HFX / BrimStone
...one day I should just learn to leave it alone...
|
nice......
|
Very nice indeed, I have yet to see one of those. What is your power plant?
|
Is that... A TVP truggy??!! :surprised:
|
...more later but basically it is Savage front and rears with HF shocks mounted to HF towers mounted to Savage bulkheads...REALLY easy once I saw where the holes lay...Rear tower is BACKWARDS so the countersunk screws can mount the wing with the nut INSIDE the wing mount...
...HF center diff with an overhead motormount gripping a Medusa 36-69 2200...Batteries are nothing special right now; lipo to be purchased 'eventually'... ...MMM to run it, no battery / servo box and the steering servo mounted inside the right side TVP... ...Yeah i needed something 'special' to showcase a new GCM savage chassis about to be released ;) |
Pretty sweet man. I had never heard of HFX and/or Brimstone before, so I thought it was a completely new truck!
|
Excellent work! What is the wheelbase on the chassis that is about to be released? (assuming it's not the one shown in the pictures) You MUST let us know how those Hellfire shock towers and shocks perform on there, I am greatly interested in seeing some close-ups.
Also, are those Integy rear uprights? |
...thanks fellas...I am stoked to be finally able to bring something to the table that is as inspiring as the things I have picked up from here...
...The chassis that is being made is an extended bolt-on for the Flux...The maker, Generis, has earned quite the following for his E-savage stuff and is taking the dive up the big leagues with his POTENT MT geometry...the extension will be between an inch and 40mm.. ...the plates you see pictured are actually TWO right side GP Savage plates I picked up out of the trash at the local track :D Stock lengths, stock angles...Luckily i got two of them so you get that sexy symmetry going on... ...The HF shocks I was using on my E-sav for ages (with MT2 FRONT towers on stock E-Sav bulkheads) and they are great...I love them...LST never interested me because I am a weight weenie at heart and dont really like to add bulk...I never really understood the 8-shock theory anyway :D the shocks themselves though and strong and smoth...Set and forget...They dont leak or squeak or do anything they arent supposed to...FYI yellow springs and 35 weight oil...pistons are 'normal'... ...Close ups I can do for you no problems... ...Ahem...Yes they are Integy uprights...As has been mentioned elsewhere, they are typical Integy POS...One went straight on...One took THREE hours to get a bearing into LOL...one smashed up bearing, (later removed and replaced) and a beat up 'bearing' tool later it was finally in there though...I had to laugh because the Integy logo on the one that took ages to do was lasered on upside down :D But i really wanted to use these because they gave me ZERO toe-in (or thereabouts) and they meant that i didnt need the rear turnbuckle, which i can no longer fit on anyway because the shock tower uses the turnbuckle holes...I guess all that will be revealed in some better closeup shots... ...i reckon every good build needs a name and Brimstone was what I was calling my straight brushless Hellfire conversion...That never really worked out the way I wanted it to and never went very far...That build is in my signature and has pics of the motormount I am using now...HFX stands for Hellfire X (Savage)...Admittedly HFX sounds more like a new Kyosho platform than HPI but i like it... |

really nice truck so far :)
Thanks fro teh heads up on the uprights too. Eventually I'd like to get some to get rid of the rear toe, but the HPI's are so expensive. I was hoping the integy were not crap but... |
Does New Era make anything that would work?

