Nick's Slash 4x4 "Powered by Insanity" Project

Hey guys,

I'm sure a lot of you know me from my Slash 4x4 videos here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/nicksourceUK
...If you are already a subscriber, hello fans! :D

I'd like to share with you my project. ;)

Powered by a Neu 1527, MGM X-Series and 6s Lipo, it boasts some serious power and I hope this weekend I get to do the first big test run, so stay tuned.

I've done a lot of custom modifications, from a 10mm stainless steel centre driveshaft, front mounted servo and other chassis alterations.

Neu 1527 next to Castle 2200kv:

Read and see it all here:
http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/96...pics-must-see/

I look forward to your questions and comments. :)

and by the way... it's not staying in the Slash lol  this is just something to waste some time on, before it is dropped into a 1/5th.

Nick.

brushlessboy16 12.09.2010 10:27 PM

You know an axe will do a much better job making a slash into 2 peices

Going to be a beast for as long as it holds together!

Nick 12.09.2010 10:39 PM

It's defiantly expected, lol.

First proper run tomorrow I hope, if the MGM holds up okay, had some issues programming it but all sorted now.

6s on 20/36 gearing. :) I have a video of it on 3s and 20/52 gearing, it was rapid.

The Neu 1527 is so so smooth, beautiful motor.

I've spent a little on beefing up some parts of the Slash, MIPs all around and fabricated a custom driveshaft (that joins direct to the outputs rather than using splines like stock). Obviously there will be an issue with flexing which I can't resolve easily, I've ordered a New Era roll cage which should help. Straight line runs until then!

That is simply MONSTER!!! You are going to strip the teeth off you spur gear....metal or otherwise.

reno911 12.10.2010 12:04 PM

Nick your 4x4 is insanity at its finest.

As usual I expect nothing more than videos of all the carnage!

Bondonutz 12.10.2010 02:06 PM

Beyond sick, hope the diffs hold long enough to have some fun ?

Can't wait to see some video ! ! ! ! !

snellemin 12.10.2010 02:51 PM

Killer Killer project.

KiZ 12.10.2010 02:58 PM

Amazing, I can't get over having a 10mm shaft in a 1/10th scale truck :D

Looking forward to videos

Bondonutz 12.10.2010 03:08 PM

On the other site you have that the 1527 is a "0.5Y", what KV is that ??

the diffs hold up great in the little 4x4 because the truck is so light and the tires arent wide enuff to make traction:lol:

Nick 12.10.2010 05:45 PM

Thanks a lot for the comments guys. :D

Diffs and slipper shaft are my only concern, I intend to be gentle for the first, oooo... 2 minutes at least, lol.

0.5Y is the 2500kv Competition Wind. :)

pmike33 12.10.2010 08:26 PM

I'm tagging along for this one! Ive watched your videos on YouTube and they are so entertaining to say the least, great job and keep it up!! Your videos have made me want to get the slash!! Tough truck thats for sure...

coolhandcountry 12.10.2010 08:33 PM

Hey Nick!
Nice to see you are still after the sick power.
Hope it doesn't fly to far up in the air.

suicideneil 12.10.2010 09:17 PM

Nick 12.11.2010 07:56 PM

Went out with it today, only a very quick run though as it was dark, didn't want anything to fall out and not be found!

Couple of pics with it all in, note that the wires are so long as I intend to put it in a bigger scale in the near future so don't want to trim them down. I tucked them in better before running.

First impressions?...

Wait for the video as I really can't describe how immense it is!!!

pmike33 12.11.2010 08:18 PM

Your NUTZ, and I LOVE it!! Keep it up....

I love all your youtube vids, BUT... you dont have enough, watched them all, so get busy filming sir!!

Awesome work.

Nick 12.18.2010 10:49 PM

Finally did it's first last run. http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/s...ault/smile.gif

I've decided to bring this project to a close, after today and running only around half throttle, these electronics are far far from their full potential. I've pushed the Slash 4x4 far beyond its limits but the limits of the MGM X-Series has not even been scratched. I'm wanting to quickly shift time and money, on to something that will find its true potential.

It ran with unforgivable power, just incredible, it weighs over a STONE and sits less than 5mm from the ground as the excessive weight pushes down on it, yet it drives so smoothly. It goes across all terrain like a TC would on tarmac, the power and efficiency is something that really has to be felt by the driver rather than described!

