9L vs 10L vs 7XL (14 cells)
Just curious..what kind of speed difference would I be looking at if I changed from a 9L to a 10L or 7XL on 14 cells?
I love the speed of the 9L, but it runs a little on the hotter side. Would either of the other two lower temps? Would I be able to gear up on either one to get the same speeds as I get with the 9L (16-18/70)? And finally..if I went with the 7XL, would it be too much for the following upgrades I already run: -MIP rear CVDs/RCBest Front and Center CVDs -Single Speed Tranny w/UE Idler -NovaRC (Front)/FLM (Rear) Aluminum Diff cups with stock spider gears (Rear also has Modified Robinson Ring/Pinion) Everyone raves about the XL series..but if I can't get 9L-like speeds or if I have to upgrade to the pricier UE cvds and spyders..then I'd rather not... Sorry for all the questions! Kinda new with brushless and although I've learned a lot, there's still LOTS MORE to know! :018: |
7XL and 10L will be slower than the 9L unless you gear up.
I reccomend the 7XL, I run it on 14 and it is a hoot. Quick and powerful and won't get hot. You'll be fine with that setup on a 7XL. |
The 7xl gets my vote to. Your driveline should be fine with the mods you have for 14cells. You may want to get a bigger pinion though. 20 66 should be a good starting point.
I ran my 10l on 14 cells, was alot of power, didnt get too hot, enough to keep my finger on it, but id say 7xl, it should be even better.
speed wise..how big/small of a difference am i looking at with a 9L (16/70) and a 7XL at 20/66 (~21/70) as CHC recommended?
My calculations suggest about a 10 mph increase in speed. I've never used a 7XL, though, so I'm not sure how they run in the real world.
I've run a 9L and 10L on 14 cells, both were close in terms of speed (with gearing changes) and they both are way too hot for my liking. I run about 7 mins in practice and they are VERY hot (180-210). For the races, I only need 5 mins so they are usually 170-200, I let them cool then run again. When my 10L dies, I'm getting an XL or one of the Lehner 1950's.
Yeah..that's why I'm think the 7XL. Just curious about the speed differences with a 9L on 16/70 gearing compared to a 7XL on like a 20ish/70 gearing
My take, you can compensate for the lower kv with gearing. Do the 7XL, then let us know how it is.
BTW..what's the runtimes like on a 7XL w/14 cells?
about 15 minutes, depending on your drivestyle.
the 7XL or 10L gets my vote too. |
Yeah..I'm leaning towards either the 7XL and 10L, too.
Hey Serum..how much of a speed difference would there be from those two as opposed to the 9L? Or would I be able to get same/higher speeds after gearing up? And does the 10L run cool enough compared to the 9L that I should consider it? |
I use a 10l in my savage, and depending on how I drive it depends on how hot it will get. Most days it does not get too hot. It will get warm but nothing blistering. I will be using 16 cells on it soon to see what kind of difference there is and maybe going to a 9 or 10xl
I run a 10L on my g2r, i run it on 16 ib4200's, i am getting a 10xl, this is so because i am loosing runtime due to the motor getting hot, but on 14 cells the 10L ran fine, no problems what so ever.
Sylvester: what types of runtime were you getting with the 10L on 14 cells?
Assuming I will only run on 14 cells, should I just upgrade from a 9L to a 10L than a 7XL? Still curious about the speeds, too. On correct gearing for each, what kind of speed differences am I looking at between a 9L, 10L, and 7XL? |
I get about 10 mins of runtime on my 10l with 14 cells.
As far as the speed thing, I can't help you there I have only run the 10l and I don't know the speed of that thing. |
I was getting an easy 13-16 minutes on Gp3300's. My speeds were around the 38mph area. Now with 16 cells, im around 42-45.
All those speeds will be similar, if they are geared for what they are supposed to do. But out of those three motors id take a 7 xl. Why you ask? well... -Longer runtimes -Cooler motor-therefore more efficient -More power -Can gear up to compensate for lost top speed. Any more questions? |
Thanks! I am leaning towards the 7XL as well. What type of gearing is typical for a 7XL on 14 cells (32P, Stock spiders in aluminum cup)?
Definitely looking for a whole new setup..just picked up a 9920 from MetalMan. Just need the motor now. Oh..BTW..I have the "L size" heatsink/clamp on my 9L right now..what length screws would I need to get it to work on a XL motor? I remember reading this somewhere..but can't seem to find it now... |
BTW..what is the length on the XL cans? Still running stock chassis that's why...
I think it is like 74 mm long. That is not including the shaft though.
thanks CHC :)
To get the L/XL heatsink clamp to work on an XL..I need longer screws, right? what size? |
I would get the xl clamp. It covers the motor all the way and looks nicer. helps with cooling to.
Yeah..but I already have the L/XL clamp that I'm currently using on my 9L
Oh! I thought you was going to buy one. It is a 10mm difference in length. It screws in a few mm.I would go with 15mm or so.
Yeah..if I sell my current setup..I was debating whether or not to sell the heatsink I have as well. But then I'd have to buy a new one, meaning more money..LOL
Thanks for the screws info! :) |
If you get it off of mike.(the motor) Ask him to hook you up with the right screws for it.
good idea..I'll try that!
I have a 9L and 10L feigao motors. What gearing and how many cells should I use? 12, 14, or 16? I'll be using a 9920 esc.
16, how many teeth does your spur have?
72 teeth, but I can always buy another one.
