g2r motor/controller
hi, i'm new here. i've been reading all the posts i can about all the motors and controllers. i will be getting a g2r rolling chassis soon and have a few questions. which motor to smoke all the nitro revo, t-maxx, and hellfire guys at local track? $300.00 for motor is limit. someone recommended a lehner xl2000, so i can use lipos. what about controller? the same person recommended a bk 20120. price is more than i'm willing to give up. $300.00 is my limit for controller also. what about the 12020. almost same thing, right? please help. i can't wait to run with the nitro guys. thanks!
a lehner 1940/6 would be a good motor and the differance between the 20120 and the 12020 is that the 20120 is a micro car controller and has more tuning options.
how many cells are you going to be running??? welcome to the forums by the way |
Welcome to the forums - You will definately find your answere to your questions here. Many knowledgeable people here. And then me too - LOL
i'm not sure. i want to run a setup thats really fast and would let me beat the nitro guys on a huge track. i know lipo for sure. i don't know about series or parallel wiring for batteries.
Welcome to the RCM forum!
Well, BL, especially in combination with Lipo, will be superior to nitro on the track. 4S (14.4V) would already be enough. Many run 5S, but it is said this is almost too much power. If you really want to spend 300 on a motor, get a Lehner 1930 or 1940. But you will find plenty cheaper motors that still kill nitros. A nice and inexpensive (well, let's say not that expensive) setup would be a Wanderer 8XL on 5S Lipo on a BK Warrior 9920. This combo should give you 35 - 40mph with ease. As for Lipo in parallel: As much as you can afford! More P equals more mAh (capacity) equals longer runtime. How long are the races on your track? |
Look around and see some videos around. It will give you an idea of what runs how.
Welcome to the forums to. You don't need a 12020 esc for a xl2000. It don't draw enough amps constantly to need it. |
Hi tally, welcome to the forum,
Like Coolhand says, a 120A controller is not needed for the XL2000, if you've got 300 to spend on a motor, i would check out the LMT 19 series. or get a wanderer XL and you've got some money left to step up to lipo. It really is surprising what lightweight does. the watt/oz value gets better. and lesson 1 in brushless is that the power that the setup can deliver can never be higher than the power the batteries can handle. |
I run a 2000XL with a 7020. The controller never gets higher 120F even on a fairly warm day. I would agree with everyone else, for around $300 a 1940 would do an excellent job and kill some nitro a$$. :D
i would personally go with the lehner 1940 or possible a 1950 if you are willing to spend the extra, with the 9920. it would certainly be less than your $600 budget. that on 6s lipo would certainly be a very good combination.
that would be an awesome setup
thanks for all the replies guys. what is the diff. between the 1930 type motors and the "normal" lehners? also, how durable is the g2r going to be. sorry for so many questions, but what other upgrades will i need to race this truck with a brushless setup? thanks for all your help!
ok, the purple lehner motors dont have segmented magnets and wont be as smooth at slow speeds and are made in china instead of germany like the black ones. the basics get rather hot quickly. i had one and the speed was unreal but runtime wasnt to good and the motor and esc got hot. the 19 series is definately the way to go. if you dont really wanna dish out that much doe the wanderer xl is the next best thing. they run VERY cool and have gobs of torque and can take from 12 up to 18+ cells for most.
i would upgrade the diff cases and cups along with steel idlers and a strobe slipper. |
thanks for the info, squee. whats the diff between the 1930, 40, and 50 motors? also, does monster carry all the items you listed to upgrade? thanks again everyone.
p.s.- i'm not sure how long the races last, i'll find out in a day or so. the track holds motocross races as well as rc races, its huge. |
the diff between the 30's 40's and 50's is the length of the motor basically the longer the motor the more torque it can produce
im pretty the 30, 40, and 50 means the length of the rotor (not can) is 30mm, 40mm, 50mm. the longer, the more torque which means less heat, higher gearing with less rpms which equals to more power.
thanks stampy. from the posts here, can you mak a suggestion on the motor/controller?
i see the prices for the 30 and 40, what about the 50, and do you think the 50 would be in order to really stomp nitro? what brand, cell count, capacity, and style (parallel or series) lipo would you guys suggest? also where can i buy the lipos you suggest?
im shur mike can get a 50 for you but you might not need that much torque. the best lipos on the market right now are prolly the flight power evo20's and you can get them here www.duralitebatteries.com. id go with 2 3s 3700's packs and wire them in series for 6s 3700's hope that makes sence :027:
Mike can get you anything you need to upgrade your truck. he doesnt have everything on his site but you can just email or pm him if you need anything. you would probably need a 1940 or 1950.
sorry to beat a dead horse, but i'm ready to buy some of the items for the g2r build. the track i'll be racing on is big with 5ft tall triples. only the hellfires and lightnings can clear the triples. i need to know which lehner motor this project requires. i need enough power to clear the big jumps and still be able to control it when i hit the throttle. also advice on a controller would be nice. most say lehner 1940 or 1950 with a 9920. i just want to be sure i have enough power to clear the jumps because most of the nitro revos can't clear it and they are never in contention for a win. thanx again!!!!
im suspecting that you are going to use 6s lipos and if i was you i would go with a 1950 8 turn.
how long are your races going to be |
i'm not sure about the race length or which size lipos to use. your positive that the 1950 will keep up with the lightning and hellfire?
it will. the only thing is will the lightning and hellfire be able to keep up with you? i would run 6s lipo as well.
sweet! what else will i need for the build? already have spektrum, need motor, esc, servo, wheels/tires, body. i have lots of questions for mike, but my emails are getting rejected for some reason. is there a phone # that i can try? thanx.
Did you try pming him as well?
It may be hard to be as fast as them because you will be in front and faster. Hard to tell with them lagging behind. |
i tried pming him as well, yesterday. no reply yet. i'm so ready to dominate. need brushless, must have brushless.
I sent you a pm. YOu got it.
thanks coolhand, i'll try again in a day or so. i know he's probably got tons of messages to reply to so i won't bug him for a day or so.
Ok. If i chat at him between now and then i point him to the pm box. Or even to this thread.
it might take mike a day or two hes been pretty busy i would say with the forum growing as much as it is and all of the stuff being sold.
just to let you know what I got in my g2r is a feigao 10L and hacker comp with hitec 5645 servo locked trans in second gear, you can substitute 10L waderer and 9920 for the combo I got since the hacker comp is unavvailable
You should see a reply to your email later today, tally. :)
And welcome to these forums.
thanks mike. this forum is great!!!!
o.k last chance to change my order. from what everyone has told me i will order a lehner 1950/8 and a bk 12020 from mike. sold??????? also i will run 6 cell lipo.
sounds good. i think the 9920 would be ok although im not sure.
when it rips out your drive train you can sell it to me 1/2 price LOL
is it really going to kill my drivetrain?
Dont worry, it should last for a while if you dont go too hard on it.
easy isn't an option. i'll be racing lightnings and hellfires, so i need to know for sure. if i use cvd's, al. diff cups, al. diff housings, gmaxx tranny with steel idler, what else will strengthen drivetrain?
