Computer speakers

Im looking to buy a chritmas present for SPECIAL friend ( cough cough ). are these any good ?. Im not looking for the best & not the cheapest ones like i have . http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836101074 . I want some that i can just plug in . I dont want to have to install any software . She does'nt have any speakers now . Im just looking to get some . so she can use youtube for the music video's . Im looking in the $25 - $35 range if possible . The ones i linked to are a little higher .

BP-Revo 11.02.2009 06:59 PM

I'd get these...Logitech makes good stuff. Cheaper, and almost 2x the watts and you get an actual sub.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageG...2.1%20Speakers

I have the Z-5500's (totally different category, I know - but still Logitech) and a bunch of other Logitech stuff and all of them are great. I've never had a bad experience with Logitech - always great stuff for a great price, so I always recommend them.

Nard Cox 11.02.2009 07:04 PM

Same here, love Logitech.

I have a :
Logitech Media Keyboard Elite for 3 years now and it's still perfect (and I'm a computer geek).
Logitech MX1000 = favo desktop mouse
Logitech VX Revolution = favo laptop mouse
Logitech RumblePad 2 Forece Feedback = favo gamepad
Logitech Z-2300 (also other category but man this thing rocks for just a 2.1 system).

Back on topic, I know JBL makes decent car speakers (have a let of Limited Edition 150W RMS in my own car) can't say anything really about their pc systems although my guess would be that it will not be bad.

What do you want for your friend, 2.1 or 2.0, max costs?

wallot 11.02.2009 07:21 PM

for just youtube and other low quality sound source music any speakers will do especially with low quality onboard sound card.
also cheap 2.1 are waste of money

standard stereo speakers - http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_u...phileAV30.html or any from the m-audio line. Probably the best bang for a buck as far speakers for PC go.

Wallot that's a little to much for computer speakers for me .

Im looking in the $25 - $35 range if possible

wallot 11.02.2009 07:28 PM

We aren't looking to decode DTS master audio, it's just simple computer speakers. He linked some over-priced, cheap looking JBL speakers so I linked him Logitech.

Here we are looking at $30 and $40 speakers and you link us a $100 set of speakers then call what we are looking at "crap." Well duh, for 2.5x the price of course those speakers better make the others look like crap.

Sorry about my previous link hippie, I meant to link the actual product page, not the gallery.

Also not saying newegg had the cheapest price, but you linked from newegg so I linked newegg as well to keep things simple. Typically, I find amazon has the cheapest final price as long as you qualify for free shipping (I have amazon prime - so free 2 day shipping on almost anything).

But generally, Logitech products are superior at a lesser cost, which is why I linked one.

I have 2 G5 Laser Mice (1 1st gen, 1 2nd gen), Pure-Fi iPod Speakers, Z-5500 Digital THX Ceritified 5.1 system (my dad has the Z-680's - predecessor to the Z-5500's), and Driving Force GT Wheel for my PS3. Each and every one of these products have performed fantastically and were all cheaper than the competition while offering more features too.

No problem BP . I did find the page . they look pretty good . The only problem is the computer desk she has does'nt have a lot of room . the sub may not fit down below .

I have a logitech wireless keyboard & mouse & love them . I thought about geeting here a board & mouse . But speakers would be better for as much as she uses her computer .

BP-Revo 11.02.2009 08:38 PM

Well, all I can say is keep the sub if you can. For the price range you are looking at, 2.0 and 2.1 systems can all be had.

However, with the cheaper systems, you can't rely too much on innovation and high-tech to get sound, you have to rely on basic output from the speaker itself, and there's no way a few puny 2 or 3 inch drivers are going to give you any substantial base, so might as well take the advantage of having a small 6" sub to give you some.

I here you . The one you linked is the leading canidate . If there is a decent leangth cable from the sub . I can just put it next to here desk .

suicideneil 11.02.2009 08:45 PM

Do what I did and cheat.

Does she own a Hi-fi of somesort with a pair of speakers (or more)? If so, just pickup a magic cable that connects the PC's audio out socket (little headphone plug deal) to the red and black Aux-in sockets on the back (or front) of her hi-fi. Just set the hi-fi to auxilary mode, then you can play the pc music/ sound through her hi-fi with much better quality and graphic equalizer controls han any of those horrid little speaker sets will.

I have a half knackered old hi-fi with a pair 50watt speakers, but they produce beautiful sound and rather good base, espaically given the Realtec audio driver software programme thingy with all its settings to play with....

Worth a thought anyway.

rchippie 11.02.2009 08:47 PM

Neil she does not . she has a complete dell system .

suicideneil 11.02.2009 09:13 PM

Meh, never mind then. What about a nice pair of headphones for ~$30...:intello:

rabosi 11.02.2009 09:24 PM

+1 for logitech. While the bass might be lacking, a $40 2.0 system should be ok for what you require. Just keep expectations reasonable.

as Neil said headphones would be best sound for the dollars

I dont think she would like the headphones idea . My expectations would be resonable . Im thinking about getting two of them . I have cheap sony vio speakers on my computer .

BP-Revo 11.02.2009 10:46 PM

hippie, as far as I know, Logitech is pretty good with their wiring. My Z-5500 system came with 8ft wires for the front speakers and 25ft wires for the surround speakers.

rchippie 11.02.2009 11:13 PM

I think they will be fine . The more i think about it . I can just mount the sub on top of the tower on the bottom shelf.

eovnu87435ds 11.03.2009 12:08 AM

I have a Creative Labs 2.1 system on my desk, and know a few people with the same one as I do. They are not the loudest, but they do produce crisp, clean sound, especially with a bit of playing around with the EQ

The current model 2.1 system, of good quality for a budget price
http://us.creative.com/products/prod...=16973&listby=

What I have:
http://us.creative.com/products/prod...&product=14096

Of the reviews of the A200 system that I have read, most of them say there is too much bass. Simple fix. when in iTunes, open the built in equalizer and click the bass reducer preset. that takes care of that.

I don't have much experience with Altec Lansing, but from what I hear, they also make some pretty good stuff
http://www.alteclansing.com/index.ph...uct_id=bxr1221

Of course, If you did want to go all out, or want to thank me for helping out, Bose is the way to go IMO.

BrianG 11.03.2009 12:21 AM

I'm kinda partial to the Logitech systems for the money. Simply the best bang for the buck. I have the Z-2200 system (2 speakers and a sub) and it's plenty loud and sounds very good for what it is. Price is above the $30 target though, but you're gonna get what you pay for for the most part.

And Bose? You mean "blows" right? As you can probably gather, I'm not too fond of them. They just use relatively crappy drivers with a mediocre amp, but in a properly designed box, and charge a premium. Their acoutiwave system simply uses a transition line enclosure design, which has been around forever. Fairly inefficient, but sounds good. A good enclosure can make a crappy driver sound great, and a bad enclosure can make a top shelf driver sound crappy.

Brian i was also looking at these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121014 . I read alot of the reveiws & they were all good . she doe'nt use her computer alot . so im not looking to spend a fortune . Two sets of these is less than $50.00 shipped .

shaunjohnson 11.03.2009 01:27 AM

i'm after a set of speakers for xmas...

i love the sound of the logitec speakers dad has, they are just 2x tweeters and a big bass.

any other suggestions for good speakers with good bass? i'm a big fan of good sound ;)

BrianG 11.03.2009 01:41 AM

I have the previous generation of these, and they're great. When I got them, they were $100 and also had a $50 rebate so well worth the $50 total price! The newer version (actually old since they came out in 2004) are too expensive at $164, but you may be able to find some elsewhere cheaper. This is probably what your dad has. A couple of gripes though: 1) the volume control scratches at very low volumes after about 1 year (could just replace the pot), 2) the bass, being in a ported enclosure (-24db/oct slope below the port frequency), doesn't dip low enough for movies IMO, but fine for most music, and 3) mids are a little lacking.

rchippie 11.03.2009 01:52 AM

Im not paying that much .

BP-Revo 11.03.2009 01:54 AM

Creative makes some pretty solid stuff too. I love their sound cards, but that's something else. My brother has some creative speakers and he seems more than happy (they aren't a 5.1, but they were great for the price).

