ACEPow 4s1p Hardcase battery
I recently purchased a ACEPow 4s1p hardcase battery. Sure, some will say that I wasted my money on an a unknown. But wouldn't it be nice to see what the unknown is capable off? I wanted the battery to have wires coming out of the casing, instead of those goofy 4mm bullets deal. It got build and send to me. It did come with the clone Deans connector and the fit and finish is just not there. It didn't come with an overkill 8awg power wires, but rather 12awg. I cracked the baby open and found 4 Gens Ace cells in there. I still haven't found anytime to actually run the battery in any of my vehicles. First it's just too hot and second family time. I did however run 1 cycle with my charger through it in my hot garage.
Garage temp 97.9F Battery temp after first charge 98.5F. After 20A discharge rate, temp 111F. Second charge 98.5F at 20A and 5025ma went back in. Resistance of the cells 1.1, 1.1, 1.3, 1.1mOhm. Shuffing 20A into the pack doesn't raise the battery temp. It's getting the amps out, raises the temps. When I get a chance to run the battery, it will have the EC5 connector in place. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...t/DSC00515.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...t/DSC00508.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...t/DSC00303.jpg |
I've two of 2s 5300mah 30c ace lipos and I love them except hardcase. On a hot day race lipos puffed a little but after cooling down the cells went back to their previous form but the case didn't. I tought allways hardcase lipos are more suitable for offroad use but I'm not sure anymore.
BTW where did you find 4s Ace lipos? They are very hard to find.. |
Interesting how much they warmed up with just a 4C load on them, though I guess ambient temps & the constant load right down to LVC play their part. Seem like they would also be okay to remove from the hardcase & add your own shrink wrap if you so desired- its always hard to see whats happening inside a hardcase, -damaged cells or puffing etc.
|
Neil, it's the discharging that gets them hot.(insert LincPimp comment here). Charging them at 4C didn't increase the cells temps.
|
I ment discharging- 4C load = 5000mah cells being discharged at 20amps
|
have you had a chance to run this battery yet? i am thinking about getting one.
|
Ah yes, I did get to run the battery and it performs well. I charge it at 20A with no problems.

Good review I just purchased 2 of these in 2s off hobbypartz.com
|
I am also looking at getting cheaper li-pos as well. HobbyKing just takes to long to get and the shipping price...ugh! These may be a good alternative to the Zippys and such.
I have a n onroad project in the pipeline that needs to run 2 4s batts together so for $ 80- a set...not to bad at all |
Also on their site are Blue Li-po...any one have any ideas if thgey are good?

I'll add a review of the 2s packs I got once arrived. http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-40c-50...-hardcase.html |

I am tired of waiting 3+ weeks for the Zippys and these seem to be a great alternative |
Any other place to get these except Hobbypartz? Worldwide shipping needed.

Hobbypartz has never had the battery's I Want in stock. So I started buying "These" on ebay work great, US shipper and unlike the Turnegy battery's they fit great in my T3R
I run stock 17.5 so 30c is plenty. |
I should have a decent review on these after tonight. Haven't raced all last week due to food poisoning, but tonight it's on like donkey kong.

Time for an update on the battery pack.
The original pack is still kicking butt after abuse. One cell reads a bit lower then the rest, but that was to be expected with the 3.0V cutoff. The pack would of lasted longer with a 3.2v cutoff. I still charge the pack at 30A. Now to the skinny with ACEpow. Build quality has gone down ever since they started to sell to hobbypartz. Cut throat pricing has lead to laying off half or more of the employees. The new packs don't have matched cells anymore. I even have one brandnew pack with a death balancing lead. |
HMMM, always the day after you receive something. I just received 3 packs, a 5000mah 40c 3s hardcase, and 2 5300mah 30c 2s. All the cells were balanced out of the box. I've only ran the 3s once in a vehicle that I haven't run any other 3s's in, so have no opinion on comparable performance, but it seems strong. Getting ready to go for run #2
|
Shame the quality has gone down, price is rite and ROAR approved! The only thing I like about ROAR approval is standardized sizing.
|
I cracked open my third Acepow 4s pack to check the balancing wiring. Turned out that the ground was misplaced. 3 cells read 1.1 and the last one 1.7.
|
Well, i was considering getting a few acegen packs, but after seeing the recent feedback, i think i will stick to my cheap turnigy packs. I have had pretty good luck with turnigy and flightmax packs.
|
I ordered me another 4s pack a few days ago for my Ebike. I'll see how the cells are matched. I've been using my other three 4s packs and one 2s in my Ebike. Two cycles a day for the past 3 weeks. I'm charging them to 4.1V per cell this time around to gain some life cycles. Time will tell how long they will last.

That thing has the guts that's for sure being able to push my fat ass around!

Was testing my 1/8 speed runner with some new ESC tweaks. During acceleration pulled ~174A@3.4V per cell, which is around 35C. This was my oldest 40C 4s1p 5000mah hardcase pack. Pack warmed up quick after that stunt. Car had a blow over around 70mph after hitting something and I called it quits for the nite. Side note, Tekin 222 firmware didn't work for me.

Final update on my oldest 4s1p Acepow and 2s1p packs.
Last time I used the 2s packs was a month ago. The 4s packs around two months ago. They have been used in my Ebikes after I kinda slowed down with my RC toys. I have been storing them in a metal desk in the garage during the summer and always use the FMA charger to put my packs in "storage" mode. Both the pair of 2s and 4p packs have finally swollen up and I had to get rid of them. All my A123's are still good. Those things are hard to kill. |
