.jpg

Modded servos positions and tray, and test fitting battery trays. Also flipped centerdiff.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2757.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2756.jpg

And another pictures, of that tight place.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2763.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2762.jpg

Brakes wont fit, yet...
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2761.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2758.jpg

Currently car is "broken", that cheap motor just died, lost its magnets.
Going for Medusa Afterburner V2 80mm 2200kv, that should do it.
Changes after those photos are minimal, just need that new motor and realised, that battery leads will fit better if I flip batterys.
Those mechanical brakes are currently "emergency" brakes, if receiver losts connection, those will aply, as I dont have 3-channel mixing.

Some specs:
Batterys: Zippy-R 4S 4800mAh x2
Gears: 12/52
Centerdiff: Spider, Losi 30k
Motor: dead KD36-74-06XL 2800kv

Jabe 11.24.2008 09:15 AM

Now brakes WILL fit.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2764.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2765.jpg

Making brake links, now servo is flipped, as its not like that in pic.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2766.jpg

Making battery trays, from 1,5mm alu.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2773.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2772.jpg

Everything in place except MMM.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2775.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2777.jpg

After little drive in snow.

lutach 11.24.2008 02:46 PM

Looks like you had fun . Your truggy looks good.

big greg 11.24.2008 06:53 PM

you got some cojones drivin it in the snow like that lol, but i guess you need it for that motor lol, so your runnin two 4s in parralel? for 9600 mah? that alot of runtime lol, does make it look cramped tho

DRIFT_BUGGY 11.24.2008 07:13 PM

Top work, good to see you make your own battery trays

Tobbe 12.08.2008 10:23 AM

Someone who is not afraid of snow I see:rofl:.
Nätti auto muuten!:yipi:

While waiting for my Medusa 80mm to be finished, I put torsen in center...
Torsen it self is by Hong Nor, gear is from HPI Hellfire and is modded to fit that torsen. With that torsen, i had to get rid of mechanical brakes, as that torsen didnt had outputs that would fit brakedisc's, anyway those were just for "just in case".
Here its fitted to chassis, that gear is 52t and it fits chassis if you raise centerdiff about 1,5mm.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2870.jpg
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...o/IMG_2871.jpg

Jabe 02.13.2009 01:43 PM

Got my Medusa 80mm 2200kv today, with 4S its just great, it never got over 25C with heatsink and outside temperature ~-5C, running 14/52 gears.
I had Keda motor in it just before, and it had temps 45C with 12t pinion, some difference there, Medusa is solid quality.
I have HotRacing pinions, just keep away from them, if you dont own blowtorch, as those are not hardened. I just stripped that 12t...
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_Kuva0019.jpg
Now i have hardened 14t and its durable.

Metallover 02.13.2009 02:23 PM

Is it just me or do the wires on the batteries look a little small?

Jabe 02.13.2009 06:03 PM

Well, you know chinese "quality", someway you gotta compensate poor copper...
Those are Zippy-R lipos, those arent even sold anymore, dunno why.

Jabe 02.17.2009 08:41 PM

Uploaded little video, from test drive.

Made some update about body, here are some pics.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_Kuva0036.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_Kuva0037.jpg
It looks like Revo now... truggy with monster body.
Color are going to be something like green and black.

ssspconcepts 03.13.2009 11:15 AM

Jabe,

How is the torsen diff holding up to BL power?

How many runs do you have on that Torsen diff?

What batteries, gearing, motor kv did you use most while running the torsen diff?

Would you recommend the torsen to others?

Data is appreciated. Thanks.

Jabe 03.13.2009 12:20 PM

Torsen is holding pretty good, changed oils after ~2h, i thought i do break-in. No wearing to be noticed.
It works great on launch, it does wheely for less than 0,5 sec and then off it goes.
My gearing is about stock, changed torsen spur to 52t (had to be made) and pinion is 14t, motor is Medusa 36-80-2200kv with 2x 4S Zippy-R 4800mah 25C.
I dont know if its torsen or my chassis rear balanced, but it understeers.
Well its pretty hard to say yet, how it does, as we have snow on ground here, so not much traction, to test transmission strenght.
But yeah, for those who suffer from front wheels ballooing with open centerdiff and wheelies with solid centerdiff, torsen is great choise.
I use HongNor (OFNA) torsen. There is many other brands, prices go 60-200€.
Torsen is more common centerdiff in RC Formula Offroad and front/reardiff in Buggy competitions.
edit. I have upgraded torsen's bolts that hold spur from 3mm to 4mm. To make it more durable.

