I am having man trouble
Hopefully the title gets attention, and no it's not what you automatically assumed.
This is about shaving and no not anything down below but normal facial shaving, and head because I am bald. So I have two major issues, coarse hair on my face and a very sensitive neck. At best I can shave every other day without major skin damage, rash, and bleeding. I have tried everything under the sun and the best it ever got was the gillette M3 power. But alas, they have discontinued these and they are getting almost impossible to find. There are still some standard M3 blades around but something they do to the power ones works better. I have tried every type/brand of electric with little success either, they all leave stubble, wet or dry. I hate the damn fusion as the blades are so close it clogs up constantly and really isn't that smooth in my opinion. So I just tried out the schick quatro titanium and it seems okay. I will need a few more rounds for sure but it did better on my head than the M3 ever did. Anyway, wondering what every one else's experience is in this realm. Has anyone ever tried the sharpener sold on TV? Worth anything? What about any of the other TV stuff? |
That sucks, I can shave dry with a worn out razor and not really have issues, although I have a friend with the same problems you experience. Best of luck.
|
I have similar sensitive skin. I use an electric throughout the week at night, on Saturday I take a break, then Sunday I use the quattro at night . I use nivea aftershave balm after every shave regardless if electric of razor. I find shaving at night lets my skin calm own a bit before the day, otherwise it is red and irritated.

One of my best friends used to have that type of beard and every time he shaved he came out looking like he got attacked at the neck like a horror movie. When we were younger in our twenties we gave him a Indian pseudo name "grey face" because his hair was so coarse that even after he just shaved his face was dark and ashy looking....cruel of uslooking back and him being sensitive to it only made matters worse. BTW he was hungarian/american
so later in life he got all his facial hair removed by electrolisis hair removal by a doctor. At the time about 10 years ago hhe treatment was is in trail stages so he got like a half off discount so he could be in their before and after book. He still has a few hairs come up in the same places but he only shaves like once a week now. But nowaadays they have a garantee that any new growth is covered for extra treatments as necessary so abslutly no shaving will be needed. I might ad that it is not that expensive now. I will also mention that when the treatment was done he looked like a monster for a couple weeks as the each pore that a hair grows from pusses up and pukes the hair folicle out, making for a look like a 13yr old with the wrst acne you have ever seen. He was embarrassed to even go out in public but it does all clear up. He is a much happier guy now. |
sorry no proof reading or spellcheck getting ready for work
|
i too have coarse/thick hair and very sensitive skin. as a result, i shave twice a week.
for me, this is the best stuff. takes away all stinging/irritation after i shave. i've used it for a few years now and won't use anything else. |

I guess I'm lucky because I can go at least 2-3 days without needing to shave. And even if I wanted to grow a beard, it would look like I have mange. I don't even use shaving cream; I just take a shower, and once done (and hair is still warm/damp/soft), I can just shave it.

I'm using a M3 Power with normal M3 blades and I gotta say it's the best shaver I've tried.
Never had a problem I shave around 3 times per week as per g/f requirement :P |

my gf gets a rash if she shaves her girl parts but nair doesnt give her any problems, i know it sounds dumb and you will probley look like an ass in the checkout lains at wallgreens but i bet it will work |
:oh:
Nair work good, on my boy parts too :P |
I use a Wilkinson Sword, no idea what model.
Electric shaving ?? |
I wish i could shave my head with a razor, all i can do is use clippers without an attatchment. I have too many bumps on my head to use a razor.
|
I also have similar issues. I shave my head about every 5 days and facial hair mostly every day. I have found that the best time to shave face is right after waking. For whatever reason the hair seems alt softer. Otherwise using warm water to soak shaving area works well. Warm shaving cream also helps. As for razors I use disposables (gillette from costco) and throw them out after head shaving or about 5 days. Sooner if they lose sharpness. Not very environmentally friendly but for sensitive skin maintaining sharpness is important. Don't like electrics.
|
I can get away without shaving for a few days- very 'fair-haired' as it were on my face, only get a few thicker dark hairs on my top lip & under my chin(s). I currently use a cheapy 2 blade disposable razor, but they are all getting blunt so will be venturing to get something new soon. I dont like to buy the decent razors as they cost about £6-8 for a razor with one head, and another £6-10 for a pack of 3 or 4 replacement heads; insane. I only really have issues shaving my neck though as like alot of you guys the skin there doesnt seem to be very smooth & is also seemingly quite thin and sensitive- dont get a rash so much, just difficult to shave without bleeding or ending up red-raw afterwards. I'll have to see whats a reasonable price down my local Boots chemist or up the local Sainsbury's etc.
Veet/ nair is awesome stuff, but the trouble is hair grows back = stubble > itchy knackers.... |
I can't stand the electrics - they rash me up something horrible. And I ruled out after shaves a long time ago - they are worse than anything on my skin. This may have as much to do with when you shave. Have you tried it at different times (in the shower/right after shower/at night/in the am)?
How about waxing the top of your head? (Keep in mind, I know nothing about being bald.....!!) |
I usually shave after a hot shower (never liked anything but hot showers, gets the "grime" off, plus the hooker smells, and body glitter than transfers). it does not work as well, cause your skin will be puffy and the razor will not get the hairs cut off all the way down. I have to shave in multiple different directions, as the hair seems to grow differently in different places.
I use a mach 3 with the cheapest refill that they sell, and gilette shaving gel. Clean my face with soap and hot water afterwards, and then splash cold water on my face to finish. |
Wow this should be the TMI thread- kiddies paying attention? This is your future mooooooohoooooooohahahahahaaaaaaa
|
I'm surprised no one has suggested this, but I bet using a really nice straight razor would do the trick. It also doubles the size of your balls.

The electrolysis or even newer laser treatments sound interesting, just a lot of cash to fork out at once.
Not doing nair, tried that stuff, not good for sensitive skin or near eyes etc. I shave in the shower with a fog free mirror and use nivea shave cream for sensitive skin. I have tried some after shave treatments but many seem to worsen the break outs. I like a straight razor shave but I have not the balls to do it to myself and getting them done is expensive. We have a place here in Houston called roosters that does a rather nice job and is setup more like an old fashioned barber shop. I am with you linc on the hot showers, plus it is more relaxing. I have recently gone back to showering at night which I like better because it helps me sleep better. |
I have sensitive skin on my neck, like a lot of you, which is why I only shave every 3-4 days to avoid horrible breakouts/irritation. I happen to have very oily skin, too, so that's a double-edge sword. If I do shave everyday it leaves the pores open and causes breakouts. I have tried shaving every day using a brand new blade (VERY expensive) and that didnt help.
I'm currently running a Gillette Fusion with Noxzema shave cream. I get ~10 minutes of runtime per charge and the razor will last for ~10 cycles. |
A bit more material for you Neil...
Tex, during or immediately after a hot shower...hold/pull the skin tight & use long strokes, not short scratchy ones. Go with the grain, then against. Rinse with warm/hot water, then you're done |

i shaved against the grain....once...i ended up having dozens of ingrown hairs that i had to get rid of one-by-one. my neck and jaw area break out pretty bad when i shave and there really isn't any pain or rash, but instead, acne and a lot of itchiness. i've cut down to twice a week because of this and it helps a little. |

I am careful what goes on my face because I have rosacea as well. The shave cream I use was recommended by my dermatologist as being free of everything unnecessary.
I have three different creams I put on for the rosacea depending on how bad it is and an antibiotic. One cream goes on no matter what, one is for flare ups, and the other is a steroid for when it gets really bad. So in keeping with the shaving deal I have to keep the other in mind as well. |
I can understand now why laser treatment is attractive for you. Needless to say you've got some studying to do on the subject. I would hate to think it has adverse affects. Hope it turns out for the better Tex :)

Remedies
I am sure everyone has their own way of taking care of business. I was lucky not to start shaving until I was in the Navy for a year or so(19 or 20 years old), but once I started I tried several ways to get the job done. I too have sensitive skin. Using any kind of razor just seems barbaric to me. I use an electric razor(Norelco), but I always shave after a hot shower. Plus before shaving I use a very lite application of baby oil, and the apply whatever aftershave or cologn I am using that day. THEN I shave and have very little issue with skin irritation. Applying the aftershave first seems to help stand the stubble up and keeps the skin clean. I shave with and against the grain. Never really had the whole ingrown problems myself.
|
Have you tried baby powder with an electric razor? I had to do that when I lived in the Philippines because of the humidity.
I actually just shave with a beard trimmer now because my wife doesn't like my face fully shaven anyway. lol |
I keep a clean shaved head too. I use Fusion blades (Mach III before that) and shave in the shower. Soaking in a hot shower for a few min helps a lot I think. On the neck, shave up, not down if you get cut easy.
|
I too have the same problem as alot of you. I thought I was alone. lol It seems every time I shave, I break out pretty bad. It actually hurts to shave cause my skin is so sensitive and I can't get a close shave to save my life. My solution = don't shave. I really hate not being able to shave and having to use the eletric clippers all the time to keep it manageable, but not much options. I've considered the laser crap, but I don't even wanna know how much that cost...
|
My face is not that sensitive with medium growth but, I have been liking this Anthony Logistics stuff with throw away razors for a clean shave.
": eucalyptus oil to heal, squalene to lubricate, aloe vera gel to soothe, an infusion of hops (do not drink) to relax, a bunch of vitamins to nourish: A, B5, C, D and E. Natural moisturizing oils soften and lubricate the beard, helping provide a close shave. No Benzocaine so you can't over-shave. Shave Cream washes easily off the blade." |
Hey Tex
Sorry to hear of your troubles, you are not alone. I hate shaving with a burning passion! I have similar trouble, and the best thing I have found is to wash may hair and face in hot water while showering with shampoo, gets the hair nice and soft. Then I use a Mach 3 and make sure the blade is changed as soon as the moisturizer strip is gone. In winter when it gets me the worst I use the Neutrogena aftershave. So far this is the best solution I have found. Hope you find something that works for you, cause a raw face all day sucks! |
OK, I do remember something from a while back that I have been doing that has helped my skin, might work for you.
A few years back i got poison sumac really bad and ended up having to go to a dermatologist. While I was there I mentioned that in the winter the skin under my eyebrows, mustache and goatee would dry out really bad and get red and sore with some skin flaking. The dermatologist told me to wash my face with head and shoulders once a day or so and that should help. Well I did not remember till last year and gave it a try. It really helped, no more irritated skin under the facial hair. Maybe give that a try on your face and neck in the shower before you shave. I let it sit in my hair and facial hair for a few mins while I scrub down, then rinse it out. I usually do this every other day, and use normal shampoo on the other days. I had tried all kinds of cremes and medicated stuff to no avail, but the head and shoulders did the trick. The zinc in the shampoo is good for psoriasis, from what I have heard, so maybe it will help sensitive skin too? |
I dont know if anyone has tried a difference with the mirrors I noticed a lot more ingrown hairs when I purchased one of those 20X mirrors with the light that the women use, Makes a big difference you can actually see what ingrown hairs are causing the problems and get a fine tweezer and pull the stubborn follicles out and use a good aftershave nivea or natural product. Even just for shaving you can see everything