...I love this truck...The HFX is up and running...I am really happy with it...I dont know if its running more like a Savage or a Hellfire... ...it jumps VERY flat and straight and controllable...Shocks could go a tiny little bit harder...Diffs are X factory grease and diff action is pretty much spot on right now...The HF center functions flawlessly and powerfully...Medusa 3560-2200 is spot on and is staying cool, though admittedly i will have to start to play with the gearing soon...its ESavage 66 spur on a HF center diff... ...Batteries are reasonably far forward and the front stays down though that COULD be due to crappy batteries...But even at full charge it just squatted briefly and then popped back up four on the floor... ...The function of the wing is debatable and it might come off for the weight factor...Looks so cool though... ...I traction rolled it once on pavement last night, well actually at 1am this morning, but it seems to prefer to pop up on three wheels and haul itself around a corner...Will have to change the rear a little bit so it slides a bit more... ..its 4.6kg RTR with 12 nimh and Warlock rims...Will change to kyosho 10 spoke after the next pay day...Tires are TBC but will PROBABLY stay with dirtbonz...need to check the weights today... ...mate if EVER there was a need for lipo its now :D I will sell off a whole bunch of stuff and invest in some...Again, advise will be needed... ...I reckon i can get it down to 4kg, or maybe even a hair UNDER with lipo and kyoshos...Body is TBC because I want to see what length Generis shows up with first...Not having the stock body mounts mean i am VERY on the edge of not having a body that will fit...I wanted to fit the stock (shape) Savage body but wiring could be an issue under the rear bed... ...Still looking forward to trying it with the esav center and jedi mount...Still VERY anxious to keep the motor in midship as opposed to off to one side... ...I am thinking the Aggressors might be a better choice on lipo than the dirtbonz...hmm...glad i had that thought... ...imagine that...A 4kg Savage :D RE: the rear uprights...Atomic does some in gunmetal that are quite square...They look ok and are similar in price depending on where you get them from... ...I can get the 'parts' seperately from the upgrade kit...I might fit the upright braces that lower the upper arm...If anybody would 'like' parts from the set LMK and I will look into it... |
...it had started to snow / rain...usually i dont go out in the wet but it was either that or wait days again until everything dried out...So we got a bit muddy...its not the mud that worries me...its the angry wife cleaning up the trail of crap that worries me :o ...4900 4S lipo...ok...i switched to lipo finally...and am very happy...lighter faster stronger...The friggin Bionic Man of RC...Great stuff...not TOTALLY enthused about the mounts but they work, stay cool and are 98% secure...Slight slippage in one... Homework: Totally encase the packs, get rid of the unsightly velcro... ...Hellfire center diff...At WOT the front would pop up slightly and the front would balloon...Other than that the system worked FLAWLESSLY and was begging for more...Punch was set at 50% and I will probably change that to 60 or 70 next time out...Very easy to control the wheelies and the difference in speed with the front DOWN was impressive...It didnt wheelie much at all... ...the spur is actually a stock esav 60 with a 20t pinion drilled to 5mm...I wasnt totally excited about running 32 pitch but it worked for starters... ...After about 10 minutes of dirty fun the pinion screw left the building, i lost mesh and the pinion snacked on the spur...Its all good... Homework: Kyosho spur to 46 M1 and a 16t pinion for the time being...Also will stiffen the fluid in the center once i have it out...Still going with plastic spur metal pinion for a while... ...DirtBonz...Hmm...the jury is still out...The sidewall is inherently soft so will fold and give you more chassis roll; hence causing the rear to catch a little more and not be so slidey...they do hookup on pretty much everything though...the Warlock rims are great, sit there and do their job... Homework: Switch to lighter Kyosho 10 spokes which COULD be asking for trouble...might grab some Aggressors and play with the tread a little; aiming for a more Badlands type of tire... |
Medusa 3660 - 2200...whats to say...Works great...stayed cool and just belted out the power...The wires coming out of the Medusa annoy me though...MMM is 10 gauge, batteries are 10 gauge...The Medusa wires look like something i would pick my teeth with...had to grind my own flat spot which is very ghetto but my own problem...more on that in another thread...
MMM...Again...Flawless...Set it up on the PC while Baby Bit was asleep and even Analog Mrs. it was impressed with that lol...Forward to brake to reverse and punch @ 50% were really the only points of interest...everything else was default...The plugs on the MMM annoy me but again, more in another thread... ...The integy rear uprights did the trick and hummed without issue...I flipped it, crashed it, nosedived it, cartwheeled it and smacked it into a tree and that chunk of concrete that i KNEW i should have moved before i started...A few anxious moments here and there but in true Savage fashion it just rolled over and kept on going...its the first time i have seen a NON-flying vehicle do a flat spin 2 meters in the air and it was nerve-wracking but no doubt it will happen again lol... ...Video camera was rolling but the position sucked so al the footage I have is really far away...I will play with it though and try to make SOMETHING of it... Homework: The HPI braces that lower the roll center and change the upper arms will be purchased today...Have to redo the center diff and the battery boxes...Generis chassis is being discussed and should be finalised very soon...Medusa 3100 is waiting in the wings and will need some run time...Gearing needs to be played with and some new pinions wil be ordered...Sticking with M1 for sure... ...At 4.4 kg and VERY fast the HFX is a success and will get LOTS of runtime as the weather gets drier...I just have to wait till the mud dries and can be brushed off but a few projects for it in the meantime... Thanks for reading...Peace... |
Only 4.4kg?!?! That's amazing. Well, mine with bigger shocks, heavier batts, heavier motor, heavier shock towers, heavier (longer) chassis only weighs slightly more than 1kg more than yours .
Will be nice to watch your video footage, to see what your truck is capable of. |
March 5 Update
...3 days of rain scheduled :(
...truck is dry and has been brushed clean... ...Kyosho 10 spokes are in and will get the Dirtbonz soon... ...HPI Upper Arm Braces are in, (from the conversion set) and have been deannodized but are a little more involved than was previously thought...they look and work really well though...its weird not seeing that big bulky arm on there... ...Working on the video that i HAVE...Its not great and its all far away but it will give you a little idea of the madness :D ...Thanks for following this MetalMan...Seems like you and me are the only ones in on it ;) |
Hey Bit, so you got the upper arm adapter to lower the roll center?? That was fast... you just mentioned the other day that you were thinking about it hahah... But the "big bulky arm".... arent we talking about the upper arm here? That thing is skinny!

...thanks Gdot...Speechless in the sense that they are overawed with my brilliance i hope :D Mindyou its just 'another' build of which there are many so its all good...
...Its all relative Joey ;) the stock arm is forked but now its just two chunky ends and the tierod from the hpi adjustable arms...i think i have one savage end and one hellfire end on each piece...LOOKS fantastic..Probabaly not much of a weight saving... ...pics later when i can get some decent ones but i needed to add 5mm of 3m spacers to the screw that holds the upper arm and I had to fab some 17mm long 4mm spacers to fit on the stock upper pin...As i dont use Savage X towers i lose the little plastic piece of the tower that pin slides into... ...Also added another screw to secure the tower to the bulhead...I need pics i know... |
What you have done is very impressive. I really should do some weight reduction on my racer but I'll leave it for another day.
|
...a wet weekend, a toothbrush and a drill and its starts looking FACTORY!!!
|
The upper arm brackets got de-nuded and went in very well after fabbing some brackets and other little doo-dahs...
...Here is the front... ...and the rear...I didnt put in the 5mm spacers for the top screw to the bulkhead...in fact i left out that screw completely until i can get some more 4x50's... |
...i was using a modded e-sav motorplate on the CD but as a shout out to the boys at Medusa I modded a Tamiya CR-01 motorplate, from 3Racing, which matched the blue and was able to be keyed to the diff carrier with 4 screws instead of 2...I was all out out blue nuts so i chucked on some wanky titanium ones I had lying around...
...In the final 2 shots BOTH motor plates are on...Just though I would leave on the purkle one just in case... ...sorry my album is being a prick and all these shots are sideways... ...From THIS... http://e-savage.com/gallery/data/513.../CD_PURKLE.jpg ...To THIS... http://e-savage.com/gallery/data/513/medium/CD_BLUE.jpg http://e-savage.com/gallery/data/513/medium/CD_3.jpg http://e-savage.com/gallery/data/513/medium/CD_4.jpg |
Very nice rig! Can you maybe go into some detail on mounting a hellfire diff? SOme shots of it installed? Debating on this mod or the kershaw unit, right now im using a stock 2sp locked tranny but wish HPI would design a better working slipper cause the wheelies are a pain.
|
...getting sick of JUST pictures yet? Well i sure am...Getting closer to video though as the truck is now pretty much dialed in...Just a few little things to do to it but its 100% running...
...4.4 kg RTR...medusa 36-60 2200...Kyosho 46 spur / nameless 16 pinion (Mod 1)...HPI DirtBonz on Kyosho 10 spokes...HF shox, center diff, towers and wing / wing mount...4S 4900 lipo... |
...look at how low and slick this thing is...Drives GREAT!!
...If you CAN, get the upper arm brackets for the Savage...TOTALLY different ride and quite possibly the BIGGEST handling mod you can do...Cheap too... ...Last night out in the dark and the cold on half-power packs it drove great...Almost zero wheelies...A little mod to the front prevented pizza-cutters too...I did wheelie it once, on command, and it went for quite a few meters on the wing :D ...Steering was VERY touchy due to the lowered roll center and had to turn it down...I was worried the wider front hexs would affect steering circle but it didnt at all... ...The new battery boxes are FANTASTIC and dont miss a beat...Got rid of the awful velcro too... ...it was friggin cold but not a peep from the batteries, motor or MMM...Schweet...Gearing needs to go with a 14 pinion too, just to slow it down a little and make it slightly more bashable... ...I will most likely pass on the alloy body and go straight to the new Proline Streamline body...its the first time EVER that i have seen the need for a low-profile, aerodynamic body on an RC...but as it will hardly traction roll now it should last a while... ...The bumpers still annoy me and I havent come up with a decent solution yet... ...New chassis should be here soona nd then its just down to sinking all the screws and mounting it all up again... |
That's a nice build, I have been one of the quiet followers. I got a couple questions. Did you have to drill anything to get the towers on? or use stock holes? and , Have you considered using the hellfire arms on this beast?
