[b]Ok, my build is coming together now... Ive decided to list everything i have bought for this truck so i remember exactly how much effort i have spent on this truck.

But in the mean time... some motor porn http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00172.jpg Thanks again to all that have help me build the savage! All build up pics will come by the weekend I havent managed to fit the motor yet, but i finished the rest of my shocks using the fuel tube mod... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00177.jpg Also i thought i would take some body and light pics... might as well have some nice pics before this truck gets bashed up... lets face it, the body will never look as clean, nor will the wheels and tires * * * http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00183.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00185.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00186.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00181.jpg |
Just got a few things sorted and repaired... Have a little looksy
I have decided to use bullet connectors as thats what my LHS Stock more of, and for some reason i just prefer them. Dont know why... Anyway i got my ESC RX wire re soldered inc bullet connectors http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00197.jpg My batteries now with bullet connectors too... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00193.jpg These batteries are HUGE!!! Not only are they fatter they are longer than my usual batteries!!! As you can see... its a very very tight squeeze in there http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00195.jpg Still in the process of grinding down the motor mounts, but its taking much longer than expected... I have gone through 4 dremel sanding drums and havent even finished one mount yet!!!! This is going to take a while... i need more drums! Here is a pic of the length of the motor in the chassis http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00196.jpg And last pic of it all sitting in their correct place minus ESC and servos..... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00194.jpg Hopefully all will be done over the weekend..... Thanks for looking Josh |
A little update... I decided to mount my ESC and work out a mounting position for the mechanical brake servo. I also found that my new steering servo arm is so long that it would come into contact with the motor. So i had to work out another way of mounting it.... Here is what i came up with... your opinions are much apprciated if you can better what i came up with...
OK FIRSTLY... The servo arm and relocation.... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00204.jpg When its mounted it is obstructed by the motor... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00205.jpg So i thought i would try it mounted on the outside... I dont like how its so vulnerable... but i guess many people do this sort of thing so it should be ok... Has anyone got any ideas for making a stronger longer linkage between the servo arm and the steering assembly??? http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00208.jpg I then had to move the mounting position of my Handle bar which required a little dremeling but its sitting nicely now... Its not really necessary to have it fitted but i am using it to protect the ESC.... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00209.jpg I then drilled some mounting holes for the ESC. Although its mounted high up... It is protected by the roll bar and sits right under the centre of the body and is clear or any possible damage. Also if i do run it in te wet... it will be well away from splashes (i hope... pshhh corrosion x is protecting it anyway) http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00210.jpg Here it is mounted http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00213.jpg I then decided to find a place to mount my second servo for the brakes... Now because i had to relocate my ESC Position due to the larger batteries at the rear... i had to use a position which i didnt really want to use... But oh well... What do you think??? Do you think there is enough space for the servo arm and all the linkages etc.....???? http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00214.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00215.jpg Close up http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00216.jpg I have yet to finish the Motor mounts... ITS IS BL**DY Hard!!!! Takes ages to grind it down with the dremel! Your help and ideas would be much appreciated!!! THANKS |
A few things arrived in the post today... A little update...
Titanium turn buckles Metal tie rod ends Brake Linkage kit Traxxas carbon wing Hotbodies wing mount http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00225.jpg After looking at how the wing and mount would fit, i was suddenly very worried about how much of my fibre glass body i was going to need to cut. I dont want to ruin my Rear GCM decal * So it got me thinking and i may use the wing mount and a second wing on my Basher Desert rat body (which is being painted at the moment... pics will be up end of the week) But for the time being i was thinking of directly mounting my Carbon wing to the Fibre glass body???? It may not take the biggest pounding but this is just my road body anyway.... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00226.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00227.jpg What do you think??? I didnt realise how much of the body i was going to have to alter... and i REALLY dont want to do that. Also i finally decided on mounting both steering and brake servo on the inside of the chassis. I will use a shorter alu servo horn for the steering so it doesnt come into contact with the motor, and i will use my long alu servo horn for the brake which gives enough clearence to mount my brake linkages perfectly... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00219.jpg As you can see in the pic below... The alu servo horn is located perfectly just outside the tvps for the brake linkage. http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00220.jpg Ill try and get the brake linkage mounted today.... |
a few lil updates...
