Radio for crawler ?

Im considering getting a crawler & have a couple of ?'s about radios . Can i use my m8 or is a stick radio better ?. I would'nt be entering comps or anything . The crawler im looking at does'nt have dig. So i would'nt need extra channels as of yet . I dont want to have to get another radio in case i dont like crawling . My m8 has a auxillary channel . could i us that for the dig unit if i get one latter ?.

lincpimp 02.16.2009 01:12 AM

I run mine with an m8, no reason not to use a wheel radio. Super class crawlers with dual motor on axle (MOA) setups and 4 wheel steering (4WS) use stick radios due to their channel mixing capabilities (CMC).

So have fun, and use whatever you have (WYH). Dig is not really necessary unless you plan to compete, and you can use the m8 3rd cannel to control it.

The last two of those quoted letters were pure BS, BTW.

Thank's for your repliy . What is dig used for anyway ?.

I use both a dx6 and a dx3r...

The dx6 allows for 4ws and independent front and rear drive.

The dx3r is in the ax10 with dig - this allows for locked running, free rear (for some climbing situations when rear will drive will cause you to flip), locked rear (allows a tight turning radius as front pulls reara around)

So dig locks the rear wheels so they drag instead of spin ?.

A 3 position can lock the wheels so that they drag, let them freewheel, and have normal 4wd. Some older digs were 2 position that did not have freewheel and were used primarily for tighter turning. Freewheel is good for some climbing when the axle is trying to drive under an obstacle, and for running down steep slopes.

How does the dig frewheel ?.

TexasSP 02.16.2009 10:23 AM

Take a look at rc4wd as they have some crawler specific controllers coming out. I think a lot of people will be snatching those up.

The third position effectively disconnects the rear drive internally.

I found this dig unit . It's a little pricey. https://rcpcrawlers.com/product.php?productid=1136

TexasSP 02.16.2009 01:29 PM

It's a top notch dig unit though. Check out rccrawler.com in the marketplace and you can find used ones in there a lot.

Here is this one for 43.00, I can vouch for RPP, the are top notch!

Im considering trading for this crawler from skellyo . He said i would have to make a very slight mod for the dig to fit . But that it is very easy to do .

That's a nice crawler, I would go for it.

Im thinking about it . The good thing about this crawler is i know sean takes care of his stuff .

Arct1k 02.16.2009 07:31 PM

looks nice... i picked up a HR dig for ax10 - works pretty well

rchippie 02.17.2009 10:33 PM

I just traded skellyo for his crawler . I will be picking it up friday or saturday . It has a brushed integy 45t motor know . But i think i would like to go brushless from the start . What is a good BL crawler motor for a beginner ?. I will be using a MM esc & FP 3s 1600 lipo's . Also should i use a externale bec or is the bec in the MM good enough ?. This is know mine .

Arct1k 02.17.2009 10:39 PM

check out holmeshobbies - he has specific crawler brushless motors...

yes you need a ubec - the mm can't cope with a 5955/7955 in a crawler.

I know nothing about crawler motors . what model would you suggest ?.

skellyo 02.17.2009 10:44 PM

Use the external BEC since they're 3S Lipos.

The only one I've ever used was an Axi 2217/16. I was quite happy with it though. It's just not as affordable as a lot of other options.

were can i see them ?. Never mind i just found them . That to much money for me LOL. I guess i'll have to wait for JH to chime in here or untill spmeone else recomends a less expensive option . What ever motor i get . Has to be able to work using a MM esc .

Arct1k 02.17.2009 11:28 PM

Ask holmes himself - he's on here all the time or is on the phone - great guy to chat with like mike...

Thank's .

Do most guys use reverse in a crawler ?.

also for those using a MM in a crawler . What settings are good starting points ?.

johnrobholmes 02.18.2009 02:33 PM

We use reverse a lot, unless you are in a comp setting.

I like the crawlmaster and the revolver motors. They work well with the MM.

I would suggest no punch control, max startup power, full reverse, full brakes, and 100% drag brake. The timing doesn't really make a difference for me, but maybe you will notice something.

Hi John i was waiting for you repliy  . would those setting work with a brushed motor ?. Your crawlmaster motor motor was recomended to me . Im thinking about getting one . Im just not sure if i want to try the integy first or just get your motor . I will also be using 3s lipo, if that makes a difference in settings .

Do i want to use the Foward- brake reverse setting or the foward with reverse lockout setting ?.

skellyo 02.18.2009 03:04 PM

You want forward to reverse...no lockout.

rchippie 02.18.2009 03:07 PM

What wiring to the motor should i use for a brushed motor . There is the high power way were all 3 motor wires go to the negitive . Then there is the way with just two wires red & black to the negitive & positive plugs on the motor, no white wire is used ?.

johnrobholmes 02.18.2009 03:09 PM

You want reversing brushed mode, use the red and black wires for the brushed motor.

Otherwise the settings are all the same.

Thank you john . I think i may try the brushed motor first . Then if i like crawling i will buy one of your crawlmaster sport motors .

johnrobholmes 02.18.2009 03:21 PM

Brushed motors are great with awesome low speed control. Brushless outrunner motors have a higher power to weight ratio since they can pass higher currents.

Thank you for your help . Im starting to get a little excited about this .

Crawlers are hella fun. Give me one emaxx, one stampede, and twenty crawlers and I am happy :D Thinking about ditching the emaxx for a Savage Flux though.

SKELLYO just got a savage flux .

johnrobholmes 02.18.2009 06:19 PM

I am reaaaally close to it, especially since there are a few motors that I need more truck to properly test against.

rchippie 02.20.2009 09:44 PM

I got my crawler today . I installed my MM esc & novak reciver & koolflight bec .
every thing works good . http://skellyo.com/hippie/Crawler/
