MGT 3.0 Conversion
So- I bought one from TH, 'cause they are on sale for a VERY good price. I have zero knowledge about these trucks, so I have a few questions.
1) I hear the diffs are only 2-spider setups- How will they hold up, and/or are there ways to make them stronger? Can other diffs fit, or will 2 more spiders fit in the existing diff cup? 2) How durable is the transmission? Would it behoove me to swap in an E-Maxx tranny to more easily fascilitate the dual-motor setup I have in mind? 3) Aside from the drivetrain, what can I expect to break first? |
1) i don't know
2) it would behoove you. the sideways motor just doesn''t lend itself to dual electric motors 3) i don't know |

In any case, sideways motors are great, no torque twist side to side. |

Thanks guys. UPS expects it to arrive on Friday. I will see how much room there is and go from there. There are benefits to both setups, so I think the deciding factor will be "ease of integration".

J/K, but I am not sure if the chassis is wide enough to drop the emaxx tranny into. I would go with a single motor myself, behind the tranny, with a battery tray/servo mount up front. |
Here's a conversion Tony did a little while ago, good place to start for ideas. I think it turned out pretty good. We have two of these trucks sitting on the shelf that nobody's buying, I keep eying (spell check says that's how you spell eye-ing, weird) them up for a build, I have some ideas for it, but no money for those ideas. Oh well, good luck on yours!:mdr:

Thank's for the link Matt. So will this be the world's "second" MMGT conversion? I have ditched the dual-motor idea. There just isn't enough room (). I have a different plan now- a DDO setup (direct-drive outrunner). That tranny input shaft is suspiciously long, and happens to be 5mm in diameter. :mdr:
|
Sounds great! Pics would be a nice addition.
|
OK! :grrrrrr:
|
Well, first of all- I'll get pics up tomorrow night...
Second, I took some measurements for a DDO and found that the input shaft is actually too short to mount a good-sized outrunner to. So I found this to replace it with. Then I'll get this motor. I'll be running 5s lipo with a MMM. The motor is spec'd at 1400W handling, and it will be "geared" for about 40 Mph. What do you think? |
Get an axi motor, don't waste your time with the cheapo motors... Give sike a pm and ask him what he has, IIRC he has a bunch of motors to move...
|
I know Axi motors are the sh!t, but I REALLY don't want to put up the cash for one of them. That Turnigy motor has the specs that I want (not something you find very often while doing a custom build) and it is inexpensive. I have a few of the AeroXP motors already and I am very satisfied with them.
|
Here we go. Some pics for ya
So what's the biggest outrunner you guys know of that has a 5mm shaft and about 600kV??? |
|
I really don't like the MGT3.0 for a conversion, there isn't much room for the battery. I can't recall who, but someone here has done one and the battery was in a wierd spot. If you could do a gorilla style chassis i think you'd be fine, but i think it will be quite a challenge
|
or ditch the transmission entirely, put a big outrunner really low in the chassis so you can have the whole chassis for battery and esc etc.
|
It's ALIVE!!!
...And it does standing backflips!!! :surprised:  :yipi:
PICS HERE: http://s52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...albumview=grid The battery wont be mounted like that. It fits nicely, parallel to the chassis on that side. I just have to make a custom-sized tray for it. Initial tests of this conversion are very promising. |

BB16 would you mind editing the pictures out of your post? They take up too much space, which is why I posted them as a link.
EDIT- Uh thanks, but you didn't have to delete your entire post........... |
So I ran it for about 20 min. today. No problems at all! I tweaked the settings on the MMM and it starts perfectly 90% of the time. There is no lack of torque with this setup. I am going to need a wheelie bar for sure! After few min. of WOT through the grass the motor was just getting warm to the touch, and the battery/MMM don't care what I do. I ended up bolting on the tray I had instead of making another one.