The speakers I replaced with the Z-5500's were actually Altec Lansings. It was a 4.1 system...from 10 years back. 3inch drivers with a downfiring 6inch sub. As long as you didn't turn the volume up too much (sub would start to fade since it wasn't powerful enough), the system produced fantastic sound and the only thing that was going out was my volume knob - after 10 years! (And given, I had left these on overnight many many many times). At lower volume levels there would be a bit of crackle/static but some playing with the computer volume output and the knob and I could get rid of it no problem.

If their speakers now are anything like those speakers, then they are of fantastic quality. Given, those 4.1's did cost 100 bucks back then. I still use them now. They are my 'iPod dock' for my bedroom.

rchippie 11.03.2009 07:59 PM

I bought these speakers for my special friend . since she does not have any speakers know & does not use here computer that much, these should be more than enough for her . Plus they had free shipping .

http://cgi.ebay.com:80/ws/eBayISAPI....m=350261728795

Now i have to decide what set to get for my self .

I just bought these for myself.

Good choice on your own speaker set. :mdr:

I think that was a smart move. If she hardly uses her computer then you might as well have just wired up anything that works lol...

What's_nitro? 11.03.2009 10:03 PM

I think you made the right decision for her speakers. They'll sound fine for what she needs them for. IMHO you should've bought yourself something a bit better! :mdr:

Personally, I'm an audiophile- and as such I have the Z-5500 system. AAMOF I'm blasting it as I type this! I got a sweet deal on eBay....

I did'nt want to spend a lot for speakers . The speakers i have know are sony vaio's . There power rating is 0.5w per speaker . So with these speakers being 5w per sattilite & 15w for the sub . They should kick the crap out of the current ones i have .

What's_nitro? 11.04.2009 02:22 AM

I'll bet you've forgotten what bass sounds like after listening to the Vaio speakers for so long!

jayjay283 11.04.2009 03:14 AM

I have the logitech z-4, for 4 years they are nice looking and great bass, I had the cops come twice for them, don't play "baby got back when drunk" 5-0 was there in 20 minutes.. They are at Target for $83 today, I bought pair about $129 4 yrs ago at circuit city, no wonder they went out of business.

I never cared for bass all that much before, but if you have the right setup, oh man does it add an experience - to both music and movies. I just found that out a few months ago.

BrianG 11.04.2009 08:55 PM

Bass ads that visceral response that can't be explained. Some people tend to go a little overboard sometimes - like those kids running deck power for their mids/highs in their car, and 2000w on 4x 18" subs for the bass.

I find that whatever power you have for the mids/highs combined, X2, is the amount I like for the bass. So, if I have 100w rms X 2 for the main speakers, I like at least 400w for the sub(s). And I prefer a ported box tuned perfectly.

Brian the setup i bought has 5w for each of the Satellite speakers & 15w for the sub . That should be plenty for watching youtbue & other site's like that . .

BP-Revo 11.04.2009 09:09 PM

Seems like Brian has gone into car territory. Personally I think car audio is completely different from computer/home theater audio.

Cars typically don't need all that much power due to the confined space... My Bose system in my Infiniti is only rated to something like 280watts last I checked but god can it put out some serious levels of sound. Bass isn't quite what I would like it to be (doesn't do all that well on the super low frequencies as there isn't any real sub but rather a pair of 8" 'subs' on the rear deck).

The Logitech Z-5500 I have in my room that I use for my computer and PS3 (for both games and movies) so it's computer speakers and mini home theater is absolutely mind blowing. Half volume when playing songs out of my PS3 (slim, btw, which IS able to output bitstream DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD) and I can't even stand in my room it's so loud, but audio clarity is still perfect so if I stand downstairs it sounds great.

I think i will be satisfied with the system i bought for myself, judging by all the reveiws i read on newegg .

BP-Revo 11.04.2009 09:24 PM

Yeah, I was just saying about the vast difference between home/computer speakers and car audio.

Even though I have such great setups at home, I use my built-in speakers on my laptop while at school. Having good stuff is great but sometimes "what works" is good enough for me. I have Bose Headphones if feel I need good audio - but those only go on my ears when I play CounterStrike.
