My GCM Desertboy-17 (Flux)
So my savage is going through yet another transformation:lol: this thing has seen more upgrades than any rc I own I think but all things considered I have owned it since they hit the shelves back when and I think the only other rig I have owned as long is a clod.
This was needed tho after going brushless I grew tired of chasing the darn thing after it wheelied over on itself and ruining new bodies in one outting! So this bad boy stretches the tvps out to 3" longer over stock! I didnt think this was much at first till I got it Thurs. and started putting it together and with front and rear diffs in I was shocked at just how much larger this is. I had to get a motor mount and they happened to have one there that was milled out osme to fit a castle motor since the hpi motor is smaller in diameter so that was good timing on my part. The kit is great, comes with screws, steering brace, servo mount, the battery tray is optional and theirs a skid plate available as well but was out of stock when I ordered. Here is contact info and the specs for ones interested. Now the goods. Like to hear some feedback on the bodys also, think their to short and its another $45 to get what I need which is a 1/5 scale lid. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture005.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture007.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture008.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture011.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture012.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture013.jpg |
Bodies...
Forgot to mention the measurement to give an idea from axle to axle is 18" and the redcat lid or the other 2 (firehammer, xtm mammoth) are 24.75" long Not sure on gearing yet but I have a 44 spur and 21 pinion and a 16t thats it, 4s lipo. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture021.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture022.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture016.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture019.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture023.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture024.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture025.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture027.jpg |
Looks dam good except how the bodys are unfortunetly falling very short. Curious to see a larger body on that lunker chassis !!!
Be real careful with that TrueRC pack w/it only being 15C !!! I've always liked those Losi tires !!! |
Thanks buddy.
You know I was told something like that before on here about the lipo, I was told to buy it so I did and now im being told its bad! Sad thing is its true cause I emailed tru rc to confirm and he said the same :( Unfortunately I cant afford a new one right now with having to spend $45 on a new body and a few misc. things I need to finish this oh and yea I have no radio either :( Had a few really rough months and have seen 6 of my rc's head to new homes and my radios to, dam bills anyway! So hope to get a new one maybe in april. Suggestions on a good priced lipo? Wanna stick with 4s I think unless theirs a good reason for more? I have been happy with the power of a 4s so far. |

Yea thats what I was told when I bought it then someone on here replied to my old thread saying it would explode at some point lol. So ive been worried now ever since but even so still like some suggestions for a 2nd pack.
|
I didn't say Dans packs are junk, Just said be careful Gearing etc due to the 15C.
I still have few of Dans packs and I concur on the under rateing, but you have to play it safe with all that weight. Heres where a LOT of memebrs including myself have purchased Lipos from, the prices are great and selection is through the roof. They also have 2.4 radios for under $40.00, not a typo ! http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_index.asp |
Are you using belleville springs on the slipper?

Neumotors.com has some good prices on high quality lipos. I just got a 5500mah 25C 4s lipo with shipping for $84. Some people really like the Lipos from HobbyCity, personally I would rather not bother. Some have had big problems with them and after paying $25 to ship them I would rather send my money to Neu in Cali than HC in Hong Kong
|
$80 isnt bad at all, im in Ca so that would be a fast delivery. Thanks for the info both of you I will check em both when im ready. Next step is a radio which is $200 looking at the dx3s.
So what does everyone think about my current gearing? Double checked and my other pinion is a 17t only 2 I have right now. Thanks |
Bear with me, so if I were to say buy 2 of these and wired right I would have 9000mah? and be 4s?

wired parraelle you'll have 2s with 9000mah There are 5000mah packs with 40C also availible, spend a few more bucks and get the higher C-rating packs if budget allows |
agreed on the high c rating. high capacity x high c makes a nice stable battery. worth the extra cash in these big trucks (in my experience anyway) like bondonutz says
your clutch spring thing is cool. so there's a thrust bearing in there also, and the washer-spring thing? |

I'm curious, how long has the DB-17 conversion been out of stock??
|
i called and they said the parts are at finishing. they make them at that shop.
|
Ok so with the help of Brett (cpe) I got the redcat rampage body on Wed. and I knew it was gonna be larger then what im used to but wow surprised me! The pics tell it all, if you own a proline f650 mgt/lst sized then you get the idea.
Just finished tonight (well morning now for me) doing painting duty this one takes a bit of paint. I wasnt able to do the color combo I wanted since i only had a little bit of the colors I wanted (red/yellow) and im broke so had to go with what I the most of which was black so thats the main color and I had enough yellow to toss in some added brightness. You will see the finished deal later its drying now and I still have silver to do next. Here is some comparison shots with the f650. I tried my best to get the wheels wells lined up better but the dam front body mount wasnt working in my favor so thats why their off a bit but hey who will know while its flying by? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...cture022-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...cture023-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...cture024-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture028.jpg |
Thats a big deisel bastard of a body !
How thick, .60 ?? Looks reasonably scale w/the tire wheel combo, A+ |
I would say .060 except at the bottom sections on both sides below the doors not sure what that might be called but once I get soe pics of it painted it will be easier to point out but its a bit thinner there for some reason.
Dam thing weights a bit to, gonna get the scale out and see. Thanks for the comment to :yipi: |
It's thinner at some areas because of the moulding process. The start with a .060 sheet and it stretches over the mould and becomes thinner somewhere. The roof should be thick.
|
Yea it is for sure and whole cab area really, the nose is to just at the bottom on the sides is thin and found the hard way since its been pretty cold here so I would keep the body somwhat warm with a heat gun and I got to close one time and now theirs a little bit of a warped spot lol. Oh well its a body I can live with it.
|
Couple shots of it painted just gotta slap some stickers on it. Found that the silver area is pretty thin compared to the rest which is pretty thick and in the cold I was trying to keep it warm while painting with the trusty heat gun and got to close to the passenger side and well theirs now wavyness
All in all one of my better jobs im no painter by any means  Tips the scale at 1.6lbs vs the f650 at 9ozs. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...cture002-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...Picture003.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...cture007-1.jpg |
Looks good and since its not a shelf queen, thats what counts. :)
|
I have two of those trc packs for my savage, but they are to run 8s. You will kill them w/ that big truck on 4s.
Hc lipos are nice, but so are the neu packs when on sale. Nice truck otherwise. |
Looks purty kewl !!!!
Q, will the front tires rub the body at full lock when the suspension is compressed ? Almost a pound and a half of lexan, jeepers thats a lot of plastic ! |
Just looked and no just clears, I have integy 17mm adapters on there which stretch it out a tad and I have the maximizer 17mm beadlocks with 1/2" offset. If it becomes a issue I may look for more offset but I think at most it might rub on a hard landing for a second till springs back up and if the tires are ballooning.
|
I would assume your running the standard width arms then ?
When I do asssemble mine, I looking to go with the Savage-XL arms and axles. I'm really liking the look of your beadlocks with the LST tires, great looking combo !! |
Thanks! Just suks stupid losi stopped making these harder ones vs the ones they have now. I am running the Xl stuff, I have another old thread on what ive done to the savage probaly a few pages back now lol.
|
The aftershock tires are considerably lighter than the older lst1 tires... I am running them on my 6x6 maxx based truck. Lots of traction on the aftershock tires due to the voids in the lugs. But they do benefit from balancing, like all heavy tires.

Had a set briefly and just didnt like how soft they were, could see nothing but pancake tires lol.

Got some stickers placed so looks much better, running low on stickers to so had to scrap the bottom to find some haha. Also can see the booboo I made with the heat gun on the side

loving the body! how is your motor coping? are you using stock gearing, cause i found that i had to return to the normal 20/44 when i installed my DB-17. I think it was because i am more on throttle now compared to the wheelie king it was before...
|
Wich I could say but between busy, rain and just having for some unknown reason a difficult time getting the rx installed how I wanted it hasnt been ran yet :(
Just been having stupid stuff go wrong, like cutting the rx lead on the esc lol. Really big hassle has been trying to figure a way to mount the gopro cam, one of my mods on my forum is gonna help me out make a metal plate to mount it but have to get some pics once hes done. Here is what im working on the rx, messy looking I know but it will work and the rx will snug as a bug in a rug lol. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...e/DSC07260.jpg |
Got to run this for the first time last weekend at the coast and man was it a blast but only having one lipo it didnt last long so a couple more lipos are in order and a better charger that doesnt take 3hrs to charge a 4s lipo!
the 2nd clip is onboard and the savage shows about half way through, my buddy met us there with his wheely king. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZQexIbASSQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwhIn...eature=related |
nice vid! looks really controllable !!! how much over stock do u lik it???? i should be running mine properlythis weekend
|
I love it over stock, it handles soo much better now. I could gun it and it would go and not just flip over all the time, worth every penny :yipi:
