Yup, Another muggy conversion.

Well, it all started with an impulse buy at the 2010 hobby show here in Toronto, where I though a TB02 would be the perfect for me, and ended with me trading it off in fall for a muggy! I had gotten lucky with the trade and having a Losi 8te I had to own its monster brethren.

From the photos he send me, I wasnt entirely sure what to expect until he showed up locally..
and it was worth the wait

What i got
TIRES:
integy rims with unkown tires
pretty mucgh brand new dirt bones on dish rims
traxxas revo rims
and some others i forgot

BODIES
4 bodies
t max, revo lst and some other one..
Engines
brand new axial .28rr
used lrp .28
MUGGY!!!
high torque steering servo, think he said specktrum..!?

So all in all a very nice trade, or so i think. I ended up having to do a complete tear down/ rebuild as this guy was a mess!

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t.../DSC_00022.jpg

going to get er all cleaned up..

THE TEAR DOWN was horendous, nothing like cleaning up someone else's mess, especially in nitro form..

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0008-1.jpg

ugh grease and dirt oh my!

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/DSC_0007.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...SC_00132-1.jpg

BUT after quite a bit of scrubbing and de greasing she turned out to be realy purdy!
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t.../DSC_00142.jpg

Progress. So after cleaning it all up and re assembling with prope hardware and non broken parts i made the decision to ditch the nitro and go elektric:surprised:

So introducing home-made battery tray, or the start of it at least.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0014-2.jpg

And some more tinkering with the layout..
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0015-3.jpg

Got the battery all cleaned up and mounted as well..
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0016-3.jpg

She really does look good in person, I swear!
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/DSC_0019.jpg

d3lap 12.29.2011 02:36 AM

And as it sits today, with a custom esc tray too..

Good choice. The 7075 black anodized Muggy mount is really nice. It looks like your build is coming along nicely.

One suggestion: The Muggy chassis is known to be bendable - make sure yours is flat to begin with and you may want to use some additional bracing to keep it from bending in the future. Here's what I've used:

http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/y..._0693Small.jpg

Just an Aluminum angle piece connected to the front and rear bulkhead top-plates. It makes the truck much more solid.

d3lap 12.29.2011 07:22 PM

Well todays progress. Got the basement cleaned up and made room for my kits, and snowboard to sit on the shelf. I think it turned out pretty good..

The mount
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0003-1.jpg

And all finished up.

coolhandcountry 12.29.2011 07:26 PM

Interesting!
Could you make a flat plate instead of the angle?
How do they handle?

d3lap 12.29.2011 08:04 PM

Well the angle ands the rigidity.. I would assume a very strong piece of metak could do the support, but the angle really helps eliminate flex..

Took it for its first real voyage today. Faired well, until i hit my rock garden and snapped the front right a arm. Did not expect much though as it is -4c outside today so some breakage is normal. Also broke all 4 body posts and both shock towers (were the posts go in) some epoxy and screws fixed that up real nice. Although shock towers are on order. The 2100kv motor pushed this guy around like nothing!

devious1 01.06.2012 01:22 PM

looks nice,
Any vids of it running with the 2100kv?

d3lap 01.07.2012 05:46 PM

Nothing yet as its still mid winter here in Toronto so running conditions are not ideal... With sub 0 temps the silicon shocks really slow down so dampering is virtually non existant. But i will try to get some speed readings of this guy, its fast!

Of the past few runs ive had, i managed to break an a arm and both shock towers - were the body posts go. So ive got some new towers coming in. Not blaming quality on this as 20F (-4c) plastic is uber weak.

On a side note, I have some badland MT tires, which the foams broke on them, and im looking for replacements. Could anyone recommend some? These will alsobe mounting on the inner bead of my Rulux half ups.

devious1 01.07.2012 10:36 PM

Yeah living in mid Wisconsin i understand the cold weather.

At a moderate pace parts usually don't fair well when things jump out in front of you or the truck decides to try out gymnastics mid run...

d3lap 01.07.2012 11:12 PM

Tell me about it. A rock garden junoed out infront of me and took my a arm also forgot to mention i tweaked the rcmotor mount, straightened it out so well se how she performs.

devious1 01.09.2012 12:02 AM

Damn rock gardens, good luck with the mount...

d3lap 01.09.2012 12:09 AM

Well it already been straightened out, and it was a really solid hit. I was doing speed runs and lost control. The car slid sideways up a driveway and into a tree... Haha. Nothing broke!

Unsullied_Spy 01.09.2012 01:55 AM

Stock arms are really weak, they will break if you give them a stern talking to. The RPM ones are a ton tougher (even I haven't broken one :p) but you need to replace the turnbuckles that come in them, the RPM ones are really weak. Lunsford makes some titanium ones for it that make those arms virtually unbreakable. You'll also need RPM's adapter kit to make them fit the Muggy or LST.

d3lap 01.09.2012 01:37 PM

I will definately go the rpm route when i snap the stock arms. Which lunsford turnbuckles do i need?

