Hot bodies 1/8 diffs
I bought flm hybrid bulks and almost have all the parts.I just need 1 more hbsc 8028 43t bevel gear and I can put them together. Does anyone know where I can find one? It seems that no has it in stock. If someone has one for sale I would buy it.
thanks, Mike. |
Damn, the entire internet is out of stock it seems. However:
http://www.advantagehobby.com/produc...=67666&cat=970 due 26th and: http://cgi.ebay.com/101036-HPI-43T-S...item27bb16cb6b says its for the hpi trophy 3.5- it looks identical though so I'd guess its the same as the lightning buggy diff part... possibly. One last option: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Ofna-Hyper-7...item33687480c8 Those will be a direct fit for the FLM hybrid bulks, or just rob the ring gear and maybe the pinion too if the teeth dont quite match up perfectly with the HB gears- they should though really. Only $5 more than the HB ring gear on it's own + you get nearly a whole spare diff... |
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I found a place here in the states called Discount RC. It shows that they are in stock. Does anyone have experience with them?

I just got notice of a refund from Discount RC. I found another place. suicideneil have you heard of, or had any experience with this store http://rc4speed.com/index.php?route=...roduct_id=129?
Thanks, Mike. |
Never heard of them, but if it's a European website thats probably why ( I mainly come across English, American or Chinese sites )- they take paypal and creditcard so you should be perfectly safe if they dont deliver the goods. :)

I'm putting together one of my hybrid bulks, and I am trying to get the right number of shims. Is it normal to hear any noise from the gears? or should it be completely silent? I am using gorilla snawt on the ring and pinion. I tried it with 2 shims and had some noise. I tried it with 3 shims with more noise. No shims about the same amount of noise. 1 shim seems to be the best, but i can't get it completely silent.
|
It's not noise you should be looking for really, its much more about feel & smoothness.
Ideally the pinion gear shouldnt be able to move in or out more than a fraction- it shouldnt bind however as you rotate it / the ring gear once assembled. Likewise, the ring gear / output shafts shouldnt be able to move in or out ( side to side ) more than a fraction. Every diff is different due to maching tolerances but a few 0.2mm shims hear and there should do the trick; so long as the diff roates smoothly and doesnt bind or have excessive play, you'll be fine :) |
I have little to no play at all in the output shaft so I think I'm O.K.
Thanks again, Mike. |
Are you using the hybrids on FLM's extended chasis? If so, how well does your front drive shaft connect to the break?
|
I will be using my hybrids on FLM's extended chassis, but I don't have all my parts. I am awaiting the arivial of my ring gear from some where out of Europe. The main part that I am waiting for is the universal CD/engine mount. I recieved word that Mike is tweaking the mount and they should be ready soon. As soon as I get those parts I can complete my build. So for now I can't answer your question, but I hope I will be able soon. I will post pics of the build process here when I can.
|
The new CD/motor mount is now up for sale. I have one on the way. I hoping that the ring gear will come in the next few days. It is marked as shipped but it is coming from
Malta of all places so I don't know how long it will take to ship. |
Do you guys have any idea what size shims I should use to stop the little bit of side to side movement of the diffs?
|
|
So the same shims that I used for the pinion gear.
|
what are the part numbers for the spider 1/8 diffs (ring, pinion, etc....)? If I break the HB's then I will go to the spiders.
|
Feck-knows, but a quick search suggests:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...r-Differential complete diff http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...Bevel-Gear-Set parts Google + 'ofna' usually turns up useful results... |
Wow. Are they that much better. 180 bucks for front and back.do they come with the pinion?
|
Not $$ that much better really- they do have a metal diff cup but it's rare you ever see anyone have issues with the plastic ones ( much better material than traxxas uses... ).
Fairly sure they don't come with the pinion ( you can see the same thing I can regards the description )- rare that diffs ever do like that; you need to hit up ebay in order to get entire diffs which will include the pinion & bearings etc ( see post # 2 in this thread for some examples ). I doubt very much you'll have issues with the HB diffs though provided they are shimmed correctly + lubed with a little white lithium or automotive grease. |
I know this is a bit off topic, but I'm still trying to figure things out. On the speed calculator, found else where in this forum ,what do enter for the transmission? I have the current version of Mike's slipperential. I see RC monster's version 1 of the slipper and the misc center diff. There is a big difference in the final speed between the two. Is the second choice the correct one? I'm trying to get an estimate of how fast this thing will go.
|
If you are using a center diff unit like that, then enter 1 ( 1:1 ) as the transmission ratio- the spur and pinion will be the only means of direct gearing adjustment as such.
|
O.K. I have one hybrid bulk built (rear), and I just got the slipperential built. Assembly went well most of the way, but I ran into one problem. One the the slipper pads fit just like a glove, but the other two were a little miss shaped. I had to do quite a bit of sanding and filing to get them to fit. Is this normal? If it was not for that I would have had that together in no time at all. I'm still waiting for the ring gear HBSC 8028 (from Malta). If it does not show in the next week I may order one of the gears on Ebay (second post). I'm just a little unsure because the model number don't match.
|
Couldn't comment on slipperential issues, but there is a sub-forum dedicated to it here:
http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=45 I'm sure you'll get some help & pointers there. Bare in mind international postage, even from within Europe, can take a good 2 weeks to arrive sometimes, assuming it is posted the day after it was ordered. |
Well, I just bought one of the ring gears from ebayUK(2nd post). I still have not recieved my other gear. I'm sure that I'm just being impatient. If anything I will have an extra gear if something goes wrong.
|
Well, the ring gear came in. I should get some time this weekend to work on my Maxx. The center diff mount and some other goodies are suppose to be here tomorrow. I hope to have pics up soon.
|
I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the new universal mount. The top plate seems to be to long, and I'm not sure if the mount was made to be used with the 65t gear. Any suggestions? You can see the gear hitting the side of the mount, and the top brace is too long.

Well, I got a response from mike. just sent him an email, and 50t gear is the largest that can fit I just put in an order for the 46t gear and a few mod .8 pinions. I will play around with the gearing to get something similar to or better than the stock gearing.
|
It isn't too long, you need to use special inserts on either side where the bearings go in order to space out the front and rear upright parts further; the Slipperential is somewhat 'shorter' than a regular 1/8 centerdiff.
65tooth spur gear is massive though, you would normally only use such a gear on a transmission with an 18-24tooth pinion- with a CD, gears in the 40-50tooth range as what you should be using really with 9-16tooth pinions at most. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...&postcount=396 http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail.php?prod=rcmcdmm I suggest contacting Mike about the required custom spacers- the unit is designed to be universal but it wont necessarily be as simple as drop-in & go.. EDIT: Are you sure you need mod0.8 ( 32pitch ) pinions- the listed 46t & 50t spurs for the Slipperential are MOD1.0, so you need MOD1.0 pinions to match. |
Thanks as usual Neil. I thought I saw somewhere that the stock uses mod0.8. I will email mike to let him know.

A few new parts came in today.
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0013.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0014.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0015.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0016.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0017.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0018.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0019.jpg http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...c/DSC_0020.jpg |
Got the right gears coming (mod1.0....thanks Neil). Mike is also sending me the right length upper bracket, and I also waiting on a few more major parts that should be shipping today or tomorrow. I have RPM shock towers and a-arms that I was going to use, but I am now going to go with another option.

Does anyone know where I can get a pair of Gorilla maxx straps? Would the Gorilla Maxx carbon fiber brace work (G2-X brace)? I know my chances of getting either is pretty slim but if I came across the carbon fiber brace I would like to know if they would work.
|
I think the CF straps are designed to fit a very specific length of battery tray since they attach on top of a post either end & are secured with a body clip- chances of the FLM chassis having the same holes in exactly the right places is remote.
As for the velcro straps, they were nothing but overpriced regular straps with the GorillaMaxx logo silk-screened onto them- paying $20 for a couple $2 straps is crazy ( probably why I have 4 on my GMaxx  ). A much cheaper and stronger option is to make your own straps using something a bit more heavy duty, like so: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan94.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan95.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan96.jpg Very simple concept and lets you use any regular straps- you just need 2 per battery tray, quick google for 'battery straps' turns up loads of cheap options. |
Very cool idea. Thanks, I found a place in Europe that has both the Gorilla straps and the CF brace, with the exchange rate the straps and shipping worked out to about 74 dollars U.S. and the brace came out to about 110 dollars U.S. that would have been an expensive mistake.
|
So i received the new upper bracket for the cd mount today. I also got the 46t spur gear. I was hopping that the smaller gear would fit between the opening on the frame. No such luck. I guess I will have to do some work with the Dremel, unless there is another way. I can't be the first to try to fit a Slipperential to the extended FLM Maxx? Are there pictures of it mounted without having to hack the frame? I don't have a problem doing it, but if I have other options I will try them first.
|
The trouble is the new emaxx tranny is narrower than the old one, so the chassis rails are closer together as such- was never much of an issue on the older style FLM chassis for the 3906 tranny, but with the new chassis you don't have any option besides notching the chassis rails either for the spur to fit. On the upside, it should be very easy to do a neat job- just hacksaw or dremel the notches and then clean them up with a small flat or square file.
|
That's what I will do. I should have waited to do the anodizing until the end of the build. Oh well I'm learning as I go along.
|
Rebuilt the slipper with the 46 tooth spur, notched the chassis, and everything fit perfectly. I need to drill the holes and mount the slipper next. Then I need to figure out how long the dog bones need to be. Neil do you or anyone else know how much Mike charges to make custom dog bones?
|
Not sure how much Mike charges, you'd have to contact him directly. The only other company that used to make custom length dogbones was RCAlloys but they stopped making parts a couple years back sadly.
Usually though, guys go on a scavanger hunt to find dogbones from other vehicles that may be useful, then they work out the position of their CD or tranny based on that.. |
