5000mah 4S Lipo - How many miles per charge?

With all the new GPS units coming out these days, has anyone ever discovered how many miles per charge a particuliar setup gives?

I got a new toy for Christmas, so I MIGHT be experimenting with this.

Metallover 12.26.2008 10:36 PM

Out of the blue, I'd guess 1.62 miles for something around 5000mah.

Takedown 12.26.2008 10:41 PM

It all depends on throttle use, how many times you punch, how fast you drive, turning etc.... Alot of variables. Theirs no definate answer only vague estimates.

Metallover 12.26.2008 10:45 PM

If someone plans on getting a gps and tesing this we should make it a challenge to guess how far it goes. If someone is getting one post your setup before you run it so we can all speculate.

I got a Garmin Nuvi 200 for Christmas. I'm pretty sure it's capable of doing this.

It displays trip information. Such as:

Average speed
Max Speed
Total Trip Time
Plus it has an odometer!

All I have to do is figure out where/how to strap it on for the ride. LOL

OK, let's make a guessing game out of this! You guys guess on how many miles you think it will go on a single charge.

Stock E Revo converted to Brushless.

ESC - Monster Mamba V2 using internal BEC
Batteries - 4S Lipo 5000mah 20C - About a year old but still accept 4800mah per charge when using 3.0v lvc.
Motor - Medusa 36-60-2000 using Mod 1 gearing 18/52

I'll get this figured out and gather some results. :yipi:

Metallover 12.26.2008 11:15 PM

I'll stick to my original guess - 1.6 miles

trev3813 12.26.2008 11:18 PM

1.548784 miles

What's_nitro? 12.26.2008 11:22 PM

I'll guess something like ~5 miles, maybe a bit less. Assuming you figure out where the peak efficiency lies between speed/power consumption and travel at that constant speed.

sikeston34m 12.26.2008 11:25 PM

OK, BEFORE I gather the information, I would also like to post an educated guess.

This setup gives about 25 minutes of pretty hard running.

30 mph is 1 mile every 2 minutes. I know 30mph won't be the average speed.

I'm thinking the total miles per charge will be right at 8 miles.

Yes, and avoid those "Blast-out-of-the-hole" take offs that create those amperage spikes.

I probably should take the truck down to the park for this one. LOL

What's_nitro? 12.26.2008 11:29 PM

Wheeeellliee tiimeeee!!!!

sikeston34m 12.26.2008 11:29 PM

Ok, so far we have:

Sikeston34m - 8 miles

Metallover - 1.6 miles

Trev3813 - 1.548784 miles

What's_Nitro - 5 miles

Metallover 12.26.2008 11:34 PM

Oh man! You guys have no chance!!! Sike and Nitro are going to be over.:na: And it's not going to be in between 1.54748932730523745 and 1.6!!! So that means I got this in the bag!!

:na:

What's_nitro? 12.26.2008 11:39 PM

Them is fightin' wordz!!!! :grrrrrr:

What's_nitro? 12.26.2008 11:55 PM

And actually, I could be wayyyy under. I just did some hypothesizing.

Average voltage under load (30mph): 13.5V. (12+15/2)
Average power consumption under load: 200W. (?)
Average current draw under load: 14.815A.
Total runtime at average current draw: 20.25 Minutes.
Distance traveled during total runtime: 10.125 Miles.

What say you?

Metallover 12.27.2008 12:03 AM

I did some thinking too

5000mah - (5 minutes ^ sikes motor) / the speed of light = exactly 1.6 miles

asheck 12.27.2008 12:14 AM

With my Medusa 2000,MMM,geared 24/58 in an Erevo it takes around 1000-1300mah,of my 4000mah 6s 25c hecell lipos,to go 1.42 miles.Thats doing nothing but speed runs. With speeds of 55+

trev3813 12.27.2008 12:18 AM

Ha, im gonna win with 1.548784 I just know

lincpimp 12.27.2008 12:31 AM

I am also thinking around 10 miles, maybe slightly less. Definately more than 5 miles. I ran my slayer around for 45 mins one day, and walked over 1 mile while doing that. And the tuck made at lest 50 high speed passes on a 1/4 mile stretch, and that was only 5mins or so. The avg mph would be nice, but it must be at least 20mph, so 30min run would be 10 miles...

Is that the Medusa heat sink? It looks like a good one and I'm sure it really helps keep the motor temps in check.

I'm using a Novak heat sink. The Black Bulky type, but it really works good. I run the whole charge out on 4S and I can barely detect any heat with my fingers. Just a tad warmer on 5S with 40 to 50 degree temps outside. The Fan on the Monster isn't even coming on.

Your gearing is a 2.83 pinion/spur ratio. Where mine is a 2.88 ratio. Cool.

Sikeston34m - 8 miles

Metallover - 1.6 miles

Trev3813 - 1.548784 miles

Lincpimp - 10 miles

FG101C 12.27.2008 01:51 AM

I'm game, say...7 miles.