When trying to fit my metal tie rod ends to my titainium turn buckles... i noticed that they would only screw on one end. I think this is due to the fact that one side of the turn buckle has a reverse thread which allows you to adjust them when fitted. So i am quite annoyed but live and learn... Ive got them fitted only on one side and platic rod end on the other... But what ever... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00228.jpg Started my brake linkage too but i dont have a long enough rod so will go to my LHS soon and pick one up... otherwise its coming together slowly... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00229.jpg After looking a little more at the Wing, i dont think i would be happy with it mounted to the body... so im going to wait for my PRC mount to turn up and take it from there... here is another pic... as you can see, it just doesnt look right... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00233.jpg |
So Another Update... I cant keep up with the postman!!! Anyway a few things arrived again today.....
Some Monster Energy Decals.... Turnigy Temp gun.... Orange Mesh Protector stuff (looks crazy and protects your wires... Cheap stuff too) From HobbyKing HPI Rush Battery box Enjoy the pics *8) * http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00234.jpg Fitted a couple decals to the body to brighten it up a bit... They are shiny * ] http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00249.jpg The mesh is great... it freys very easily but nothing a lighter cant fix.... Changes the internals of the truck by brightening it up and makes it clear where the wires are... http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00238.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00239.jpg In order to get everything to fit nicely in the battery box which i am mounting at the front of the truck once my PRC Rush battery box mount comes. I had to cut a larger inlet for all the wires, and run the wires through the centre of the shock tower... THIS SHOULD BE FINE RIGHT???? * My receiver is hidden in there with my Y harness for my ESC and Mechanical brakes including my Steering servo wires. It sits very tight against the body as you can see, but it should be fine. http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00243.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00246.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00245.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00247.jpg |
As i received a lot of help from you guys on this forum i thought i would show what i have been working on and copied my progress from another forum... Lots of pics etc... hope you dont mind
|
:surprised: :surprised: :surprised:
Awesome build man! Do you know where I can buy those FG bodies? It seems like they would be more durable than Polycarbonate. I love that orange cable sheathing- it really accents the truck, especially with the blue lights and blue batteries. :mdr: |
Thanks man! You can get the Fibreglass bodies only from UK Ebay but the guy ships internationally and he is great to deal with! I wouldnt recommend fibreglass for extreme bashing as it doesnt offer any flex when landing and it can crack, but when you are doing road runs or light bashing it is fine... I bouught it because i kept sliding on my lid at 50mph on the road...
link on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WHITE-FIBREGLA...ht_3180wt_1165 |
got to get me some of those blue lights for my crawler. nice truck you have
|
Other than the esc being in a funny location, thats an awesome build
I would run a mounting plate across above the motor, and mount the esc on that so it sits lower, or maybe something over the lipos on a plate, just doesnt seem safe where it is now, even with a roll bar and fibreglass shell. With your ornage sheeving ( nice stuff ), I would put some extra heatshrink tubing over the ends & the bullets again, just to tidy up the ends and prevent fraying. Where abouts you from exactly ( in the UK I take it )? |
Very nice build thread. The more pictures, the better.
I can see why you have that extra wire on the ESC for series connection, but you can simply connect the batteries in series without that extra wire (since they're bullet connectors). Connect one red to black on each battery, then plug one red and one black from the batteries to the ESC. Pictured below: Unless you had another reason why you installed that extra wire there? http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...hap/series.png |
thanks you... espeically for the criticism.
neil - Firstly i orginally had the ESC mounted above the batteries... but due to my new batteries being so large i had to move them forward....Here is a pic of where it was mounted... I cant mount it too far forward otherwise i wont be able to connect the batteries, and the second brake servo gets in the way... I have now moved it furthur back under the roll bar and it also sits lower in the chassis. I was never happy with it mounted to high up http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/IMG_0270.jpg I moved it back yesterday from its most recent position. I am going to have to sand the spur gear shroud a little so it sits nicely. http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00252.jpg I feel much better with it sitting there.... Where i had drilled two holes, i have now put a brace along that point just to strengthen everything up a little. Regards to the shrink tubing... i will do that, i just havent got large enough tubing at the moment. And neil i am live in London UK.... RTOC thanks a lot man! - This is my first brushless truck... i WAS a nitro person, but they just do not compare do they!!!! I know how dangerous all these lipos can be and how fragile these ESCs are.... so in all honesty i knew i could fit them like your diagram shows but i didnt want to risk blowing anything.... If that is the case... it means one less LEAD :mdr: Also if i was going to use one Single 5s Battery.... Would i just connect one red connector to one side of the ESC and black connector to the other???? Thanks a lot for the help and pointing these things out! |

I like those shells too, little ££ for me but I may find a standard lexan version for my TXT-1- 18" wheelbase is about the same as your savage I think. Cant wait to see it up and running  |
Thanks for the help buddy... Gave it a little test run to day just to see that the car is all lined up and everything... But ITS A BEAST!!!! I lost a wheel nut so that cut my session early.... The motor and esc is running quite hot... What sort of temps should i be reaching MAX... if its quite high i may have to gear a little lower.....
Vids coming soon... once i receive my new lock nuts... |
Get some blue threadloc while your at it- I lost a wheel & stripped a hex as a result last trip out, silly really as I have 3 tubes of the stuff at home :sarcastic:
Max temps ( general guide lines ): motor 180*F max, ideally 120-160*F esc 160*F max, ideally 120-140*F lipos 120-140*F max, ideally... less. Also as a general rule: hot motor + cool esc & batts = undergeared cool motor + hot esc & batts = overgeared warm everything = just right hot everything ( or hot esc and motor since massive lipos take alot to heatup ) = way overgeared. With your 1520 motor & 5s lipo, you should be able to gear for around 35-40mph ( maybe 45mph+ with 6s- depends on temps really ) quite happily I'd have thought- doesnt sound all that fast but these big trucks are a real handful with that much power on tap, they soon cover a field or football pitch sized area and need room to slow down again  |
As i only did a short run and didnt record temps ill have to check next run. Didnt want to run any longer not knowing the temps....
I did notice that the fan was on quite a lot of the time on the esc, but many people say that theirs is on. Im very tempted to work out a way of installing my own custom fans which remain on at all times. Thanks for the info neil! ill use that as a general rule of thumb... 40mph is a little slow... My exact gearing is shown below... I was easily hitting 50-60 on short grass today!!! It was just as fast if not faster than my standard flux with the torq2200 i may gear it down to a 17t clutch bell. Differential Ratio: 3.2222222222222223 Transmission Ratio: 1.5366847826086956 Other Ratio: 1 Spur Tooth Count: 44 Pinion Tooth Count: 21 Total Voltage: 25.2 Motor KV: 1600 Tire Diameter (inches): 5.5 Tire Ballooning (inches): 0.5 Motor Current Draw: 0 Motor Coil Resistance: 0 Spur/Pinion Ratio: 2.1 : 1 Total Ratio: 10.37465 : 1 Tire Circumference (inches): 20.42 inches (518.68 mm) Rollout: 1.97:1 Total Motor Speed: 40320 RPM Vehicle Speed: 75.15 mph (120.72 km/h) Effective KV Value: 1600 KT constant: 0.85 oz-in/A Motor Torque: Amperage not specified... " Vehicle Speed: 75.15 mph (120.72 km/h) "
:surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: :surprised: That would be why it's running so hot... Even if you aren't reaching those speeds (which you're not) the electrical system is still under lots of stress. Try for something at least below 50 mph and see how it goes. |
Yea that's some tall gearing. I'm geared for 40-45mph on my XXL running a 1521 and that's kinda pushing it. Motor never got over 130 but it was only 12-14C outside.
|
Yeah, that'll be why its running hot.
I know everyone wants a super fast truck, but to reach those kind of speeds, you'd need a more powerful esc and much larger motor, in a truck weighing this much. I'd say something like a HV boat or plane esc sold by Castle would be great as you're using mech brakes ( no need for esc brakes or reverse ), and run more like 8-12s lipo with a ~1000kv Neu 1527 or 22xx series motor. The 1520 is a large motor, but it physically cant pull that gearing in a truck that weight ( the 1515 tops out at about 65-70mph max in an emaxx or erevo weighing 9-10lbs on 6s lipo, gearing higher just causes more heat from current draw, but wont make the truck go any faster )- you are asking the impossible pretty much :rules: Definately gear for 40mph and see how it does, otherwise you will indeed need a more powerful motor and esc... |
lol that gearing was my fault...
I have a new 18t pinion and 47spur coming and it should lower my top speed to 55mph on 6s. Ill see how my temps fair after that... Cant run at the moment as i lost a wheel nut on my last run and waiting on the replacements.... Anyway in the quest to keep my weight down... i no longer use the heavy fibre glass body and managed to finish painting my desertrat body... what do yall think??? http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00265.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00264.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00267.jpg http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC00266.jpg It came out well for a first paint job :) |
Indeed, that looks great.
The wing seems a bit undersized compared to the shell, might be worth looking at a proper baja or other 1/5 scale item, but it looks alright really. |
Oh neil!!! Why did you have to point that out lol It does look undersized in the pictures.. .but looks acceptable in person... DAMN now i am going to go look for a larger wing! Thanks for helping me spend my money neil lol
|
Nice job on the body. I think the wing looks fine 'cause it lines up with the points on the back end of the body.
|
NEW IDEAS!!! Help me
Thanks whats nitro... i think i will leave it unless i find something else... but not desperate.
I hope to have this badboy up and running by the weekend!!! Im dying to run it properly! The last few things on their way at the moment are: Wheel Nuts 18t mod1 pinion 47t steel spur my charging adaptor for the hyperions too... Thats all that needs to be done really... I dont have anything else to do??? Guys seriously... this truck is finished for the time being... What do i do? Do i begin building a second savage now? I know exactly what ideas i have for my next build ..... and possible changes to my current one..... Ok after being around here for the last few months... i have now realised that i have made a few mistakes with buying the tvps i had bought. Although i do love them as the handling is ridiculous... tames all those wheelies and puts the power too the ground... its just that bit too heavy for big top speed... but we will get back to the current savage furthur down.... So my next savage is going to be utilise an ext PRC lcg chassis which will use my current Neu 1520 motor and geared for around 40 on 5s (no 6s here, light weight batteries ftw) PLENTY OF CARBON PARTS - I will be using this for racing (found a track near me), and hard bashing (depending on what shocks i put on it) Back to my custom OVERKILL Plans:diablo: As for my current XXL Savage... i am going to create a speed machine/shelfqueen out of it. It wont be used to bash hard... it will be used to cover huge spaces in no time at all. It will still be kept as light as possible for what it is I have plans for an overkill setup for the large wheel base and wide footprint... I have decided on: - Two torque 2200 and 2 MMM powering this thing. OVERKILL I KNOW but for a heavier car... splitting the weight over two Motors should help take the strain away from oneand allow me to gear high without heating issues  I have been emailing dan at karshaw regarding motor mounts for twin setups. (as most of these mounts require you to mount motors up high in the chassis above the spur gear... this will no longer be safe to do jumps with (worried about ripping the motors from their mounts on landings)) I hope i will be able to make these mounts work with the reverse tranny and forward mounting on my DB-17 chassis....... Any of these motor mounts work with torq2200 motors? http://204.186.93.64/MotorMounts-Savage.html http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10...vageXMount.jpg http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/4/...-Savage700.jpg Batteries will be mounted on the inside of the chassis and outside utilising the original battery boxes. two sets of 6s:diablo: should be awesome! Anyway i see how this all goes... I just want to run my current truck at the moment and have some fun! I know exactly what i am going to do with my lightweight race savage but more help will be needed with this twin motor savage. Your ideas are most welcome! |
The dual mounts for 550 motors will work fine, not sure on the first one though due to the fins killing any clearance under the motor & between the mounting plate.
|
neil they wont work... im obstructed by the tvps. The motors are too large.....
Ive put this project on hold, but talking to dan at kershaw about making a custom mount. Running one motor above the spur and the second in the stock position below the spur... |
nice work and like the painted body must have taken quite some time in a project like that I like the orange covering for the wires I believe I have seen it in black where can I purchase the wire covering?
|
thanks for the props... The mesh for the wiring i got very cheaply from hobbyking... one of those things just to fill the package to my desired weight. VERY CHEAP! dont know why we havent seen more of it! It has saved my wires many a time!
|
Got a vid up... had a few problems with the pinion staying on, but the red loctite is holding it in place now...
My ESC, Lipo and motor temps are 50degrees c and below!!! Great temps... i was thinking about increasing the gearing but i am very happy with it... I will extract more speed by using an 8s for speed runs on the road. Cant decide on what ESC to get...??? http://s878.photobucket.com/albums/a...rent=001-2.flv |
122*F, those are great temps for sure. Looks to have plenty of power and is nice and sharp on the steering, I think you got that setup pretty damn well. As for a future HV esc, I still say wait for the Castle one to come out, shouldnt be too long now- cant beat having proper brakes and reverse..
|
Thanks a lot neil!
Its running nicely... i may lower it a little bit more so it handles a little better when im not jumping... Going out now to see if it can handle air with the extended chassis... Im in no rush just yet to go 8s but i will want to within the next month or so... So ill be patient and see what escs come out. I dont need reverse or motor brakes as my mechanical brakes are so much better and user friendly. Vids coming this afternoon :) |
i wasnt even thinking of driving the car today as it kept on raining on and off but as it was in the boot of the car and a full set of batteries, why the *censored* not...
Ive only run flat grass to make sure it was all put together before trying something a little more stupid... Short vid of jumping on tall grass, mind the driving, still getting used to it in the air.... I also took it out one more tonight on some gravel and dirt... too dark to get videos, but its 100X better and way more fun on these surfaces. Just need to find more areas which are disused... Will be updated with vids frequently when i can find better bashing spots. Thought i would also mention that temperatures are still cool to very cool... averaging 30-50degrees c... No damage was caused in the most recent videos... But after running this evening, i blew one of my dirt claws on grass whilst the truck was driving on two wheels... So frustrating!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXsXbNZXwSI and my first vid of the car running now on youtube... better than photobucket... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MsiR0mF2oc |
Its got TONS of zip! Its flying instantly! The temps sound great, sorry about the ripped tire! I would wait for the castle HV like Neil said.
|
im looking forward to the castle HV... do we know when its going to be around? Is this HV specific for cars? its not like their plane or boat ones?
|

With Savage flux, bulletproof diff 9/29, 44 spur and 21 pinion, the total ratio is 14.95606 : 1, not 10.37465 : 1 (definitely too high). Specifically: - pinion-to-spur (44/21) = 2.09 - first tranny reduction (44/18) = 2.44 - second tranny reduction (29/32) = 0.91 - total = 14.95606 Bye. |
im not running 44/21 anymore... im running 47/18... top speed is 53mph and after 20mins of hard bashing im getting temps of 100-120max
|
Quote:
Using the Top Speed Calculator with 47/18, You get a max speed of 36.85 mph (a bit more if You assume Lipo at max charge of 4.2 volts per cell), not 53mph. Bye. |
awww. but you have probably forgotten to take into account tht i am using the flux high speed idler which essentially locks the tranny in second gear... Instead of using the savage flux tranny use the savage x 2nd gear
