10x15x4
So over the weekend the Slash 4x4 destroyed it's 3rd 10x15x4 bearing that the slipper rests on. Never found any of the balls, or one of the rubber seals. I had to pry the top part of the bearing out of the aluminum mount.
So anyone else going through bearings? I have tried a few Traxxas replacements and now have decided to ask for some advice on a better brand bearing. I am going to hit up the LHS tonight to see if they have something that will work for now, but I really am in need of a good long lasting replacement. |
Ive read about some guys running a smaller bearing inside of the 10x15x4 on the slipper shaft, instead of the plastic (melt down) cone washer. IDK if it would work with the center diff.
|
As far as I know this is the solution to that problem.
It's a bit pricy, but there are 2 bearings included, but how much cheaper is it over time to repeatedly destroy 10x15x4 bearings? Not counting the annoyence of replacing the destroyed bearings. |
check out avid bearings

I bought king heads, slipper adapter cone, that with the traxxas aluminum mount I figured I would go through less bearings. King headz came out with that mount after the fact I bought everything. I really don't feel like buying another mount.
I went to the LHS during my lunch and picked up a set of their bearings. I will see how well these last. They are again rubber shielded like the Traxxas ones. If they fail I will look into the Avid bearings or try something with a metal shield. |
reno911,
I bought a 5x15x5 bearing from Boca Bearing. This will replace the crap Traxxas bearing along with the adapter cone. With a few spacers, it can be made to fit with no issues. I have not had any failures with this setup. I just recently installed the new King Headz motor mount because it's cool and I'm a sucker for new parts :mdr:. Lemme know if you just want to try out the 5x15x5 bearing. I probably have an extra. |
Cool thanks.
I have two 10x15x4's to burn through first. |

I just bored out a stock mount for the 10X19X5:

Not too shabby.

Interesting thing though: I decided I wasn't going to run my 4X4 until I got a STRC aluminum mount. Having the aluminum mount, I am the only one at my track (out of 20 cars) that has had problems with the center bearing (twice: once it seized and then a second one blew up completely). A friend of mine suggested that the heat from the motor, being conducted through the aluminum mount to the bearing, caused the bearing lube to thin and run out leading to my bearing failures. That's why I did the mod to the platic mount first. (Also, it was the first time I had ever used a boring head and I didn't want to "experiment" on a $25 mount when I could do it on a $4 mount.) |
I sold my Slash 4x4 after that bearing blew up on me in 2 different a mains ! The last one was an Avid bearing that I put in that same race day and it only had 4 runs on it when it blew up taking the center diff case and the spur gear out with it .
Bought a Hyper 10SC and have been VERY happy with it , the only things I have broken with it have been from my driving and not from something silly like that bearing . The King Headz mount looks too be THE fix for this problem though and its what I would try before investing in expensive bearings that are still gonna fail after a while . |
I've blown my rear input bearing on hyper 10 too. At least it don't traction roll like the slash.
|
With 2 4x4 Slashes I go through these bearings frequently. I just bought a few packs and replace them every few runs.
Thanks for posting the KH's part, thats surely looks like the fix. |
I just saw that FLM now offers a mount for a bigger bearing as well, together with an aluminum centerdiff housing: FLM 2600

I just went through another two bearings, this time she killed the slipper as well. Wish I took some pictures. It appears the bearing seized and the heat built up on the aluminum slipper backing and caused it to crack f'd up the spur and pretty much everything. I had some extras but if she keeps dying on me I am selling the Traxxas aluminum mount and getting something with a larger bearing.

I just got back from holidays and my kingheadz mounts was on the table waiting for me....i installed it today and it's awsome....way smother then the stock mount and bearing
I think the next upgrade for that area of the truck will be just the FLM center diff cup (FLM26010) If i would have seen the FLM motor mount before i ordered the KHZ one i probobly would have bought that kit |
Well now I have two Slash 4x4's and they are both on the side lines. It only took one run on a 3s pack with the VXL to melt the plastic adapter on the new one. My wife's had went through the last spare 10x15. So without wanting to splurge too much money for a fix I went with the Boca 5x15x5. I will be installing one on each truck. I hope this solves the problem for once. If not they will be put aside until I can splurge for the KH parts.

I would suggest ordering this from Mike!
Manufacturer: FastLane Machine Part#: FLM26200 Motor Mount Kit Details Made in the USA Motor mount machined from billet 6061 aluminum Diff cup machined from billet 7075 aluminum Increased bearing to an 10x19x5 for durability Eliminates bearing failure Retains stock slipper set up as an option Direct replacement Includes all necessary hardware Price: $57.00 http://www.fastlanemachine.net/prodi...ount-diff-.gif |
I will most likely purchase one if the Boca doesn't last. Time will tell.
|
I found a 5x10x4 bearing lying around and slipped it into the 10x15x4 and it has been a decent fix for the waiting time I will have to endure for the Boca. Which should be here by today.
|
Got the Boca's 5x15x5 yesterday, went to Ace Hardware to pick up some 5mm washers and got them installed in both the 4x4s. I hope that this is a fix, especially for the one running the MMM/2650. As for the stock VXL, I think it will be a permanent fix. I am still pondering putting a larger 5x15mm washer in front of the bearing in the mount to keep dirt from getting in on that side, that is if I can find one.
Kind of a bummer that this truck takes everything I have dished out for it and that freaking bearing fails almost every time. Boca, better be the answer. Or I am going huge, flm probably. |
i wanna see a mount that uses the good ole 8x16x5 most common and very durable...

With 2 Slashes I go through bearings fast but at least they are cheap and easy to swap out. |
I blew 3 of those bearings running the slipper; when i put the center diff in it, the problem stopped. This may be just a cuwinkydink, but installing the diff did seem to take some of the strain away from the rear of the truck.
|
I had more probs w/the CD than w/the Slipper eating bearings ?
|
knock on wood but im still running the original one that came in my platinum and it was an early platinum too. but id rather see the 8x16x5 as its a very strong bearing and the most common bearing in r/c.
|
If your still running the original I would strongly suggest you at least check if you haven't, you'll save yourself the PITA of ordering a few cheap parts and down time if you catch wear now. WHen the bearing goes it'll take other parts with it with the heat it'll make(found out myself the hardway)
|
just had it out the other day when i put the slipper in to get better drive out if the corners. seemed perfect to me. ive checked it often because so many guys have trouble.
|
Then you are of the few whom are lucky ?
Have you made some sort of shield to help debris from getting to the bearing from the top ? |

no shields, didnt seal the front, nothing. i do clean my car and do proper maintenace nothing special.
altough i cant keep diff bearings in my 808 10 spec for the life of me. |
Have the original in my slash too..... Makes me think it might be better to replace it with a larger one before it causes any problems. Don't remember off the top of my head, did this require any mods other than the larger bearing?
@ rootar, went back to the slipper as well, like you said it seems to pull harder on exit than the cd on my setup. Disreguard the mod Q did some reading |
well im gonna turn the stock bearing spacer down to 8mm and the stock mount out to 16mm and walla i shall install 8x16x5.....

FLM originally did their mount with the 8X16X5 but changed to the 10X19X5. When this came up I did calcs on the bearing volume (as a quantitative way to compare size). The original 10X15X4 has a volume of .392 CC, the 8X16X5 has a volume of .753 CC, but the 10X19X5 has a volume of 1.02 CC (CC - cubic centimeter). So the 10X19X5 is 33% bigger ((1.02 / .753 * 100) - 100) than the 8X16X5. Plus, if you use the 10X19X5 you only have to modify one part and everything else remains standard, stock, and easily replaceable. |
