Brushless Lightning Stadium Pro conversion

Finally found some time inbetween other jobs to make myself something. I managed to get a cheap LSP of the bay so its time for some custom.

£60 motor, another bargain, its a Neu 1515

2 hours later....

http://www.ukmonsters.co.uk/lsp/lsp-03.JPG

quite proud of myself, I managed to cut the bearing hole on my rotary table and its a nice tight fit.

Im having the "center" diff at the back, I was thinging i'd have a really short rear prop shaft, but then decided to change the diff outdrive for a dogbone end and fit it direct to the rear diff. I turned a bit or steel down and bashed a couple of pins through, nice!

plastic spur.

skellyo 03.13.2009 12:05 PM

Very impressive!

suicideneil 03.13.2009 10:04 PM

Yay, another Candyman conversion in the making; he does make excedingly nice trucks

BL_RV0 03.13.2009 10:15 PM

Good start man.

Candyman2 03.14.2009 06:27 AM

Already cut the chassis plate with the same dimentions as the original, and put the front kick up in. Now just lining everything up.

http://www.ukmonsters.co.uk/lsp/lsp-06.JPG

something like that, i'll be using the same 18 cell packs i have for my maxx.

http://www.ukmonsters.co.uk/lsp/lsp-07.JPG

I cut the rear diff cup down so i can get the center diff as close to it as possible.

brushlessboy16 03.14.2009 07:26 AM

wow that looks great!, do you do your machining by hand?

I hope those nimhs arent there to stay

Candyman2 03.14.2009 07:30 AM

very nice! *cough lipos*

Jabe 03.14.2009 08:51 AM

That looks very impressive.
Thought id go for lipos, eventually you ending up buying those...

Dagger Thrasher 03.14.2009 10:01 AM

Great to see you posting again, CandyMan! That is some exceedingly sweet work there, as usual.:surprised:

However...I don't think you're gonna get a single response without the word "LiPo" in it! Please keep posting pics as this is an amazing project...but also, please consider LiPo man. You would *not* regret it. Much less hassle than NiMH, and much more power.:yipi:

Not to mention about 1/3 the weight.

lilmegill727 03.14.2009 05:30 PM

sick!

looks sick! going BL and lipo in my lsp is gonna be my project too eventually. looks great! cant wait to see it done!

suicideneil 03.14.2009 05:40 PM

Lipos = ideal birthday or xmas present, so wont cost you a penny...

I remember quite a while back when the original centerdiff conversion prototypes for the Gorillamaxx chassis' were being made, that there was talk of having the centerdiff mated directly to the front or rear diff just like how you've done it Candyman. Does make for a very tidy drive line, altough I forsee a custom length center dogbone being needed to take drive to the front wheels. Plan for that is..?

Candyman2 03.15.2009 06:48 AM

Hey Neil how you doing? Front shaft is indeed going to be about a foot long, I was going to get one made up, then I had a "what the hell am i doing" moment, im the candyman! I can make one! besides getting a dog bone made would require a cup each end, currently it has a cv joint at the gearbox end and I want to keep this.

Lipo-no no for me, no need, I can either get a set of 6s lipos and a charger and change the layout on my emaxx and this for them, or just use what I already have sitting here, 3 sets of 18 cell packs that are pretty good. Yes they are a bit heavier but they still propel my vehicles to silly speeds. Also with all you guys selling your nimh's off on ebay I can pick up a bargain! lol the last set of 18 matched cost me £45, thats $60 lol.

Now back to the action. This was a very hard bit to do, the alignment of the diff has to be spot on else it will bind, using a shaft allows for nearly almost angle, but being direct it has to mate perfectly. Getting it to stay in place whilst drilling the hols from underneath was hard but not impossible, now done ok. I also cut a slight recess in the chassis for the spur gear to sit in.

Top deck will be something like this, bit of a fancy long job but I wanted it to look cool, lus I really liked emaxlers chassis desing and wanted something similar and very symetrical

brushlessboy16 03.15.2009 07:55 AM

Wow, great work. Try and snag a front center driveshaft out of a Savage 5t :)

Tha works too :P

Candyman2 03.15.2009 08:39 AM

lol, yeh i know what your saying but it'll cost nothing to cut my existing one in half, slide a bit of steel tube over it and weld it at the right length.

lutach 03.15.2009 10:58 AM

Looks good.

suicideneil 03.15.2009 05:16 PM

Does indeed- I like the upper deck design, definately worth going the extra mile to have a stunning home made chassis if you're capable. :intello:

Im alright, planning on taking my pet truck for a walk next week now the good weather has finally arrived, give my Medusa 36-80-2000kv a test run on 5s lipo... should be interesting... :oh:

Superbasher 03.16.2009 06:01 AM

Didn't know you were still around Candyman. Sounds like you have got a good project going! :)

Candyman2 03.16.2009 01:28 PM

Course im still around :yipi:

Im looking at a medusa 80mm 1600kv now, this Neu I got cheap is a 2y 1100kv, needs something like 30v to get the most out of it. I might have to swap it after a test run.

Made some sides to stop the cells flying out and started to trim the top deck to shape.

Nice. I use the 1515/2Y with 8S lipos and it is a beast without the heat lol.

Candyman2 03.18.2009 01:15 PM

trimmed it a bit more and tapped and drilled a few holes

http://www.ukmonsters.co.uk/lsp/lsp-12.JPG

http://www.ukmonsters.co.uk/lsp/lsp-13.JPG

got these battery strap things from 3racing, pretty good and light so having a bit of a redesign.

Dagger Thrasher 03.18.2009 01:18 PM

Looking good! Those 3racing strap look pretty sweet, too. I just can't get over how beefy that motor mount is, though! How thick is it?

Candyman2 03.18.2009 01:20 PM

10mm, thats not going to bend in a hurry.

Dagger Thrasher 03.18.2009 01:28 PM

Crikey...and I thought the mount on my Havoc was thick (6mm). You ain't gonna have any problems with that.:oh:

Takedown 03.18.2009 02:47 PM

Looks really good man. But those nimh's have to go. Nimh is history. What mini lathe do you use, its looks as if it does a great job. By the way are you using 6061 or 7075?

I'm also interested in hearing about this mini-lathe. I'm really tired of making things out of tin snips and a hammer.

Or sending out a ton of cash to a manufacturer to make your parts for you....

Candyman2 03.18.2009 05:36 PM

6061 on the ally, I couldnt get hold of any 7075.

here is my little mill and little lathe, love my mill, I use it all the time

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ryan.co...lathe-mill.jpg

Unsullied_Spy 03.18.2009 05:42 PM

How much was that mill?

Candyman2 03.18.2009 05:56 PM

mill is an X1, cost me £250 uk, thats about $350 us, the lathe was about the same.

Unsullied_Spy 03.18.2009 06:12 PM

Dang! That's a very good price for a mill. I've been looking to buy one but they were all around $3,000.

Candyman2 03.18.2009 06:47 PM

little mills are cheap, big mills are expensive, as with a lot of things.

Unsullied_Spy 03.18.2009 06:53 PM

Yeah, but I wasn't expecting to see one that cheap...

Candyman2 03.18.2009 07:02 PM

lol, ok, its gone up a bit since i bought mine

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-A...kII-719673.htm

The Sieg X1 gets rebranded and sold under a few names.

OZ-RUSTLER 03.18.2009 07:07 PM

What is the largest shank bit it can take?
Thanks

suicideneil 03.18.2009 07:27 PM

The tooling is usually the expensive part after the intial purchase, you could blow a fortune on the zillions of attachments, bits etc etc. Ebay is a good place to get a nice lathe or mill though- the old antique items are sturdy as you like, and work just as well- I miss my old school's Colchester lathe; weighed a few tons and had a 6 speed gear box that was adjusted by a pair of ring-handle things, beautiful machines...

skellyo 03.18.2009 08:34 PM

For those of you in the US looking for the same mill as what he has:
