HPI Trophy Truggy Flux?!
Does anybody have any experience with this truck?
http://www.hpiracing.com/kitinfo/107018/ I'm kind of interested in this truck but I've never seen any info on it it looks cool but my main concern is durability if anybody has had any experience with this truck please let me know if its worth buying. I know it was released before in other countries and its finally arriving in the u.s. |
No experience with this particular truck, but lots with HPI products. HPI in general makes very durable products, I would not be concerned with durability.
The electronics are a big question mark, they don't look like they are Castle products. HPI has great customer service if you would have any problems. |
Looks like the old LSP - One of the better truggies - RC8T or MBX6 would be perferable IMO
|
Like Arct1k said, basicly a Hot bodies Lightning stadium pro 2. It's what i call a 1st gen true truggy, One of the first to go long arm and long chassis (post ofna dominator/pirate chassis). Nice tough basher, not sure about racing against some of the 2nd and 3rd gen truggies
|
Arct1k, so your saying im better of getting a used roller then converting it? whats the most durable E-Truggy??
|
I'm really not looking to race just bash!
|
If HPI didn't change any hard parts, It'll be a tank
|
I think Arct1k's suggestion was based on a racing level truggy? I'm not sure.
As a pure basher HPI is top notch. |
My D8Te has been a very solid basher. It takes a lot of abuse for a heavier truck.
This truck looks nice, I'm sure it will be fine as a basher. Nick |
Of the HPI i have owned they have been tough trucks.
Looks like could be a good bashing set up for you. |
alright thanks guys
|
I am looking at getting one of these when towerhobbies gets them instock. I have always wanted a truggy. Had monster trucks and 1/8th buggies but not a truggy. I have wanted one ever since they first came out

Compare some pics. Look at the front shock tower, as well as the rear chassis brace design. http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/kits/107018/17.jpg http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/kits/107018/24.jpg http://gallery.me.com/thirdgen89gta/...13242594360003 Weak Points: C-Hubs. By gods, I hated the C-hub design. Constantly broke on a hard landing. The stock steering knuckles were weak as well, consantly stripped out the T-bolts. I fixed it by making the truck a hybrid. 7075 Aluminum C-hubs and steering knuckles for a Kyosho 7.5 fit from TopCad. Losi LST outdrive shafts paired to Sportwerks CVDs. Worked beautifully. http://gallery.me.com/thirdgen89gta/...13242595330003 |
That is interesting. Maybe can wait and take some parts of the new HPI truggy and rebuild my Lightning. I wait and see what happens.
|
Found a better picture of the rear Chassis Brace.

Was a blast. Huge Monster Truck sized jumps, 10,000+ people in the stands cheering you on as you break a whole bunch of stuff. Expensive weekends, but FUN weekends. Quad vs RC car races too. It was almost as much fun to tally up the damage totals as it was to break the stuff on live TV. |
The more I have been looking at this thing the more I want it. Glad to see such good reviews about the lightning statium truggy. Will order some aluminum hubs and find the CV shafts with the lst outdrive shafts. Cant wait. I was going to build an electric losi ten-t ut this is bigger and cheaper to boot. I have the 2s lipos already so why not :D

Actually, I just noticed they are out of stock. I'm guessing its more likely that they are out of Production instead. :( Full list of Top Cad stuff here: http://www.rcmart.com/advanced_searc...s_id=0&page=12 TopCad Aluminum C-Hubs TopCad CNC Knuckles |
wow thank you!
|
Honestly these are tanks but a Gen-0/1 Truggy.
I wouldnt be investing money in this but think you'd be much better off buying a RC8T or Losi 2.0T roller which could be had as cheap. |
I had the 8ight and loved racing it. I also ended up racing out my e-revo. HAd fun but the racers around me are not the friendliest people if they lose. I sold all my stuff b/c of it and focused all on my rc flying (planes and helis) Much nicer group of people. I have always wanted a truggy and just want one to run around the yard and do some simple bashing. I got my son a brushless e-maxx and want somthing I can run with him with but will still handle better than a monster truck. So cheap is fine with me as I do not plan on racing again. I would LOVE to have a 8ight-t but its so much more than the trophy truggy would be and again Im not going to be racing again(just playing with my son)

I can't stand how Savages and the bigger MT's handle and jump. Sure, they land big air well, as long as you land on your wheels and they are nowhere near as controllable in the air. The truggy soothes my Buggy addiction for speed/handling and still lets me fool around on rougher surfaces. Still want to build a brushless buggy though. |
I made my 8ight brushless with a MMM and the 2650. I also had a sportworks termoil that I put a castle HV120 hydro in and a fagio 8xl on 5s.
|
I got the front and back bulks, diffs, Knuckles, arms, and such.
I cut my chassis up to make a different chassis and got out of the hobby a bit. If get a new chassis with most of the braces and such for the HPI seems I can just bolt up. |

The fact that this truck uses so much LSP hardware is good. It means that those with LSP's will be able to get their parts! |
Got my trophy truggy today. Its pretty nice. Alot of slop in a few areas (gives me something to work on I guess) Wish it had CV shafts instead of dog bones but hey its cheap and the front has them (its just the middle and rear that has the dog bones) So would the CV hsafts from the Lightning Statium Truck pro work on this Those are 17mm hex style and this is the same truck right? I will see if I can find a link to the CV shafts.
Throttle is smooth (just drove it around the house real quickfor a few seconds) will test it out tomorrow and see whats she has :D Hoping to out run my sons e-maxx with the novak 6.5 system in it. Guess we will see. Need to put fluid in the diffs, the center unloads WAY to easy |

OK got my trophy truggy. I like it. It's defiantly not of the quality of the the losi eight I had but its 1/2 the cost too :D
Got the wife to take a few pics for me. I hit a tree today and broke my shock shaft and found that NO ONE in the us seems to carry parts. I idi find that amainhobbies has parts for the lightning so I ordered a few parts from them. Also ordered some ball bearings for the steering as there is some slop in that from the bushings in it and got some double rubber sealed bearings for the diffs and wheels as the stock bearings are only metal shielded. Now its a wiatig game for the parts to come in. Just hope that HPI gets some parts over here in the states for this thing some time soon |
Forgot to add that the esc is very smooth, much smoother than the MMM I had in the lst2 and the one in the e-revo. Handles well, needs thicker shock oil and really needs some diff fluid. Over all Im happy with the the truck so far, just not used to having an rc truck with dog bones and super cheap bushings and bearings. Though these are thing I am going to change when money is in more quantity in the bank(well just ordered the bearing replacments)
The chassis is rigid and feels very solid. Dont see any reason to upgrade it since Im only bashing it!!! |
Any update on this truck? My buddy is looking for a new truck and we were looking at this. Seems like a pretty good deal for the money.
Who is the ESC and motor made by? Thanks, Nick |
Its a hobbywing esc and motor.
I have been having a blast with this truck. Picked up some race tires and been running on a track to get practive. I have a 130ftx70ft open area and going to make another track. Cant wait. Got one pile of clay already and getting 2 more next week. Hopefully will have the black flex pipe in a month. My brother has one of the trophy trucks on order and is also going to get a set of race tires to race against me and another friend of ours. (we had to do our own track as the local ones dont race truggies) |
Wow i haven't been on here for awhile! I'm still considering getting this truck since i just got a new job, first i have to take care of some bills... @E-fanatic I'm a hardcore basher, do u think this truck can hold up to the abuse I might also start fooling around at the local track do you think this truck is worth money??
|
I am mostly a basher too. This truck with a few cheap upgrades has been SOLID. I installed the hardened steel diff gears ($10 per diff) and installed the 3.5mm shock shafts in the rear. Other than that this thing has taken a beating and come out unscathed.
Now I have done other upgrades too but none that are structural. |
Alright great to hear, ill definitely pick one of these up when they get back in stock! Do u think the esc can handle 6s??
|
no its a 4s max esc.
|
I guess ill have to put a MMM in it once I get bored of 4s...
|
Valuehobbies has the 150 amp 6s hobbywing esc for $80 right now.
|
Do u have a link??
