Big ass brushless savage
Well, the thread title pretty much sums it up. Here are some pics to get the build started.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...gasssavage.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...sssavageWB.jpg It has an 18" WB chassis. I am gonna run a Tekin T8 1700kv motor that I have here, probably off my MMM. However if I run across the Tekin esc I will try that since for the sensor. I am going to run it off 4s to start. If I think I need more I will go to 5s, however this is just a basher and I just need enough speed to get it off the ramps. Here are some battery location pics. This is two 4s 20c 4000mah packs that will be run together at 4s 40c 8000mah. Should have great run time. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5.../DualBatts.jpg I also have two of these packs, these would be run one at a time. Specs in the pic. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...rs/Bigbatt.jpg The packs are low in the chassis. I have a flux mount here and custom clamps on order. Should be a fun truck. Now I just need an 18" WB body, any suggestions? Also, I have some 40 series BL's with mashers, and I also have some CEN wheels/tires on the way. Not sure which ones will end up on her, probably the lighter of the two. Oh ya and I have some savage bulks with CEN arms, hubs, and cvd's on the way to give a shot. They have the HPI bulletproofs in them. And I also have some HPI bulletproofs for these if I decide to stick with the stock setup. Oh, and if anyone could be so kind as to help me with part numbers and or links to the parts needed to fix this trans up to flux single speed specs I would be forever grateful. :yipi: |
I like it! What tvps are those? Cost? I need to see how much longer that is over my flm setup, been waiting for a longer set of tvps to show up. Maybe a 5T body?
Might help in your gear search http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/in...646/100646.pdf Its early still for me so dont recall the numbers but you can also get a complete tranny off ebay. |
|
Here's a link to the chassis.
http://www.gcmachine.ca/index.php/rcstuff/desertboy I think I'm just gonna have to cough up the dough for one of those Firehammer MT body's. |
Ah that was the other body I couldnt think of, from what ive seen their kinda plain looking why I suggested the hpi one. If you still want the info for the center gears let me know and I can dig em up, I did the same thing a while back to mine I was just running a locked 2 speed gear set then opted to get the flux one.
Look forward to seeing it done any estimate to when it will be running? |

Btw, when you parallel batts, only the capacity increaes, not the C rating, so you will infact have 4s 20c 8000mah. Still plnety of power though as that means a total of ~160amps discharge rating.
KershawDesigns has the Firehammer MT body for a good price, along with the XTM Mammoth thats even better value: http://204.186.93.64/Bodies.htm I have the Mammoth body for my 18" WB TXT-1 project truck- perfect fit pretty much, and looks quite nice, based on the F-350 I believe. |
Very cool, thanks for the tip. That mammoth body looks perfect!
|
This now has me inspired, just measured my flm setup and its "15 from axle to axle to this one is 3" more in length. Anxious to see your thoughts after you run it.
Do you know one thing, will a mamba monster motor fit with the hpi motor mount? Reason I ask is you mention a custom mount... |
I think only smooth can Neu and the HPI castle/neu motors fit. Monster Mike custom makes some 42mm clamps that fit the Tekin T8 motors and any other 42mm motor I guess.
|
Any more updates? I am just waiting for a reply and should have mine on its way :yipi:
|
this mamoth body looks good. quite a project you have there. going to look good with some big tires that's for sure.
|
Curious how long did it take to get your tvps? Im around 10days into the waiting period and no update to when it might get here, im in Cali and have little experiance with stuff from canada.
Like to see more on this to! Especially with a body  |

Yea dont doubt it will show just had hoped it would have been this week.
Any chance of some shots with that body on it? Im still debating on a body but im waiting to have it together and see if a body I have here now will look ok on it but I will show what that is once its here and I can start a thread on it. One other thing did you get the skid plate with yours? He was out of em and says shouldnt need one since I got the battery floor but wonder how much is going to get up in there with the bottom open? I also got a motor mount from him that he milled out to fit a castle mamba monster motor, he will do this to any HPI motor mount if anyone needs it done not sure on price but if you buy the tvps he will do it for free if you send it to him but I got lucky and he had one there :yipi: |
Updates, more pictures ! ! !
|
i was very interested in this build but seemed to have gone no where... Some of his pics was whyi did this conversion myself...
|
I finially got around to it and ordered one myself yesterday.
|
have you seen my build up and videos with this chassis? I dont anyone apart from me has proper videos testing this chassis and showing the true potential of how it handles when serious torque is put through it.
This chassis is amazing! |
Yes I've seen your thread, one of your pictures makes me worry that my NEU 1527 will not fit ????? But I bought it anyway.
|
if i were you, i would recommend doing a centre diff conversion immidiately.
Not only will this give you as much space as you want for a motor to fit, but it will also eliminate the weakpoint which is the tranny. It can barely handle my motor so i believe a 1527 would be worse. What kv rating is it? and what lipos are you going to power it with? |
I can't go w/a CD due to useing 10S, I need the gear reduction it provides.
|
whats thekv rating of the 1527? you could just use a cd and gear to around 60-65mph on 10s and be happy. You wouldnt over heat or anything.
|
The 1527 is 1500kv, the prob is the rpms are in the 50K area w/the transmission !
I also have a 1521 1050KV I will use also, I would jsut rather the 1527 for it's sheer mass. |
The motor is rated to 60,000 rpm. So that isnt a problem. I was going to run my 1520 on 9s which is 53000rpm or so.
With a centre diff, geared to 10tpinion and 47t spur You should have a top speed of around 75mph using badland tires. Running this gearing and these speed on 10s should give you no temperature problems at all. I would say this is extremely conservative for a truck this light. You could always gear down for my top speed :) I am currently running on 6s with the 1520 geared for 53mph... I have no temp issues what so ever usinig badlands. When i go 9s i will gear the truck on 6s for around 45mph and so on 9s i should have around 70-73mph. Should be a ballistic truck :) By the way... the savage tranny struggles with 6s... This is why i am doing the centre diff conversion now before going to 9s. The tranny will not be able to handle anything more than 6s unless new gears are brought out, which they are not. |
I'm going to have a considerable amount of aluminum so it will be much heavier than yours.
I know the tranny is a weak point, I've done a considerable amount of home work befor i ordered the first part. I'm going with the trans for now until I rustle up more funds to go in a different direction. Thinking about possibly a Kershiz gear drive and a Slipperential ideally . I'll know more once it get this beast together and do a little driving to see whats gonna work and what I can and will improve on. |
Have fun with this chassis guys...
Poor weight distributuion will be the first issue, batteries in the back, cmon, who comes up with this crap... And then you will see the need for al bulkhead/diff cases. The stock parts are not strong enough to handle the addl load of the ext wheelbase and the larger tires most will want to run. The tranny will likely have issues too, if you run the weak azz slipper too tight. Then you will have diff issues, click click. And with the al cases it will be a PITA to get them out. So lets recap - azz heavy, diff eating, weak plastic truck. I will make your lives easier and just say go with a lst. Sure you have to make your own ext chassis, but what fun is bolting stuff together? Get some legos, will be easier on the wallet. |
I see your concerns James and I'd like to think I have most of them covered.
I ordered the FLM bulks & Towers and a bunch of little stuff from Mike already. I already have the HPI BP diffs NIP still. Once I have chassis in hand I will be looking into doing a 180 and try to get the packs up front some how. I've ben working on cutting my own chassis out of 3/16" T6 plate but it's ben very slow going. Already eaten up several jig saw blades. I was chatting with the wife about the lack luster progress and she offered to buy the DB17 chassis after a little smooth talking ! Soo, either way within the next week I hope to be starting a assembly. Since theres already ben several builds on this platfrom I'll probably just post a finished build, IDK ? LST platform, one of the best if not THE BEST. I already have 2, I want something different. |

The savage looks good on paper but unless you run them stock, with small tires and a loose slipper they become money pits fast... |
Here's my Savage conversion if it helps any.
You can build that tranny to be pretty strong. I have all the part numbers listed. I run a Tekin 2250kv setup run on both 4s and 6s. * |
link my weight distribution is pretty much 50/50 with the lipos in the rear and the motor up front, soi am not worried about that at all...
Maybe the LST platform works, but the savage platform is no doubtly stronger due to the design. It does make working on it more difficcult but that doesnt bother me, and once i have the centre diff conversion, i will never have to take the TVPs off to wrench on it. I did notcie wheni had to tighten my slipper really tight that my diffs were going "Click Clack" when landing etc... but these BP diffs are so strong they still look brand new! BONDO!!! if you can, cancel your order for the FLM Bulks... They are ok but absolute B***H to work with as they are not easy access and you may have probs with drive cups. Go with the Golden Horizons Bulks! They maintain the same set up as stock and are extremely strong and work with the Stock SHD Axles!!! Link i have also been running huge MOABs on my truck for a short while with no problems as it is geared correctly. But huge tyres are crap anyway why would you want to use them? my maxx size badlands are the best tyre for grip! I only use the moabs for jumping as they give enough rotational mass to give great air control Whip i was running the fully hardened tranny too and it was rubbish and expensive... Just kept on stripping gears in my tranny even though it was perfectly shimmed. The torque your tekin produces is no where near the 1520 on 6s let alone the 9s i will be running. Just too many variables that can go wrong in the tranny... linc, plus it is not necessarry to run the lipos in the rear, you can always run your lipos on the side of the chassis which is placed more towards teh front of the chassis. What ilike about this is that i can run lipos in the chassis and on the outside, so i always have plenty of room for lipos... |

The savage is not stronger than a lst. I have both. The chassis on a savage will deform when you smash it good. The lst plate chassis is torsionally superior too. Up and down forces are not the only ones these trucks have to cope with. Savage diffs suck. I tried them all and the lack of a solid diff case is the root of the problem. The lst comes with that solution stock, and you can run tin coated gears and al cups if you want a sturdy diff. Big tires reek havoc with diff internals, but really thick fluid helps, along with a properly set slipper. As for the slipper, the clutch pack style on the lst is vastly superior than the pad thingy on the savage tranny. Mikes slipperential is better than the savage but I do not see it doing as well as the lst tranny/slipper setup. The lst places the motor transversely so you do not have a motor torque twist issue to deal with. Only bad thing on the lst is the steering design, still easier to mod that than trying to keep a savage together with a 1521 or bigger motor. Until you push a lst you have no idea what the platform is capable of, how well it is designed, and how poor the savage really is... The tvp design looks good on paper, but it is not that great in use, causes all kinds of access issues and leaves very little real estate to work with. You can hang some battery boxes off the sides but your batteries are not protected as well and the boxes must be bulkier and heavier to properly hold and protect the packs. Nothing wrong with a savage flux, pretty good truck out of the box. But it will not last as long as a lst and cannot handle the power as well. Just look at all of the savvy users that put lst shocks on, they are better than the savage units. Well everything on a lst is as good as those shocks, and better than the savage. The lst costs more new too... Maybe you get what you pay for? Nothing wrong with a savage, but it is what it is, better than a maxx/revo, but not as good as the lst. |
Well spoken James.
Congradualtions, Your making me rethink my situation now. I agree with everything you said about the LST platform because I've found all of it to be true by first hand basis. I did not realize some of these potental issues of the Savage design. When tearing apart my Flux I was aggrevated and cursing the design but chaulked it up as being unfimiliar with the assembly.(My first mistake I guess?) I'm mainly concerned with the diffs, I did buy the BP units first off. They are really beefy gears, I guess I see how they hold up ? I had probs with the REVO diffs till I did the LST diff mod, wounder if the same can be done to the Savy ? My other concern is the limp wristed slipper assembly, your totally right on that ! No comparison to the LST. But I did buy the Kershiz SuperDuty slipper dealie-o, It will either make it better or worse ? The unbeleivable backwards process of aquireing all my parts may allow me more time to think and rethink WTF I'm doing ? |
No prb Dawg, just trying to impart some of my experience...
I got a savage after fooling with emaxx and converted nitro revos. So much better, but I did get sick of fooling with the diffs. Then the lst rolled in and I was blown away with how easy it was to work on and how the drivetrain stayed together. I will say the golden horizons savage bulks are the best looking by design, and with the bp diffs it should aleviate the issue, at the cost of another lst roller... I still have a stretched chassis savvy to sell, and the 5t chassis. Will make a 5th scale truck based on the lst platform. I have a 5t body laying around... |
hmmm... i will definitely take what you have said on board.... im going to do some LST research... I love everything about the savage except the tranny. I was never a fan of the LST because of the way it was setup... but i will have a closer look into it.
BTW... people use LST Shocks on a savage for bling factor as they are huge... They actually do no benefit the savage in anyway as they were not designed for the savage. They require a more up right mounting position rather than the diagonal style that the savage possess. This results in a lot of bent LST Shafts. They are over weight and not as strong as the Big bores... you do speak very highly of the LST and maybe i have missed something here... I have always been a savage lover and love the reasons its hard to work on too. Just makes it more interesting working around themmm |
Just going by physics alone, I am not sure how anything can be stronger than a twin verticle plates setup. Makes it harder to work on, but it's got to be stronger. I jump my Savage off my house. (I have Baja 5B shocks, that helps.)
However hearing about the LST here has piqued my interest. I've always liked LOSI. Might have to pick up one. * |
