Brushless specs for 1:5 scale.
 

Hi !

I am planning to make brushless conversation to 1:5 Nutech buggy. The car is very big so I am not sure what brushless motor and controller I should use on it.. I don't have been played with this scale of cars before so I need some help with it..

I have been think that LMT 2250 would be good choise to this heavy-weight car, do I am right or do I need maybe bigger motor or something ? I have about 600$ budget with motor so what I can get with that money ?

And what controller should I buy if I want to try bigger batteries than 6S lipo's ?

I have heard that normal rpm rate in this 1:5 scale cars is about 20k , is that right information ?

If you use the mechanical breaks, then there are a number of boat or plane escs that will work fine, say upto 12s & 120-200amps as a rough specification. Some of the large flat escs on hobbycity.com would be good, or if you wanted a better 'branded' esc, then the Castlecreations ICE escs would be excellent- depends on your budget really. The 22xx motors should be plenty big enough, they are comparable to Neus 22xx series I believe, so something that can produce 2000watts of power or more (peak/ maximum) should do the trick nicely.

And yes I will use mechanical brakes. I would buy castle ice series controller because I have good budget on this project and I don't want to smoke anything.

Which motor would be better to my use - LMT 2250 11 turns or Neu 2215 1Y ? They have same rpm rate so difference is not big, neu is 4 pole motor and LMT is 2 pole but I have heard that LMT have still good amount of torque aswell. Price is about the same, but the neu have bigger shaft.

Both look pretty nice.

If the LMT only has a 5mm shaft I would go with the Neu instead, and the 4 pole rotor should help it to produce more torque. I would personally go with the 2215 2.5Y on 10-12s lipo.

Neu 22xx motors are rated to handle 40,000 RPM, but if you are running enough voltage to get that kind of RPM out of them I would suggest dropping the KV so you run fewer amps. A 2215 should be able to handle 2,500 - 3,000 watts without a problem. RC Cars are more about bursts than continuous, so 5,000 to 6,000 watts burst wouldn't surprise me.

Castle Creations is working on a new ICE controller that will handle up to 12S (100A, I believe) so that should handle the 2215 fine as long as you run plenty of voltage with a lower KV.

Yeah, the LMT have weird kind of shaft in that scale of motor. Maybe the neu is better choise.

I am not sure how much the rpm's should be in 1:5 scale car but I think that castle's ice series 12S controller and low kv motor would be good choise as you said, with 10 or 12S lipo batterys.

What is a good place to buy neu ? I am not also sure where I can get 8mm bore pinions, if I am right Mike can sell some ?

Mike does indeed sell 8mm bore pinions, they would be an excellent choice due to their special hardening process, and Mike has excellent customer service.

There are several places to get the larger neus, mainly boat and plane online shops, though you can order them from Castlecreations (they are the USA distributor for Neu motors I believe):

Looking around, there are few places with the neus in stock, especially the larger ones, as they are made to order usually, so the seller places an order with neu who then make the motor and ship it to the seller a few weeks later, then they ship it to you; quicker and cheaper to go directly to Castlecreations and order it up.

I wouldnt like to recommend an exact motor (kv or length), but the 2215 seem to be good for lighter 1/5 scale, and the 2230 for the heavier models, or models requiring higher top speed ( able to gear them higher as they produce more torque ).

Good luck with your project, I do like seeing the big 1/5 scale vehicles being built up- more of a challenge compared to normal 1/10 and 1/8 stuff :yes:

Which exact model buggy will you be using- they all look really nice quality, especially the Pro version with the alloy parts- about as close to a Hpi 5b as you can get looks-wise, though with a more truggy-like chassis = more room to mount stuff. I like....

I like the M8 buggy layout of this car, the price of thunderbolt is not high and there is alot of room to make nice and clean conversation.

The quality of the parts seems to be good and there is an center differential in this car, I really like it.

I have about 2200$ to go with this conversation..

Maybe the neu 2230 is better for heavier 1:5 conversations like this than 2215 ? I am not sure yet.

which ESC would you use on the 2230?

