How hot can you run the cms 36-9000

Just received my cms 36-9000 hooked it up to the mamba max esc. and ran the motor with no load for about two minutes varying the rpm. Temp after that was 130. Does this sound right. Battery 7cell nimh.

dirt101 12.16.2008 05:27 PM

motors get hot when under no load. the 9000 wasnt really the best choice for a slash, but castle recomends keeping them under 200. I say keep it under 180 and you should be fine.

slash_48 12.16.2008 05:32 PM

I known it is not a good choice just want to see what it will do on 2s lipo for the fun of it. Going to try 13/90 for gearing, might be fun to play with from time to time.

why did you run it no-load? that can damage the magnets easily

slash_48 12.16.2008 07:50 PM

To make sure it works. Have snow and its about 20 degrees outside. Will test it the truck when it warms up some.

Brushless motors don't take kindly to light loads. Brushed motors don't like really heavy loads. I believe CC uses unloaded ratings, so at least if you run it on the bench you aren't getting ~11000 kV, or something equally rediculous, which would make it much easier to over-rev the motor.

I hope you have some good packs to run that motor with. 9000 kV is gonna draw a huge spike of current when it starts up. If your packs aren't up to snuff then it's going to feel sluggish. If you decide to keep that setup in the Slash, adding another capacitor or two to the MM will help.

I have max amps 2s 6500 30c hard case batteries. The setup won't be permanent, just playing around. When I buy the medusa that will be permanent. I only ran it for about 2 minutes maybe less and not at full throttle just to see if it worked incase i needed to send it back. To cold and snowy to test outside, hopefully next week.

Ok. That pack should be enough. Just make sure, when you do run it, that you check all the temps every few minutes to be safe.

slash_48 12.17.2008 12:19 PM

I will be watching the temps. I have a 5700 that I run also on 2s,3s and 7cell nimh. After christmas I will be getting the medusa 36-50 4800 v2,like to have different combo's to run. I also have a old novak SS 5800 setup.

sleebus.jones 12.17.2008 05:35 PM

5700's run hot in slashes, I can't imagine what a 9000 is gonna do.

slash_48 12.17.2008 07:21 PM

Depends on your gearing, mine runs about 115 to 125 on 2s and about 140 to 150 on 3s lipos. Can't really test the 9000 yet, will let you all know when I do.

my buddys 4600 ran hot, i cant imagine that 9000kv will last long

slash_48 12.18.2008 10:40 PM

I have a 5700 and the temps I get are 115 to 120 2s and 140 to 150 3s lipos, batteries 85 to 95, gearing for this is 17/86, 20 to 30 minute runs. I know the 9000 will probably run hot since it is made for touring cars, just want to see want it will do in the slash geared 13/90,that should help keep the temps down. Will let you know the temps once I am able to test.

slash_48 01.05.2009 11:04 PM

Well it's been awhile, I have the 9000 in the slash and have only been able to run it in the garage spinning doughnuts or driving slow. The motor is insane with the gearing I have on it 14/90. The temps so far have been good on the motor only 104 but the esc. 140 to 150 battery about 85. Will post more when I take it to the track. After this I will be testing the medusa 36-50 4800 v2 I received today.

slash_48 01.06.2009 08:16 PM

Took the slash to the track and test it today the temps on the motor after about 8 to 10 minutes were 137 but the esc. was 190 battery was 75. The motor over powers the slash a lot,not a good off road motor. When I got home I put the medusa in. I think I'm going to like this motor a lot.

emaxxnitro 01.07.2009 06:35 PM

ok so the esc should not be getting that hot! max temp safe for the esc is 150* you need a fan bud! or a mmm.

slash_48 01.07.2009 07:34 PM

Not going to run the 9000,the medusa has taken it place permanently. The 9000 is going to be my drag motor on 3s.

1maxdude 01.09.2009 05:26 PM

Hey, how did it do at the track though? Probably too overpowering to really enjoy. Hey, I live right above you. When this apocalyptic weather pattern stops, I'm going to continue my speed runs and break past 70 this year. Did you take your slash to tacoma?

slash_48 01.10.2009 05:44 PM

To much motor for that small track so not that fun. Yes went to tacoma. I wil Be going on monday or tuesday to test the medusa.
