Need help w/ Savage conversion.

Hi guys, been readin' like crazy, tryin to find out exactly what to go w/. I have a 90% aluminum Savage w/ Big Joes on it, that I want to electric. So far I've been reading the 7XL and 9920 w/ dual 7 packs would be nice. I want to plan for the future though, and get the fastest/strongest motor I can. I plan on adding Lipos down the road, so want to be able to handle extra power when I get there. For now want to use most cells I can carry. I need a reccomendation on where to buy the conversion kit, and will be will ing to buy motor and esc from here to support site, or anything else you can sell me to. Just wanna know the biggest, baddest, fastest set-up I can go w/. Lastly I was wondering if the Hacker 50 XL would be a good motor choice, as I might have a line on a slightly used one, or would consider new if I missed out on it. Thanks in advance for any and all recco's!!

First of all;

a warm welcome..!

If you are planning on driving 14 cells, but with plans for a stronger setup, i'd suggest getting lower KV rated XL motor, such as the 8 or 9XL, using the stock transmission with the automatic two speed is nice thing, unless you have got the heavy duty 2nd speed from HPI.

if you go to the savage forum, you can choose in the "from the" option on the bottom 'beginning' showing all the posts, in which you find more usefull information!

If you have got a question though, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the welcome and help!!!

Looks like I'm gonna order the 8XL motor and 9920 conteroller from Mike here. Just cant find anyone w/ a mount or battey holders. If anyone can direct me anywhere to hget at the least a motor mount I would be greatly appreciative!! Not concerned about the price of it, I'm not that handy w/ fabricating things, so am kinda desperate here. Thanks again!!!

To my understanding flm is supposed to have a motor mount in the works. I don't have a clue on when it is supposed to be out though.

I am in the process of making my own custom motor mount, when I'm done with that I will have an aluminum that I won't be using anymore. If you are interested.

Would the 7xl motor be ok on 16 cells? Because that is what I plan on running in my savage because I have been running a 10l and I am looking to get something more powerful.

MetalMan 05.14.2006 12:46 AM

Try a slower motor for 16 cells, like the 8XL or 9XL. You can still get the same power out, but can do it more efficiently.

Big Daddy 05.14.2006 12:51 AM

OK, I will have to look into it. I was thinking about the 7xl because I can get an almost brand new one for about half the price so I was curious as to how well it would work.

Thanks again

Thanks for the offer BigDaddy, but I found a guy who is gonna make one for me. I'm gonna try the 8 XL motor, 9920 controller, w/ 14 cells for starters(2 7 cell packs 3800mah). After that I'm gonna try to bump it up a bit w/ some Lipo's, but I wanna see how she does w/ what I have lying around 1st. I'm about 2 weeks out from getting her all ready, and will post backw/ some pics and results.:036:

Big Daddy 05.14.2006 01:25 AM

sweet man can't wait to hear about it,

Serum 05.14.2006 03:16 AM

The 7XL is fine for 16 cells, asuming you are using a 9920 controller.

With the 2speed transmission and the mechanical brake, you can't go wrong.

I am going to use a 7XL with the 2speed and mechanical brake on 18 cells on a savage.

TIMN 05.14.2006 03:59 AM

Serum, are you going to lock down the tranny to 2nd gear only, or leave it open 1-2 shift??

Serum 05.14.2006 09:56 AM

2 speed

Big Daddy 05.14.2006 10:13 AM

yup that's the setup I have on my truck. 9920, 2 speed, and the brakes (gotta be able to stop it)

highhat 05.14.2006 04:38 PM

2 speed?

Does it shift? I still can't get any one to explain how you can keep the tranny and manual brakes with the BL setup?/?:035: So I can understand....... I would love to keep my 3 speed funtional.. I just love hearing it shift twice:027: can some one please explain how to do this with manual brakes?

coolhandcountry 05.14.2006 06:45 PM

The brushless only takes place of the nitro motor. If the nitro has to go 30,000 rpm for it to shift. The brushless will shift at same spot with same spur and pinion. You need a y connector for the brake and esc though.

highhat 05.16.2006 06:39 PM

savage shift

so I just put a y harness on there and voila! what about when you hit the brakes and the motor hitsb reverse? how do I program my warrior 9920 for forward only operation?

coolhandcountry 05.16.2006 07:06 PM

When you program the end points. Pull the red jumper off hook batts up and wait for first beep. Then pull to foward and hold for beep and keep holding until final beep. You have it in forward only.

I need to get the savage x slipper my self. It don't seem to be holding very well on the small motor. I got a test drive in on mine so far. I need to do a little more to it though.

highhat 05.18.2006 05:03 PM

thanx

thanx coolhandcountry

I have got a few runs in on mine. The slipper is slipping so have to be easy on throttle. It seems pretty quick and even crawls pretty well. I am liking the auto shifting. I need to make a few adjustments to the shift points and it be ready for some action.

here are all of the instructions on how to program the controller for each configuration and how to reverse the motor if its spinning the wrong direction.

I think that being easy on the throttle may have been my problem...I am never easy on anything.
The y harness, and connecting the esc and the throttle servo to the receiver output to use the manual brakes worked nice.
someone posted a link to a site that makes a motor mount, and battery holders for the savage the other day. They have them listed as a complete kit, including esc, bl motor and all for one price. I think if you contacted them they would cell just the brackets. I will see if I can find that site, or the post, or the link.

I know which one you talking about. Here is a pic of mine. It handles nice. Need to get some battery straps and foam padding. I plan on going to a better motor mount and bigger motor to. Attachment 1166

Is that cardboard and ductape holding your electric setup together Leroy? i might call you ncabz one day.. :p

coolhandcountry 05.19.2006 03:38 PM

nope. The card board is under esc for wires out of the drive shaft. It acts as some insultion to. The duct for the batteries it nice but it don't want to let go. I said I had some things to get straight on it. :D I really wanted to test it out and see. I have some other stuff coming for it. Hope to see it run 70 before it is all over.