Maybe the castle creation's hv or phoenix ice series controller like phoenix ice 100 or phoenix hv-110 ? I am not sure yet, controller which can perform enough ampers with low kv motor and high amount of battery cells.

a neu 2215 @ 600kv, a hydra 240hv(50v version)and 10-12s lipo will do the trick.

Price is 540$.. Thats alot of money, and the controller seems to be water cooled ? I don't need water cooled version, the controller need to handle 10-12S lipo's, and enough amps, those are only recuirements. I will use mechanical brakes in the project.

The motor will pull a lot of amps to push such a heavy Car. There Really Are few esc that can handle it while staying cool. Water cooling can be modded to air cooling.

I used a Hydra 180HV boat controller with a 2215 Neu motor on 8s and 10s Lipo. The ESC was not modified in any way and never got any warmer than "barely warm" to the touch(using mechanical brakes). I think the 240HV is overkill.

Ok. Nice to know.Im looking for a usable esc my self. Ive heard that some put computer heatsinks on, and thermal compound, also intended for computer use. I Think its a simple way of adding a little bit of extra air cooling to a "boat esc".

That sounds pretty good, but I am looking for controller less than 350$, the car's price is about 900$, batteries price is about 160-200$ and the servos and other stuff about 100$, and motor 530$ + shippings and taxes to europe for all stuff.


I will get motor mounts and other extra parts free from my good friend who can make some stuff with cnc-machine.

The controller should be in price 300-350$.

Now I have been thinking and planning about the Nutech Thunderbolt 2 brushless project and my decision about the specs are:

- Scorpion HK-4035 10-12S 4200W 560kv brushless outrunner with 6mm axle, the motor have weight alot ( almost 500 grams ) and it can take approx. 100a constant max.

I already bought it because the price was good and there is 2 years warranty.



Because the motor is huge and the power and torque is more amazing I need to make some extra hard parts from aluminum T6-7056 with cnc-machine to mount the motor safely to the chassis. The motor will be mounted with 2 tick metal plates which has 3 bolts and one pitch chasm to set up right clearance and pinion to each gears when changing the gearings to other circumstances.

The pinion will be modified to fit the motor with this style collet but only bigger one: http://www.megamotorusa.com/Images/G...f?id=644&bc=no . I will protect the motor from dirt with metal cage or filter material wich is protected with metal meshwork, then I assemble a 12V flex to the backside of the cage with another meshwork to reduce the possibility to damage the outrunner motor. The motor have 2 year warranty in my country so I don't modify it.

- Turnigy K-Force 120A-HV OPTO 5-12S Brushless ESC.

The price and quality of the controller seems to be quite good, the parameters are good enough and the overall size is very small so I will use it. I will also buy a programming box to modify the parameters easier. I will get a water proof metal box from my friend where I will put the controller and maybe the hv-ubec with top quality silicone liquid, the controller will be water proof and the heat problems are solved because silicone is good heat conduit. There is also a possibility to install an external heatsink inside the metal box.Because the controller doesn't have bec and its opto controller I need to use hv-ubec.

- Flightmax 5S 5000mah 30c lipo batteries x 2 to 10s batteries. The batteries are heavy weight stuff but its not problem at all because the motor weight is lower than the original one.


I already have futaba 2,4pm 2,4ghz radios with good futaba servo's, futaba s-9351 to brake and large scale s-3306 to steering. The receiver will be added to traxxas summit waterproof receiver box.

Well I am also maybe the first person in the world who does have Thunderbolt 2 done in brushless conversation :wink:

The price of the project is quite low when you think about what finedesingrc's or other brands conversations will cost and I hope that this project will work out some day, now I need to wait to get the 1:5 thunderbolt 2 from my friend with middle differential and mechanical brakes and other parts and stuff. The project is more challenging and funnier than 1:8 conversations because there is no available conversations on the market and there is things to do yourself. I like to build and make new cars, its fantastic when you get something to done yourself.
