Nice! I been wanting one. I settled for a 94 Toyota 4WD Pickup.
Need some new shoes on there! |
Those MTRs will last for a while, they've got decent tread right now. I want some KM2s though. Saw another TJ with them today and I was envious.
Toys are good! No removable top and they're hard to keep low with a stock frame. Mine was pretty low though, but it had cut fenders. Thanks for the comments guys. |
Always good to see folks with Jeeps who're willing to actually drive them how they're meant to be. Remember, pavement is for minivans!
(Mine's a '80 cj-7, original 304 v8 (rebuilt at least once), dual exhaust, holley carb, edelbrock intake, various other mods, 4" suspension lift, 33's, and a soft-top that I never put on - it only sees the sun now!) Tony |
Any pics of the CJ7? I was looking at those too, but couldn't find one in good shape around here.
|
I'll find some to put up. It's in overall good shape. Couple small rust spots. The inside is all rhino lined, so I can just hose it clean. I do need to get around to painting it though (it's, uh, purple & yellow... was when I bought it, I've put the $$ into it elsewhere)
|
It's all good, but you don't have to lie about the purple and yellow. I know you painted it like that the first week you had it. :mdr:
|
Hah, no, it really was this color when I bought it... 10 years ago this year!
Here's probably the best pic I could find of it. Haven't done anything big to it since this was taken. Don't have an under the hood shot, it's dirty enough under there right now I'm not going to bother, either! http://home.comcast.net/~kraegar_ind...p/MVC-219F.JPG When I do paint it, I think a dark candy apple red & black trim. |
You weren't kidding on the paint! Red and black would look great on there.
|
Anyone want a large and lengthy update on the Jeep?

Like this :mdr: I did front and rear hah
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1886.jpg |
indeed man.. lol
|
Yup, tore off that crappy front bumper and side steps, flat fendered the front, ripped out he stock airbox and threw on a cone filter, swapped in a HP30 front axle, and found a spare 231 transfer case with SYE for cheap.
Thinkin about throwing a set of FJ80 axles under it... |
should be a pretty solid ride man! i like the black..
|
Thanks! It's the opposite of my last TJ, I like this one a lot.
|
Time for an update...
Started messing around with the transfer case and found out why the levers weren't working - they weren't hooked up. The previous owner put a drop kit on it and apparently didn't know how to install it. I'm at a loss trying to figure it out myself, it doesn't make sense. Seriously, as an engineering major, it doesn't make sense. So I'm going to use a rod through the original tcase opening to push and pull the lever when engaging 4wd. Oh, and 4wd low works gooooood :D First time with 4lo in the TJ, I'm excited to get a couple spares and start wheeling. Onto the future plans... Picked up a '91 FJ80 front axle. 4.10 gears, 63.5" WMS, Hi pinion 8" third member, beefy everything. These are bigger versions of the regular Toyota mini truck axles. They're wider and bigger in all the right places. If I manage to explode the ring and pinions, I'll make a hybrid 80/9.5 axle using a FJ62 center chunk or go to a Dana 60. I think it will be a while before I get to big enough tires to blow apart these things. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1893.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1894.jpg I'm planning to run a Dana 300 with cable shifters, twin sticked, coming through the stock Tcase lever location with as little modification as possible. There's a good chance I'll have to have a 1" body lift or make some cuts to the sheetmetal but we'll cross that road when it comes. I know for sure I'll have to reroute my exhaust, get a new rear driveshaft (going with a Toy CV with flange) and get my front driveshaft shortened (possibly not) with a flange adapter. I'd rather keep my front shaft the same length so I can sell it for all TJ owners if I stretch the front. I want to get 2" out of the front and the rest out of the rear to make it 100" wheelbase when I finally longarm this rig. Plans for the rear are one of three options: Zuk 12 bolt rear (cheap but random and doesn't match the front), Tacoma rear, or full float FJ80 rear. The 80 rears are rare and can be expensive. The Taco rears are versatile and plentiful. The 2wd V6 axle shafts are 5 x 4.5 Jeep pattern so I could run those in the back with the HP30 front until I swap in the new front. Then I swap in 4x4 shafts and I'm good to go. Leads me to my next point, which is room to grow. Picked these up for cheap. 37x12.50x17 MTRs at 50% http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1896.jpg Started on a stubby front bumper that doesn't increase my approach angle. It's merely for protection and deflection purposes, not a permanent solution. It's the first time I've welded something significant with this $100 Lincoln I found on craigslist. It worked pretty good, used 6011 rod and got some good arcs. I'm also using this time to get my welding skills back since I haven't used them in 5 years. I'll let the pics speak for themselves mostly. If you have any questions, just ask. regular stock, 1/8" thick I think. I got it for $5 so whatever http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1892.jpg Jig http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1898.jpg design http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1899.jpg Drill holes, make sure they're square http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1900.jpg Drill out for bolts http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1901.jpg |
first cut
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1902.jpg ready to bend http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1903.jpg bent (adding material later) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1905.jpg Ran out of cutting wheels so I had to resort to welding http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1904.jpg pics of welds, I know there are weld nazis everywhere. It's just a bumper, but I thought this was decent for being rusty. It was a 2nd pass since I didn't like the first one at all. Good penetration and heat. Burned 'em in at 60amps. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1906.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1908.jpg Cleaned up, need to add the lower part once I cut out the back of the bumper to fit over the frame. The sides are there to protect the sway bar and hopefully deflect the rig away from whatever I hit. I'm sure if the object is strong enough or I come down with enough force, it will bend or break, but it will do for now. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1909.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1910.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1911.jpg |