Overkill 03.13.2009 03:05 PM

Your truggy looks awesome, am really liking the truck body on it, can't wait to see it painted

Jabe 03.18.2009 10:04 AM

Here its painted...
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2928.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2929.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2930.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2931.jpg

Jabe 03.20.2009 01:19 PM

Little update... As the new body is bigger and wing has to come through the body, if i need to take body, ill have to take wing off also, so i made "quick release".
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2934.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2937.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_2939.jpg
Things used, M3 bolt that comes with servos, that has big flat head, then pillow ball that is cut half, and washer to keep pillow ball half from sinking to plastic.

Jabe 06.02.2009 04:39 AM

Made some update on my car, changed batterys from 4S to 6S and made new batterytrays as these new batterys are smaller.
Two Zippy Flightmax 2650mah 30C 6S in parrel, i just need connectors to finish my upgrade.

If someone knows harder springs than Hobao truggy grey, please tell me, i have tried Losi purple springs, Reckward extra hard springs.
Currently im using Hobao rear springs in front, so it doesnt need any preload and rear uses rear springs with 14mm preload, new batterys are little lighter also so it helped allready.

Here are the pictures.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_3813.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_3814.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_3815.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_3816.jpg

And if someone knows where i could buy carbon shocktowers, please tell me, i need to lighten my truggy.

TruggyLuva 06.02.2009 08:59 PM

What kind of run times are you getting out of those two 3 cells?

I looked for CF parts for you for about 10 minutes... I can't seem to find anything; even on the Hobao site...

suck my wake 06.02.2009 09:34 PM

TruggyLuva: Im using two 6S packs in parrel, so i have 5300mah to be used. Havent got to test it yet, as im waiting connectors from HC, should be shipped in few days.

Jabe 06.16.2009 10:59 AM

Just got to test my 6S setup, its awesome, i had to gear it down because 2200kv motor, i have 11t pinion (cant fit any smaller) but it was fast.
I have ordered medusa 80mm 1600kv motor, so i can have "normal" gearings.

Rebelgium 06.21.2009 04:11 PM

Why don't you try this motor from HC.
In the reviews you can read some have had great results in some MT's (I think it was an E-maxx).
It's a beastly motor.
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...hless_Inrunner
I also read about some problems with it running hot. But you could just drill some holes in the front and read endbell to be sure...

And ofcourse It's super cheap for some awesome power!

Oh and that first motor you used, was that a KD36 motor from HC? They are known to be low quality... The KB45 motors however aren't! ;)

Jabe 06.22.2009 01:01 PM

Ill stick with Medusas, these are great i have allready ordered 1600kv version of 80mm and its on its way to here.
I wont buy any chines crap motors anymore im done with one dead motor. Anyway that KB45 wont fit as its too big (wide) thats why i use Medusas as those are 36mm.

Frozen72 06.22.2009 10:59 PM

Hey, I love your conversion. I'm thinking about doing something similar but running a 12S set-up.

RevoRevHed 06.23.2009 01:50 AM

Hi Jabe, I have just bought the motor mount from rc monster. Its the only one i have been able to find. It states the motor will be situated rearward but yours is mounted front. Is it just a matter of turning it around? As i too would like the batts at the back of the chassis. I can probably work it all out when it arrives but a heads up on any problems you have had would be greatly appreciated.

Jabe 06.23.2009 10:02 AM

Well its just turning it around if you use stock centerdiff, otherwise you might need to grind center stiffner abit.
But be aware that front brace limits motor and gearing just little, if you use 36mm motors and 52t spur, then your smallest pinion would be 11t. But its same even if you have motor in back.

Jabe 07.09.2009 03:54 PM

Here is something i came up with, removing esc battery wires, as mine has still plugs.
Havent tried it in truck yet, to see if it will work.
Now i just wonder, should i still use CCBEC to power my steering servo, or should i leave it for MMM to handle.
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_IMG_3871.jpg
I could have made it to have one pair of plugs less, but ill need that Y-harness to charge my batterys and those CC 6,5mm plugs are tight, so it would be pita to tear them off each time.

IIRC HPI Hellfire springs will fit. They are nice as they are color coded and nicely labeled w/ spring rate charts. They are same length for F and R.

IDK about CF towers. Thought I read on the OFNA forums once that someone was making custom ones, but really, if you want to go all out and do things like that you are best off getting a more high end truggy in the 1st place. So the advice there went. Don't get me wrong, its a great truck, love mine, but it is what it is.

Finnster 07.09.2009 04:09 PM

I'm still using my MMM v2 to power my Rx and 333oz servo. Over a yr and no probs.
(knock on wood)

Jabe 08.20.2009 01:54 PM

Heres video that i made today.
Just bashing in sandpile.
Brushless power + strength of HoBao is exactly what this video holds...
No damage, only wheelnut come loose and lose.
