Looking for an R/C that wont break
OK, so my girlfriend has gotten into R/C because of me. she really loves it, but she cannot drive! The three times she has driven my cars and the one time she drove ben's truggy, here is what she did.
1. Hyper 7- Floored it into the curb, broke a steering knuckle. 2. CEN Matrix- floored it in reverse, smashing the wing into ben's ankles 3. Hyper 7- Floored it into a storm drain. hit the wall so hard that the mmm broke itself off it mount. it was held on with 80 lbs of force's worth of velcro, as well as yanking all 3 motor wires out. 4. Rustler- Floored it into a curb(at a 45 degree angle this time) and broke a steering knuckle. 3 and 4 happened today, even after i used EPA to half the throttle! So as you can see, she wants something that wont break, particularly when smashing it into a wall. Any ideas? |
lol, any vehicle will break given enough speed. Even if you beef everything up, the added weight will just add inertia and cause damage anyway. The best you can hope for is to find a vehicle with a cheap and plentiful supply of local parts.
Until she figures things out, run at lower voltage if possible. Setting the EPA is generally not the best way to go about it. |

Id take a look into a slash.... Theyre very durable.

Does anyone make an r/c brick?

u could if u wanted too :) |
Brick- All aluminum anything traxxas...

The strongest r/c I have owned is a tamiya m03 front wheel drive with a silver can and 6 cell nimh. Only good for street use and maybe does 20mph, but it has endured crashes at 60+mph with the novak 3.5r motor. I have also jumped it, off the roof, many times.

Pick her up a nikko rwd dodge viper.... Check up 'shack bash' on youtube and youll understand why.
|
have her run your RCs in larger open areas like football, baseball fields.....less likely to hit things....because sh*t DOES happen
|
A vxl rustler wouldn't be a bad place to start...as stated above, it has a training mode, has parts everywhere and is not that expensive to fix as apposed to other models
"Learning" how to drive rc cars w/a 2wd vehicle is not a bad place to start either |
i would recommend a slash. very, very tough trucks with tons of upgrade potential.
|
XL5 slash gets my vote. She learns how to drive then upgrades to BL. Perfect!

Cheap too!

How do you guys insert a fullsize pic?
duh..........help |

For my next trick I will cure world stupidity! Wait, that is way too difficult...how about balloon animals!:yipi: |
Ahhh I thought it could be done without offsite meanderings.... I am a lifelong novice
World Stupidity I can only add to.... |
Consider an evader ext, 2wd stadium truck but has a 1 year warrany against breakage! If it breaks you get the pieces for free
|
Sorry cheaper to look for a new GF - If she can't driva and RC do you ever want to be in a car with her?

My wife runs the slash the most, has vxl stuff in it so has plenty of pep, and has taken some pretty horrific tumbles. Only maintenance to it has been a couple sets of back tires, and a back bumper. My only complaint is we mainly run them in the yard, and in the summer the grass is too high. I just picked up an old e-maxx I'm thinking about pulling the front diff and shafts, and kind of having a e-sportmaxx, with a cheap brushless setup for this summer for better grass running.

As for world stupidity, I think we all have a hand in that, maybe not all of the time, but I have done a few "forehead slappers" in my time, DOH! |
All girls want to do is yank the trigger. I got a MRC and that is the most fun my wife has ever had RCing and it gives her plenty of time to react and really learn how to drive. So my suggestion is a losi mini crawler...crawling is fun and addicting, major change of pace from the go fast.
|
My Rustler is the most durable thing I've got. Once you replace the Traxxas parts with something better they're impossible to break. Out of the box Hyper 7s are very tough.
|
I have to vote for the Schumacher Havoc. Yes, it's nitro, but if you're motivated enough to do a conversion on it...it's honestly THE toughest-built RC out there IMO. Construction isn't too different to a Panzer tank lol. Bulletproof drivetrain, indestructible suspension...the thing's just nuts. Heck, Schumacher actually market the thing as a "Stunt Truck"...and they built it accordingly.
Of course, it depends on what you want from the RC. If you're not planning on hurling it through the air, then maybe a Slash or Rustler would be more suitable. |
Suggestions.
Like BrianG said put lower voltage battery packs in so it keeps her speed in a more reasonable range, hence she will not be able to kill the vehicle so easily. Let her get the hang of driving at slower speeds and once she gets the hang of it, and you feel comfortable bump the voltage up with larger packs. No matter what vehicle you set her up with, if she does not get her lead finger under control she will kill it.

Trying to find an RC that won't break is like trying to find a GF that won't age. Better off just running 'em hard and enjoying them, and replace any parts that break. Be careful of part "upgrades" as they expensive quick. Couple hop-ups are ok, but the last thing you want to build is a shelf queen that's expensive and doesn't want to be touched w/o more money. You're best off getting one well built out of the box rather than trying to make something its not and never will be. Just trade 'em off every few years when the parts get worn out and sloppy. Somebody is always cheap or broke enough to pick 'em up.
j/k |

Great write up. I love the comparison analogy. It's amazing how our GF or significant other require teh same treatment in order to do what we want them to do. I know my wife will get a kick out of that one. I have heard that the TRX Summit holds up pretty well under unskilled driving like you described. Or maybe your just not hitting the operator hard enough to get it under the desired control. Who is in command at your place? |
Slash all the way. My local track runs them and in 4 months of racing them i've seem 3 break(all because of hitting an I beam going down the straight). I raced a rustler last season in the stock class with 6 cells and I would not break. I ran it into walls and I ran into I beams and the thing would just keep on going.
|
Slash would be perfect since it is about the same size as a 1/8 buggy...she won't feel like she driving a smallish truck while you guys are running your 1/8 scales. Tough, inexpensive. She's going to run whatever she is driving into the curbs so might as well get something that stands a good chance at surviving the hit, and if it does break something parts are inexpensive and plentiful
|
Just install a proximity sensor on all corners of the vehicle and then feed that to a throttle override unit....
|
Summit.
Buy her a Summit and put her into crawling mode for a while. She will probably enjoy that once she gets started with it. At least you can keep her from driving 100mph all over the place.