I should have joined the Air Force so I can have more free time for myself. Good job.
I'm thinking of taking back with me a 1997 40 year edition of the Land Cruiser. |
Thanks! I'm not active anymore, Guard now, going to school on the GI Bill.
Are those the ones with the elockers? FJ80? Out of the box, they're pretty great rigs. |

I currently have a 99 4runner with an elocker in the rear and an ARB locker in front. Unfortunately, it's in storage until I finish my tour of duty here in Japan next year. |
When do you come back? If you do bring home a FZJ, slap a spare set of axles in the back for me :mdr:
Your 4runner sounds like a good rig already, so that's a tough call. It's already locked and it looks like it's pretty clean, but I wouldn't turn down a FZJ diesel! |
Quote:
The 4runner in my avatar is my offroad and highway rig. I have a set of 285/75/R16 BFG K/O for offroad only. FZJ diesels are the best in my book (3.0 turbo diesel). However, it will cost a lot of money to make it US compliant. |
Wow, that's still 11 months out. I'm sure it will pass quickly, I counted down the days until I could leave Idaho...that place is a $#!thole.
You should buy one cheap there and just wheel the piss out of it til you come back :mdr: |
Yeah I can't wait :p Hahah we'll see how it performs, I'm sure it will be astounding. Started the 8.8 swap tonight...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1949.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1950.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1951.jpg straightened the bracket http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1952.jpg new vs old http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1953.jpg clean slate http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1954.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1955.jpg this didn't line up, had to hack it off http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1956.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1957.jpg I'll weld it back on later http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1958.jpg |
this is as far as I got tonight, more tomorrow
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1959.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1960.jpg |
More progress tonight. Had a couple small snags but nothing big.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1968.jpg Got everything in there, not all the way buttoned up but on all fours again http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1969.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1970.jpg pinion angle, might need to take out those pan spacers http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1971.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1972.jpg I measured the Jeep again and it's lower in the front but seems to be the same in the rear. I might have to put a 1" coil spacer up front to even it out. I have the hardtop and spare on there and it's still higher than the front I think. I'll measure everything again when I get everything done. |
Taking out the spacers on my belly pan seemed like an easy 45 min task. Not so much. One of the nuts that is inside the frame came loose and was just spinning with the bolt. Thanks previous owner
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1976.jpg Tried a sawzall...ate FOUR of my blades and only cut half way through. wtf? Must be a grade 8 bolt! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1977.jpg Busted out the grinder and cutoff wheel...got that sucker off there. Also got the insert out so I can put a new nut in there if I can find the part and order one. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1978.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1979.jpg Where I left off http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1980.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1981.jpg Goodies http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1974.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...p/HPIM1973.jpg |
