Converted my Savage to BL finally!
Well I looked into this some time back before the craze hit and people were making their own motor mounts which I couldnt do so sat and waited and was rewarded when FLM did a chassis kit for it. I like nitro and all and this savage started life as the original when they first hit the shelves but it really can be a pain at times, loud neighbors just love you .
With BL power where it is now their pretty much just as fast if not faster then a nitro without the mess. So here it is, still a few things waiting on, got some shock parts I need ordered might be here today and of coarse the esc and motor, trying to hold out for castle to ship the monster max combos, waiting on a echeck to clear and got some funds coming from Max but will still be short so see how it goes once they ship. waiting on the monster max esc combos to ship so the 2200.
Beginning to think no one liked me monster :( Trying to decide on a body any of you got some pics with various lids that fit these tvps? |
Any thing that will fit the cen nemesis will fit this beast. I fact i had the escalade proline body for the nemesis and it fit perfect. looks good on the build there.

I have the escalade to but cant recall for which rig but it fit my ext. tvps I had at the time it doesnt fit these well tho, I will dig out my old f650 and see how it looks. I have a new graverobber I tried as well but it to short.
Got the shocks all mounted last night so I will get some pics up in a bit :yes: |
no the escalade has to be for the nemesis in order for it to fit. Look at my profile pic.

Here is a update, got the shocks all mounted now, things take some serious oil. Got the hard anodized bodies and RcRaven progressive springs. Deciding on a body, the f650 fits it nicely and the escalade body fits good to so got those 2 so far on the list.

Ok got the brake linkage setup, sure would like reverse without having to use the servo method, see some using ofna center diffs but guess have to wait for flm or someone to make mounts for us less crafty guys lol.
Castle is suppose to be shipping the monster max combo on the 10th the 2200 motor so if thats the case I will be running soon. Now what gearing should I start with? Keep in mind LST tires also. What pinion size does this motor take also? Thanks |

Yea as a nitro I can eat up dogbones, why I have a pit box with a bunch of spares but from what im reading bl is even harder on stuff. Really hoping the 3speed will hold up just love to hear the shifting. I went ahead and just bought 4 xl dogbones and the outer axles, just need the diff outdrives but I may just wait and grab the whole diff assemblies that guys sell on ebay.
Thinking about a metal spur to, opinions? Thanks for the reply to. |
Like to order a pinion gear soon so need some gearing suggestions and which pinions? See theirs a couple different kinds mod 1 and whatnot.

someone else may chime in with gearing options for you - i'm not one to recommend such things -lol- If you go to the steel spur/pinion combo, make sure you are running hardened pinions...
Also with that 3speed, adjust the points to shift far later than a nitro, as with my LST, brushless rips through the gears much quicker and with a bit more brutality to it - and watch for the big 'CLUNK' as it grabs hold of the next gear -lol- |
I see some use a bec from castle, do I need this also? Just realized after locking the tranny into second I wont need the manual brakes so I can now remove the brake servo.
I have read some were worried about the servo plate and only having the 2 screws holding it in place, after looking I to would be a little concerned but I have very simple fix, something FLM should have looked at I think. Take a crossbar that you use between your tvps and you will have to make holes to match on the servo plate then lay it on top of the plate and it will screw into the plate since the holes are threaded, then you will need to drill a hole on each side of the tvps and there you go nice and strong. I will get some pics that will show it much better its bedtime. |

I personally dont think your going to like the 3 speed. On my erevo I thought I would like it but It was really kind of a pain. I ended up keeping it a 2 speed but I geared it tall enough to where I could use 1st for most all my driving and I just had 2nd as an overdrive. I was pretty much forced to let off as it was shifting becuase when it shifts it shifts hard and will most likely lay you on your back if you have good batteries.

Mailman brought me a surprise today, my monster showed. Man this thing is huge, totally badass. Now someone in another post said to get mod 1 pinions so I did and im curious it sounds horrible next to the plastic spur, I got 2 novak hard pinions, mod1 for sure right? Hope so at $10 a pop hate to be stuck with them.

