Cold weather test on MMM and Turnigy Lipos

It was -30 out, so I only ran for a little over 6 minutes, but I'm confident that lipos are just fine in the cold and the MMM's conformal coating over the PCBs is adequate enough protection. A body helps keep the snow down a lot, but my mounts are all broken. A bit tough to steer with your chin, but this thing is a BLAST to drive on the ice!

PBO 12.09.2009 04:07 AM

I can't even imagine what -30 is like, let alone driving a RC outdoors in it

It was 103 at my house yesterday

shaunjohnson 12.09.2009 04:39 AM

umm....you sure that is a muggy!!
it's f-ing HUGE!!!
nice rig and a good test :mdr:

It took about 2 minutes for the screen on my camera to start ghosting really badly, if you spray water on any surface at that temperature it will either freeze before it makes contact or freeze on contact, the oil in your car is so cold the starter motor has a hard time turning it over, the oil in your transmission is so cold it feels like the shifter is set in stone, and your clutch fluid is so cold that it doesn't release until ~2 seconds after you take your foot off it. Freakin' sucks here, we need to stop getting our weather from Canada and start getting Aussie weather.

Yep  LST XXL wheels/tires make a huge difference. I love this thing, all the advantages of a Monster Truck and a Truggy all in one great package. Too bad they discontinued it, I don't know what I'll do when parts get hard to find

i'll trade ya! our winter for yours. i LOVE the cold:yipi:
but our winters are mostly just 15*c average with sunny days and the odd bit of rain (makes good mudding/4wding season). last winter we had 2 weeks of non-stop rain but that was it, the rest of the time was dry:oh:
hmm....well i guess if you live at your place at the momentm the Nulon 40-70 engine oil is probably walk-able:lol: (it's only recommended for hot weather in 400,000km V8's as it is!)

the muggy was discontinued!!?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
i was looking forward to getting one. wonder how many parts they share with the LST (besides the obvious like diffs, and RPM has the arms covered)

Unsullied_Spy 12.09.2009 05:15 PM

The cold gets really old really fast. I'm fine in 20-30 degree weather but below zero blows. I run 5w-30 Mobil 1 and the stuff still gets really thick.

Sadly, they have been. I don't know how long parts will be available but sooner or later I'm going to have to switch to an LST XXL. The arms are about the only thing they share, maybe driveshafts (obviously not centers, but the wheel axles should fit). The diffs are a different ratio between the Muggy and LST, the LST has aluminum bodied shocks rather than the plastic Muggy shocks, the LST comes with aluminum diff cases where the Muggy comes with plastic. It's really unfortunate but they only sold it as an RTR and at $500 RTR they weren't too popular.

EDIT: The shock towers and body mounts are the same, forgot about those

shaunjohnson 12.09.2009 05:19 PM

so basicly you are looking at a chassis, CD mount and a couple of ring/pinions and they will be the rare parts?
the rest can be built from XXL or LST parts (also noticed they ditched the LST2 and kept the shatty LST1 aftershock:lol:)

Snowman 78 12.09.2009 05:24 PM

We are having the same cold temps in Denver as you. At 7am today it was -16 with a -30 wind-chill. I hate it

I'm mostly worried about the bulkheads, I think those are Muggy specific and last Summer I got in a bad crash and messed one up hardcore (hit so hard I bent the screws that hold the chassis brace on). Ring and pinion don't bother me, I can swap to LST ratios, the CD mount isn't going to break, the CD itself can probably be replaced with one from another company, etc. but I'm mostly worried about plastic bits that will become hard to find.

I don't understand why they keep the crappy Aftershock, they're very cheap but built worse than an E-Maxx. A Muggy roller would be awesome, I should E-Mail them and see what their plans are for the Muggy.

jayjay283 12.09.2009 05:37 PM

the bulks are the same as the lst2, I think the only thing besides the frame thats different and cant get an aftermarket part for is the towers. You can use the new era lst ones but it will alter your ride height and lid.

Unsullied_Spy 12.09.2009 05:43 PM

Well that's good to hear, thanks for the info!

Freezebyte 12.09.2009 06:01 PM

This cold weather is really sucking ass up here Unsull, I gotta go to the next griz game in it on Sat and im not looking forward to dressing up like a damn eskimo

shaunjohnson 12.09.2009 06:15 PM

aww man...it just started raining, was gonna go bashing today:whip:

just make sure you stock up on parts that arnt supported by aftermarket companies and cant be robbed from a similar platform:wink:

the aftershock is built worse that a Maxx truck:surprised:
i didnt know such a thing was even possible!

Unsullied_Spy 12.09.2009 06:23 PM

Yeah, I'm ready for it to be DONE! Maybe this year will be like last year and we'll get a break in February? The ground was dry last Feb, I even went out to Logan with some friends and blew apart some old typewriters.

With what? Sounds like fun, I love to blast shiat with my 9mm XDm. Were trying to get a CORR race system setup for next year up here, working on getting a website built so we can start some freaking racing in this damn state. Thinking about getting a Blitz and maybe a mini rock crawler lately...

Unsullied_Spy 12.09.2009 07:55 PM

Done with this weather! I've got a .40 XDm :na: but my 870 Express Super Mag packs MUCH more punch. The racing would be nice, my LHS is supposed to be moving into a place where we can get some race tracks built in the Spring. If you get some tracks in Missoula I may come up, but I have nothing race worthy (that bash spot of yours is epic though!)

Yes, for those who live in the warmer climes you know it's ungodly cold when the snow takes on a crystalline glint, and crunches under your feet with a most unpleasant feel..
Far more dangerous than being stranded in the desert!

You guys are getting slammed early, NY gets that shyt in Jan/Feb, and we also see temps down to about -40. Usually only 2 weeks or less if the gods are pleased.

Spy you are furking nuts, the hell were you using for gloves? It gets below about 15 and no way am I running anything but the damn furnace!

And those poor packs... little risky there!

Good they survived but uh, maybe a disclaimer is in order for the lipo rookies?

"Spy said it was OK and my packs puffed" :bad:

Unsullied_Spy 12.10.2009 02:37 PM

You know it's cold when the snow squeaks when you step on it

We've been getting odd winters the last few years. We got 1 snow storm in October, then didn't get snow again until November and this time of year it's usually very nice, 20-30 degrees average (perfect temperature for enjoying winter) and in Jan/Feb it usually gets this cold and nasty. I had some mechanics gloves on, they are just thin enough to fit in the trigger of my controller :yipi: My fingers hurt for a while afterwards, but it's fun!

I've been running lipos in the cold for 3 years now, had them completely covered in snow and run them in sub zero temperatures and never had an issue with them. Mind you, I keep them indoors at 60-70 degrees then take them outside and abuse the crap out of my truck (and being geared for 65-70 MPH on 6s lipo keeps things warm) then come right back inside so they don't really have much a chance to cool down much.

lutach 12.10.2009 03:35 PM

All the data I've seen on cold weather usage of any battery will show they don't perform anywhere near when the 25C temperature data. Voltage will drop a lot and the battery will have a difficult time supplying the power your set up might need. So be very careful.

phildogg 12.10.2009 06:51 PM

I noticed mine today were cooling off pretty quickly while running. It was around 38 deg. out and the lipos where at 73 deg. did a few speed runs with the tc4. When I checked the lipos after they were down to around 55 deg after running. so is it better to warm them before running?

redshift 12.10.2009 10:35 PM

55 is cold, you should be insulating the pack. A warm pack is a happy pack.... see these-

Credit where it's due I am parroting some of the best info on RCM thanks to many members who have a lot more time and money into this stuff. Adding to that my experience with lipos at different temps with both trucks and aircraft, and a good amount of info from other sources.

So huge thanks to all those who are so much more adept with Eagletree and in general, for their collective info on the subject!

I won't hesitate for a second to say RCM is an absolutely world class source of info for the hobby. :yipi:

redshift 12.10.2009 10:42 PM

Spy last winter I used some velcro, the softer 'loop' side on my TX, and those cheap brown cotton gloves. Otherwise the radio would be impossible to hold with those. But I had the same issue, any thicker than that and finger-no-fit... But just a little velcro on the back and front of the grip worked great.