E-Revonut 12.27.2008 03:12 AM

Too many variables!!! What's the vehicle in question, motor, gearing, driving style, etc. In my Losi mini late model I cover aprox 1 mile in a 4 min race (46'x32' carpet track I believe and considering we don't cover the full distance I would est. 1 lap at 100') averaging 53-54 laps in 4 minutes with a lousy setup. When I run my MA 1550mah 2s I put about 570mah back into the pack. So I would estimate mower consumtion to be 550mah/mile. This is using a Mamba25/5400kv, 60/17 gearing, and stock tires. I have struggled with the handling of the car since changing shocks and I'm constantly on and off the throttle at every corner.

Hehe... OK! I'll go with 9.87654321 miles. :na:

Unsullied_Spy 12.27.2008 03:42 AM

I agree that it all depends on the vehicle. In my Muggy with the 80mm MedUsa, 24T pinion, 40 series tires, and going WOT through grass it'll flatten those 5ks in about 3 minutes and probably only go a few hundred yards. My E-Revo with a Neu 1515 1.5D and Maxamps 8k lipos went 45 minutes one time...that's the longest it ever lasted without breaking something.

If this is in your E-Revo, I'll go down for 15 miles of fairly mild driving

q8-maxx 12.27.2008 08:28 AM

I say 10 miles at 10 mph speed

mohanjude 12.27.2008 08:53 AM

OK I realise this is a 4s thread but my 6s setup - TP 5000 on a Losi 8 truggy with a Lehner 1950/6 and MMM gives approximately 16 minutes run time. Max speed is 46 mph - distance covered average 11 miles. I am trying to work out 0-60 -> it is ridiculously fast acceleration (easily overtook a guy on 500cc motorbike) from standstill. I checked this out with a Garmin etrex GPS.

So depending on driving style about 11 miles is easy.

asheck 12.27.2008 09:42 AM

I'll bet with my setup on 4s,8000's,I could go over 20 miles,12 with my 5000's if I was trying for distance.

Yep it's the Medusa. It's by far the best HS I have.I really don't need it right now,but in the middle of summer it got up to 165 once,so I figured throw it on there. I really like 24/68 for 6s,which just breaks 50,but on 4s it's under 40.I'll probably end up with around 24/62 gearing.

sjcrss 12.27.2008 09:53 AM

im in too, i guess 11-12 miles

Results are IN! :yipi:

This is VERY interesting!

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...m/DSC07254.jpg

This run was a combination of grass running and asphalt. I did do a few top speed runs before I settled back into lazy 15 - 20 mph passes. I did bring it in to check it quite often as seen in the "stopped" time of 3:57

This makes total runtime of 31 minutes.

Top Speed of 37.6 mph

I believe one of my next purchases will be a data logger. I wish I had that sort of data to combine with this. It would be sweet to compare motor data along with battery data.

I have the batteries on my MRC Superbrain charger now. I will report back with how many Mah it took to complete this run.

@What's_Nitro - You should have maintained your original guess at 5 miles. LOL

FG101C - You are the Winner with a guess of 7 miles! :yipi:

The truck traveled 5.8 miles on a charge!

Metallover 12.27.2008 04:15 PM

:diablo:WHAT!!!

That guy was OVER!!!:whip: This is like the price is right,, if you're over yur out man!! I SHOULD HAVE WON!!

:lol:jk,,, That's a pretty nice GPS you have. I suppose it's another contest with the data logger.:oh: You should take the GPS and see how far you can go on one charge at a constant speed following it in a truck and.....

That's interesting..

Congrats FG101C.

sikeston34m 12.27.2008 04:27 PM

Well here's another interesting tidbit of information.

I do believe my Lipo's have seen better days.

After many bashing sessions and alot of abuse, they have given me ALOT of fun.

I had the MMM set to auto-lipo. After the run, 4S voltage was at 13.98. (6.99 volts per side)

The Superbrain just returned 4000mah to charge them back up.

It's just about time for some new Batteries.

This means 690mah per mile. At this rate, 8000mah would yield 11.6 miles!

:oh:

Takedown 12.27.2008 10:07 PM

Ill take a gander at 2.1 miles.

A little late but nice try Takedown. I got here late also. Wouldn't of won anyways. I was going for One Dollar Bob! I guess that's old school. One Dolllar Drew!

I don't know if you "go for walks" with your rc, but I bet you would get a lot more miles out on a charge. Not trying to make a point just thinking through the keyboard. When I am out walking the dogs I run it a lot differently then when just bashing around the neighborhood. Sometimes you stop it and walk up to it or keep turning it around and bringing it back. Try and climb a bank just odd stuff. I am curious now how far a walk is on a charge. It sure seems like a hell of long ways when it breaks down and you have to carry it back. Another reason to look into getting a gps.

Tempted 12.31.2008 01:45 AM

I was gonna say π² but I'm too late.