It ripped up my brand new Proline V3s on their first run.

And while I was in a small area, with almost no traction, it CUT through the snow, ice and grass, straight into dirt with insane speed and power. http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/s...fault/rofl.gif

But as I mentioned, it's potential just couldn't be unleashed and while I could just go to a massive field and set it off in a straight line, I just don't have the time or patience to keep prolonging my Slash's life, I want to show you what it can really do, in my next, dedicated project for these electronics. http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/s...fault/wink.gif

So with all the in mind, here's the pics and the video you've been waiting for. http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/public/s...ault/smile.gif

coolhandcountry 12.19.2010 10:23 AM

That is pretty good power.
I like it.

Nick 12.19.2010 12:04 PM

It's been bugging me the video didn't show it maxed out so going to do another video soon of my trigger right back to the palm of my hand, lol.

reno911 12.19.2010 01:21 PM

Another foam bites the dust.

Nick as usual you amaze me with the extent of fun one can have with a Traxxas Slash.

Nick 12.19.2010 08:56 PM

So much for a new set of tyres ey.

Your Sick Mr. Nick

Anxious to see video !

Nick 01.22.2011 08:08 PM

I got a couple of videos but I don't want to put them up. :( They don't do it justice.

I've found a place tomorrow I can actually do a full speed run (tyres permit!) so lets see. The amount of power is insane, it's too much and actually makes it almost unusable when you get around 50mph.

Still crazy fun and amazing to see go in person, lol.

brainanator 01.22.2011 08:54 PM

SICK snow run....popping wheelies in snow with those tires and heavy weight is impressive!

I love the youtube comment to try it with a 3S lipo and over gear it.....PRICELESS, LOLOLOL

Freezebyte 01.22.2011 09:28 PM

I"ll laugh my ass off if it catches fire like your Vorza did.

Dj_Sparky 01.22.2011 10:01 PM

1527 is a monster.

Nick 01.23.2011 01:54 PM

Ran it. Was silly fast. :O

Sadly it did one run, didn't even get to full throttle before magnet in motor shattered!

However, I did get a video, which will be up soon.

lincpimp 01.23.2011 02:04 PM

You blew up a neu magnet?

Nick 01.23.2011 02:17 PM

Yeah not too impressed, I realise that I was running over the RPM limit, (85000RPM, though I never did hit full throttle) so was aware of the risks but I've ran many cheaper motors under far higher loads with no issues.

I'd of expected Neu to of been more durable.

I'll be going to Lehner next, I started disliking Neu when I needed to take the can apart but they use 0.7mm grubs in the can, pathetic really, no chance of getting those out even with a decent driver they'd of just rounded.

florianz 01.23.2011 04:37 PM

hard to find the right words for that... power project... jesus...

go for a tenshock motor, they're six pole motors, have massive torque, and they have a special way to put the magnets on the rotor. they aren't too expensive, too. they just get into the 1:8 car market. look at the ""toro bl combo, the motor is made by tenshock.

Nick 01.23.2011 06:40 PM

Here she is:

brainanator 01.23.2011 07:52 PM

very cool, and very fast.
I was expecting the can to explode into pieces...any pictures of the broken magnet? was that last cartwheel what broke it? or was it not in the video?

The cartwheel at the end was caused from the magnet shattering and locking the motor, it turned my slipper into a jigsaw puzzle as well, lol.

If Neu didn't put stupid little grubs on the can, maybe I could get in and take pics.

Dj_Sparky 01.23.2011 07:55 PM

85K RPM? How'd you get that high?

brainanator 01.23.2011 07:57 PM

Makes sense Nick. Sorry for your loss. Bust out a hack saw and open that can up!

lincpimp 01.23.2011 10:25 PM

Mail it to neu, you will likely get another on the house...

The rotor may not have been wrapped (oversight?). I cannot see the kevlar coming apart.

Pdel from CC says they have test spun their wrapped maginet assys past 100k rpm without failure. I think you got a dud motor.

florianz 01.24.2011 02:54 AM

send it to neu, a friend's neu collapsed too, whithin specs. the kevlar7caarbon bonding blew off.
