Looks good Chris, do you plan to run a 4 channel stick radio with it?

I just picked up a dx5e, a bit low on features, but useable for what I will do. Only paid 65 bucks for it, used once...

Arct1k 12.21.2008 11:17 PM

I have a POS 4 channel am setup - But given that I'll be standing 3 yards away should be fine...

Driving stick with dual MM is doing my head in a bit - Steering is fine but independent fwd/back etc will take some getting used to... Only issue now is the servo is really not up to the job.

I think I'm going to have to pinch a 5955 from the GTP...

Generally you use a radio that will allow you to mix the 2 throttle channels with the left/right on the left stick. That way forward and back drives both motors togehter, but any angular motion will make the rear motor stop or drive backwards (I will not be able to do this with the dx5e, but I will be using it for a scale truck and a roll back flatbed 6x6). I guess that you could use the left stick for the front, and the right stick for the rear motors, and just manually do dig and other functions (huge burnouts!) with your fingers. Would be weird to use only one stick for steering, but both for forward motion. I guess the left stick could be front motor and steering, and the right stick would be rear motor and rear steering. Sounds like a real mind f@#! to me... I guess you would get used to it, like playing video games on a new controller/system...

I do not have a dual motor/axle crawler, but they do seem cool, and I really like the 4ws on my cr01. I set the M11 up to do either crab/locked/opposite steering for the rear axle with the push of a button. Nice to have it proportional with the front steering and only have to turn the wheel to have both sets of axles work.

Nice build....what a difference! What scale/class would that truck fit in?

I'm using the channel-mixing trick on my Berg. I have it setup already, and by the looks of the LEDs on the ESCs, it is working properly. I have the Futaba 6EXAP, using the "Elevon" mixing feature set to 100%. It's gonna be a pain to drive (at least for a while) because the steering is on the left stick now.

Arct1k 12.22.2008 11:00 AM

This is in the super class - with about a 17->17.5" wheel base...

Well the radio has nothing fancy on it at all - no mixing etc - I can't even set end points for the servos which is a PITA...

I'm going to try for a while with what I have and if I can cope with stick setup I'll look out for a used DX6 and maybe trade my spare DX3.0...

I'm using right stick for front and left stick for rear - Very tempted to go to three channels with permanent 4WS and just a switched rear dig.

I just bought a couple of 7955's for it ($90 each so a bit of a steal) and a set of Moab XL's so the turning should be a bit better.

The integy 55t's will stay on until they die and then I think I'll get a couple of outrunners for it...

4ws is not allowed in comps in the 2.2 category hence I locked out the FLM-AX10

- 8/9T pinions
- Set of MOAB XLs

eek

ssspconcepts 12.22.2008 09:39 PM

Wow...what a night and day transformation. Crawlers are something that I never really looked into seriously but your project sure is enough to spark one's interest. It would be nice to get some over the shoulder video once you get proficient (so we can see the crawler move in response to your transmitter).

t-maxxracer32 12.22.2008 09:40 PM

looks like you threw away the red crawler and bought a new one

very nice!

Arct1k 12.22.2008 09:44 PM

In reality I kind of did - I kept the chassis, 17mm adapters, some gears, motors and driveshafts - everything else is new...

Arct1k 12.31.2008 11:29 PM

Final cut!

Nice.

_paralyzed_ 01.01.2009 02:33 AM

awesome build, can you still call it a clod? I'm failing to understand the direct bec power. Were you worried about frying the rx?

lincpimp 01.01.2009 04:03 AM

Looks good chris, I have always wanted to do a super class crawler, but always seem to mod up a MT to something crazy like the 6x6 maxx truck...

Yes something I picked up on the crawler forums - With the amount of amps 2 7955s would pull with the heavy tires - 10z lead in each front 4oz in each rear - apparently the spektrum rx's can go pop.

It was a bit of extra work to make up the connections but nothing that isn't reversible and if it saves my rx it seemed like a good idea.

_paralyzed_ 01.01.2009 05:32 PM

thanks, I guess I answered my own question. I voted for this rig.

TDC57 01.12.2009 03:11 AM

WOW..:surprised: Great progress Chris..:intello: How long is it?? and how much does it weigh??

very cool.. I'm assuming you'll be posting video of it soon..

Arct1k 01.12.2009 07:29 PM

Err hmmm well it has been snowing a lot and I had another couple of builds to complete and then started on the tracked CRT.5....

But in honesty I was struggling a bit with stick - I've got a reversing (for steering) and regular (power) y harnesses going in soon...

lincpimp 01.12.2009 09:02 PM

Hmm, so you wanna sell me the dx6?

I just received my clod based crawler in the mail. Also got a sweet deal on 4 rcwd knuckles, integy hd gears, steel skids, servo mounts and axle braces. He even threw in adj motor mounts and full bearings for the axles.

Any chance of a link to the bec wiring schematic? I am guessing that it is slightly more involved than just wiring the + and - on the servos to the bec output and let the esc internal bec power the rx. I read somewhere that the servos need to share ground (or something like that) with the rx in order to work correctly.

I plan to run a 8711 for the front steering and a 9100t for the rear. So I figure the power requirements may be a bit high for those 2.

Arct1k 01.12.2009 10:08 PM

You have it on the wiring - Just black and red on servos to bec outputs - If you use the esc bec and all drive off if one battery no need to link the grounds.

I was having issues as initially as using 2 batteries...

I'm using the DX6 for flight sim at the moment... I'll try it again in the future probably as you do really need it for the clod...

Yep, I'm gonna use a single MM, with a piar of 550s in parallel. I can mix the 3rd channel with the steering and have selectable rear steer that is proportinal with the front.

I will only run 1 lipo, most likely a 4200 3s pack (seems like all of my crawler use the maxamps 2100 cells). So running a single ccbec should be ok. I will wire the servos directly to it and use the mm internal bec to power the rx.

Arct1k 01.12.2009 10:59 PM

That will be my first try - 2 MM and two servos even with mixing was doing my head in

Its not too bad, try mixing the servos first, makes a bit more sense when you can see what they are doing. The M11 mixing is not really obvious, but with a little fiddling I figured it out.

Arct1k 01.12.2009 11:50 PM

I got it all figured out for mixing and using the switches to turn it off and on - It is very easy on the DX6 - you can mix any 2 channels and use switch to put them on an off.

Hard to tune throttle - I think I'll start with just putting a y on that...

Might drop to a single MM and use a servo for 3 position dig... Too hard else...

Ahh, servo with a micro switch? That does sound interesting, Chip Cross uses that on his berg axle 2.2 rig. With the correct switch you can have freewheel or bridge the motor wires to emulate a locked axle (depends on the motor and gearing how well that will work) I was thinking about doing this on my clod, but I will try the truck without and see how it does!

TDC57 01.27.2009 03:27 AM

So do you have any video of this bad boy yet Chris??? or are you still working on it ??

P.S.
Per the news it's FRICKEN COLD in NY.. It sucks to be you rite now!.. It’s been high 70 here!..:gasp: or i.e. nice to be So-Cal.. hahhahaaaa ..:intello:
