4S MM 8L Brushless Rustler

Just starting this thread for the rustler roller I got from lincpimp recently, and its gonna be my truck for speed runs, bashing, and just general playing in the street.

So far this is my setup:
mod 1 gears from a revo (14/40 ratio)
Traxxas 2055 servo (stock emaxx)
Mamba Max with BEC disabled and 6.5mm bullets attached
Fiegao 8L Finned(well, not really anymore)
Protek 4s 20c 4000mAh lipo
Noname brand BEC from TrueRC
Spektrum SR3000 reciever
3 road rages and one road hawg for tires

yay pictures!

I had to eat a little bit out of my finned motor in order for it to fit in the tranny housing

And hopefully this little mod will save me lots of trouble... My upper chassis plate(the servo mount and bellcrank posts) kept breaking due to the tiny hollow plastic tubes... so I threaded 8/32 screws through the plastic, and then threded the plastic tubes back ontop of the screws and it all fits perfectly. hopefully they wont break right off anymore.

my slash is nuts on 3s, i couldnt imagine 4s!

brushlessboy16 02.20.2009 11:14 PM

U need to get some better rear tires...

those rear tires are horrible.. no grip what soever

the 50ft cartwheel was pretty funny yesterday tho.

Dirtfreak15 02.20.2009 11:16 PM

yeah... According to linc he didnt even notice, but givin whats goin on for him at the moment, i dont blame him... And yes it IS insane... even with new road rages, the thing still peels out, and has on-demand wheelies. it goes so fast that when i lock the tires, this thing will just slide down the road. On a speedrun yesterday, i caught an edge, and cartwheeled the rustler end over end for more than 50 feet! If it survives the night i will try and get some video tomorrow

said that..

not on demand wheelies- on demand wheelspin..:intello:

Dirtfreak15 02.21.2009 01:30 AM

yea defenatly get some video!!
i used to have a e-crt.5 with some off brand street tires and it would peel out all 4 tires on the street lol i think i had a 3300 on 3s lipo, crazy

cant wait for the video :)

eovnu87435ds 03.03.2009 11:36 AM

i have some video... its crap but i will put it up soon enough... During that video i found a little problem... My BEC sometimes shorts out, and I lose all control of everything for about 5 seconds... That happened while i was shooting, and the rustler drifted right into curb, and snapped the hub off of the front rim. oops... I did get some free tires yesterday... 4 premounted what look to be mashers, and 4 street tires that I need to glue to some rims i have. Pics will be up when I get home from school(photobucket is blocked in here)

I have a similar setup for a Rustler, I would suggest 1/8th scale solid foams the only tire/wheel that wont balloon but they do lose traction in dusty conditions...my setup is in my sig

Video! Finally!

Ok, well I found a nice day with daylight(finally) and so i took my rustler to the jumps down the street. I have 2 words for ya... zero traction! it was quite a challange to keep a straight line, even though it has been raining on and off all day. Here is the vid. As you can see, during the video, i almost made the same famous jump ben (brushlessboy16) did with his cen matrix.

Ben's CEN Matrix doing the jump I almost completed at 2:05 in the video

Still looking for that oddball tire... I have 6 boxes of tires... I may need to sell some of the others!!!

eovnu87435ds 03.14.2009 04:17 PM

linc if u give me all 6 boxes u are bound to include the right one!

Go for a swami-bar. When I had my brushless pede's and rustler's it was by far the best investment I made on all of them. Made me feel 100 percent safe knowing my motors wouldnt get damaged from bashing. I used a custom bend swami-bar in my attemt to surpass 70mph. Theres a vid on youtube if you want to check it out. '60mph rustler'. I was only geared at 19/55 in that vid and it to much torque... After that vid was made I geared up a little and was able to reach 74.1mph before selling it.

Takedown 03.14.2009 11:34 PM

I could have geared up alot more but 5mm super high tooth pinions were to rediculously expensive...

eovnu87435ds 03.27.2009 12:23 AM

just a little update on the rustler... I've been doing some mods to my electrical system because of my pita BEC. The thing has died 3 times, catching fire the 3rd time, and yet i throw it on my desk, pick it up in a few days and it revives itself again! I think nothing will happen to it anymore because of my newest mod. the casing to my MM was cracked, so rather than risk it falling out during a run, I made my own case out of an old game boy advance game case, and was able to fit my BEC inside it, as well as mount a 25mm fan i stole out of my turnigy charger. this has been able to reduce the clutter of wires signifigantly in my setup. I was also wondering... is it possible to keep the signal wire on the MM, but move the power wires to the BEC, so that I only have the 1 plug going to my rx? Here are pics:

it's been quite a while since i posted, so here's whats goin on with the rustler, now named Frankenrustler. People look at it and have no clue what it is or where it came from, but it works. I even got the comment from the track announcer "Hey Mike, Tamiya called and they want their truck back."

Since my MM is kinda dead, I was swapping my MMM back and forth between my hyper 7 and frankenrustler today. I'd like to give a big thanks to Castle for the enhanced Auto-lipo feature! it saved me tons of time that it would take to reprogram for every race! My ideal setup today was new proline holeshots in the rear, and jconcepts carvers in the front. My electric system was 2s lipo(my neu packs and ben's SMC's), MMM, and this aveox motor(36/15/1.5, 3768Kv) i got from lincpimp, geared 18/58. It had a traxxas 2075 servo in there for steering.

Now let me tell a little story of how it ran today. There was this kid who's name is Wess. He had an XXX-T. He loved his XXX-T. He was so cocky, and thought it could beat anything with his killer novak system and his 7 cell nimh pack. All this kid knows of is the losi system, the traxxas system, and the novak system for brushless. First heat came, i ended up braking an a arm, and i didnt find another until just before my 2nd heat. I got the rustler running on the track with 1:30 left in the heat, with no body, and hit his precious xxx-t. one of his solder joints(probably a cold one too) popped off and it costed him the race, while i was able to put down 2 laps and qualify above him. This made him furious, and so he was in the mood to play the game with no rules, and go all out. The main comes, and off the first turn i roll off the track. and im not seen by the marshalls. Wess puts a lap on me, and even still I end up finishing the race in 5th, and Wess in 7th!

There are a few things i'm thinking of doing to make the rustler even better. I'm thinking of partially or fully filling the hollow spokes of my wheels with clay, since my front wheels are rarely on the ground, and when im in the air, the wheels are so light that it cant be controlled. I end up doing wheelies off the ramps, sailing the not-aerodynamic-at-all truck on some random direction facing some random way.

The clay should weigh down the front a bit more, and should make the rear wheels heavy enough for me to guide the truck while in the air. Do u guys think that'll work?

Try flipping your tires inside out, and running around them twice with duct-tape. It will reduce if not eliminate the ballooning.

Nice job racing, I hate cocky kids... As far as the weighting goes, I think it would be better to mount a donut-shaped piece of steel on the inside of a wheel. The clay could fall out in one spot and make your wheel very unbalanced for the race.

lincpimp 05.25.2009 07:42 PM

Why not move the electrical components toward the front of the chassis. No added weight and you get more over the front axle.

BL_RV0 05.25.2009 07:46 PM

Then you have really long motor wires...
