Another overkill Truggy : MBX5T MMv3 1520 1Y 6S ;)

Hello,
Here is finally my MBX5T converted with Mike's stuff. Happy to get the USPS postage today :lol:after a long wait and worry about customs ^^
The setup :

MMv3 1520 1Y 6S lipo 4000mAh 40C and 15/46 gearing (10/46 in the diffs)

Somes pictures :D

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/1673/grosvert.jpg

The motor mount and servo plate are beautiful :yipi:, I set the punch control to 50% its already to powerfull, I just test it in my appartment and it appears to have a lot of torque. The motor drag is heavy due to long rotor, that mean TORQUE :D

I will test it tomorow, lets get to sleep and dream about brushless Tuggies :D :D

ANGRY-ALIEN 04.22.2010 10:13 PM

POWER!!!... nice build man... Get some vids during test... that thing should be a handful...

George16 04.22.2010 10:17 PM

Very nice!!! There is no such thing as overkill.

Semi Pro 04.22.2010 10:34 PM

great looking truggy

What's_nitro? 04.22.2010 10:44 PM

Looks great man! I am concerned about the tape you put over the fan on the MMM. That seems counter-intuitive...? I'm sure you did it to keep dirt and things out, but with that much motor the fan may come in handy. :)

I think not ! Geared for low 40 mph with 6S and 1600kV should mean lower amp draw than a classical 2200kV in 4S geared for same speed no ?
Yes its to prevent dust and thing to go the the fan, I had issue with blocked fan on my other MMv3 case :(.
I did the same for my inferno VE geared for 40mph in 4S and the fan rarely comes on, so I don't think there will be a problem...
Anyway, test in a few hours ^^ Hard to wait ;)

nuz69 04.23.2010 09:05 AM

Test completed !
Torque is insane obviously, but the chassis has no difficulty to handle it. Somes vids will come and will be more significant than long story, but it works great !
I was little disapointed by the temp at the end of the run : 135F motor (ambient temp 75 and i only drove under sun) and ESC Fan always on, but I completely closed my hull. Had the feeling that the ESC ran hot too  although runtimes was great : 25 min on grass with 6S 4000mAh.
I will dry some air flow in my hull, reduce timing and punch control (current 50% and still hard wheelings !) and see what the temps are saying tonight...

Hmmm... what kind of material are you using to cover the fan? It staying on for long durations could simply mean the airflow has been reduce dramatically and the fan is not
allowed to do it's job efficiently... If you need to reduce the amount of 'dirt' entering the fan, try something like a fine mesh... The temps for the motor aren't all that bad...

I found the below setup in the 1520 thread:

Differential Ratio: 4.6
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 46
Pinion Tooth Count: 15
Total Voltage: 22.2
Motor KV: 1600
Tire Diameter (inches): 5.65
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0
Motor Current Draw: 0
Motor Coil Resistance: 0
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 3.07 : 1
Total Ratio: 14.10667 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 17.75 inches (450.85 mm)
Rollout: 1.26:1
Total Motor Speed: 35520 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 42.32 mph (67.99 km/h)
Effective KV Value: 1600
KT constant: 0.85 oz-in/A

Maybe if you try a smaller pinion (if it's available) you could see lower temps... ... at a full charge of 25.2 volts (approximately), a 14 tooth will yield 44.84 mph (72.03 km/h)
and 13 tooth will get you to 41.64 mph (66.88 km/h)

Don't forget the vids

bruce750i 04.23.2010 10:56 AM

Nice! That motor drag blows trying to put a pinion on when the flat spot is down. I run the same cells in (2)3s packs.

nuz69 04.23.2010 04:13 PM

It comes from my Tires !!! F.... ! So much time spent to glue them and they are TOTALLY unbalanced...... F.... F.... F.... !
So at high speed my motor works a lot to keep the speed against the heavy vibrations...:oops:
13 T pinions with 1520 1Y, thats just cant be!!!!! This motor with good balanced tires should be able to handle 22T pinions without issues... !
I will have to buy some new tires already glued and balanced... I am sure that is where I lost 20-30 degre on the motor...
Does somo one of you know some good one (tires) ?

bruce750i 04.23.2010 04:35 PM

They all need balancing, try to balance yours.
I take a rear dog bone out to let the tire spin freely on the axle. Spin it and let it stop on it's own to see how much and where to place some balancing weight on the inner wheel. I use lead tape from golf pro shops for weight.

Yeah... a 13 tooth is a little small... but I was really looking at the size Spur you're using... how will you be running the truck? speed runs, racing or just bashing?
The motor will definitely handle a 22 tooth, but you will still need a good run up space to get the 60's... Try a few pinions and see which one works the best for you.

Nice build. Get some heat shrink to clean up all that electrical tape!

nuz69 04.24.2010 11:31 AM

I tried with stock wheels, they are perfectly balanced.
Ambient temp 77F with sun, after the run (runtimes ~25-30min) 125F for the motor :yipi:

That's great news ... did you stick with the 15/46 gearing?

Yes 15/46 ;) 6S.

nuz69 04.25.2010 07:51 PM

A little torque display ;)

motor temp after 1 hour of run : 130F :yipi:
Ambient : 82F

Nice... Tyres not taped?

nuz69 04.26.2010 05:34 AM

That's stock tires ^^ Balloning a lot but balanced ;) taped = glued ?

ANGRY-ALIEN 04.26.2010 10:08 AM

Taped: meaning a band of sticky tape on the inside of the tyre to reduce ballooning.. see the below photo...

nuz69 04.26.2010 02:12 PM

Ow ok ! I will do that for when i get my new tires, that's ingenious ^^ Is it spécial tape for tires or just classical tape ?

Well, they are a few types that guys have used... see the below list

Gorilla Tape

Duct Tape - The most commonly used I think.

Strapping Tape - Seen in the above photo...

You can also run a search to find some more conversations on this topic.

nice truggy! I was a little worried when you said you were getting high temps even though your gearing was low... But i think your gearing is too low for the motor???
I was going to run 22/44 on my savage.... Should tame the wheelies, give me gd top end and the motor should be able to easily handle it considering the torq2200 can manage it and this is meant to be WAY more efficient!... Think i know which sort of truggy i am going to get next.

itbvolks 04.27.2010 01:44 PM

Tall gearing pulls lots o current. I think you'll see your efficiency go away pulling that much gear.

Now, geared properly (16-17 maybe 18/46), it should do pretty darn well on 6s and be efficient provided some throttle control is used.

nuz69 04.27.2010 02:00 PM

Ambient temp was more than 80 ! 120F for 15/46 and 6S is a good result, and its the temp of runs over grass ;) It's not undergeared, it's a lot faster than my inferno VE, geared 14/48 and 2200kV 4S.

itbvolks 04.27.2010 02:03 PM

Agreed. 22/44 is way overgeared.

ANGRY-ALIEN 04.27.2010 02:31 PM

Hi guys... I think he's running that ratio through a gearbox... not with a CD setup, so it might not be that over geared...

Alien

bruce750i 04.27.2010 02:32 PM

Nuz69 Your crazy to be driving that close to other people. I'm no counselor but that looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen. OTOH Nice wheelies! Crazy torque! What center diff oil weight are you running?

nuz69 04.27.2010 02:35 PM

Dont worry bmw, I am a responsible driver ^^ I volountary stopped the acceleration quickly because of the mass people :angel:

nuz69 05.03.2010 02:14 PM

Hello guys ! Some news of the total overkill truggy :D
I finally managed to balance my wheels ! As simple as "hello" like we say in France, I tried like you said and after 5 min per wheel the job was done !:yipi:
So today my MBX5T was hungry, I let it eat one battery :D
15/46 gearing like before, 60F outside, after the battery of bashing in grass and dirt, motor was at 95F !!! and ESC at 100F :yipi::yipi::yipi: note that ESC Fan is always on ??? Because of the 6S ?? anyway, objective done for me with the temp!
But I managed to break my front lower arm :( :( after a huge jump  so the video will be for tomorow, sorry guys !
See you later :D

Jahay 05.03.2010 02:16 PM

Nice1! what did material did you use to stick to the wheel for balancing...

Also regarding your fan being always on... that didnt worry you did it? your temps seen way below normal which is a good thing

nuz69 05.03.2010 02:26 PM

I used modeling clay :D but I have ordered some stuff designed for RC wheels already.
Yes I can't explain why my fan was always on, because ESC was cold, maybe it's a safety protocol when the BEC is under 6S or ? Anyway, the temp is great, last time it was 120F but I realised that it was under hard sun and 85F outside, so mission accomplished :D :yipi:
Lets get the 60 mph ^^

Jahay 05.03.2010 02:30 PM

did you just say that the ESC was on because it was cold???? well anyway i hope i am as lucky as you to keep my temps down. Whats your truggy weighing at roughly??? and you dont by any chance have a link to the rc wheel wheel weight stuff????

THANKS

nuz69 05.03.2010 02:42 PM

No I said that I was surprised, because the ESC fan was always on although ESC temp were always under 100F !
I use 6S 4000mAh, so the truggy is... HEAVY :D
Here for balancing, I just bought the special thing to put in the wheel, not the complete stuff :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4yYpa92ZGM
What is your truggy configuration ?

Jahay 05.03.2010 02:53 PM

im running a 1520 motor in a 14lbs savage MT on 6s 6500mah!!! Big batteries!!! BIG WEIGHT! i havent really had the chance to run it properly yet... Just completed building it... Its geared to 55mph

nuz69 05.03.2010 02:56 PM

Ooook, that is H E A V Y :D
You've done a Thread on your conversion ?
The first time you run, just check the motor temp after a few minutes of bashing and it will be ok, my MBX5T is probably between 11 or 12 lbs...

Jahay 05.03.2010 03:08 PM

here is my build up...http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26750

i am actually thinking about building a second lightweight racer savage and putting this motor in it and gearing it to 40mph and then using my current frame for a new twin motor setup...

which is this thread http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26816

ill have it out this weekend with some pics and my temp gun at the ready...

i took it out the other week for 5 mins with new gearing which i hadnt calculated and it was running very hot... i got home and worked out the gearing... IT WAS GEARED TO ROUGHLY 75mph!!!NO wonder it was running hot hot hot!

nuz69 05.06.2010 08:18 AM

Hello guys, here is some pictures with 2.4Ghz system installed, it is not very clean with this purp stuff, but that's enough clean and secured for me

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9552/carroderrire.jpg

The NEU-CC 1520/1Y handles very well the truggy, with 70% punch control, it is very smooth and offers a lot of controllability. The motor run just as cool as it can be and runtimes are just insane ;) 30 min with 6S 4000mAh.
I don't regret my choice, compared to other motor like 1515 1Y or tekin truggy motor that would run a lot hotter and less efficient than my big GreenMonster :lol:
Now I'm convinced that there is no "too powerfull" motor for a chassis and that we better have to choose a bigger motor than a too light motor for a given application :yipi:
