Quote:

The camera has a much better resolution and colour balance than the flycams. The quality is astonishing. The only negative point is that the
status leds are not really bright, and in bright sunlight (or snow, like here in Geneva) it's hard to see the lights. Otherwise: GREAT product.
Looks like it takes pretty good video. Much better then the camera I have now does at least!

Here is another great review - http://terracode.com/AEE_MiniDV/AEE_Mini_DV_P1.html
This review says it only accepts 8gb sd cards where the hobbycity review claims 16gb.

It also looks like it records a little fast. I would like to see a video of a stopwatch or similar to see if the time is right. It just might be the framerate is too slow so it looks fast..

The review I linked to stated they used a nice class 6 SD card (which the card included at hobbycity might be??) and they didn't quite get 30fps. The quality is good enough for me and my $20 tho!!

Well I took the plunge and ordered one. Is anyone else getting one? Any thoughts?

suicideneil 02.07.2010 03:36 PM

I hope its better than my unbranded version, 24fps and its noticeably not all that brilliant. The HC one is much cheaper too, kinda annoying really..

redshift 02.23.2010 08:17 PM

Yours show up yet ML?

I missed the 'boat' on the first order, and they're still out of stock.

Metallover 02.23.2010 08:32 PM

I used slow shipping...

It said it shipped out Feb 18 and I ordered it on Feb 8th.. All the items of my order were well in stock.

I have heard some bad news tho; some of the reviews say that they got the older camera.:gasp: I sure hope that doesn't happen to me.

I won't have any rc onboard vid, but I'll do some tests and get some e-bike riding video posted up.

redshift 02.23.2010 08:37 PM

Jeez 10 days just to process....

Ok sounds good, I do hope they send the right one!

adrictan 02.24.2010 02:17 AM

I received mine the day before. It's the new one. Seems quite good.

kulangflow 02.25.2010 06:32 PM

Here's another option for a mini camera if the Turnigys don't work out for you. I am really happy with mine and will be buying another one this weekend.

My buddy owns that website, but I'm pimping the camera only because I like the camera.

Good times.

The video was extremely clear! Might have to try one of these on my truggy just for kicks

BrianG 02.25.2010 09:54 PM

That little keychain one looks like a winner to me. Video quality is good, small/light, and cheap. I also like the external memory card - with memory being so cheap, you can bring a few with you.

dezfan 02.25.2010 11:41 PM

Awesome just ordered one of the key fob cameras.:yipi:

zeropointbug 02.26.2010 01:04 AM

I am for sure going to get one of these little babies for 2010 racing season. I've always wanted to record the races, but mini cams weren't up to snuff until now.

suicideneil 02.26.2010 02:04 PM

Thats the key chain camera I've mentioned/ seen mentioned before- video is very high quality & the price is cheap as chips indeed

nativepaul 02.26.2010 03:53 PM

Do you know a UK or Chinese supplier Neil? I'm not a big fan of paying American middle men if products are available locally or at source.

pinkpanda3310 02.26.2010 08:47 PM

If you get the keychain cam make sure it's not a V1

Same here, 8 days of waiting. But there was some huge important festival in China and most (if not all) people got a week off, so that would explain the delay. Kind of lame they don't put it on their website or make an auto reply when you send mails.

The camera looks like every other camera just with Turnigy on it.

Meh, ebay- just select 'worldwide' then you will see more of the HongKong and other Chinese based sellers. Price varies, but about £10-20 for the best 8GB version is average- cant say fairer than that considering the compact size and video quality you get

I still need to test my little Muvi camera type thingy- bloody weather goes from bad to worse...

Arct1k 02.27.2010 07:33 PM

Bah So just because of this thread I just spend $27 on the keychain camera (16.90) and a 4GB Memory card (10)...

Will let you know more when it arrives...

Metallover 03.02.2010 11:14 PM

I just got the Turnigy camera! At first I was amazed at how small it is. I expected it to be bigger. It is 2 1/4" tall and 3/4" length and width at it's widest points.

It didn't come with any instructions, and it needs to be hooked up with the included usb cord and charged a little before it will turn on.

I did a couple short video tests, but I wont post anything until this weekend, if the weather is good. As of now, inside, the video quality is pretty bad, if you're moving. The resolution is great standing still; hopefully it will be better outside.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7302274.jpg

The card included is a Sandisk 2gb micro sd card made in taiwan with a code on it saying "0906503544s488", or something similar. The numbers are extremely small and I don't have a magnifying glass handy.

I tried to get a clear shot of the numbers but they're too darn small

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7302277.jpg

The video has a timestamp on it be default, but I think there is a way to remove it. I'll post it up if I figure it out.

Does anyone else have a Turnigy cam yet?

adrictan 03.02.2010 11:33 PM

I received mine a few weeks ago but yet to try it out on the track.

redshift 03.03.2010 06:56 PM

Not great with fast motion then Riley?

Thread about it on RCG- http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1188019

If you would, upload like a 30 second vid to www.Mediafire.com, and post a link here??

It doesn't need to be anything great, just a quick pan up and down your street or something. I'd like to download a file and check the stats.

If you're down with that I'd appreciate it

zeropointbug 03.03.2010 07:09 PM

What cam are you using Redshift? Prob not that small as you have been taking vids for a couple years now right?

Idea, it would be cool to have an extra receiver with a servo on it controlling the direction of the cam in a race, that way a buddy can turn the cam to face different directions. Just a thought.

redshift 03.03.2010 07:19 PM

Not using anything at the moment lol the old Flycam was retired with a water landing back in August (not me flying hehe). And the original Turnigy HK52 I got back in the fall really doesn't do much for me. I've done vids for just about one year, mostly 2009.

I think the keychain cams are the way to go for onboard, I don't have one yet tho.

Your pan and/or tilt idea is a good one, lots of pilots have been doing just that. All you'd need is a 3 channel for a simple 2 position setup, no extra receiver needed for that.

I may do it myself, either that or 2 full time views, the cams are cheap enough!

zeropointbug 03.03.2010 07:23 PM

I know, but if you don't have a 3ch Rx is what I meant... I should have got the DX3.0 and not the 2.0. But yeah, a 2 positions would be nice, like forward and backwards is all you would need.

kulangflow 03.03.2010 07:28 PM

I'm pretty sure you can mod the DX2.0 to be a 3.0. I think I read that somewhere anyway. It would be worth a quick look.

Found it: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_91...tm.htm#9127563

redshift 03.03.2010 07:30 PM

For racing I think youd want two cams, a second cam would be the same weight as an additional servo, or even less. Plus you'd have to remember "one click forward then one click back" in the middle of a race the whole time. My plan is to run the cams sans batteries, and instead use a DC-DC converter with JST plugs. There are issues with the little 1S lipos in many of these cams, I figure why not eliminate it and lighten the ballast (planes), and eliminate charging the stupid things too!

Metallover 03.03.2010 10:08 PM

Well, I had some extra time today between homework and church, so I made a short vid. The fist part is me holding the camera. For the second part I attached the camera to my handlebars of my bike. I will be doing e-bike riding this weekend and I'll upload that video to youtube.

Mediafire original 73mb avi file - http://www.mediafire.com/?jjj15mwzn4n
Mediafire 15mb, 1.5mbps wmv video - http://www.mediafire.com/?ldhtjlgjyb4

And that second file uploaded to photobucket-

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid345.photobucket.com/albums/p382/metallover1/Turnigytest2.flv">

And finally here's a screenshot taken from the paused avi file. It looks a little better then the screenshot when the video is moving, but this will give you an idea of the resolution.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...gytestshot.jpg

This weekend a better video will come. I might attach it to my helmet, who knows..

redshift 03.03.2010 10:53 PM

Cool, thanks for the trials!

Ok it comes up 720 x 480 and 30fps. I was especially interested to know if there were repeated frames, and there are not. The resolution looks way better than the HK52, so this does look like a good candidate for onboard. I may end up with a few of these as well as the keychain cams. If only they would both lose the timestamp!

I sure can't wait for that white crap to go away tho

Metallover 03.03.2010 11:03 PM

Oh, but there is a way to remove the timestamp! I am pretty sure I saw it while reading up on the camera. After tonight I'll be real busy until Saturday, but I might find time to post er up and figure er out before then..

redshift 03.03.2010 11:18 PM

Hope you're right about that, I've only seen how to correct the date. I really don't see why they put it there at all, but then most of us probably don't understand Chinese logic...

riverat1540 03.04.2010 04:02 AM

better than i could imagine for the price, i may have to order one as well, thanks for the vid cant wait to see it in something fast!

Metallover 03.07.2010 07:07 PM

Here's the video! It's not the best, but it works. The camera is mounted to the top of my helmet. The good thing about that is that you can see everything I see. The bad thing is that it's so high up it looks like I am going a lot slower then I actually am.

The camera stopped recording after 30 minutes and 36 seconds. I think it ran out of memory on the 2gb card. The .AVI file it made was 1.86gb. There was nothing else on the card when I recorded this.

After editing and converting the file is 88.3mb. I can upload that directly to megaupload if anyone is interested. I might also be able to work some magic with winrar...

I think the camera did a pretty good job and overall I am happy with it.

pinkpanda3310 03.08.2010 04:06 AM

That's not bad, in fact it is very similar to the keychain cam, it even has the same time date stamp. You'll find when you stick it in an rc the will be a hell of a lot more jittering.

redshift 03.08.2010 07:55 PM

I just got one of the 808 keychain cams, and yes panda the timestamps are identical. In fact the specs, picture and everything except the physical layout are the same.

So it seems we're finally at the point where a decent standard has been reached!

Video looks good Riley, a bit shaky on your skull, wonder what it would look like mounted to the bike? Nice e-bike too!

I guess it's come down to pure preference of standup vs. laydown, I plan to go with the keychain over the Turnigy. But only because they will work so much better for the planes. So not to threadjack here, I am equally impressed with the Turnigy.

I may get a few of the Turnigys just for ground use... decisions decisions!

Metallover 03.14.2010 10:37 PM

I uploaded another video. I tried to make it more exciting, and I added audio. There are some slow motion shots at the end.

That is a good review, highlights a few important differences that arent immediately obvious. I wonder, if you enter nothing for the date and time file ( just leave it empty, or put a '.' there ), whether that would get rid of it altogether?...

I don't believe you can edit the time stamp file, but there are filters for programs that completely take it out.
I can't recall the video I watched, but it wasn't completely gone..

kulangflow 04.05.2010 11:34 AM

You can edit the date, but there is no known way to actually remove it. Most people just blur it or crop it out.

Metallover 04.05.2010 11:38 AM

I've tried editing/deleting the date on the turnigy cam with every method I could find, but to no avail. Blurring/cropping seems to be the only way.

suicideneil 04.05.2010 02:22 PM

Very odd, its the only thing that spoils these ickle cameras really. Never mind I guess..
