me and my designs....

hi, i thought i should introduce myself on this site.

i find the normal racing of RC boring so i thought i should design and make them instead. im 16 (17 in september) just finished my GCSE's so i have allll the spare time in the world.

back in january i started to design a rocket powerd RC that is aiming to go 200mph, i thought this would be a good project to start with, how hard can it be?

i started with some maths with thrust, weight ratios and lots of stuff.... then aquierd some CAD programs and put whats in my head onto the pc...

www.black-diamond-rc.blogspot.com <-------- site

i finished the final design in febuary, and realised how expensive it would be, and this was 2 months of solid work, nothing else was done in this time... and there are twice as many designs than there are on the site....

so then realising im poor and young i designed for the fun of it and done 3 other cars that havent been done before that are ilistrated on my other blog.

www.black-arrow-rc.blogspot.com <---------- site

i then took a break from RC for a few months to concentrate on GCSE's. and now im back designing, i have a few things im willing to sell to make this project, and i plan on it being a nitro powerd, 4 speed (custom) speed car. it will be a cross between F1 and la mans except without the wings...

at the moment i dont have solidworks so i cant do any 3D drawings of my design, i only have my 2D software but will be getting solidworks again soon.

thanks for reading through my story.

Good luck with the design but is it me or do none of the cars have steering?

kwik 07.05.2009 08:39 AM

the first one does, the second lot of cars on the other site dont except the ducted fan car steers with a rudder...

i think i designed the steering for the trike but didnt upload the picture... not sure...

black diamond steers like a caster wheel that gets pushed, but as it only needs to go in a strait line, it doesnt need alot of throw...

whats a GCSE?

supralover72 07.10.2009 02:08 AM

F1/LeMans hybrid with no wings? What's left on the car then? You can't go 200 with no downforce!

General Certificate of Secondary Education, its what we brits get when we finish our exams aged 16 and leave Secondary school.

Interesting designs indeed. I would think the cheaper and easier route at this point would be to start with some existing platforms and modify them with your ideas/designs to test your theories to see what does and doesn't work. Building and rebuilding several completely custom vehicles will get expensive quick. Good luck either way!

wow, i thought this was an english sight... well, help iss help i guess...

it took me about a month to come up with that design and i done some fluid dynamics and CoG calculations and it all seemed stable and it in theory should work...

my new car is nitro powerd and have been looking at more unconventional designs like using a tether car ( http://www.amrca.com/cars.htm something like that ) and modifying it so it can steer and be RC...

these cars go 200mph in a circle and cover about 12 miles to get there (19.3km) and i was hoping to either change the gearing or find a huge 12 mile stretch of tarmac...

so now iv come to conclusion of basing it on a tether car, but with my own designs... so im thinking of using a sliperential from this site and a big engine in a thin chassis = FAST!! ... i hope...

thanks for the replys

Great designs. Are you going to the next Speed Event?

kwik 07.11.2009 01:34 PM

lutach... i remember that name... lol

and which event? english or american one?...

im going to the english one... and its a day before my birthday :D

The English one I think will allow rockets and I'll be watching the English forum to see if they'll broadcast it like they did last year.

kwik 07.11.2009 01:44 PM

yup, english one is more free to designs i think, as in there is the jet powerd car by ken aswell and ziggys rocket car... and there was going to be my rocket car but i couldnt afford it...

ill try setting up some form of ustream video thing if you want if nobody else is, and ill take a video camera and capture every run...

Video is always good. See if you guys can get some sort of Media coverage as well.

kwik 07.11.2009 02:35 PM

ill try my best to get it seen by as many as possible...

i have a nice design in my head for this speed car but making it will be something else...

do nitro engines work well with carbon fibre, so could i use a carbon fibre chassis then have a nitro engine on, or should i use alluminium...

If you know how to work with carbon fiber and price is not an issues, the two should go together nicely. Aluminum is just easier to work with and cheaper.

a little update...

im now thinking along the lines a rocket, using a brazed chassis, roughly 2ft long and maybe using an EDF and a solid booster rocket...

i was thinking a brazzed chassis using tubing etc, would be nice to have no body work except a front cone and maybe a few wings to keep it strait... like a skelaton chassis...

what do you think?

suicideneil 08.10.2009 09:39 PM

Open body work will create alot of turbulance and drag- you really need a fully enclosed frame/chassis, using something like those drag racers use:

http://www361.pair.com/brideaud/newe...0cf_2006_b.jpg

only enclosed at the rear too, like some of your other designs.

nitrostarter 08.10.2009 11:54 PM

Take a look at Nic Case's designs...

kwik 08.11.2009 02:25 PM

iv had a rethink and do you think a balsa chassis would work, with the 2mm balsa wood sandwiched by 1mm aluminum on each side (basicly because it would be easy to cut and its cheap and light.

but would it be rigid enough (may have front suspention nicked from another car... ) and could i cut the aluminum (T6) with a dremel? or should i use a hacksaw?

forgot to mention, i was planning a drag car type chassis...

thanks
chris

nitrostarter 08.11.2009 02:34 PM

Honestly, I would seal the balsa in an epoxy like they do with wood boats. I have a wooden Hydro made from light plywood. The wood was really soft and flimsy until we epoxied it. Its solid as a rock now.
I would apply a light coat over the balsa. It will remain light but strength is not a question after that.

kwik 08.11.2009 02:41 PM

would i drill all the holes before or after? and should i still use the aluminum?

nitrostarter 08.11.2009 02:44 PM

I would drill the holes first and then seal everything.

As far as the Aluminum, I would take a test strip of balsa and seal it up and let it dry. Then see if its strong enough for your likings.

I have seen wooden boats run into rocks, banks, turtles, alligators... and nothing happen to the hull. I've seen then stepped on and the hull be fine. The epoxy hardens and strengthens the wood tremendously.

kwik 08.11.2009 03:03 PM

wow, ok ill do that then, thanks for the help :)

kwik 08.26.2009 06:37 PM

a little update, as i havent been on here a while :)

ok, im back to be able to use a hybrid rocket, except now, iv been litterally forced to use a more powerful rocket as the company i was going to use... i cant... so had to change to a differnt one which means a more powerful rocket...

which isnt a problem, just means i have a extra 5kg to play around with...

iv found a schumacher BIG 6 on ebay that i want, this will give me a perfect front and rear end to my car, and i also found a cheap way of me using a 4mm aluminium chassis, instead of the balsa and ali method i was thinking off...

im still waiting on decnet CA programs so i can visualise what i want to make...

but the most important change.. the name change.. to Black Pheonix, as this car was created from the original ideas of my Black Diamond car which was too difficult to make...

i dont think there are any other updates realy.. but though i should stay posting on here and keep you updated.... :na:
