Rustler speed attempt...
I know of up to 6 Rustlers attempting to crack the 100mph mark
There seems to be a lot of comment about nearly every aspect of each attempt, so I thought I'd throw my effort into the ring for a bit of flaming Feel free to comment... Details... Motor = Neu 1515 1.5d ESC = MMM Lipo = 2 x Thunder Power 4S (3300 30C) in parallel Gearing = 34 spur, 25 pinion Mod1 Wheels = Jato Arms = RPM Trans = stock Shocks = Big bore Shock towers = custom 4mm alloy/3mm CF Chassis = custom 4mm alloy Servo = stock Body = XL5 modified Front wing = inverted XL5 rear wing Rear wing = BRP super wing Wing mounts = custom alloy/CF http://s703.photobucket.com/albums/w...t=PC010266.jpg |
Where are the pics?

I'm jump to 17mm hexes with foams... Transmission won't last long with a 1515 - mine lastest about 3-4 runs...
Can that really still be called a rustler? |
Yeah, I really need some pics to enjoy flaming you to its fullest. Welcome to RCM!
|
The video of my 2nd run...poor quality and for the first 60 seconds the runs are slow but it was testing runs to prove the design...it works well!

I wouldn't exactly call that a Rustler anymore.
That does bring about a good question though. At what point does the vehicle cease to be called by its original name and begin being referred to as a custom vehicle? |

I haven't seen anything remotely 'stock' getting anywhere near 80mph, so maybe Custome Rustler is more appropriate for anything over 80?? My third run ended tragically with "Rustler" being run over... http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/Image000.jpg http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/Image001.jpg So I'm onto Gen 3, which should be complete in a couple of weeks |

Whenever you finish your rebuild, rebuild it with the FLM Tranny.

I've got respect for anyone aiming for huge speeds.
but I agree, there's no point in saying you have the fastest Rusty, Pede, Revo or whatever, if the model you're running is something far removed from the original. I've tried to speed-run my stock Rustler VXl and can't get above 60mph without flipping, and that's with weight in the front (which I consider is still within the definition of 'stock' ). Now, get a stock rusty reliably above that and I'll be impressed. |

Change it for what? a 16" slab of alloy? No.

A few facts;
It takes about five times as much power to go 100 mph vs 60 mph or the vehicle would have to have 80% less drag. When wind resistance exceeds the traction between the tires and the road, that is your maximum speed no matter what (likely less than 100 mph for rustler) I know it is fun to try to make something go fast that shouldn't but be warned that it will cost A LOT of money and time, and if you do not do a few calculations, trial and error will be endless. The other people who think they are shooting for 100 mph in a rusty will very likely not actually get there, so there really isnt anything to worry about in terms of competition. Just shoot for the highest possible speed you can get and be satified with that. Once you realize that you may have to shorten the A-arms so the wheels fit underneath a nice compact body, and that the front end has to be virtually weightless, there may be nothing left that resembles the original vehicle. |

Duuuddeee!!! Why did you crash???? All joking aside I think you can make it if your transmission can take the abuse for a few runs. As far as whether it is still a Rustler or not, I think if the stock tranny is used and the WB is within 2" of stock then it's OK. Tires are another question. Some say foams make it "not a ST anymore". I say foams may be necessary to get to these high speeds.
Does this look like a Rustler to you? It's far from stock, but it still bears a resemblance. I'm packing 6s 5000 FP, LMT 1940/7 Hi-Amp, and a MMM. http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...h_DSC00345.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...h_DSC00349.jpg |

stock arms - check Stock trans - check Essentially only chassis change & repower, smells like a Rusty to me! |
I passed "the test". :yipi:

Nice Rusty by the way...what sort of speeds you gettin?? |
Sounds like a plan. Then we can draft up a bill and send it to Congress to make it official.

I was getting about 70 mph with my Rustler, details are in my sig
|
PBO: good luck on your quest for 100mph. I was on track for 100mph last year and had to get away from it due to a distraction that came in the form of RC drag racing. Anyway, I was getting up to 90mph with a 5S Hyperion 5350LCX, Lehner Basic XL3100, Mamba Max and 18/36 Mod1 gearing. I had OFNA belted tires with tread in the rear using New Era 17mm hubs and Bandit front wheels. I also had a FLM chassis in stock length as well as front extended A-arms, stock length rear A-arms, and trans case. I used a JConcepts Bandit body for aerodynamics with front and rear wings like you have. My suspension looks pretty much like yours but with 4-Tec shocks in the fronts.
Again, all the best to you on this. |
Heres my basic rustler from awhile back... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emDnnbfJEGc
ESC- Hacker Master Car Sport Motor- Feigao 8xl Battery- FlightPower 3200mah 30c-60c 5s lipo Gearing- 21/48 Before and after pics... Before http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...U/DSC02807.jpg After http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...U/DSC03675.jpg I hit 68mph on one of the runs but I could have gone much faster. It was geared for casual fun in that vid plus I didnt have much room to cope with for good speeds. I would have bet that with the right conditions and downforce on the front along with proper gearing that I could have hit 80mph+ pretty easily. |

I know your configuration very well, you have been a major influence for my attempt & yes some of the design elements of mine are inspired by yours. All the best with the drag racing, it's a shame you won't be running anymore |
Thanks man. It came to a point where it was getting to be tedious trying to be successful at both and I had to divert most of my RC budget to drag racing so it was a no-brainer for me where I get most returns from the two. I am glad that my time and effort are helping you in the race for 100mph.

I've assembled the trans with 34 x 25...looks big

Looks about the right size  Make sure the gear mesh isn't too tight or you will overheat that motor pretty quickly.

Noted Sunny, it's a relaxed fit!

After the recent mods, I'll be running again today & will hopefully have a worthy video to post...fingers crossed

Good luck bud! Would love to see some video!!

PBO, here's hoping for some good results!

Bye bye sliders....... Good luck!

The right side failed under braking from 70.0mph (60-65% throttle), when I lost brakes I ran past a transformer by the road which caused steering glitching (it was slowing very well under steering alone!) followed by a low speed crash into a gutter. The damage report: 2 x new sets of sliders, a new front wing mount & a bit of heat gun work on the front wing It does handle well though with no apparent gremlins. I'll be running again next weekend, this time away from the transformer but without a Jato drive upgrade (they may be strong enough??) so I'll be nursing toward 80 on stock...I hope! |
80.2mph today before the plastic yoke failed. The new sliders recieved some cable ties to help their casue which just transfered the torque to the next weakest link...
