My Maxx Kicks Your Maxx's Ass Build

This is my 3906 E-Maxx build. It is based off the stock 3906 chassis, with a Medusa 36-80 Afterburner v2 2200Kv motor. That motor is about as overkill as it gets for a stock chassis based 3906, which is exactly why this build is called the "My Maxx Kicks Your Maxx's Ass" Build.

Since my Maxx already has tons of upgrade parts, I will start the build with some pictures and a description of my Maxx in its stock form, and then go down the timeline with the upgrades, until I get to it's current form and I will update from there.

So enjoy the build!

Disclaimer about the title...:whistle:
~~~Yes I know the title of this build is totally not true, as there are trucks in the G-Maxx thread that are some of the most amazing Maxx's I have ever seen, but it sounded cool and gets peoples attention! :na:~~~
(I will have pics up of the very first upgrades that my Maxx ever received in just a bit.)
Takedown 01.06.2009 08:49 PM
Looking forward to pics!
suicideneil 01.06.2009 08:50 PM
Red rag to a bull, is that title, but its gets peoples attention for the wrong reasons really- nothing wrong with titling the thread 'my maxx- before and after' etc etc.
Im affraid we'll have to cut off one of your fingers if it doesnt turn out half decent by our standards... :yes: :wink:
Depends on what your standards are. :lol:
Pics coming soon, have to find all of them.
_paralyzed_ 01.06.2009 08:55 PM
My dad can beat up your dad.
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:00 PM
It started like this, 100% stock with Tekno RC wingmount added
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...wlin/Maxx1.jpg
Then it got a custom skidplate, the very first custom part for it and the very first "upgrade" for it.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...in/Maxx2-1.jpg
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:02 PM
The next treatment was some custom "dual rate" springs
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...in/Maxx3-1.jpg
Then it got a "scale" touch, a hitch bumper made with extra parts from a Tamiya Clodbuster kit.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...wlin/Maxx7.jpg
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:03 PM
My next and first true durability upgrade was GH Racing aluminum bulkheads and front, center, and rear CVD's
"my mom can out-bitch your mom" sadly, it's probably true... and my maxx (T!) will smoke urs right now...65mph in 2.2seconds...
BL_RV0 01.06.2009 09:05 PM
"Your maxx is my maxxes ass in the grass cuz its so damn fast, then you came in last!"
I challenge that play...
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:09 PM
Then I thought my servo was a bit unprotected, so I got an aluminum cover for it.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...wlin/Maxx8.jpg
Then my steering components seemed a bit weak, so I upgraded my steering to a GH Racing full aluminum steering setup.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...lin/Maxx10.jpg
Then on to some chassis rigidity upgrades.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...lin/Maxx11.jpg
Next on the bill was the shocks, replaced with Traxxas Big Bores.
pedeboi364 01.06.2009 09:16 PM
lol, just had to be the nitro bitch here...nice looking maxx, i take it u did this all b4 the new one came out?
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:17 PM
Then it stayed in about that form for a while, but I wasn't getting great performance out of the stock tires, so I bought some white 40 series Wabash wheels and Proline Crimefighters, and dyed the wheels black. (I would like to thank the user "jordan..." for the idea of dying the wabash wheels black. I saw that he did that with his in his G-Maxx thread and I thought it looked so good I had to try it as well.)
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...CN15700017.jpg
Then I got a new body, a Proline HardDrive for the Maxx, and an OFNA Hi-Downforce wing (black).
Do ya wanna hear something unpleasant? From what I've read in various places, GH parts arent much better than integy with regards to durability. Whether thats true for all users or just hardcore jumpers/bashers who abuse their trucks remains to be seen. Sure looks alot like integy stuff if nothing else- which finger are you least fond of Krawlin?... :whistle:
No, actually I bought the Maxx in September of 07 before the new Maxx came out, and I hardly ran it and it stayed totally stock until the middle of May of 2008, which is when I started upgrading it.
We posted at the same time, have a look at the bottom of page 1 again for more pics incase you didn't see them.
And the GH parts held up quite well for me, I still use their shock towers, center braces, and aluminum steering setup. (Still have their bulks in the front of my Maxx because I haven't gotten around to putting the FLM hybrids in the front yet, but that will come soon, just wait for the pics.)
And I would rather keep all of my fingers if you dont mind...
More pics coming up in just a few minutes.
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:27 PM
And then I finally made the switch to brushless after being pestered by Ryan and Ben for so long....
I purchased an Align 600XL, and took the MM out of my XXX-T, and bought 2 SPC Racing Ener-G 4600 NiMH Matched Maxx Packs.
Also shown in these pictures are the OFNA Ultra LX One shocks and the GH Racing shock towers.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...wlin/Maxx2.jpg
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...wlin/Maxx3.jpg
And yes I know I had pre-load clips on those shocks, that was only until I realized they looked like crap and didn't make the truck have a stiffer suspension feel. I have yet to buy stiffer springs for it.
Getting better. I want to see that damn huge motor now!
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:29 PM