Unsullied_Spy 01.09.2012 03:51 PM

I don't remember exactly, but going through my purchase history it looks like it should be Lunsford part # LNS1538. I sheared off a stock RPM one on my first run, very cheap metal and RPM wouldn't do anything as far as the warranty.

d3lap 01.09.2012 07:30 PM

Thanks spy, will look into those when i go rpm.
So im a little flustered on what to order first for this guy,
Shock towers + new body + diff braces
or a onboard camera
or rpm arms all around and the lunsford titanium turnbuckles...

d3lap 01.09.2012 08:26 PM

Well i jumped the gun and bought a mini camera for onboard video. Not hoping for 1080p but if its 480 ill be happy. Paid 1usd + shipping (7 bucks) so well see wha the quality is like. Will report back when i get it/test it..

devious1 01.09.2012 11:43 PM

Looking forward to it...

What's wrong with the stock shock towers and diff setup?

Those little onboard cameras are really cool, especially if you set it up for FPV.

d3lap 01.10.2012 11:11 PM

Well in some -4*c running i flipped the truck and snapped all 4 body post mounts and the mounting sockets for them, on the towers. Hence F&R towers.. The diff bulks were my fault hit a rock which snapped the arm and apparently broke the bulk heads.

d3lap 01.21.2012 10:06 PM

Got a little work done on the truck today.. Got new diff braces and my foams for my torn badland ones.. So a rather simple idea of tearing down the front end to replace the L&R braces turned into a chrome plated, carbon fiber lay down servo mount.. not sure if you can tell, but the diff braces, diff plate, and bell crank brace are all chrome plated.. Done with krylon chrome paint, dries fast!

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0016-4.jpg

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0018-3.jpg

All cleaned up and ready to go. I opted to use some epoxy steal and glued my old braces together, instead of using the new ones i just bought. I packed tons of epoxy into the plastic so it should stiffen things up some. If not, i have NIP part.

Any ways, todays work. Let me know what you think.

d3lap 01.22.2012 09:04 PM

No one?

devious1 01.22.2012 10:30 PM

I really like the lay down servo setup.
It looks good from what i can tell.
can you take a few more pics of the krylon?
you'll have to let me know how it holds up...

Don't feel bad it seems pretty slow around here...

d3lap 01.22.2012 10:40 PM

Thanks man, Ill grab a few more, although it is hard to notice.. Ill try with some better lighting.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0017-3.jpg

Had to bore out some wheel hexs to the 8mm stubs that the muggy had, Came out alright my rulux 17mm half ups with badlands on inner bead mounted up to them.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...DSC_0018-4.jpg

Overdriven 01.22.2012 10:43 PM

Sweet conversion, well done. I don't know what epoxy you used on your bulks, but I've never had any repairs hold up for more than about a minute. Losi parts are a pain when its cold. I broke a few parts on my Mini8 and I wasn't being hard on it either. Since its down I'm going to boil some of the parts to increase flex, hopefully it'll hold up better with this cold.

I've been curious on this,
as i have a set of 23mm and 17's from E-revo.

I have 17's on mine now but i would like to run either talon's or my response pro's as i have nothing for them to go to...

d3lap 01.22.2012 11:23 PM

Yea, there plastics seem to hate cold weather... More so then most. Im using some hobbyking 2 part epoxy, works really good actually and is sooo cheap. Will warn you, it really stinks and the odor isnt enjoyable. Im hoping the 17mm hold up, there wasn't a terrible amount of meat left when the milling was done... Oh well we shall see.

d3lap 01.23.2012 05:38 PM

Some more work today..

The build is about complete. Let me know what you think?

devious1 01.23.2012 08:48 PM

Looks nice,
is that your original chassis painted?
or did you scoop up on an HD chassis?

d3lap 01.23.2012 09:02 PM

Sadly, still the original. Im hoping with the metal battery tray and servo mount it will stiffen the truck up some.. Not really looking to spend the cash on a hd chassis..

devious1 01.23.2012 09:31 PM

from the looks of it i would think it would, or at least help a bit.
I'm not to familiar with these chassis's so i cant say for sure,
but then again depends on how and where you drive it...

d3lap 01.23.2012 09:38 PM

Yea, well the most air it gets (or will) is from my made ramps, so it should take a beating hopefully. If not then I will buy a new chassis, or maybe make one?

devious1 01.23.2012 10:37 PM

I would love to see someone make one in 4-5mm-ish carbon fiber.

Considering i am going to need a new chassis eventually anyhow.
I would throw money towards one...

d3lap 01.23.2012 10:54 PM

I would just re create the stock one in CF Its generally pretty flat so it would work alright. I think it would be awesome!, expensive tho. And skid plates would have to be made, no chance im leaving carbon fibre bare.

devious1 01.23.2012 11:00 PM

carbon fiber chassis, titanium skids.:gasp:
makes me wish i knew how to fiberglass or form carbon fiber...

That could make one hell of a chassis...

d3lap 01.23.2012 11:42 PM

yea i know! trouble it its supper expensive, and i dont have the means or skill to make a carbon fibre chassis. Not sure i could trust myself either haha thats quiet a bit of money to spend on a sheet of fabric.

devious1 01.24.2012 12:34 AM

I wonder if there is any where i can send a chassis to to have one made,
Time to Yahoo.

d3lap 01.24.2012 11:46 AM

Im sure you could, but the price would be in the hundreds..
carbon fibrre 5mm thick with the dimensions needed for the truck would be ell over 100-150$
machining of the chassis would cost quite a bit as well.

bdebde 01.24.2012 01:40 PM

The Innovative-RC chassis is 4mm aluminum, very stout.