I had it to wher their a little play. So mod1 is right then? That was a 16t I bought a15 also but now im afraid to put it on, these are the novak hardened ones to

OK been at this for at least the last 2hrs now and im no where better off, new pinion and spur and ive tried setting it with different mesh and no matter where its set it makes this horrible sound, took a small clip so you can hear it.
Hope some of you will chime in not sure why I cant get replies, got the best place on the net far as im concerned for setting up BL stuff :yes: I also pulled the motor away from the spur and it will roll just fine with no odd sounds just when the motor is meshed up to the spur. Thinking it was the pinions but I havnet got a real clear answer on that, I see most are using the metal spurs so not sure if I need that but I saw a couple say they are using the plastic ones so guess its possible. Maybe the pinions you have are not actually mod1 pinions?? I was sent some .8mod pinions that were sounding just like what you are describing... Either that, or you have the mesh set too close or far apart... the pinions/spur gears should be smooth when rolling... Maybe order a pinion from the rc-monster store? i know it's another cost - but you will always use them =) I noticed you mention it before, but it's probably not a good idea to rev with the wheels off the ground... You are better off pushing the truck along the ground to test the mesh if that's what you are trying to achieve =) I like your servo plate brace btw... if i have any problems, i'll be adding one for sure =) |
Mesh is what I thought to but man I have been playing it for hrs now and got nowhere, just seems no matter where I set it it does this. Here is the clip in the thread if it helps and here is what I bought for pinions.

i don't know about that gear mesh. Try a RC-Monster pinion? If you want your truck wider go with the flm wide arms. Very tough and the dogbones are near bulletproof, free replacements if you do break one.

You mean your pinion wore like that against plastic spur? :oh:
Somethings fishy with those pinions, IMO - a decent hardened pinion does not do that even with metal spur. |
What ive been thinking might contact novak and show them. Suks if I gotta order new pinions cause I wont get it before xmas now :no:

Are you sure that your pinion was allright before you put it on place?
The teeth seem deformed and are/seem too thick at the right side (don't fit the spur), hence the noise & wear at spur. |
Well didnt notice anything wrong when it came out of the package, that one there is the 16t and I bought a 15t so when I took it out last night I looked it over and its fine, odd thing is its narrower then the 16t was but as you can hear its making the noise to.

Has anyone that has the flm kit ever had issues with the motor mount? Like not cut out correct or anything, I have read many times on various forums that they tend to have parts not always turn as they should basically fitment issues. Just wondering if it not at the correct angle maybe? Grasping at this point cause I cant figure it out and hate to toss more moeny at it that I really dont have. |
Well update,
This thing is a blast is all I can say. I played around with it earlier in the day in the driveway just putting around and noticed it would become quiet and normal sounding once it got going just as its rolling to a stop does it make that noise, so ran it a bit slowly then checked the gears every so often and they were fine, this was just on a 2s. Then got the adapter wired up and a second lipo charged so I had 2 of my 2s lipos in there running like a 4s and hauled it off to the ditch area. Most of the guys are running 6s which to me is to much unless you just wanna street runs in a offroad enviroment I think it will eat up the drivetrain, the 4s is perfect I think and it never got hot so im pretty sure I can go up a couple teeth, even so its fast now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VRADFNEFcI |
I had no issues with the FLM motor mount man... If the motor mount is off, you will most likely be able to see it by looking at the motor can's lines and the chassis' lines...
Did you get anything back from novak?? RCBoyz are usually pretty good if you contact them too - maybe they can help possibly? Good to see it's up and running, but if it still grinds as it comes to a hault, i'd be looking at getting some RCM pinions man - you cant go wrong, and any noise like that in the gears is not a good thing to keep doing, even if it's only for a couple seconds at a time - the truck will be stopping alot, so those couple seconds will be alot longer after a run! =) |
NOthing from novak cause their shut down till the 26th and I talked to rcboyz some yesterday basically offered me a discount if I wanted to buy more pinions and a hpi metal spur which im considering but I no idea why its doing that noise I just cant see anything wrong totally confused on this. I did order a robinson racing pinion a 17t to see how those are. If a metal spur is the way to go let me know but ive seen some on here using the plastic ones so shouldnt be a issue.