And here is a video of it on 12 cells NiMH with the Align 600XL. Also shown in this video was this trucks first run with RPM Arms. And forgive my horrible driving in that video, I was attempting to do a front flip and land it but had no such luck.
Just hold on a bit, I am getting there! And I need to take a pic of it too, I will do that in a bit.
BL_RV0 01.06.2009 09:46 PM
Well I guess your title worked- you have 9 people viewing your thread!
Krawlin 01.06.2009 09:54 PM
So anyway, after about 15 runs or so on that Align 600XL, it died a very smokey death. First time running it on 4S LiPo, about 7 minutes into the run and the Maxx coasted after a full throttle pass and wouldn't respond to throttle or brake input, took the body off and smoke was rolling out of the vents on the motor. Based on what alot of people told me, it was probably a short in the windings. But it got hot enough to make the motor pretty much loose all of its magnetic strength. And since its an inrunner/outrunner hybrid, it has "bar" type magnets that are spaced equally around in the inner rotating can, and appearently they came unbonded and now there a clumps of 2 and 3 of them together, not equally spaced. So after that 600XL fried, I took it out and did some work on the Maxx..... (pictures coming up.)
emaxx101 01.06.2009 09:57 PM
good looking truck. need to clean up some of those wires. im really liking that body and wing.
Krawlin 01.06.2009 10:03 PM
The next upgrade on the list was the tranny and diffs and new bulkheads. Since I stripped an idler in the tranny, I bought the RC-Monster hardened steel ones. However, I only used one, because I locked the tranny in second and turned it 180 degrees in the chassis so the spur would be facing forward. Then I purchased a G-Maxx single motor motor plate. Next up was the diffs and bulkheads. There were 2 problems here. 1st was that it had stock plastic diff cups and would spin the spider pin around inside the case and strip it and render it useless. Took care of that problem with FLM aluminum diff cups. But then a second problem came about, the ring and pinion gears were stripping. I realized that they were stripping due to having the stock plastic gear cases and diff case retainers. They were allowing the pinion and bearings to move and flex the case when load was applied, allowing the pinion to push out from the ring gear and strip the teeth. So I took care of that problem with FLM Hybrid bulks for the 3906 diffs. Now I somewhat regret not going with the hybrid bulks meant for buggy diffs, but oh well. Anyway, I currently have the rear FLM hybrid bulk installed, and have yet to install the front one. Now for some pics. Also pictured are the RPM arms. Something you may not be able to see in the picture are my custom wing mount braces and the 1/4'' wingmount setback I did with some aluminum spacers.
First some pictures of the Maxx posing with my crawler and buggy
Thanks, sadly I didn't much like that HardDrive body. And I used Krylon paint on it which peeled off, so there are tons of clear spots on the body, and I had to butcher it to get the back of it to clear that OFNA Hi-Downforce wing. I now have a new Proline 72 Chevy C-10 body painted Tamiya Metallic Black (and it sure looks good, cant find the pics, but I will keep looking for them) and it looks amazing with that OFNA wing.
bensf 01.06.2009 10:30 PM
You really should get shrink wrap on your plugs. Don't want them to short out. Real easy to do with a screwdriver.
Does look good too- very fond of the ofna wing in particular over most other designs, just wish I could make it fit my gmaxx towers somehow with a custom mount or something...
Well then I give some credit to you since I got the idea from you and some credit to the person who you got the idea from.:lol:
And thanks man, that means alot coming from you, especially considering how nice your G-Maxx is.
trev3813 01.06.2009 11:13 PM
Ey, nice maxx. I still like the look of my body better :mdr:
Gee 01.07.2009 02:06 AM
Nice maxx and good job on keeping us waiting for the next pictures instead of just dropping ten at a time. I like the progression you took us through. Brings back memories for a lot of us I am sure. The days of the plastic differential cups and small screw. Busting it down to get to them and finally taking the steps to never have to do it again. Thanks. Nice build.
TDC57 01.07.2009 03:01 AM
That was / is a great thread.. It took me back a few years and about 15 trucks ago.. Your defiantly on the right path..
I too like the rear wing setup you have!,, and a nice collection of builds too..
Keep up the great work..
BL Dreamer 01.07.2009 03:10 AM
The thread was fun. The vid had me laughing like I was watching bloopers, but I have to say it showed some def durabilty. I was thinking the whole time "I need to get one of these so my little nephews (5 of them) can bash it about. I havent even finished my 8ight build and Im afraid to let them drive it. I need a monster truck now....where does it all end....:lol:
Thanks! I took me a few times to figure out that I should have just bought aluminum diff cups though, I stripped 3 plastic cups in the rear and 1 in the front before I finally went with the aluminum ones. Hopefully I wont ever have anymore problems with the diffs though. Even if I do, those FLM hybrid cases will make it so much easier to get to the diffs.
Thanks! I still wish I could have it setting farther back, but I am afraid to use spacers any longer than 1/4'' and the current screws it has, as it would probably become weak. But those braces sure help alot. And I actually got the links for the wing mount braces off my crawler, they were used a chassis stiffeners, and the spacers for the 1/4'' wing mount setback were also the shock standoffs/spacers from the crawler.
Yeah, Ryan talked me into those. But I sort of like them, they go well with the motor and my other blue aluminum.
