My MMMv3 & 2200 Combo is TOPS!
With all these threads about MMM going up in smoke. I thought I'd try to shed a balanced perspective on things.
I have 2 MMMv3 2200 combos, one in my ERBE and one in me 8ight-E. Both have been running awesome, the ERBE has never even had the fan go on, and the 2200 has never been more than warm to touch. The 8ight-E did have period where the fan was coming on for a bit and the 2200 was getting hot to touch. But that was when I was playing around with pinions. Now the MMMv3 in my 8ight hardly ever has the fan running. I often switch it off then on again at the end of a pack to make sure the fan still works. My setups are as follows ERBE SMC CMAX 40C 4s & Tanic 6s 35c 18/54 pinion/spur Losi 8ight-T wheel & XTT combo 8ight-E SMC CMAX 40C 4s, Losi 25C 5s & Tanic 35C 5s 15/45 pinion/spur Proline Bowties v3 Cheers, |
Glad to see someone post up their good luck. I just sold my e-revo that had a v3 mmm in it with about 50 hours of use on 5s and never a hickup. I have a mmmv3.1 in my RC8T that has seen about 10 hours of track and an hour or two bashing before the race season started and no problems with that either

Just goes to show size does matter!! My unit failed with a 15+lbs truck!!
|
True, in my bog stock Savage Flux, the ESC fan does come on quite a bit, which is why I only use 4s on it.
|
Guys that are running heavier cars/trucks... what motors are you running?
I would imagine a really low Kv with 6s would be the ticket. IMO, I think a savage / 15+lb truck with a 2200Kv motor is undersized. Edit: unless geared appropriately. |
The Savage Flux comes stock with a CC2200 geared 20/44
If anything the Truck is overpowered even on 4s. |
Come on guys this was supposed to be a thread about success, not another one about Monsters failing in heavy trucks geared for high speeds.

I love my 2200.. The motor could stand an upgrade though- i have the Pre production traxxas edition without the wire shrouds etc.. still running liek a champ in my converted revo |
[QUOTE=fastbaja5b;304255]The Savage Flux comes stock with a CC2200 geared 20/44
QUOTE] This doesn't mean that it's geared correctly..... Edit: 20/44 is good for doing standing backflips..... I can get me ERBE to do that too... but I would consider that abuse ;-) just my 2c. Infact the rollout at 20/44 on the savage is way taller than my 8ight.. Not a surprise that Savages are smoking ESCs.... |
It's geared for 35-40mph, the motor has never been above 140f, the packs have never come off more than warm and the ESC has never temp'd over 100f after a run.
And that's not geared correctly?!? |

As I said, so far so good with mine, yes the Fan does come on, quite a bit actually, and no I won't be piling more than 4s lipo in it given the failure rate of the MMM above 4s lipo, but besides a noisy fan it's been fine.
|
Besides the fan takinga dump on me, my MMM has been great (2nd one). Even with the fan not working it hasn't thermaled (knocks on wood).
|
I have a combo with 2650kv motor running on 4S.
My fan stoped, put some oil in the bearing and is working again. 12 hours of track, and beside that situation with the fan, So far so good |
my MMM has been buried in mud and environmentaly been treated rather roughly...
yet it's cranking out 45mph on 6s in my revo at the track and is coming 3rd consistently (although all the other cars i race against also run 6s and MMM's LOL) great ESC and i really cant see why people are having so much trouble...i guess i'm a wimp when it comes to power hehe castle, thanks for the creation of the mamba max, mamba 25 and the MMM, all of which revolutionised the RC industry, and thanks for having the best customer service EVER. |

Hopefully the next one I get is a good one :) |
i still belive it's the way you treat them and then they are great on 6s.
ive been told before that my MMM programing is "wimpy" so that might be the case. i cant upload MMM.dat files onto here and i cant remember my setup but basically...if i MASH the throttle on 6s, it can pull a wheelie with a center diff (revo w/ the 3905 CD) not that that is saying much but it's pretty wimpy by most peoples standards. maybe that's my cause for success on 6s? |
IMO the problem with the MMM is the end user!!! People that gear their trucks to the moon are bound to have problems. Just because your truck still has the power to wheelie when geared for 60MPH doesn't mean that you can gear it higher! Brushless motors don't have a brain and will work themselves until they become a molten chunk of metal! I have run on 4s, 5s, & 6s and never geared for more than 50MPH. When I was geared for 50MPH I had quality batteries, 6s, and a quality motor with a proper kv rating for running 6s. Stop listening to Traxxas and HPI and start listening to the knowledgeable members on here. Sure a Revo or flux can do 60MPH....under ideal circumstances! Quality 6s Lipos, proper gearing, smooth drivetrain, and a smooth throttle finger. Gearing for 40-45MPH and running 6s will get better temps, longer life of the system and you'll still have a grin from ear to ear!
Sorry for my rant but I'm tired of hearing how peoples MMM died in their 15+lb truck geared for 50+MPH |
here here ^^
see my post "whine and winge forum"...same thing...silly isnt it. |
Mine's still going strong, too. It's one of the few remaining V1s with the V3 case and latest software, running 5S Elite 35C LiPos and geared for about 60mph. I know, that sounds high...but my Havoc is only 2WD, and lighter than most other 1/8th trucks (plus, I would've struggled to fit a smaller pinion!).
Fact is, the motor has never exceeded 140F even on a 30C day, and even though the fan is always on (being a V1), the best temp reading I could get wasn't more than 120. This is with punch control disabled, timing at low and brakes at 35%. And using the interal BEC with an Ace DS1015 servo...which really draws some current. I absolutely LOVE it.:yipi: |
My V3 is working flawlessly as well, on a 16Lb Maxx.... Just love the programming part of it...I'm pretty much converting everything that uses 6S or less to the MMM Escs.. even my touring car will use the MMM ESc.. LOL castle makes great ESCs... For the price of the MMM, it's just a bargain... I use to spend $200+ on 61 Amp EScs... and $400+ for 129 Amp Escs... so the MMM is awesome!
|
My V2 has been working flawlessly as well for a year now. I have always used 6s and it has done service in a 3905 E-Maxx, E-Revo, and now an LST2 conversion with the 2200 motor geared for around 50. It's a beautiful thing really!
|
My Monster has been abused and is still going strong. It's sitting in a ~16 pound truck currently geared for about 50 MPH on 4s lipo with Losi 420 wheels/tires. The fan comes on quite a bit but it's a trooper! I bought a new pinion to stress my setup less, but the MMM is solid as far as I'm concerned. I'm most-likely buying another one in a few months for another 1/8th scale conversion and maybe another one after that to replace my aging MGM (burned up the BEC last time I ran it :oh:).
