The Nerd's Hyper

I thought I'd post up some pictures of my hyper 7 electric conversion. So far I've stripped the car down given it a good clean and installed the HV300 and some HB spiral R&P's. I also have a 1512 - 1800kv castle motor with blower fan, but I'm waiting on my RCMonster mount before I can install that. ESC and batteries are still to be decided along with new wheels and tires to replace the well worn out stockers.

Notice anything different?

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/w...1/P1050194.jpg

I redrilled the holes for the transmission and machined a slot, about 10mm further back and 1/2" to the right. It should help the weight balance a bit and also give me more room for the batteries to sit on the chassis.

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/w...1/P1050195.jpg

I like tight tolerances

http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/w...1/P1050196.jpg

I also lathed up some spacers for the back brace.

HV300 eh? Talk about overkill! I have the HV767 in my truggy and even that on 2S has torque and speed to spare. I have been really impressed by that servo.

Are you going to run a 3S RX pack?

Aussie Nerd 03.07.2011 05:49 AM

I had it left over from my Super crawler, from before I switched too 7980s, but yeah definitely overkill  I dislike RX packs so probably a CC bec pro so I can run it on 12v. Otherwise I've got a few spare standard CC becs I can set to 9v for the time being.

very nice mate, how many cells u running? lm only doin 3s speedpassion motor

Aussie Nerd 03.07.2011 06:34 PM

When I get around to it I will be order 2x2s and 2x3s, so I can bundle them as either 4s,5s or 6s. But most likely I will run 5s.

3s? That's very low for a 1/8th. Low kv, high voltage is much better for temps and amp draw. Now if only they made a 12s capable MMP:lol:

I'm digging the move over, makes for lots of extra room. Puts more stress on the driveling though.

It is hard to say put that buggy looks hands down exactly like my Raze...

Ohs wells!

Cool build, look forward to the battery set up.

edit: Had a thought, will the lid still fit with the motor that far over... I know mine have low clearance on the sides.

Aussie Nerd 03.07.2011 09:14 PM

I don't think it will add much more stress, the dogbones are well within their rotation angle limits. I was thinking of getting centre CVs if needed, but we'll see. As for the body, it will fit but I have to rotate the motor so the wires are out the side. I hadn't even thought of that before you mentioned it:lol:

Hyper-5 03.08.2011 01:12 AM

well atm my top speed is 99km/h

Aussie Nerd 03.08.2011 02:05 AM

70-80 will be plenty enough for me, this electric conversion was more for ease of use than for speed.

Kieren

Hyper-5 03.08.2011 02:13 AM

lm still not happy with my speed, l want the 3 digit mark, might have to change the spur to a 44t

Aussie Nerd 03.08.2011 02:30 AM

At that kind of speed your pretty much limited to speed runs, which get old fairly quick, plus there is no way you could bash at 100+km/h:lol:

Kieren

Hyper-5 03.08.2011 03:24 AM

on-road it hit 99km/h, on grass it went 80km/h but my front wheels exploded

rootar 03.08.2011 09:05 AM

you need to put some coned washers under those motor screws or swap them out for a cap head with a flat washer.

Aussie Nerd 03.08.2011 06:44 PM

Nice idea, I think I've got some cone washers floating around here somewhere.

Rather small update, but I have designed the battery tray. It will be machined out of delrin sometime when I get around to it. Also sorry about the wireframe view, but my 6yo graphics card doesn't like shaded views so it will have to do till I get a new one.

Did a little machining this afternoon. Just need to drill the holes to mount it. It turned out a little different to the CAD, but it will work fine.

Turnigy trackstar and 10s worth of zippy packs ordered. If only they would actually come in 3 days like the shipping says:lol:

Aussie Nerd 03.15.2011 08:29 AM

Don't need tires any longer, ended up going with a set of suprasales badland copies. They didn't have them on spoked wheels like I wanted but they will do anyway. Now it's time to finally get this old girl going...

Kieren

Aussie Nerd 03.23.2011 07:50 AM

Very minor update but my CC bullets came in. Still wanting on my HK and suprasales orders, hopefully soon.

I haven't got any straps long enough for anything bigger than 3s, so I'll have to flog some straps off Bundy Racer. Now I just need to grease things up and hope the wheels come tomorrow.

