Got me a Quark SSB today

Found a nice deal on Ebay and couldn't resist and one week later it arrived from South Korea.
I love the 80B quark smoothness, and want to see what the SSB version is all about. I'll post my findings once I plug this baby up. The capacitor bank looks interesting. Check out the pics

Looks good, I did not know that it supported sensored and brushed motors...

Is the sensor port the same as a novak compatible port?

snellemin 04.13.2009 03:47 PM

The sensor port looks pretty standard to me. Fits my LRP motors, which plug into my LT ESC's.

I'll take some nude shots of the ESC tonite.

johnrobholmes 04.13.2009 05:02 PM

I was wanting to carry those things for crawlers something bad. Tis a shame they pulled out of the US.

lincpimp 04.13.2009 05:09 PM

I found that "good deal" and had to pick one up... For the price it is cheaper than the Novak HV I was going to get to run the HV motors I have...

BrianG 04.13.2009 05:17 PM

I wonder how long Quark will be around. The quarkbrushless.com website still has their old line, and sky-technology.net doesn't seem to be functioning. Too bad, they were one of the smoothest (if not the smoothest) ESCs around. I guess they couldn't compete with the newer prices from other manufacturers? I wonder if those "good deals" on eBay are inventory clearances?

snellemin 04.13.2009 05:22 PM

Coolbeans man. Shipping is fast with that guy. I'm gonna slap my 3T x12 lrp and 1515 Tekno motor on the ESC and see what it can do.

snellemin 04.13.2009 05:24 PM

The Quark korean website is still up Brian. I go there once in a while to drool on the SSB. Well untill the nowing seller on ebay got them for cheap.

Seems to be inventory clearance. Could be that S&T is coming up with a new line.

BrianG 04.13.2009 05:29 PM

What's the Korean website URL? I'm lazy today.

snellemin 04.13.2009 05:31 PM

uhhhh, yea sorry.

lincpimp 04.13.2009 05:38 PM

I have 4.5 and 6.5 novak hv motors laying around that I plan to try on 4s. Not sure what to run them in, maybe a buggy or the slayer... Might even give it a try in a monster truck with a lower kv sensorless motor and 5s. Not sure if the 6s rating is true or not, we need fet specs!

snellemin 04.13.2009 05:50 PM

The most I used with the 80B qaurk is 6s A123. Kinda chicken to try 7s A123 and blow the baby up. I did use 7s A123 with lutach's 120A 1/10 esc and it worked great.
But looking at that rectifier spec on the Quark cap bank, I am willing to bet that it can do 6s with some common sense.

You swiped the last ESC heh. I only see the combo's left.

BrianG 04.13.2009 05:54 PM

The FETs on the Quark 125B were the same exact part number and count as the original MM. MM went with different FETs later on.

snellemin 04.13.2009 06:02 PM

I know, but it's cheaper to get a mamba fix for 50 bucks, than buying a new qaurk 80b for 125.

snellemin 04.13.2009 07:37 PM

I opened the baby up and can't read the fets.

What's_nitro? 04.13.2009 07:53 PM

I like the modularity of it. You could almost build your own ESC....

lincpimp 04.13.2009 09:21 PM

Hmm, can't wait to get mine! (yep, it was the last one!) I like the look of it, seems well built, but what do I know about that! I will wait until the esc gurus take a look!

jhautz 04.13.2009 10:52 PM

If you go to that sellers regular website you can get as many as you want for that price. See the banner accross the top of his auction for the web address. Combos with the motors are $10 cheaper than the ebay price.

If they had the mk03 version with 120 amp rating and switchingg 6s BEC I'd get one too. I've wondered about these for a long time, but with Quark pulling out of the US all together I just don't want to deal with any possible hassle.

Please do a review when you get them running guys. Always wondered if the "next gen" quarks were any good. I still love the way the 125B drives, but the max setting on the LVC of 3.0v is just to low IMO. Hopefully they have this fixed on the new controllers.

BrianG 04.13.2009 10:55 PM

FYI, I fixed the spelling in the thread title; it was driving me nuts!

snellemin 04.13.2009 11:52 PM

LOL, thanks mang.

lutach 04.14.2009 07:08 AM

Ive seen the new line of Quark ESC, but haven't heard much. I know they're available in Asia. Here is a thread about them: http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric...esc-quark.html and http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric...hless-esc.html

snellemin 04.14.2009 10:46 PM

The ESC is smooth as hell mang. It turns a 2.5 T motor butter smooth. I don't even need the sensor cable.

Hey Linc, in the instruction it mentions a red light....well they meant orange.

I want to see the startup of the 2.5 with no sensor!

SV6000 04.15.2009 07:23 AM

I used to have one of these guys and i am sorry to say that it literally lasted about 3.5mins. it was working fine the temps were normal and all of a sudden it stopped and burst into flames. It must of got a short or something. It was the mk-03 version. Now i know what you are thinking and that it was a one off but all the guys i race with all bought one as well and the same failures happened to them in varying degrees. from shutdowns, to letting the smoke out to total meld down. Our LHS stopped stocking them in the end as they all kept coming back. But they might be ok in the lighter drag cars, just dont put your batterys too close

lutach 04.15.2009 08:00 AM

Quark start ups has been as good as Schulze's and when my 125B was working good it was fun, but it let the magic smoke out. I haven't heard much from Quark (Sky & Technology) and would've loved to see these line up of ESC go further then it did. The new ESCs doesn't look as robust as the SSBs.

snellemin 04.15.2009 09:41 AM

I was worried about the going up in flames part, just like with any new ESC I get. To see if it does what the ESC advertises, I had it do burnouts on my garage floor with the 2.5T motor. I'll take a vid of it tonite doing the same burnout against a piece of wood. I didn't use the fan yet. Heatsink temps where ok. The heatsink was warmer when I solder up the wires to the posts.

I like how you can adjust amp draw, drag brakes from 0-100% with the potentiometer.

SV6000 04.15.2009 09:53 AM

Yeah i do think i got a dud because i was only doing test runs to see how it would handle the motor. I was doing figure 8s on my driveway when it cogged, stopped and caught fire. NOthing wrong with the motor though. I am sure yours will be fine.

lincpimp 04.15.2009 10:06 AM

I am excited, this may be my new buggy esc, not sure right now. I do have a hv4.5 and 6,5 to test the sensored running, and I have plenty of sensorless motors that I can run it with. Need to whip up a tray for the hyper that can handle both 4s and 5s packs...

snellemin 04.15.2009 11:16 AM

I noticed toughracing putting 9 more ESC on ebay.

snellemin 04.15.2009 12:42 PM

I found these pics again on photobucket. The heatsinks says plasma and the one Lutach mentioned was Plasma II. I'm guessing that the SSB I have is a Plasma and the Plasma II are the low profile versions.

You know this will be killer until Castle comes along and spoils the fun.

crazyjr 04.15.2009 11:00 PM

Did his auctions get pulled? i checked and there is nothing under tough racing

snellemin 04.16.2009 12:16 AM

type in qaurk esc and it should pop up. Seller is nowingu.

johnrobholmes 04.16.2009 09:25 AM

I found a Korean friend who has been able to contact Quark. I may be able to start importing them again if Fedex costs are not too prohibitive.

snellemin 04.16.2009 10:03 AM

Sounds good JRH. $122 is a whole lot cheaper then a new mamba max or tekin rspro.

RS Pro sure, but MMs run about $130 new...

snellemin 04.17.2009 10:54 AM

True that the mamba can be purchased for ~130,-, but after adding a fan and additional caps to run a 2.5T motor properly, it's not such a bargain anymore. You get into the Mamba Monster price range and that esc is just too big for 1/10. Takes up too much real estate. It is alot easier to program a Tekin or the new quark in the field.
