Post Up Your Internet Speed~

I'm just curious what kind of speeds you guys are seeing where you live. Here's mine:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/454584505.png

We have the Comcast high-speed service. It's awesome! :mdr: What's even cooler is that my Mom found out that we actually had "DSL" speeds (over cable) before and it was less expensive to switch to the high-speed with our service bundle.

Just use the "recommended server" on www.speedtest.net- that's your fastest connecition.

What's_nitro? 04.17.2009 06:04 PM

Dammit I spelled "internet" wrong in the title...... :slap: Could a Mod fix that for me? Thanks!

BrianG 04.17.2009 06:18 PM

Fixed title.

I just have regular cable inet, so I only get a little over 7.5Mb/sec :cry:

What's_nitro? 04.17.2009 06:23 PM

TY for fixing that. Spelling errors really bug me...grammatical errors, not so much. :smile:

That's kinda funny that your speed is EXACTLY how fast basic cable internet claims to be- 768k. :lol:

Brian, if you think your connection's slow:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/454612634.png

On the bright side, I'm getting automatically upgraded to 10mb next month - Virgin are upgrading their whole range. Right now, it's a 2mb connection. It's weird to think that only 2 or 3 years back, 2mb would have been considered insanely fast.

How fast can internet connection get, do you guys know?

BrianG 04.17.2009 07:28 PM

I'm pretty happy with the speed overall. I find that the speed seems to be limited by the other end rather than my connection. And I rarely download multiple large items at once. I could use a little faster upload speed, but that's just me being impatient.

Check out some of these other ones:

I just created a blank HTML file with the following code and ran it to see a bunch of results and picked a few of the more impressive ones:

HTML Code:

<body>
<script language="javascript">
function zfill(n,p){
        n+='';
        while(n.length<p)n='0'+n;
        return n;
}

for(var i=0;i<999;i++){
        document.write('<img src="http://www.speedtest.net/result/454600'+zfill(i,3)+'.png" /> &nbsp;');
}
</script>

</body>

Ok, so that's from work, I'll get one from home in a bit...

Edit: Here's my test from home.

This one's to chicago - geographically further, but the pipe to chicago from where I am is more direct.

I would kill for the speed some of you guys are getting. This is the fastest available in my subdivision ... crappy DSL.

The town just north of mine has fiber to the home, and you can get 50Mb up AND down.

It makes me want to move. :-)

_paralyzed_ 04.17.2009 07:57 PM

do my numbers mean something is wrong?

http://www.speedtest.net/result/454641137.png

BrianG 04.17.2009 08:02 PM

You should be getting higher results given you are on cable. Try a different server. Even though they are geographically further, other locations may be wired better, or maybe there is high traffic in the twin cities.

Possibly since you have cable. Get something like CCleaner and some kind of anti-spyware and see where your at.

_paralyzed_ 04.17.2009 08:09 PM

hmmm....

http://www.speedtest.net/result/454646491.png

kraegar 04.17.2009 08:17 PM

Don't run the test over a wireless connection, like from a laptop.

_paralyzed_ 04.17.2009 08:17 PM

i get similar results from every server. i do have cable, but pay for "the cheapest" service they offer. I guess I'm getting screwed:gasp:

BrianG 04.17.2009 08:24 PM

I'm not paying more than the minimum and I get wayy better than that. Even if testing off your wireless laptop, I would expect much faster than that, unless the signal strength to your access point was really weak. If you can try hooking a CAT5 cable from the laptop to the router/access point (or even directly to the cable modem).

kraegar 04.17.2009 08:28 PM

You could also try a network diagnostics test. Google has one: http://www.measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools

Might detect a problem for you.

-real pc idiot here- I'm hooked to my modem with an ethernet cable, is that cat5?

kraegar 04.17.2009 08:34 PM

Yeah, ethernet = cat5.

Ignore the test I posted from google - it won't mean much to ya!

lol, sorry. That's what comes from talking to IT people all day; they all (or should) know the lingo. :oops:

But yeah, CAT5=ethernet cable

I too suggest some type of network troubleshooter. I don't know of any off hand, but I'll look around and I'm sure others will have some input...

Edit: Here is an article that has some of the basic stuff to look at: http://www.ehow.com/how_2133014_incr...paign=yssp_art

_paralyzed_ 04.17.2009 08:46 PM

This is the new RCM computer here. I don't think I've screwed it up this fast, and I think Arct1k has it fairly protected. It is sloooow though. Mostly on stupid facebook :diablo:

rawfuls 04.17.2009 09:21 PM

Less than 1mb? Jesus.

:P

Jeez, 111 ping? That's a lot..

Brian, know why lately my Upload speed is being to crap out on me?

Could be my old router, but doubt it if my DL speed is that fast.

bdebde 04.17.2009 09:55 PM

http://www.speedtest.net/result/454685841.png

I would love to have higher speeds like most of you guys, but I have DSL at over max range (over 18000 ft). The "standard" DSL is up to 6M speed, but because of my extreme distance I can only get lower speed. In fact the only way I got DSL this far out from switch, is because a friend of mine knows the area supervisor. I called him up and asked to try it even though I am almost 1000 ft over range.

BrianG 04.17.2009 09:59 PM

Is there some kind of repeater or booster they can add somewhere in between? Might cose a pretty penny if it's even possible, but if you're that hard up for speed...

Your ping results look pretty decent though...

bdebde 04.17.2009 10:07 PM

It certainly beats dial up (OMG who uses that anymore?). Pages actually load quicker at home (this connection) than they do at work with a much faster connection.

My speed sucks, but I'm using wireless on my laptop and my Cable modem is about 7 years old.

My iPhone has 180kbps download and 27kbps upload

Using wireless on laptop with DSL. Its fast enough for me. lol

Just about everything beats dial-up! Before my g/f moved in where I have cable internet, I set her up so she could use her Palm Treo as a modem hooked to a PC. It wasn't the best (latency was kinda high and was download limited to a 17MB for a single file), but even that was better than dial-up.

What's_nitro? 04.17.2009 11:12 PM

Cool. Most of you have a very good connection. I heard Comcast was gonna be upgrading their line pretty soon, too. The high-speed service will have up to 50Mb/s DL.

Hey Bdebde, do they give you any discount for the slower service? Ya know, since you know a guy??? :wink:

*edit* New test:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/454717786.png

10ms ping.... :surprised:

_paralyzed_ 04.17.2009 11:18 PM

My desktop should have the same results, right? If not the slow speed is computer related?