|
...thanks for the post Crazy :D
...I hadnt thought about the HF arm until you mentioned it but i will have a look at it...Sounds easy... ...one of the lower holes on the HF tower matches the tierod hole on the Savage bulk...I made the 3mm hole a 4mm hole and just put a bolt through... ...The UPPER pins protude a little bit which means this lower bolt that i put through needs about 4mm of spacers so the tower fits flush...Easier to see with pics that i will have to put up...Really very easy though once you see it :D ...Other than that i just drilled those two new holes in the tower to screw it to the bulkhead at the top...Check out the labelled pictures...You can see the 4x50 bolt i put in... |
I was just thinking the hellfire never got off to a good start in the truggy side of things, but figured the improvements in geomentry might help the savage
edit, Upon a second look you might not be able to do the HF arms, your towers are really low. maybe the hot bodies arms will work, they are low/wide mount like the savage setup you have now |
...would be wider for sure...cvd's though which could be cool...more castor on the front too, which incidentally HPI puts into the savage Suspension conversion set anyway...could be worth a look...
...might make it TOO wide for what i want though...but would give me an excuse to sell all the Hellfire parts i have :D |
Ncie ride and build.
Video coming soon? |
...thanks CoolHand...yup jusy got figure out how to charge the lipo without blowing myself up and we are good to go...its stopped raining too which is always helpful :D

Wow, we do almost have twins! Hurry up and post video!
|
..batteries are charged...rain will hold off for another 24 hours...run out of CA so i cant get my tires on yet...New 'Sexy Magic' chassis is in the mail and flying over the Pacific :D New motorplate design is on the worktable and needs some love...Almost there...
pb4ugo :D Glad you figured out what i meant :D Thanks for posting...So you can understand my interest in your chassis design... |
you have all my respect for the building! nicely done no question bout that.
however if you're target is a "racing machine" why not go with a truggy to begin with? don't get me wrong i fully understand that "modifying" a truck is half the fun of the hobby. but one can modify a monster truck so that it is still monster truck. its somehow amazing that since the truggies entered the rc scene in 2005 or so a strange trend of monster conversions has set in. before that monsters were just monsters and buggies were buggies. different cars for different purposes. but yeah to each his own. i am just watching this trend and never really understood it. but i guess i don't have to .... bye rhylsadar |
...well that definately let the air out of the inflatable wife THAT one...I understand what you are saying though Rhylsadar; why bother going to all that trouble with a Savage when i could have just gone with a truggy...
...A: I tried the Hellfire a while back and could never quite get to grips with it...Its in the truggy section here... ...B: I wanted to use the hellfire center diff and shocks because thats what i had...no other reason...The reason i figured out how to use the HF towers was pure chance...i really wanted to use them as best they COULD be used... ...C: i never really liked the high cg on the savage... ...D: My target has never been a 'racing machine' so im not sure where you got that from...low, nimble, STRONG and fast were the project goals...All have been achieved...btw i drive like CRAP which is why its needs to be bulletproof lol... ...I MUCH prefer this truck to the Svage OR the Hellfire...Its like i have the best of both vehicles all packed into one...I appreciate your praise on the build aspect of it though...Most unlike me to have it end up looking this good lol... |
march 16 UpDate
...the weather was great...the sun was warm and high in the sky...The pregnant sister in law was coming over and the permission had been granted...The batteries were fresh, the tires were glued and the new motorplate was ready to go...
...It all turned to poo when in the the space of 30 seconds, 2-year old BabyBit took the driveshafts and hid them in the BlackHole that only small children have access to :( I searched ALL day and watched miserably as the sun went down on the Perfect Sunday...Even Mrs. Bit felt sorry for me as she knows this truck is a little bit different to everything else in the past...it was a LONG, LONELY Sunday... ...The night before was a busy night... ...As seen on ALL the best trucks in the past, i decided to make the motorplate the chassis brace... ...MetalMan has done it, Hjena has done it and Serum has done it...It makes the most sense and though adding a little bit of weight, tightly secures the motor AND the diff reducing flex and adding direct power... ...Introducing, possibly THE ugliest piece of metal work you may EVER see, The HFX BrimStone motorplate... ...photographed in the dark as it scares small children and makes the world a sadder place :D |
