ESC/Motor for crawler
My son wants to have a crawler for his 9th birthday so I'm thinking of buying the Axial AX 10 ARTR kit. My problem is choosing which ESC/motor to buy for it.
I had narrowed down my choices between these but any input or recommendation is very much appreciated. For a good low cost setup, get a sidewinder esc and a integy 55t motor. Should cost about 90 bucks new, or cheaper if you find a good deal on the esc. The motors are 20 bucks, and last while...

Both escs are great, I like the FX-R because of it size I have one in my scaler. I am a Castle guy by heart and the sidewinder is a great esc as well. The crawler kit you asked about is a Berg and it has great axles the rest of the kit is ok, but any kit is like that. I run Berg axles on my 2.2 comp rig and I can say that the axles are tuff as hell. I have not broke anything yet and I have been running my axles hard for about 8 months. As for a motors Holmes Hobbies has the best hand wound brushed motors on the market. IMO

Thanks for the input guys. I'll be ordering sidewinder and integy motor today. I'll be running it on 2S so I will also be installing a Dimension Engineering Sport BEC on it.

Might want to go to a 45 or 35 turn motor for 2s usage, 55t might be a bit slow...

Why???
Why do you think we got rollerskates???:yipi: I lived in the Philli projects from 1age 10 to 17, and life was tough:diablo:. I was lucky to have a good pair of sneakers, a bike, and a basketball to my name:party:. Back then I was the neighborhood bike repair kid:yes:. Everyone brought there cycles to me when they had a flat or broken chain, or whatever. That was how I started my mechanical career, and made money for snacks. No ancient creatures though.:oh: I am not that freaken old you monkey baller.

Thanks Jerry. I told him how fortunate he is for having almost everything he wanted. As long as he's doing his house chores and keeps on getting good grades in school, I don't mind spending my money for his toys. Hey at least I can play with it too. In fact, my wife asked me if he really wanted a new truck or was it for me :intello::lol::rofl:.
James, what would be the top speed with the 55T on 2S? |
Well, my buds run 55t motors on 3s lipo, and with 2.2 tires and axial trannys geared 14/87 they get about 5mph out of them. I prefer a bit of wheel speed as I think it can be an asset when crawling. A 55t motor has a kv of about 1100, so the speed calc may be useful. On 2s figure 3.5mph with stock gearing on an ax10.

You can try outrunner around 1000kv, something similar to Crawlmaster by HH.

I use 2100mah lipos in my 2.2 comp rig and it does at least 35-45mins. And that is with a big outrunner. With the low gearing and speeds crawlers are setup for they barely draw anything. |
1.5 hours!!!!! That's nice. He can crawl his truck to boredom while I'm busy running around the track :party:. I'm going to keep this truck as stock as it can be until he starts breaking axles or lockers. I saw some broken aluminum lockers over at RC4WD.

My buddy Zach bought the axial artr and he has ALOT of time on it, and has not had any tranny or diff issues. He did put the mip cvds in the front, but only cause he wanted a bit more steering throw. Axial axles are sturdy, and if you think your son will beat it real hard you may want to put the optional axial slipper clutch on the tranny.
Zach also runs the 55t/sidewinder in his ax10 so it is a proven setup to me. He really likes it, excellent low speed control and plenty of wheel speed. He runs 14/87 gearing (stock axial) and it is very capable. I run a cheapo outrunner in my gatekeeper knock off with axial axles and a sidewinder. Cost me 12 bucks, but I do have to run 32p gearing as the motor has a 5mm shaft. 833kv with 16/54 gearing on 3s is about the same as the 55t on 3s lipo, speedwise. Depending on the servo you plan to run you may need to run a ubec with 3s lipo. I use a jr 9000t and is pulls some juice, a 645 hitec or similar would be fine with the internal bec... With the internal bec and that jr servo the spectrum rx would turn off when the servo hit its endpoint... |
Thanks James. I'll be using a Hitec 5955TG and a Dimension Engineering Sports Bec. I'll setup the output voltage of the ubec to 6V.

Edit-What size are the wires on the sidewinder? Does it come with any connectors? |
