My Muggy on 6s *vid*

Finished off my tires on Thursday and got it on tape. This thing is insane on 6s! It's over-geared so the motor got toasty and the MMM's fan was on the whole time but the Turnigy lipos held their own.

Edit: YouTube already muted it, need to post it to Photobucket I guess.

Great vid! Doesn't look like a 13lbs truck when you see it driving around like that. How hot did the medusa get?

Unsullied_Spy 08.14.2009 08:29 AM

Thanks. The Medusa has no problem moving that thing around. 13 pounds with those lipos sounds about right, it's actually closer to 16 with my MA packs in there :surprised: I forgot my temp gauge but I'm pretty good at guessing by feel and I'm guessing 160-170, it was toasty. I left it on and just sitting still for a little bit for the fan on the MMM to cool it down and after 30-45 seconds of just sitting it was still on and blowing hot air out so it was definitely hot as well. Going by feel I'd say the Turnigys were around 100 degrees, very impressive.

riverat1540 08.14.2009 11:20 AM

Very nice, the backflip from a standstill is the ultimate test of power. im going to go with the turnigy batteries as well. im happy to see the results im seeking. and the 1521 1y 1577kv should run cooler and let me get a good gear range. sweet vid, i think that the biggest thing ive ever seen do a backflip off the line

zeropointbug 08.14.2009 12:35 PM

Nice vid man.

You still owe a Forza date.

Foxracin 08.14.2009 12:37 PM

Seems to have plenty of power. lol Cool video.

sikeston34m 08.14.2009 02:14 PM

Wow! That 80mm Medusa hauls butt!

What version of the Turnigy Lipos are you running there?

I just picked up a pair of 2S 30C packs, but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet.

suicideneil 08.14.2009 04:00 PM

I like the barrel roll into the camera, nice bit of editing

Defintately an impressive setup though, got tons of power.

bdebde 08.14.2009 06:53 PM

Very nice... Good soundtrack too.

Definitely, torque and traction is everything. I'm still awe-stricken at how this gargantuan truck can be tossed around like a rag doll with that motor. Your 1521 on 6s will be all you need. It's larger, more powerful, and more efficient so you should be golden.

Thanks. I'm still on for Forza

Definitely a power house, I wasn't able to push it to full speed in the space I had and it was still moving along just fine. I'd eyeball it at 50+ in the vid, plenty of speed. With that 16T pinion I should be able to get close to 70 though.

It's an incredible motor for the price, such a shame Medusa isn't making RC motors anymore. I think I paid around $140 for it and IMO it out-performs a comparable Neu 1515.

Those are the new 5AH 25-35C lipos. Not the top-of-the-line packs but they were about $40 each and so far they seem to be excellent packs for the $$.

Yeah, you get a good shot of my chassis brace  The camera shut off when I hit it but I grabbed the last frame and held it for a second for effect.

Certainly impressive, but I'm not going to be running it on 6s very often. On 4s with this gearing it still runs hotter than I'd like, I'm dropping down 2T on the pinion and running it on 4s until I want to shred another $50 in tires

Thanks, Shinedown rules! I thought the title was fitting as well.

snellemin 08.14.2009 08:52 PM

loved the slomo at the beginning. Nice power!

magman 08.14.2009 08:59 PM

Cool vid..and I also like the standing slow motion back flip at the beginning

BL_RV0 08.14.2009 09:08 PM

Power!

jayjay283 08.14.2009 10:32 PM

thats meaty, I love my muggy, everything else is lame in compairison, sorry to all other rcs, I own lots of them and they blow next to the muggster. I run the castle system on it usually on 5s but 6s if some retard feels he needs to see it faster than 50. I let the neighbor drive it and he melted the diff/spur and all. Thinking about a slipperential for it but I will wait till Lucias gets his truck and is cool before I spend my paypal $ =) It looks so cool with those wide azz tires but put some lighter/skinnier truggy ones on it and mine never got warm

eovnu87435ds 08.15.2009 03:13 AM

sweet! its like my crt.5 but 3x the size! it also has a medusa in it

drkdgglr 08.15.2009 03:55 AM

I think this is a crt.5 with a Muggy in the background:

Finally got around to making a YouTube-friendly one.

nitrostarter 10.19.2009 08:50 PM

The video in the first post isn't working for me.

Just watched the Youtube video. Nice running there!!! Seems strong as hell! I'm assuming the body flew off at 1 point?
Look at the way those tires balloon and wobbly!

Unsullied_Spy 10.19.2009 08:54 PM

Could be photobucket acting up again, I haven't moved it or anything.

Thanks! That Medusa is a beast of a motor but I am thinking of replacing it with something else, that Castle 1717 motor would be perfect if it ever comes out. The body actually broke off, the pins broke through what was left of the body mounts, and now the body mounts are almost totally worn through  I blew off a pretty good-sized chunk of tire at one point in that video, just couldn't handle the power anymore. I ran it again at my LHS on 6s and the remains of that tire basically exploded under the power.

Freezebyte 10.19.2009 08:55 PM

Jesus, you damn near blew out your right front tire with that first little stunt! Makes me wonder if my tires will hold together on 6S on "Frostbyte"

Unsullied_Spy 10.19.2009 08:59 PM

The right-front is the one that blew out later in the vid. I caught it on tape but it was hard to see and I think the photobucket video is the only one that has it (gotta watch kinda carefully, it blew during a wheelie going towards the camera). I'm very impressed with the stock Losi tires though, I abused the crap out of those things for about a year before they finally blew out, I was so impressed that I bought some LST XXL wheels and tires to replace them.

Your tires are newer so they will hold up longer, but that thing is going to have some BRUTAL power on 6s and will significantly shorten the lifespan of your tires.

Freezebyte 10.19.2009 09:01 PM

Awell, not planning on 6S till next spring

Unsullied_Spy 10.19.2009 09:04 PM

The sun from the last 2 days melted most of the snow down here, but it's been raining all day. Bashing season is pretty much over for us, unless we pick up brushless snowmobiles \m/

When its too cold to turn the steering wheel, i'll call it quits. Of course, it will be a cold day in hell if the Bobcats can beat the Griz

Unsullied_Spy 10.20.2009 05:28 AM

I run all winter as well, but usually just my Rustler because I know the MM can handle some snow. Cold day in hell indeed, at least one University in this state focuses on academics rather than sports

drkdgglr 10.20.2009 05:59 AM

I just noticed the Muggy isn't listed on losi.com anymore..

Unsullied_Spy 10.20.2009 06:56 AM

:gasp: Uh ohh, hopefully they aren't discontinuing it. It can't come close to the thrill of my Baja, but it is definitely one of my favorite RCs. It really is a great truck, I hope they keep making them and they're just re-designing it right now.

riverat1540 10.20.2009 11:23 AM

i should have a working mamba monster today. im now running the same motor as u. I got a steal of a deal on it, 40bucks shipped on ebay about 2months ago. im waiting for the 1717 as well or a good deal on a 1521 1y whatever comes first. i have also had issues blowing front tires, the side walls just give way, at least i know im good at glueing them and that dynamite ca glue is sweet stuff. after ripping 3 tires i decided to try wrapping some spiderwire 20lb fishing line around the front tires in about 4 places on both of them. they even balloon between the string but not nearly as bad and with all 4 done that way i can actually top it out with the medusa and a 14t pinion, i normally just run an 11t though as it keeps things cooler. i can sure say it is amazing to see that thing top out i dont know how fast it is but i can tell u its crazy if i crashed at those speeds there would not be much left. but i had to see what it could do:party:

Unsullied_Spy 10.20.2009 05:02 PM

What kind of speeds are you getting on the 14T? I was running a 16T (smallest I had) in the video, including tire ballooning that's geared for about 90 MPH on 6s  I ran it a fair bit like that and it ran just fine as long as I didn't run much longer than ~10 minutes, then as soon as I went down to a 14T and 4s I turned the ESC on and it started blowing smoke.

JThiessen 10.28.2009 11:09 PM

I've been considering picking up a Muggy roller - they seem to be dirt cheap right now. And yes, they are no longer listed on the losi site - you have to go in through the product support page to get to the page for the muggy now.

Maybe the Ten T will have a bigger brother....

Where do you find most of your Muggy parts, etc at? Anyone make any aftermarket chassis for it? I'm kinda curious how close a fit the 8T chassis parts might be?

I hear its gonna be a VERY cold winter in Missoula....!!!

bdebde 10.28.2009 11:31 PM

Innovative-rc makes a 4mm very tough chassis for the muggy, losi also make a hard anodized one that is a lot better than the stock one. I don't think any chassis parts from the 8eight-T will fit. Diff cups and internal (spider) gears are the same. Many chassis parts from LST2 fit it though, as well as most of the suspension parts (pretty much a LST2 on truggy chassis).

ebay for cheap parts.

Its always farking cold, what are you talking about? You've been in WA to long

Unsullied_Spy 10.29.2009 02:11 AM

I use eBay and Amainhobbies for my parts. The only upgrade I'd do out of the box (if I were to buy another one) would be the RPM arms with adapters (needed to fit properly, they're made for the original LST) and replace the RPM turnbuckles with Lunsford titanium turnbuckles. Otherwise it's extremely tough out of the box and is, aside from my Baja 5B, my most favorite RC. I managed to crack a diff case and stripped the front diff after ~20 hours of hard use, replaced with aluminum LST cases and have nearly 200 hours on them and all I've done is take them out 1 time to re-grease the ring and pinion. It simply stands up to all the punishment I can throw at it and comes back for more. I really like the big wheels, too. I had considered going to regular MT or Truggy wheels but it's just not the same without massive wheels and tires, I got some off a LST XXL on eBay for about $45 shipped and they look and perform great. My MMM should be back sometime next week, I'm anxious to get it up and running again.

If Losi is discontinuing the Muggy, they had better be replacing it with something better. It's a great truck and if it were cheaper (roller) and had tougher A arms it would be the Truggy to get for bashing.

drkdgglr 10.29.2009 02:12 AM

innovativerc made an e-chassis for me, I highly recommend it. It's not listed on his site, so you'll have to ask for it. It is desgned to work with the rc-m mount and battery tray. The chassis has no open holes and that really helps keeping the dirt out.

Unsullied_Spy 10.29.2009 02:19 AM

What's the deal with these aftermarket chassis? I haven't had an issue with my stock chassis and I've abused this thing mercilessly. What's the advantage (aside from fewer chassis holes) to dropping ~$100 on a new chassis?

drkdgglr 10.29.2009 03:46 AM

I guess it really depends on your driving style&location. Look at it this way: I never had an issue with the arms so why upgrade to RPM?

I only drove the Muggy in the sand, and that stuff really gets everywhere. To me $100 doesn't sound bad if it'll keep sand away from the electronics, center diff&gears. You could use tape to cover up the holes, but a big truck like the Muggy deserves a big chassis:

JThiessen 10.29.2009 01:25 PM

So for you guys that are familiar with both the Muggy and the LST - How about taking an LST and putting the Muggy drive train (center diff) in it...feasible or not?? Is the Muggy bigger than the LST/LST2? I found an decent looking LST roller locally for 80 bucks - and I'm looking at a Muggy roller for 125 shipped but the Muggy looks like its not in the greatest shape.

Yes it is possible to put center diff in LST2... HERE; and they are same wheelbase, but muggy a bit lower.