Kieren

Aussie Nerd 03.24.2011 11:12 PM

Wheels did not turn up, so it looks like i'm out of action for atleast another weekend:diablo:

Kieren

Aussie Nerd 03.25.2011 05:18 AM

I couldn't wait so out came the stock tires, or should I say 3 stock tires and one stock rim:lol: I was just running on 3s around the house, mainly to get the gear mesh right and fiddle around with radio settings. I ended up going with -20 expo just to smooth it out. With linear it was just a bit jolty starting off, but now it seems to be a good balance between take off and smoothness.

Kieren

Aussie Nerd 03.30.2011 02:16 AM

I have a feeling it might want a bigger pinion/smaller spur. The ESC is ice cold but the motor is getting warm. The strange thing is I've been ready about 1:1 rollout being a bit of a sweet spot, and it's already around 1.2:1 with the 17t? I might just put a 16t in there and see if it gets hotter or cooler, easy way to find out.

Kieren

Aussie Nerd 03.30.2011 02:52 AM

Well I just tried the 16t. It seemed (I have no way I've truly measuring this, I need to flog bundyracers laser thermometer sometime) to run cooler for the first part of the run and then when I started really hammering on it (harder than with the 17t) it didn't seem to get any hotter than before when I was being gentler on it with the bigger pinion? I really need a proper measurement here as I can only go yep feels cooler now sort of thing.

Aussie Nerd 04.01.2011 09:28 PM

Finally got some pictures. First two are from the maiden run, last is a more recent one with the 15t pinion.

This video is a little better. Also for the record Bundy and I managed to get to jump almost the length, and with a bit more shaping of the jump it should be able to do the whole length.

I though i'd put a quick update. It seems I cannot kill the old girl, The most damage I've done is bent the antennae tube and that's despite landing on upside down, or completely missing the down ramp with about 10m long 4m+ high air.

The CC 1512 1800 is awesome on 5s, I'm half temped to chuck the two 3s in there just for a bit of 6s fun. Plenty of power to throw the car around with ease.

The trackstar is still going strong too. I thought I wrecked it the other day after it got a bit of splash from driving through a puddle by accident. I thought I saw smoke, so I shut it down immediately and proceeded to remove the case and see if it had cooked. But I only found half a ton of dirt inside the case, which I blew out, put it back together and it's been fine since. Also I found the fan would always fill up with dirt and grass so I removed it, and I don't think it's actually any warmer than before. It appears to be the exact same model fan as the one in the CC blower. I have also removed the CC blower, as the fan has packed up in it also, and I have a feeling it is blocking more air flow than it is promoting it. I haven't tested temps without it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they go down. All in all I'm very happy with it and it's an awesome buggy just to bash on without worrying about breaking it.

Kieren

Aussie Nerd 12.06.2011 08:32 PM

After coming to the belief that my trackstar had died this buggy had been sitting on the shelf for quite a while now. However I never bothered to send it in for warranty, and the other day I just tried plugging it in for the sake of it. Too my surprise it fired up. Although it didn't last long, it only fired up on 2s or 3s, but as soon as you plugged in 5s it would die. So I pulled it all apart thinking I might have a bad solder joint somewhere, or something like that. Instead I found the caps were in pretty bad shape. 2 out of the 3 were bulging at the end. So into the toolbox I went and found two dead 70amp Suppo/HK plane escs, both with 3x 370uf 35v caps on them that looked in good order. Considering the trackstar had 480uf caps on it (from memory), I didn't know if just the three smaller caps would be enough, but removed the old caps, and soldered on 3 newly donated ones in the original place on the board. It worked, the new caps fixed the 5s problem and it seemed back to normal.

As I said before though I wasn't sure if the new smaller caps would be enough, so I made a little cap bank with the remaining three with a bit of delrin sheet and soldered that on. The total of 6 smaller caps ended up giving an extra 780uf capacitance, so hopefully that should smooth out the ripple voltage a little also.

Now apart from the new and improved ESC, the car got a new body. It's an old axial xc1 from my old rock crawler that I trimmed to fit the hyper. Fits well in my opinion and is something different from most. I've got got to make up the rear mounts and it's good to go.
