Savage Flux Xl Build

Hello all, I really want to say how much I love this hobby...

A few weeks back I met a guy named Alex at the track, running a highly modified savage, His first time racing. He ended up blowing a diff or something like that, and knew no-one there. So i helped out by asking all the people that I knew for spares that might be useful. We eventually got him running, untill the silly expensive picco nitro motor decided it didnt want to cooperate- 425 degrees....(cough brushless..) So He stays in touch every once in a while, and i asked him to see if he could find me a savage rolling chassis to convert to electric (ie. the right way), A few days later he calls and says That he got all of the members on one of the savage forums to donate parts and is building me a truck!:surprised:

So hes got parts coming in left and right
Xl Tvps
radio box
a-arms
shocks
shock towers
bulkheads
steering assemblies
servos etc
New savage flux wheels tires and body
Wing and wing mount

Cant thank him enough.

But anyways, I had to sell all but one of my cars to finish off the build, I have coming from ebay:
Set of Savage xl Differentials, in bulkheads
Center Dogbones
Outer dogbones
Savage Flux slipper and spur assembly
Savage flux idler
Skidplates
Bumpers
And the savage flux motor mount setup

So far 145 into the build, parts should be arriving here today, but Alex still has the tvp's and things:intello:

It's great how usually everyone chips in to help others in this hobby, Awesome to hear !

Looking forward to seeing your new ride Ben.

What will the motor and power source for your new creation be ?

Good karma dude!

It always pays off. Always. Especially to people at the track

Have fun building!

BB16 if you don't mind i need a favor ! i have sooo many rc buds but i am the only one with brushless anything! i haven't been keeping up with anything but work but i need a motor for my truck and for the money the stock hpi flux motor fits my pockets. BUT i have always wanted a Neu motor so before i make a move which motor would you get ? Castle/Neu/or the Flux i can remember who makes what but the castle would be better because i have to buy the esc also but i'm not looking for speed i just want the cheapest of the good stuff. i will be replacing my charger and packs because all i have is 4s stuff and i figure 6s would be a good starting point. by the way i am running a 2 speed tranny and would like to keep it. it is built to last !

brushlessboy16 12.05.2009 07:34 AM

go for a castle 1518 :)

brushlessboy16 12.06.2009 10:06 PM

SOOO. finally

ARound 11 alex dropped off the parts for my truck. come to find out he left the transmission home, so no motor mount or anything.

Then sifting through the parts, i found that it didn't have any suspension hinge pins... So Try and find substitutes, wait and get them or make my own.. So i went down to the local hardware store and picked up 5/32 hardened steel rod. and made ALL my hinges with it.

I went through and installed the front and rear assemblies with the hex head hardware i got, installed skids and bumpers, made outer hinge pins, installed shocks, and started to put together my radio box.

I still need bearings for the steering bellcrank assembly, the upright posts for the belcrank and 2 toe links for the rear suspension.

Thanks, they are hardened steel so ill be surprized if they ever break(knock on wood)

Will do,
Trans should be here wendsday along with the other parts i hope

Love the xl chassis. Going to be a sick build.

brushlessboy16 12.07.2009 06:51 PM

Another Big up date. scavenging around the shop today i was trying to figure out a way get the steering installed.. My main problem was finding bearings to fit in the steering assembly. The answer came in the form of bearings from an old transmission out of an electric duratrax evader... Next came the steering posts. Found a great match with Center differential mounting posts from an ofna Hyper 7 which i had lying in the junk box.. One end was drilled for m3, and one end was larger with an m4 opening. Hacked off the large end and it made perfect steering posts, they bolted into the stock location and work great.

Lol.

I was looking through my yellow box with the bearings in my hand and saw the posts and though hes selling that car, he doesnt need em'

and your evader is long gone

If you guys havent figured it out.. Being impatient and creativity go hand in hand:lol:

thzero 12.08.2009 12:40 PM

Did you fit the engine mount onto the XL TVP chassis yet? If so, got any pics of it?

brushlessboy16 12.08.2009 01:09 PM

No the flux motor mount will not fit on the flux tvp's.

Im using some of the cross braces and building my own motor mounting system on top of it

thzero 12.08.2009 03:44 PM

Yeah I figured that it would not as someone already tried to do it and posted over on rcuniverse when the Flux came out, but it was a real hatchet job. Be interesting to see what you come up with.

BB i hear you can take parts from a flux tranny and upgrade a nitro tranny if so can you use a nitro tranny housing and fill it with you flux tranny parts ? if so i have one with a abused second gear your welcome 2 !!!
i'm starting to wonder should i have kept my FLM nitro chasis and tried to modifiy it to use the flux motor plate and mounts it would have saved me alot of cheese to use in other areas ! i need i need i need LOL !

Flm makes there own brushless conversion. You only need one gear to convert it to the locked single speed. I did this to mine.
Thanks but I got my trans in today.. If you have a wheelie bar I might need that:lol:

brushlessboy16 12.10.2009 10:31 PM

Im Basically remaking the large motor plate and braces as one peice, from 1/4in aluminum...

Winter sucks.. snapped a drill bit, Got that out, tried to thread a screw in, snapped the head off, drilled it out, then broke my m3 tap in the hole... cant get it out, so i ground it flush..

But. I mounted the transmission. roll bar, center driveshafts, rear toe links.

Had to improvise as I had no transmission output cups. Used 1mmthick aluminum sheet metal. Made a sleve for the transmission output shaft to fit the differential pinion drive cups..

It can sit on its 4 wheels by itself now!

I started with the FLM nitro chasis converted it with the kershaw stuff it Looked dumb stripped it put nitro stuff back on bought another savage roller when i picked it up it was FLM nitro chasis powdercoated black with kershaw mount and battery saddles. Now from this point i should have toughed it out and purchased ONLY flux parts like mounts, motor plate, and i would have saved money but i stripped and sold the nitro chasis cause i had one already and now i have the trannyforward setup. i kinda understand what your doing i have a bunch of aluminum chasis braces and some stuff i know will get the job done for you. If the tranny is fitting between the tvp's and you just need to mount the motor plate i have these half mounts FLM provide to mount various plates between the tvp's they sent like a few extra with the parts i have ordered over time. does the flux motor mount bump the tvp if you move it out to far ? or is it where the plate mounts go there's no frame material to mount to.

The flux motor mount does not fit the xl tvps plain and simple.

and I wish that the transmission was about an 8th of an inch lower, so i dont need to clearance the entire plate to clear the driveshafts

ASYSTEMERROR 12.11.2009 10:34 AM

so it would be easier to use the FLM Flux extended tvp's ahh a uknown~unknown ! i figure with the tranny and the tvps not matching up even close u might have a "heck" of a time working around them and when done will they take the same abuse ! i didn't think the kershaw stuff was bad it just seemed like i was pressed so thats why i didn't stick with it, i was really a good lipo and a pinion away from a test run. i had been eyeballin the new chasis for like a year now and since the flux had been out for a while that made 2 options that was better than the can sitting up so high on the chasis. i was looking at you spur and 44 sounds like a blast i have the 47/20 on my truck now but would like to use the 44 becuse at the moment i'm stuck with my current motor/esc @5s. i am considering locking my tranny because i need that servo for my DM-1 and reverse wouldn't hurt but i'm worried i might burnup my esc "LOSI Brand" before the holidays are over and i can get a MMM. when you get a chance shoot me a link where i can learn about the locking the tranny.

The more i look at the last photo i see you problem you have the motor sitting in the wrong place. i'm not sure how it fits in a flux but the pinion doesn't sit that low in my truck, it really sits off the side of the truck even with the 44spur it don't look as if i could have a tvp wall on that side. pics blow but you can see how they keep the motor plate off the drivetrain.

EDIT !!!
swap the tvps then cut the rail out on motor side use the flux motor plate and mounts, run the integy roll bar that mounts from tranny to rear shock tower (i can't wait to get on or make one their stupid simple and works great) but this would keep things stiff and rigged.

brushlessboy16 12.11.2009 01:19 PM

http://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums...ad.php?t=12117

I may move the entire motor plate down, below the driveshaft... I dont know if it will work, but it may..

If not- i need to cut more from the chassis.

ASYSTEMERROR 12.15.2009 10:49 AM

BB need a link for a place to get inrunner's with shafts front and rear. workin on sumthin !

Finnster 12.15.2009 12:13 PM

Before I decided I was going to do a 4ws setup, I was trying to do what you are doing with the XL chassis. I wanted to reuse my nitro revo motor mount and mount it on a skid plate which would be attached to the chassis braces. I few pita's as I remember:

The motor does sit that low, but as pic'd, its not elevated on a mount yet. Depending on the mount, it may have to sit higher, and maybe further out the TVPs (depends on gearing.)

The motor mount would sit close to the tranny. forget about getting to the motor's front screws to adj mesh. You need a mount that can slide sideways like a nitro mount. If you mount it on a plate and low to driveshaft, care has taken to get/make a narrow mount so it won't hit the axle. The chassis braces can kinda get in the way too (at least if I wanted to reuse my Revo mount using bottom mounted screws.)
Overall, it was hard to find a way to keep a 15 series inside the TVPs.

In the end, I decided to just go w/ a KD mount. For $20, it was far easier to do than making custom mounts and plates and BS. Also, it allowed me to tuck the esc and servo underneath and keep safe, altho at the expense of a high mounted motor.

ASYSTEMERROR 12.15.2009 12:56 PM

I think he's grinding somewhere getting the dough to get the FLM Flux Ext/Tvp's there the easiest, cheapest way to get the build back on track at 70$ he'll wastle that much in supplie's and time plus i think it's important that the truck stay's XL or it would be just like a flux always flippin it's lid.
With the extra support and LCG design the flm tvps is hard to pass up costing equal to stock tvp's and he could use all the flux stock stuff and be done. the kershaw mount is effective but it could cost you your motor with no rear support. the front end cap would be at risk on hard landings. i don't jump much but it just looked wrong to me so i just built a second truck and put my nitro back together.

brushlessboy16 12.15.2009 01:06 PM

I had to grind the Tvp around the transmission and cut peices off to get the motor to fit..

Pics later

How's the Rig comming along ?

brushlessboy16 12.25.2009 04:48 PM

Its comin..

Need to re-re-think my motor plate design. current one flexes- Got the correct center drive cups in and installed. Rc-monster pinion (leaps and bounds better than the HPI crap).

Merry Xmas

ASYSTEMERROR 12.25.2009 06:03 PM

sounds good i have decided before my DM1 even see's the ground i would convert it. i need a motor for my savage and it has to be a nice one i think i'm going to be getting a 100% Neu just for the sake of it, i have test ran the current setup indoors punch and wheel spin test it seems good but i'm not happy with the motor so the holiday's are almost done and i should have spare cash soon
