The start of something new. Vintage TRX-1 build.
For years, I've always wanted to build a vintage rc car. After lots of research, I finally settled on the Traxxas TRX-1 (released in '91). I chose it because they are extremely scarce, and they were Traxxas' first majorly competitive model. Winning ROAR championships in '92 and '93. :D
I decided to go another route with this build. During my research, I found countless builds where the person only built a "looker"....sometimes they put modern electrics to run them. I'm going to take it one step further. Not only will all of the parts be "new", but I will be also installing "new" era specific electronics. In the end, she will still be a shelf queen, but she will run on vintage technology. :D Over the past few weeks, I have collected about 90% of the parts for the TRX-1. I've also managed to scrounge up all of my electronics. I aim to use as many vintage parts as possible, but in some cases (mostly int he hardware area) I have to buy items that were recently made (that have the new Traxxas label). Finally, some pics: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4227.jpg Over shot of everything that has arrived....still have a lot coming in the mail (mostly from the UK and Japan). http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4228.jpg The gem of the whole build. A Composite Craft double decker chassis. This thing is like super duper ultra rare and the best part is it is NOS (new old stock)!!! ^_^ http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4229.jpg The wheels/tires that I have received so far. I even managed to find some of the optional Traxxas hot pink wheels! All NOS of course. :) http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4231.jpg Various large plastic parts..... Continued......... |

There is a NOS Revtech stock motor in there. Continued....... |
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4237.jpg
I even stumbled upon the RC car action magazine from '92 when they discussed the TRX-1!!!!! http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4239.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4241.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4242.jpg Not everything was printed in color back then. :D Lookie at what else I found......... http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4243.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4244.jpg A NOS Futaba Magnum remote with rx, 2 servos and even the instructions!!!!! Continued again lol....... |
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4246.jpg
It uses a needle to show the battery voltage. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4251.jpg Hmmmmmm, what could this be? http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4252.jpg It's a NOS Tamyia Ni-Cd 1200 mah 7.2V battery from '89-'91! Not only does it come with the box and instructions, but it even works! ^_^ That's all the pics for now. Here's a list of parts that I'm still looking for...If anybody has any of these, let me know! 1662 1931 1942 1960 2711 2731 2734 2735 2752 2753 2761 2770 2771 2788 2789 2790 4650 4706 |
Very nice! This gives me inspiration to restore the Bullet I have.
|
I've got a trx-1, I've been collecting parts for here and there to restore someday. Looks like when your done there won't be anything left of the original! I remember that rcca issue, I still have it around here. I don't know if you have bought a body yet, I got one of the reproduction ones from bluegroove. It does look like the original, but will need to come up with something to hold the sides in, as they flare out when its all trimmed out. If you end up having an extra white trans case (used) i'd be interested in it. the one I have someone dyed all the plastic red on. I have pretty much everything in white to put it together with except for the trans cases.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for you. I religiously scouring everywhere for my last parts lol. |
That radio is sweet. I like the analog battery gauge.

BTW:, after lots of "waking up" the battery has gone from accepting apprx. 200mah. to as of an hour ago, 1,056mah out of 1200. The cycling on the charger did little. When I hooked a motor directly up to it, it really began to accept a charge. I think I may get a full charge out of in in a few more cycles. Does "Black Magic motor" ring any bells to you old-timers? It was a rather popular high end motor way back in the day. I have a NIB one coming. I also scored a NIB Tekin F-10 esc (which works perfectly)........... |

I guess I've been in RC for a while...I owned that radio and read that issue. Cool vintage build!
|
If i could make a couple suggestions,The stock slipper is dated and never worked right. I had an SRT that i built to race, I used a VXL slippershaft and old school mods inside the tranny, delrin top/aluminium idler/delrin diff. the plastic top gear fits the same on the modern shaft, handled 2s and 3s all day every day without fail. I'm pretty sure the top and idler are the same on all traxxas rustler based buggies or trucks
|
I'm not planning on running this gem much. It will probably never have more than an hour of use in its life...and that, only in a basketball court. ;)
I want to keep everything on it era specific. I am looking at getting a Team A&L power clutch though....... |
Too bad really, I had an SRT and it was a total blast. The one thing that stuck about it, On a really loamy loose track, It run and handled better than my T4. I was running 4* toe blocks in the rear and it would wheelie on sand and leave 1/2"tracks

Time for a very due update!

dang man! going all out on this thing....NICE!
|
Is the motor the ESP black magic motor? I remember those being torque monsters. If you run it at all, you might need the aluminum idler gear, even with the old new battery. I had a rebel esc, Still do. It's one step up from the F10 you have, tough esc and will live long, even with abuse
|

I have very little info on the motor. I have searched high and low and have found little about it. Having a name of "black magic" doesn't help the the search function either. I don't think there is an aluminum idler for the tranny. I did get the upper steel gear though. When I run, I will make sure the clutch is loose anyways. :) |
Alright, a small update before the mecca arrives (today or tomorrow). :intello:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4332.jpg Scored some blue rear shocks! I couldn't believe my eyes when they popped up on ebay! Still looking for fronts though! http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4333.jpg MIP drive shafts! :intello: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4334.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4335.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4337.jpg Collection of decals... |
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4339.jpg
completed wing..... http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4340.jpg Some stuff that showed up yesterday..... I never knew Traxxas made satin chrome buggy wheels! I brought the bullet shocks because I needed the white plastic. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4341.jpg I'll admit. I'm a sucker for vintage motors. I now have three NIB motors. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4342.jpg Went to build my shocks and found a broken c-clip in the bag....really? lol :sarcastic: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4343.jpg Mounted on the buggy... http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4344.jpg Mmmmmmmmmm |

I'm actually watching that auction. |
I just got a box filled with a complete running TRX1. :intello: It is full of cool stuff. Most importantly, it came with a body. Pics will be up asap. :D
I am still looking for a NIB body though. :) |
OK, time for pics of the mother load that I received the other day.....
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4437.jpg Got this all for pretty decent price. I plan to re-sell nearly all of it. The main reason I got it was for the body, but several other things were included that I wanted to keep. I will only be keeping: Body Carrying Case Instructions Batteries (throwing all out but one or two) The Traxxas spoke wheels And a few other little tid-bits (the baggies are full of cool stuff, even a few pieces of technacraft!) Expect to see the rest for sale in the near future. :) http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4438.jpg A pic of a charger. What are those things by Tekin? They seem a little peculiar to be chargers. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4441.jpg Novak ESC and Airtronics servo http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4442.jpg A nice Airtronics remote. Needs a little TLC. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4443.jpg LOTS of little parts... http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4444.jpg Some very interesting battery plugs. I have about 15-20 of these. I have never seen them before...does anybody know what they are and who made them? http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4445.jpg |
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4446.jpg
A little rough on the outside but its perfect on the inside. :) http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4447.jpg Race notes from the previous owner. :) Made for a cool read. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4448.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4449.jpg There it is! Over all the body is in great shape. I'm going to overhaul it to make it nearly perfect. :) http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4450.jpg Pretty good shape. :) Even has a A&L bellcrank. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4451.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4452.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4439.jpg Assorted batteries. I'll be restoring the one on the far left. Will make a race pack out of it. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/IMG_4440.jpg Assorted motors. I'm going to clean the car up a bit and test it out. If something was not listed on my "keep list" and you want it, feel free to contact me. :) |
I don't know for sure but my guess would be the plugs are an earlier version of dean's.
Nice haul there and cool project. |

I am talking about the orange connectors. (there is a close up of one on pg. 2) Somebody on another forum said that they were made by Race Prep, but I could not find any pictures on Google?

A pic of a charger. What are those things by Tekin? They seem a little peculiar to be chargers.
Those are infact chargers. |
those are some pretty good chargers actually, dont be put off by the small size and old looks (thats what she said!) they work pretty well. The only bad thing about old DC peak chargers like that is they require a really good DC power supply, or a 12v car battery. If the voltage fed to the chargers fluctuates AT ALL they will false peak. So using cheap power supplies, or 2 chargers on one power supply is a bad idea.
Thats a good assortment of vintage motors! I used to have the second one from the left (LeMans 240ST) in an old kyosho buggy. The numbers on the LeMans motors stand for run time on a 1200mah battery, and the letters stand for the type of racing they were made for. So a 240ST would run for 240 seconds, the ST stands for, well, I cant remember, maybe "speed track"? Anyway, just thought I would share this little tidbit of random info that has nothing to do with your build  |
It's been a while since my last update. That is what happens when you find all the easy stuff!
In the mail coming (all NIB/NOS). Each part in the list below was quite a feat to find. Especially in new white plastic. White front bumper White front suspension arms White rear axle hubs White front axles/steering knuckles Silver front shock springs and........ I have my eye on some basically new front blue shocks! That is all I'm going to say until they are mine. :D STILL looking for: White plastic shock collars/piston/bushing kit for 2 shocks Rear blue motor plate (oh, will I ever find you.....) :sarcastic: |
Is that you that just had the body painted blue with flames on it? I saw one on RCC and wondered.
